In previous articles, we have taken a look at stars of the past we would like to see make a comeback – and there are a lot of them! It was too hard to narrow it down to just a few, so now we’ve put together another list of 80s stars we want back, including a couple of Freddy victims, some 1980s beauties we miss, and a lady we’ve only seen twice on our screens.

It’s a sad tale of a promising career being kneecapped by bad luck… actually, by a bad movie. Playing the character Swan in the 1979 classic The Warriors, Michael Beck proved he had what it took to be a badass leading man. It looked like his career would be soaring onward and upward from there. But his momentum came to a screeching halt the following year when he had the misfortune of...

The Criterion Collection is known for their dedication to championing classic and contemporary movies we should all be seeing, showcasing them with exquisite transfers and film school-level special features. But when it comes to their streaming service The Criterion Channel, the catalog is a bit looser. And it got weird and worse(?) this month, as they added a 14-title retrospective of the Golden Raspberry Awards. Titled “And the Razzie Goes To…”, Criterion’s grouping compiles 14 movies that come complete with bees, turkey time and whatever the hell Tom Green was doing for the duration of Freddy Got Fingered.
Here is the full list of Razzie flicks now available on The Criterion Channel: Cruising (1980), Heaven’s Gate (1980), Xanadu (1980), Querelle (1982), Under the Cherry Moon (1986), Ishtar (1987), Cocktail (1988), Showgirls (1995), Barb Wire (1996), The Blair Witch Project (1999), Freddy Got Fingered (2001), Swept Away (2002), Gigli (2003), and The Wicker Man (2006). There is, a critic will argue, a great deal of value in finding and discussing the worst films of the year. All the films released in a given epoch are a reflection of the trends and ideas that produced them, and scoring the bottom of the barrel for the worst filmmaking, the worst ideas, and the most misguided thinking will provide a valuable analysis of where we are as a society. Worst-of lists are important and vital and should be written with enthusiasm. They also let critics blow off steam a little bit; we don't have the luxury to skip bad movies or avoid talking about the ones we hate. It's our job.
The Golden Raspberries, or the Razzies for short, however, lost sight of that value a while back. The annual Razzies announcement is usually a snarky affair that only serves to pick on the year's least popular blockbusters,...

There's an endless debate between film fans on what it is exactly that makes a film "camp." For some, it's a shorthand to mean "so bad, it's good," while others (like myself) view it as a sacred form of presentation. Camp films are often exaggerated to the point of absurdity, tiptoeing the line of the uncanny, and with a sense of humor that is either unintentionally brilliant or delivered with tongue planted firmly in cheek. Of my 15 favorite movies of all time, more than half of the titles could be argued as camp classics. While there are plenty of universally understood camp films, the intentional lack of a formal metric means that a film's camp status will change from viewer to viewer, determined by vibes and a "you know it when you see it" attitude.

George Harrison made his way into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame despite not having much support from his Beatles bandmates or producer George Martin. The so-called quiet Beatle made it as a member of the Fab Four and a solo artist. George’s friend Jeff Lynne made it to the Rock Hall with his group Electric Light Orchestra, but he beat Harrison into another musical hall of fame.

George, of course, gained fame with The Beatles in the 1960s. Even though his songs didn’t appear on Fab Four records as frequently as Paul McCartney and John Lennon tunes, his were some of the band’s best. See, for example, “Taxman,” “While My Guitar Gently Weeps,” and “Something.”

When Jon Favreau made "Iron Man" in 2008, he, like many, assumed it might be the last time audiences ever saw the character on the big screen. As such, he included a few cute in-jokes that were never really meant to be extrapolated into future movies. One was the post-credits stinger when Iron Man was approached by Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) about joining a team called the Avengers Initiative. Favreau has admitted in interviews that it was meant to be nothing more than a wink to fans, and not a promise of things to come.
The other in-joke was the film's last line of dialogue. When asked if he knew anything about the mysterious armor-clad superhero that had been rocketing around the world disarming terrorists, Tony Stark winked and said out loud "I am Iron Man." In superhero comics, his secret identity would have been vital. With that single line of dialogue,...

Have you ever watched a movie and realized it was instantly going to be part of your personality? Last weekend at a midnight screening of Xanadu, I thought I was merely filling a critical hole in my gay camp movie repertoire. The Olivia Newton John 1980 roller skating musical was a bomb when it first opened. Yet, through hit songs like “Magic” and “Xanadu,” the film hung around long enough to become a cult classic. Obviously the term “roller skating musical” doesn’t inspire much confidence in a film’s storytelling prowess. Xanadu isn’t a “so bad it’s good” curio piece. Instead, it’s an ambitious, messy, misunderstood masterpiece about the ebbs and flow of art and taste...

If there's a basic, no-frills definition for movies, it's that they're made to be seen. Cinema is a populist medium, attempting to reach as wide an audience as possible for as long as possible.
Perhaps that's why the feeling of "discovering" a movie can be so powerfully enjoyable. It gives you the sense, however false, that you're stumbling upon a secret piece of entertainment made just for you. If you happen to discover such a movie in the wee hours of the morning, so much the better — the surreal setting only serves to make what you're watching seem that much more unreal, richer, and special.
It's that sensation that the programming block on Turner Classic Movies known as "TCM Underground" sought to capture every Friday night-turned-Saturday morning. Begun by Eric Weber in 2006 and continued by programmer Millie De Chirico starting in 2007, TCM Underground made it its business to curate some of the most obscure,...

How do you make a crowdpleasing parody musical of pop culture? There's no one answer. At their best (or bare minimum), a solid musical parody is a popcorn box of catchy songs, jokes, and wish fulfillment. Enjoy something as bloody and racy as "Game of Thrones"? "Game of Thrones: The Musical (The Unauthorized Parody)" features tap-dancing direwolves and wordplay ("I accept your Hand job"). Like or dislike the rom-com "Love Actually"? The musical spoof "Love Actually?" ridicules the movie's purported best and worst qualities.
This year, I highlight two parody musicals different in genres: one that reimagines a romantic epic blockbuster and the other that spoofs a mega-hit sci-fi streaming show. The best of their tactics underline the revelry of spoofing intellectual properties. For those who already enjoy the source material, these are for you.

It's been a little over a week since we learned that actress and four-time Grammy-winning singer-songwriter Olivia Newton-John had passed away at the age of 73. While known for her performances in films like "Xanadu" and "It's My Party," Newton-John became a cinematic icon for her turn as Sandy Olsson in 1978's "Grease." As a way to honor the movie musical legend, AMC Theatres is bringing "Grease" back to the big screen, with a portion of all ticket sales going to charity.
"Grease" will be available in 135 different AMC locations around the country with 5 tickets, and 1 from each ticket sale will be donated to breast cancer research foundations through AMC's charitable fund AMC Cares. Olivia Newton-John was very open about her battle with breast cancer, which was first diagnosed in 1992. In 2017, Newton-John announced that the cancer had returned for the third time, and had spread to her spine. AMC CEO Adam Aron...

I see lots of talk about Grease as we mourn the loss of Olivia-Newton John, but let’s not forget the real crowning achievement of her career…
Xanadu (1980)
Director: Robert Greenwald
Stars: Olivia Newton-John, Gene Kelly, Michael Beck
Is There A Plot?
A muse from the heavens comes to Earth to better our world by… [checks notes]… helping a struggling artist and an elderly rich man achieve their newfound dream of opening up a roller disco.
What’S The Damage?
Xanadu is a legendary bad movie for many reasons. Razzies creator John J. B. Wilson hated it so much that it led him to invent an official award show to celebrate the worst films of the year. It also has the designation of being screen legend Gene Kelly’s final film before his death, a rainbow-colored pimple on the ass of a renowned career. But, perhaps worst of all, Xanadu’s critical...

Like many of her fans, family and collaborators, John Travolta was affected by the recent news that Olivia Newton-John had passed away at 73. He expressed those feelings to his Instagram followers in an emotional post yesterday.
In Memoriam 2022: 100 Great Celebrities Who Died This Year!
“You made all of our lives so much better. Your impact was incredible,” Travolta began his message, which accompanied an old photo of the Grease and Xanadu star. “We will see you down the road and we will all be together again. Yours from the first moment I saw you and forever. Your Danny, your John!”
Travolta and Newton-John displayed great chemistry as Danny and Sandy in the hit 1978 musical Grease, and both were multi-talented actors, singers and dancers. Their duet from the film’s soundtrack album, “You’re The One That I Want,” even became one of the best-selling singles in history.

In 1990, years after Grease, “Physical,” and Xanadu, Olivia Newton-John made her TV movie debut as a department store mannequin brought to life — and no, this probably wasn’t the living-mannequin story you’re thinking of right now. Unpacking the masterpiece that is A Mom for Christmas might take some time, so you might want to sit down.
Live mannequins had appeared in TV and film long before 1990. Some were utterly confused and looking for a thimble (Anne Francis in a 1960 episode of The Twilight Zone), some were inhabited by ancient...

Farewell, Olivia Newton-John, the eternally beloved pop queen who died Monday at age 73. No Seventies star had a weirder pop trajectory, going from the world’s favorite Australian country singer to a brazen Eighties black-leather New Wave diva in just a few years. But Olivia could do it all: weepy ballads like “I Honestly Love You,” country twang like “Let Me Be There,” Fifties pastiche in Grease. Disco show tunes with Gene Kelly and Elo in Xanadu. Heavy-breathing rock odes to sex like “Magic” and “Make a Move On Me.

If you were raised in a house tuned to Am radio in the 1970s and early ‘80s, chances are that the crystalline vocals of Olivia Newton-John, who died Monday at age 73 at her Southern California ranch, were a big part of your childhood soundtrack.
This was especially true if you grew up in Australia, where we eagerly claimed her as our own, even if Onj was born in Britain and moved with her family to Melbourne when she was 5. I just have to think about her 1971 breakthrough hit, a wistful, soft-rock country love song by Bob Dylan called “If Not for You,” to start it playing in my head on a loop for days. “Let Me Be There,” from the same debut solo album has a similar lasting hold over me, as does “Banks of the Ohio,” a 19th-century down-home murder ballad rendered with sweet,...

Heaven is one angel stronger today. The iconic 1970s superstar Olivia Newton-John passed away earlier today at age 73 after her fourth bout with cancer. Our thoughts here at The Film Experience go out to her surviving loved ones, husband, siblings, and daughter. More pointedly they go out to her legion of fans since yours truly counts myself among them. If you're in that group, you're surely hurting, too. You see, dear reader, Olivia was my first love. Like everyone who came of age in the 80s, the trio of Grease and Xanadu and "Physical" were impossible to escape. Nor did young Nathaniel want to! I can't remember where I even first learned her name or heard her sing. She was just always part of the world...

It's difficult to look back on American cinema without remembering Olivia Newton-John - the iconic singer and actress who died at age 73 after a decades-long battle with breast cancer on Aug. 8
Most remember, of course, her turn as an innocent high schooler in movie-musical "Grease" in 1978. She portrayed the "plain Sandra Dee," which included performing a slate of now-iconic songs like "You're the One That I Want," alongside actor John Travolta (who was one of many actors to publicly pay tribute to Newton-John following her death). She also appeared in 1980's "Xanadu," the musical-fantasy film alongside Gene Kelly that earned her a number one hit with the track "Magic." But those were just a few of her roles.
In honor of Newton-John's legacy and the incredible impact she's left behind, we're taking a look at some of her best films and most memorable performances throughout the years.

When Olivia Newton-John died on Monday at the age of 73, the entertainment world lost an icon. The multi-talented British-Australian performer first rose to prominence as a pop star in the 1970s with the hit albums “If You Love Me, Let Me Know” and “Have You Never Been Mellow,” but movie lovers will always remember her as Sandy Olsson. Her starring role in “Grease” resulted in many of the most iconic musical numbers in film history, from “Summer Nights” to “You’re the One That I Want.” Newton-John’s musical pedigree and chemistry with Travolta went a long way toward propelling the film to success, and its soundtrack remains one of the best-selling albums in music history.
While “Grease” remained her most notable role, Newton-John continued to parlay her strong musical stage presence into a variety of other film parts. She notably starred in the Electric Light Orchestra musical “Xanadu,” which...

Olivia Newton-John was an Australian recording star who achieved serious Hollywood fame with her starring role in the 1978 musical Grease, playing opposite the white-hot leading man of the moment, John Travolta. No cause of death was given, but Newton-John had been diagnosed with breast cancer in 1992. She later recovered, but the cancer recurred in 2013 and had metastasized to her lower back within four years. She long had been an activist against the disease.

A UK native who was raised in Australia, Newton-John began her career as a country singer but quickly crossed over to pop with the late-1973 hit “Let Me Be There.” It was the first of 15 Top 10 U.S. singles, including five No. 1s: “I Honestly Love You,” “Have You Never Been Mellow,” “You’re the One That I Want”, “Magic” (from the 1980 film Xanadu) and her biggest smash, “Physical.” The latter topped the Billboard Hot 100 for 10 weeks and was the No. 1 single of 1981. It also spurred a physical-fitness craze, with its music video featuring Newton-John — in a period-defining outfit that included a leotard and headband — cavorting among hardbody models and chunky schlubs just trying to work off a few dozen extra pounds. Watch it below.
Newton-John won four Grammy Awards among a dozen nominations during her career: “Let Me Be There” took Best Country Performance, Female, in 1974; “I Honestly Love You” won Record of the Year and Best Pop Vocal Performance, Female, the following year; and “Heart Attack” took Video of the Year in 1983. She also has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

She is best known to movie fans as the “Sandra Dee”-esque Sandy in Grease, the 1978 smash that remains among the top-grossing movie musicals of all time. Starring opposite Travolta in the Broadway adaptation, Newton-John sang the film’s country-flecked ballad “Hopelessly Devoted to You” and also duetted with Travolta and the company on “Summer Nights.” Both of those singles also made the U.S. Top 10. The film’s soundtrack spent 12 nonconsecutive weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and has sold more than 8 million copies in the U.S. alone. It also spawned a No. 1 hit with Frankie Valli’s title track.

Grease was a sensation with it premiered in June 1978. With school scenes shot at Venice High and Marshall High in Los Angeles, it combined the era’s 1950s nostalgia with the burgeoning disco movement and made film stars of Newton-John and Travolta. They played star-crossed polar-opposite lovers who become the king and queen of Rydell High School, with Newton-John’s Sandy Dumbrowski getting an extreme makeover from the prim, ponytailed new girl at school into a leather-clad stunner near the end.
Grease was added to the Library of Congress’ National Film Registry in 2020.
The film also helped fuel Newton-John’s stellar music career. Along with “Physical” and “Magic,” she also had post-Grease Top 10 hits with the disco-flecked “A Little More Love,” “Make a Move on Me,” “Heart Attack,” “Twist of Fate” and the title track from follow-up film, “Xanadu.” She had five Top 10 hits on the Billboard Hot Country Singles chart as well.

Released by Universal in August 1980, Xanadu coat-tailed the late-’70s roller disco craze, with Newton-John starring as Kira, a mysterious woman who falls in love with a struggling freelance artist (Michael Beck) living in Los Angeles. Despite co-starring Gene Kelly, the film was not a commercial hit — the skating fad had ebbed by the time it came out — but its soundtrack reached No. 4 on the Billboard 200 and went on to go double platinum. It also features Electric Light Orchestra and the Tubes.

Many of Newton-John’s solo albums also were hot sellers in the 1970s and early ’80s, with If You Love Me, Let Me Know topping the Billboard 200 in October 1974 and follow-up Have You Never Been Mellow doing the same just five months later. Two others made the U.S. Top 10: Totally Hot (1978) and Physical (1981).
Born on September 26, 1948, in Cambridge, England, Newton-John moved with her family to Melbourne, Australia, when she was a child. She began in music with a teenage pop group before winning an Australian TV talent show. She made her first single, “Till You Say You’ll Be Mine” in 1966 and toured English clubs as part of the duo Pat & Olivia with Pat Carroll. She later returned Down Under to continue her music career.
Newton-John is survived by her husband, John Easterling; daughter Chloe Lattanzi; her sister, Sarah Newton-John; her brother, Toby Newton-John; and many nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that any donations be made in her memory at ONJfoundation.org.

One of our favorite fellows competing on “The Masked Singer” season 7 is disguised as the Prince. He wowed the crowd in his first appearance on April 20 with a rollicking rendition of “La Copa De La Vida” by Ricky Martin. It became clear quite quickly that this contender is a talented song and dance man. He returned on April 27 with another standout performance, this time with a cover of “Lay Me Down” by Sam Smith. And he earned his place in the May 18 final with a sensational version of “Sir Duke” by Stevie Wonder.
We didn’t get a lot of clues about the famous face hiding behind this mask but we think we saw and heard enough to know his real name. Keep reading for all “The Masked Singer” spoilers including the answer to the question, “Who is Prince”?
We think that the Prince is Cheyenne Jackson, the Broadway leading man turned TV actor.

Director JJ Abrams and his Bad Robot Productions, will kick off a new live-action TV series for HBO Max, based on Vertigo Comics "Madame X" (aka "Madame Xanadu"), a character identified with 'Nimue', a 'sorceress' from 'Arthurian' mythology made popular by Sir Thomas Malory's "Le Morte d'Arthur":
"..'Nimue Inwudu' is the youngest sister of 'Morgana' (aka 'Morgaine Le Fay') and 'Vivienne', the 'Lady of the Lake'. The sisters are descendants of the 'Elder Folk', survivors of 'Atlantis' who evolved into the race known as the 'Homo magi'.
"She cast an imprisoning spell on her former lover 'Merlin', blaming him for manipulating 'Camelot' and the course of history for his own gain. Merlin has the last laugh, though, as he succeeds in stripping her magic away from her, forcing her to use potions to maintain her immortality.
"Nimue wanders the world for some time, becoming an advisor to many great rulers.
