Not every horror movie is going to connect with critics, no matter how much the public loves it or if its wider reputation grows more favorably over time. These range from cult classics that earned legions of devoted fans to maligned sequels and reboots that didn't deserve the critical hate they got upon release. Simply put, even the most poorly reviewed horror flicks deserve a reappraisal and are, at the very least worth a look from the curious and unfamiliar.
There are plenty of horror movies that hold a rotten critics' approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes that still make for interesting, and in many cases, even great viewings. With everything from supernatural giallo movies to slasher sequels that subvert expectations, there is a horror movie for every scary sensibility. Here are the 15 horror flicks that didn't connect with most critics that should be given at least one solid viewing.

“The Godfather of Gore” Lucio Fulci worked across all genres, but it’s his horror output that’s most remembered thanks to his knack for visceral violence, gore, and unconventional storytelling. All of these are on prominent display in his Lovecraftian “Gates of Hell” trilogy that began with 1980’s City of the Living Dead. While its atmosphere and gross-out gore gags are the standout reasons to watch, City of the Living Dead also happens to make for a stellar Halloween hidden gem.
The premise is simple: a priest commits suicide in a Dunwich village cemetery and unwittingly opens the gate to Hell. The death is observed in visions by a medium, Mary Woodhouse (Catriona MacColl), as she’s conducting a séance in her New York apartment. Mary’s so overwhelmed by fear of the imminent evil encroaching that she collapses and is presumed dead, only to be rescued from her...

When Evil Lurks Review: A Cruel, Bloody Possession Movie For Sickos, By Sickos [Fantastic Fest 2023]
Possession movies, much like zombie movies, are a dime a dozen. They follow most of the same tropes and aesthetics established in part by William Friedkin's "The Exorcist." This is to say, there are not many movies that can make the sub-genre feel fresh.
"When Evil Lurks" is one such movie. Demián Rugna's follow-up to "Terrified" is a bigger, more ambitious movie, and one that is quite cruel and gory. Most impressively, the film has quite a robust worldbuilding that becomes more complex and terrifying as the film reveals more. There's not much in terms of exposition, but you know just enough about what is going on beyond our protagonist to be interested in learning about this messed-up, bleak, Fulci-esque nightmare world where no adult, child, or dog is safe.

Terrified director Demian Rugna‘s new horror film When Evil Lurks drew comparisons to John Carpenter’s Apocalypse Trilogy and Lucio Fulci’s City of the Living Dead when it was screened at the Toronto International Film Festival – which are some excellent movies to be compared to. A wider audience will get the chance to see When Evil Lurks when IFC Films gives it a theatrical release on October 6th, putting it in direct competition with the Universal Pictures release of The Exorcist: Believer. Three weeks later, on October 27th, the film will also be available to watch on the Shudder streaming service.
According to Variety, When Evil Lurks deals with “timeless horror concepts” while “adding contemporary twists”. Scripted by Rugna, the story plays out in a remote village where two brothers find a demon-infected man just about to give birth to evil itself. In a time when exorcism looks...

How do Lucio Fulci fans catalogue their favorites? By number of atrocious set pieces? Or by simply weighing the entrails and moving from there? Fulci’s career is by no means limited to his gruesome peak in the late ’70s and early ’80s, but it’s sure difficult to find many who hold his ’60s spy knockoffs and westerns in as high regard as violent stoners do the likes of Zombie, The New York Ripper, and City of the Living Dead (also known as The Gates of Hell). While there’s no denying the effectiveness of the cheapjack surrealism underpinning The Beyond, most of his other gore touchstones are notable only for the extreme lengths they’re willing to go, not how far they’re capable of burrowing beyond viewers’ gag reflexes.

Since launching in 2020, Cauldron Films has quickly established itself as a boutique label to watch for cult film fans. In addition to unearthing and restoring obscurities like The Crimes of the Black Cat, American Rickshaw, and Frankenstein ’80, they’ve secured a few heavy hitters. Their most recognizable title to date is Lucio Fulci’s City of the Living Dead (originally released in the US as The Gates of Hell). Following an exclusive slipcase edition last year, a standard retail version of the 4K Ultra HD + Blu-ray set is available this week.
The 1980 Italian horror film is significant for kicking off Fulci’s thematically connected Gates of Hell trilogy, followed by The Beyond and The House by the Cemetery the next year. Developed in the wake of Fulci’s success with Zombie in 1979, City of the Living Dead features more undead ghouls but this time as accoutrements rather than a centerpiece.

Italian maestro Fabio Frizzi has composed more than 100 scores over the course of his 50+ year career, including features, shorts, and television, but he’s most well known for his work with Italian horror legend Lucio Fulci. Intermittently since 2013, Frizzi has paid tribute to his late friend and frequent collaborator with a live band dubbed Frizzi 2 Fulci.
“Fulci started to give me this heritage, and I try to use it in the best way,” he told me at the Coolidge Corner Theatre in Brookline, Ma on September 17, where he was being honored with the Coolidge After Midnite Award in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the genre. Without a doubt, Robert Eggers’ “The Northman” traffics in his now-usual brand of haunted atmospherics and wonky mysticism, a signature whose intensity is upped by the savage bloodlust of its characters and the vastitudes of his first big-budget epic with a price tag reportedly hovering between 70 million and 90 million.
The only thing more intensely stressed than the dilemma of a Viking prince in the year 895 played to brutal, muscular perfection by Alexander Skarsgård, is the all-consuming dedication of its tactile production design, its brooding, cinematographic ambiance and the craftsmanship of its furry, hierarchical costuming.
For the craggy look and authentic feel of “The Northman,” credit Eggers’ forever production designer Craig Lathrop, cinematographer Jarin Blaschke and costume designer Linda Muir, the team that worked closely with the director on his 2015 feature debut, “The Witch,” and also 2019’s “The Lighthouse.”

One of the country’s first prolific genre directors, Lee Yong-min initially started his career in the 1940s and 50s directing traditional dramas and comedies before turning to horror in the 1960s. Churning out titles like “A Flower of Evil”, “The Gates of Hell”, and “Bride from the Grave” before this title, he soon became one of the first names in the country’s genre scene at the time, spearheading a lot of the work done in the rest of the 60s and 70s with quite a few films to follow in his footsteps despite a vast majority of his own work not getting the credit it deserves. As one of his most widely-available titles, this classic ghost story still stands up to the day.

Happy Friday, dear readers! One of our annual traditions here at Daily Dead is that, once a year, we take a few weeks to celebrate a notable time period in the horror genre. And since 2021 marks the 40th anniversary of all the great classics that were released during 1981, we thought it only made sense to pay tribute to the films of that year with our Class of 1981 series.
Starting on Monday, August 16th, we will be kicking off our two-week celebration of the killer horror and memorable sci-fi movies that were released throughout 1981. And if you feel like celebrating right alongside us, I’ve gone ahead and put together this handy list of where you can stream an assortment of ‘81 classics on a variety of platforms (both subscription-based and free).
And remember, be sure to check back here every day on Daily Dead for all kinds of 1981-related fun, as...

Italian horror auteur Lucio Fulci is one of the most prominent voices to shape horror, both in his native country and on an international scale. I can’t always write about lesser known films. I mean I can, but I think it’s important to look at films known but not necessarily loved within their specific sub-genre. Case in point: Lucio Fulci’s The House by the Cemetery (1981), the last film in his loose “Gates of Hell” trilogy, and usually considered the least of the three. It certainly was by me - until my latest viewing, that is; while not epic in scope like The Beyond (‘80) or as atmospheric as City of the Living Dead, it has a straightforwardness that I find refreshing. As straightforward as Fulci can get, I suppose, in all his Fulci-ness.
For those unaware of the late director and the level of his import, we will need to consult with Cushing’s Ghoulish Glossary, which states:

It is truly amazing how crowded the zombie market was in the early ‘80s, at least in Europe; after the success of George Romero’s Dawn of the Dead (1978) begat Lucio Fulci’s unofficial “sequel” Zombie (’79), the floodgates were opened and the undead made their (slow and shuffling) move at the box office. Amidst the barrage was one Burial Ground (1981), a film that boils down a zombie flick to its very essence: people get munched, and they get munched good. Forget social subtext; Burial Ground barely has text.
Aka The Night of Terrors, Burial Ground was released on its home turf of Italy in the summer, with the U.S. not receiving a release until late ’85 before dropping on video in early ’86. There’s really no need to mention reviews from the mainstream: what do you think they would say that would in any way add to the discourse beyond...

It’s virtually impossible to separate the ‘80s horror output of renowned Italian director Lucio Fulci from the amazing, distinctive music of Fabio Frizzi. Fabio Frizzi Announces the “Beyond Composers Cut Tour” Frizzi 2 Fulci: (Press Release) Fabio Frizzi is returning to North America to perfom the legendary score for “The Beyond.” “The Beyond” is a psychedelic, supernatural nightmare directed by the granddaddy of Italian splatter Lucio Fulci. The second film in Fulci’s "Gates of Hell" trilogy sandwiched between City of the Living Dead (1980) and The House by the Cemetery (1981), “The Beyond’s” loose narrative revolves around a Louisiana hotel which may in fact be one of the seven gates to hell. The movie is beloved by horror fans for its surrealistic imagery and gore-tastic set pieces, including gouged out eyes, face-eating spiders, reanimated corpses, and a bloodthirsty dog. Additionally, a composer’s cut of the score is being re-release in conjunction with the tour via Cadabra Records.

It’s been a while since I’ve taken a Fulci out for a spin; frankly the latter part of his career has generally been met with the indifference (and occasional disdain) afforded his fellow countryman Dario Argento. Fair? Well, art is subjective, but even strict apologists have a hard time defending some late in the game efforts. Which brings us to Aenigma (1987), Fulci’s take on Argento, and a fine last gasp of electric madness.
Distributed by Filman International late December in France, Aenigma didn’t see release in Fulci’s homeland until August of ’88; by this point his films weren’t even making it stateside anymore, and it didn’t show up in North America until late October the following year for a limited run. When DVDs started making noise in the early ‘00s, Aenigma was finally brought to a wider audience who promptly gave it the awkward smile of a disappointed parent.

So Kristian A. Söderström, who are you, where do you come from and what’s your creative arts background?
I grew up in Gothenburg Sweden and was a film fanatic from the start. I got me an education in film directing from UCLA in Los Angeles, but I’ve studied film theory and psychology as well.
