"The Sting" Polish Style
Galina_movie_fan12 December 2005
Warning: Spoilers
October 1934. Poland. Famous bank robber Kwinto (Jan Machulski, popular actor and father of director Juliusz Machulski) decided to quit his dangerous criminal job, but after his friend's death, he changed his mind and organized a burglary of the famous and well protected bank which belonged to his former partner in crime, backstabbing and double-crossing Kramer (Leonard Peetraszak). Kwinto designs a deliciously clever plan not to only rob the Kramer's bank but to make it look like Kramer himself did it. Juliusz Machulski's directing debut reminds the celebrated Oscar winner "The Sting" with its retro-style, elegant brilliance, and wonderful use of music - and I am not sure which movie I like better, American or Polish.

One of the best polish movies ever
yaff-16 September 2005
I must say that I'm little dissatisfied reading these "plot summaries" where authors say "Kwinto has only revenge in his mind". That is misconception quite common. In fact the film director shows it clearly enough to learn that Kwinto has no revenge in mind. It is likely he will accept the money from Kramer if only Kramer haven't killed his best friend. This murder is the only reason why he decide to take revenge on Kramer and we can see it clearly.

The film itself is a real masterpiece. One can feel as if it was really made in the thirties not fifty years later. Also the language used in the film would be found archaic today but it is how they were talking in the 30's. The plot is dynamic and interesting without any "blackholes of boredom" which are common in many polish films.

Polish „The Sting"
Maziun1 November 2013
This is a debut movie from Juliusz Machulski , Polish director who is in Poland often called "Polish Spielberg" . He specialize in making comedies and "Vabank" is one of his best movies. It's a movie about con artists set in Warsaw in the 30's , before World War II.

The movie was made in the 80's in Poland during the communism , so the budget wasn't too big and the art-direction might look a little cheap for modern audiences . It's the script that is the star of movie . Full of Polish brisk humor and many small twists it's a pleasure to watch . The final is really surprising . It's also interesting that main hero is played by Jan Machulski father of the director and that the opening credits appear after 7 minutes of the movie.

Add to that a good direction , professional acting (good Jan Machulski as the hero , great Leonard Pietraszak as the villain) , elegant and catchy music by Henryk Kuźniar and a lot of charm – "Vabank" is must see for all movie lovers .

I give it 8/10.

Absolutely Brilliant!
denis88820 July 2006
Warning: Spoilers
This film is not only one of the best ever made in Poland, this is the work that was and is extremely popular in my country, Russia. Elegant humor, brilliant script, impeccable play of all actors made this film a classic which it fairly remains to be now. It's hard to believe that it was filmed in 1982, in the middle of the political and social turmoil which besotted Poland that time, the country was on the brink of a civil war, but one will never even guess it while watching the movie. It's all thanks to the genius of Juliusz Machulski, the director, script writer and the brother of Jan Machulski who played the main hero, Kwinto. The film takes place in the 1930's, before the war and when Poland was still rich and booming. Kwinto is a famous bank robber, as well as a prominent jazz trumpeter (the soundtrack to the film is another winner; main theme is a sheer elegant Dixie tune). He comes back from the prison and learns that one of his friends is killed, that his wife had gone to another man, and that the greedy and mean bank director Gustav Kramer is in fact the very man who had helped Kwinto to go to jail and who had helped his friend to be killed. Thus, the revenge starts. Kwinto is helped by his old pal Dunczyk, extremely funny and smart crook, two slightly silly but workaholic bandits and a beautiful lady Natasza, played by then young and now very famous Elzbieta Zajacowna. The whole gang starts a devilishly clever plan and finally Kwinto achieves his main aim – money is returned to all victims of Kramer's black deeds, Kramer himself is in prison, and the happy gang is merrily celebrating the event. This is a pale and colorless description; you really have to see it to feel the brisk Polish humor, comic gags, and unbelievable twists of plot. Watch it; this is the brilliant classic of Soviet era Polish cinema – breezy, fresh and utterly smart

An excellent detective story, a must-see, the classic.
Romwell27 July 2005
This is one of the very excellent movies that you don't get to see often. A twisted plot, good humor, excellent play and the unique atmosphere of the 30's capture you. There is not really much to add to it, except that Va-Bank II might be even better ! If you are able to see this film - see it. I am running out of words to tell you how wonderful the movie is. I have already mentioned that the actors' play is terrific, but you really have to see it to appreciate it. Every little detail was prepared for you to bring you into the 30's. Everything is good, even the music that the main character plays on his trumpet is excellent (I still remember it :) ) I just wonder - Polish people don't comment on IMDb or what ? This film is highly appreciate all round the ex-USSR, so if you somehow missed it - don't lose your chance.

This one should be world famous!
Bernie-513 May 2007
Polish cinema is not famous for its "entertainment" movies. At least, outside Poland. It is "artistic" and "dramatic" movies by early Polanski, Wajda and Kieslowski that were noticed and awarded throughout the world. And yet, there were few comedies that could be world hits or, at least, the European ones. They were in Poland and in east-Eueropean countries, especially in the Soviet Union. These are famous three by Juliusz Machulski: "Vabank", "Vabank 2" and "Seksmisja". "Vabank" - Machulski's debut is a precise and funny little masterpiece. The plot is twisted in "The Sting" style and is executed witch charm and wit. Acting, dialogs, music is superb; it's one of those unique films when every little detail falls into a right place. If You have any chance to rent it or catch it on TV, don't miss it. You won't be disappointed and surely You'll be interested in the sequel which (quite rare thing) is equally good.

For me the best crime comedy ever!
mike-juda3 June 2013
In my opinion Vabank is definitely the best Polish crime comedy of all times.

Great casting, acting, dialogues and overall atmosphere. And the plot is so cool you are impressed every time you watch it.

I don't how the jokes sound translated into English, but in Polish they are top notch. And you will appreciate it even more after watching tons of expensive Hollywood unfunny crime comedies.

Also the attention to detail when it comes to cars, interiors, costumes is really impressive. This movie really has everything. If you got a chance definitely check it out!

Passable but not great.
deloudelouvain21 August 2020
With other reviewers stating this is "absolutely brilliant" and "best Polish movie ever" you wonder how great this movie will be. The truth is that it's passable, certainly for a 1981 movie, but it isn't the gem I was waiting for. I watched Vabank and Vabank II in a row so that I could compare them easilier. The first Vabank is okay to watch once and that's if you're not too picky. The acting was passable, nothing great either but it was okay. The "heist" was interesting to watch and made you want to watch the second Vabank (that turned out to be disappointing). The Polish language isn't a very pleasing language to listen to so that was also a negative point for me. As for the humor it's barely present, it's more about the heist than it's funny. In my humble opinion this movie is highly overrated, even for a Polish movie from that era.

Another cult cinema from Poland
AndreiPavlov27 September 2007
Warning: Spoilers
The movie is like a delicate puzzle. A jigsaw, the elements of which are being gradually attached one to another, bit by bit. The style of the director impresses me greatly: more than a decade ago I watched "Deja Vu" and that turned out to be an extremely enjoyable experience too. That director knows how to manipulate the viewer's feelings. At one moment you are all way down and frustrated (here I was in distress when I noticed that metal object left by the robbers – damn, I thought they "f***ed up") and at another you get big and absolutely unexpected surprises that come in hordes (the Negro, the Natasha, the big dog, the flat, the alibi, etc.).

I'm wondering if the second movie is of the same quality – soon I shall hopefully find it out. The actors' performances are very natural: nobody is fighting in "matrix" style and nobody is showing off by shooting the whole supply of ammo into baddies. The four crooks, who are the main characters of this picture, are quite nice. The crime they are committing is understandable and can be justified by the standards of down-to-earth human conscience. Though I think that I watched this film attentively, I still cannot get at least one machination shown (the one with the fingerprints). It means I will have to re-watch this comedy again and I've got nothing against it, while the movie is a real treat.

My vote is 10 out of 10 – let me proclaim that this is the best crime film I have seen so far. "Pulp Fiction" has no chance: it is like a teen music video if compared to this clever cinema. Thank you for attention.

Polish bank job
kurciasbezdalas24 October 2008
This movie is not well known but it's really worth watching. I don't know much about Polish cinema but this is probably one of the best Polish movies. It's very entertaining crime comedy. The budged of this film is pretty low but the plot, acting and directing compensate it. There isn't much jokes but the ending was really funny. It's also good as a crime movie. I liked the dialogs between criminals and also the way they planed bank robbery. If you get a chance to see this movie, don't waste it because it's really interesting (althau it may appear a little boring in the beginning). I also liked the style of these gangsters - the way they talked and worked reminded me of some Hollywood crime movies.
