Naive or ridiculous?
kosmasp20 December 2020
You have to be in a certain state of mind ... because the low brow humor (I'm being kind I know) might be hard to swallow. Don't expect much in the acting department either ... again this is more ridiculous than anything else. But even with a movie like that you can have a lot of fun.

Have a heart for those not law abiding citizens ... they are also not politically correct in any way shape or form. Sexism and other isms are included here - for "fun" and comedic effect that is. But some may feel or view it as creepy. Some like it hot ... some others may feel it's not! If you get the reference you'll understand what I mean. The last few minutes are even more over the top therefor even madder than anything before - which may feel like it's a completely different movie you're watching ... if you watch it through that point in time, you won't mind ... convenient resolution included

thommy in a movie? yes, and he is not the worst...

with a distance of almost 20 years this film can really be fun. hilarious story, some talented actors, famous names and the feeling of the 80s this flick is in tradition of 70s nonsense films. without thomas gottschalk in the leading role no one could watch this film to the end, but otherwise it´s so bad that it´s getting good again. but don´t consider paying money for the rental, wait for tv.

Acting may not be their biggest strength

Warning: Spoilers
"Piratensender Power Play" is a German 82-minute movie from almost 35 years ago, or I should maybe say West German as, back then, there were still 2 German countries in existence. Writer and director is Sigi Rothemund and the two lead actors Thomas Gottschalk and Mike Krüger also helped out with the script. If you are from Germany, you have certainly come across these 2 names on some occasion. Gottschalk turned into the biggest show-master from Europe and Mike Krüger became a pretty successful comedian. Can I say "stayed"? I am not sure as both him and Gottschalk are really not particularly good in here. Then again, as an actor, you can only be as good as the script lets you and the screenplay here was not a strike of genius at all. Oh yeah, Evelyn Hamann is in here too, but she is basically too good of an actress for this film and her character here who has zero interesting shades really.

Tommy and Mike run an illegal radio station and the established stations become angry when they lose their listeners to the duo, so they try to find them and have them arrested. In order to avoid arrest, Tommy and Mike are constantly on the run from the police and switch costumes all the time. In the end, they dress up as two female teachers and nobody sees it is two men. In fact, the men have the hots for them and even if the two real teachers show up, people believe the real female teachers are the fake ones. Yeah, this wasn't a particularly funny film, but it is interesting to see how much music was in here. Music (even if he isn't a very talented musician himself) has always played a big role in Gottschalk's life/career. But the music is also not good enough to make this something more than a mediocre film. The two protagonists here have certainly more talent in other areas than acting and writing as it seems in this film. I see there are 2 or 3 more sequels, so this film must have been a success nonetheless and I definitely hope they stepped up their performances in these sequels. We shall see. As for this first film here: Not recommended.

Hilarious. Naive. Attractive. And above all - RELAXING!
exciter-220 July 2004
I loved it. REALLY. For some reason I can not even name a sincere relaxing and fun to watch comedy of recent years - that would come close. Two guys - who are not really losers at the first glance - indulge themselves in a bit of a weird hobby. Owning and operating an illegal FM radio station. And local listeners LOVE THEM. For a simple reason. Every "official" Bawarian radio-station in their area totally and utterly lame! Tragedy for monokini wearing German beach-girls haplessly trying to catch a glimpse of timid European sun from behind the clouds on the lake shore with a trusted boom-box. So they tune every time when "Tommy und Mike" are on the air. The problem is - investigators from the official broadcasting corporation together with cops are tuning in as well. And using modern technology in a form of triangulating equipment of WWII era used by Nazis to pinpoint location of British and Russian radio transmitters. And they are hell-bent on finding and taking down Tommy and Mike's fun, but illegal (though non-profit) enterprise. At the same very moment Mike's farmer owning big sister comes up with a plan to make money of her brother's passion for broadcasting and radio DJing. She sells some heirlooms. Buys Chevy Van stuffed with professional mobile broadcasting equipment... And hilarity begins.
