We have a brand new slate of home media releases to look forward to as we head into a new month, and there are some great films coming out on Tuesday that genre fans will definitely want to pick up. Kino Lorber is showing some love to Dark Intruder with their new 2K Blu, and Code Red is giving us more reasons to fear the water with their Blu-ray for The Great Alligator.
Other releases for February 2nd include Satan’s Blood, Sky Sharks, Deadcon, and Hellkat.

Slave of the Cannibal God
Blu ray
Code Red
1978/ 99 min.
Starring Ursula Andress, Stacy Keach
Cinematography by Giancarlo Ferrando
Directed by Sergio Martino
At the same moment the Korean War was ending and Eisenhower entered the White House, illustrator Samson Pollen found his niche; illuminating the fever dreams of suburban dads for action magazines from Man’s World to Stag. He enjoyed a long career and in 1978 he was handed an assignment right up his alley, a garish montage of anacondas, he-men and nearly-naked women. But his art for Slave of the Cannibal God turned out to be far from his best work. Blandly composed and indifferently executed, Pollen’s movie poster works best as a critique of the film itself.
Directed by Sergio Martino, this travelogue-cum-horror movie stars Ursula Andress, a paragon of beauty who built her brand on a supernatural physique and a come-hither gaze that might have inspired...

If Mario Bava can be credited as the Grandfather of the Giallo, with his early The Girl Who Knew Too Much (1963), and Dario Argento can be credited as the Father of the Giallo with his seminal The Bird with the Crystal Plumage (1970), then Sergio Martino should rightly be credited as, perhaps, the finest director of gialli. While Bava did some excellent work, including Blood and Black Lace and Twitch of the Death Nerve (Aka A Bay of Blood) and Argento also is renowned for his gialli like Profondo Rosso (Aka Deep Red), The Cat O’ Nine Tails, and Tenebrae, perhaps no director other than Martino was able to reel off a string of five—that’s right, five—expertly crafted gialli in a row. So, while Bava and Argento have become synonymous with gialli, and rightly so, fans of the genre include Martino’s name in...

Eli Roth, the horror director behind the Hostel series whose name has become shorthand for brutally wincing, gory cinema, is well aware that you may hate his new movie, The Green Inferno.
The director's latest stomach-churner centers on a group of liberal U.S. college students whose humanitarian trip to South America is derailed when their plane crashes in the Amazon rainforest. These twentysomethings are then rounded up by village natives and subsequently tortured, murdered and eaten in a series of boundary-pushing scenes that has divided critics and audiences based on one's gore tolerance.

One of the most fondly remembered eras in fright-film history is the golden age of Italian gore – a prolific period that brought such directors as Dario Argento, Lamberto Bava and Lucio Fulci to international attention and acclaim. Spawning all number of surreal sub-genres, including black-gloved killer-thrillers and stomach-churning cannibal adventures, this is a time that continues to crib a fresh generation of fascinated fans.
As such, 88 Italian have announced the UK Blu-ray release Zombi Holocaust (1980) and Burial Ground aka Nights of Terror (1981) – a pair of plasma-packed pot-boilers that could only have been dreamt up during the bygone boom in Euro-terror eccentricity.
In Burial Ground, the carcass-crunching action comes thick and fast as veteran director Andrea Bianchi (Strip Nude For Your Killer) evokes the sinister spirit of Lucio Fulci and George Romero. Also known as The Zombie Dead, Bianchi’s bout of bloodstained brilliance has a pack of ghoulish predators entrap...

There's no denying that The Green Inferno director Eli Roth is a horror geek among horror geeks. He'd be the first to explain the different versions of Dawn of the Dead. He was the kid who bought Bloodsucking Freaks and Faces of Death when the other kids bought Halloween and Friday the 13th. And he's the one who knows the difference between Mountain of the Cannibal God (Sergio Martino, 1978), Cannibal Holocaust (Ruggero Deodato, 1980), and Cannibal Ferox (Umberto Lenzi, 1981).
So it should come as no surprise to anyone who knows their horror cinema that the director of Hostel has decided to pay homage to a very specific sub-genre: the "clueless idiots wander into the deep jungle" cannibal misadventure. Those who remember those sleazy non-classics with some degree of affection will certainly appreciate what Mr. Roth has cooked up in the foreboding jungles of Peru – although it's difficult to say if the shocking,...

Blue Underground will give the 1973 psycho-sexual thriller movie Torso by controversial Italian cult film director Sergio Martino (Mountain of the Cannibal God) its Blu-ray debut on July 26.
Suzy Kendall and company are stalked by a killer in Torso.
Containing both an uncensored English version and a full-length Italian Director’s Cut, the Blu-ray will carry the list price of $29.98. Blue Underground’s updated DVD version will also be available for a list price of $19.98.
Starring Suzy Kendall (To Sir, With Love), Tina Aumont (Salon Kitty) and John Richardson (One Million Years B.C.), Torso concerns a series of sex murders that shock a college campus, prompting four beautiful young girlfriends to head for the safety of an isolated country villa. This would not be the late night classic from Lewis Teague, but the spaghetti creature feature Alligator, also known as The Great Alligator, from director Sergio Martino. The Italian auteur is best known for the movies Torso, 2019: After the Fall of New York, and The Mountain of the Cannibal God.
Alligator hits DVD on January 25, 2011.
In the tradition of the classic ‘animal revenge’ movies Jaws and Piranha comes Sergio Martino’s Alligator, a blood-soaked tale of greed. Third World exploration and karmic comeuppance starring Barbara Bach and Claudio Cassinelli. Vampire bats and cobras aren’t the only sentient creatures disturbed by blasting in the steaming jungle of Southeast Asia. When construction for an exclusive Club Med-style resort encroaches onto territory that the Kuma natives hold sacred, their alligator god Kroona takes it personally.

During this month of ghosts, werewolves, vampires, and zombies, it is important to remember that there are other sub-genres of horror films that still make essential viewing. Unbeknownst to a lot of horror fans, there was once a style of film made mostly in Italy during the Seventies and Eighties known as The Third World Cannibal Film, or simply The Cannibal Film genre.
These films gained a certain notoriety for their savage imagery (most notably the onscreen killing of animals) and brutal conventions (predominantly white people being set upon by primitive tribes and being summarily eaten). Due to this, a lot of otherwise intrepid horror audiences shied away from this sub-genre, thinking the filmmakers “out of their minds.” When certain governments caught wind of what was going on, these films soon found their way onto banned lists. Despite the efforts of “morality watchdogs,” the movies are just as much a...

The Red Door PosterDirector/writer: Jason Bognacki.
Jason Bognacki's short film "Loma Lynda: The Red Door" was sent to this reviewer simply as the "The Red Door." This short had an appearance in Cannes 2008, as part of the short film selection and "The Red Door" has gone onto win awards at Shockfest 2009 for Best Actor - David Fine, Best Film of the Festival, and others. Seriously surreal, this short starts off as serious hit of LSD to the system, warms to the audience with a psychotic monologue and finishes with a French dialogue about dissociation. Bognacki describes his film as a mix of Giallo and David Lynch; after seeing this film these words cannot be counter-argued, but the quality of the film can be enjoyed, as most of the senses are tickled.
From the cover sent with the film, this is "a modern Giallo genre film; a blood-drenched psychological...

You haven't seen Iranian Kidney Bargain Sale? Then you haven't dipped a toe into the motliest crew on record
The other day I finally got a chance to see Iranian Kidney Bargain Sale, a documentary I'd been meaning to get to for some time. Chronicling the adventures of assorted young Iranians who sell their kidneys to buy a taxi, or finance their education, or pay off debts, Iranian Kidney Bargain Sale is not the kind of movie that is readily available at most local video stores. But it is available – free – in the movie section at YouTube. So is a lot of other stuff.
Mostly when I visit YouTube it is to watch cats falling off chairs, parodies of Heath Ledger's turn as the Joker or sportscasters being tormented by stalking sock puppets. But it was recently pointed out to me that YouTube also has a section that is...
