- When twin brothers Sudhir and Adhir get orphaned by their father's death, Magistrate Chaturvedi adopts them and brings them up like his own. Though Adhir goes insane after his father's death, Sudhir picks up the opportunity, studies hard and becomes a doctor like Magistrate Chaturvedi's son Prashant. When Prashant gets caught performing an illegal operation, Sudhir takes up the blame to repay the debt of the Chaturvedi family on him and his brother. Watch to know if there's light at the end of the tunnel for the honest and sacrificing Sudhir.—Laila
- 'Bemisal' in English means "unrepeatable". The plot revolves around the enduring friendship of two boyhood friends, Sudhir and Prashant. Their friendship is so deep that deepens over the years when they grow up to become doctors. Falling in love with the same woman, each is prepared to yield to the success of the other, going so far as to plead for the other. Kavita marries the friend preferred by her father and elderly aunt and the plot thickens. The friends live in the house of the a district magistrate together with the new bride. While chaste and above-board, a remark by a catty woman during a social event begins to put a stress on the relationship. One of the friends decides to open a nursing home, where dubious and illegal practices happen in his quest for riches. The other continues to work in a government hospital, though he is legally a partner in the nursing home. When the long arm of the law catches up with the nursing-home doctor, the other friend performs some illegal activities and he takes the rap. It takes a while for all the parties to understand the why of all the drama, deceit, gratitude, and real friendship--can it be re-established? Though not quite a "formula" plot, there are some formula diversions such as the exposure of an alcohol-swilling woman who has ensnared a wealthy schoolmate of the friends. The plot also navigates the viewer through the murky underworld of the medical profession and some of the dire consequences.—"MG" Gopalan

- Dr. Sudhir Roy (Amitabh Bachchan) and Dr. Prashant Chaturvedi (Vinod Mehra) meet Ms. Kavita Goel (Raakhee) on a holiday. Dr. Ramnarayan Goel (A.K. Hangal) is Kavita's father. Kavita is enamored with Sudhir as he is the extrovert and funny one. Prashant is the quite and humble one and also a shy poet. Ramnarayan falls sick and is worried that this will spoil Kavita's vacation, so Sudhir and Prashant take turns spending time with her.
Though he himself was interested in Kavita, Sudhir recommends Prashant to her for marriage (he had found out that Prashant loves Kavita). When she asks why he himself can't marry her, Sudhir narrates his flashback. Sudhir was the second son of a poor school teacher and hopes that his big brother would get a job and provide for them. But when his big brother becomes mentally ill and his father dies, he resorts to petty thieving in a small gang. When police catch him, the Magistrate Chaturvedi (Om Shivpuri) recognizes him (Sudhir's father used to give tuition to Prashant and Sudhir would accompany him in those tuition classes) (Sudhir was very jealous of Prashant as he saw Prashant as privileged and himself as a victim of class politics) and adopts him. Sudhir grows up along with the magistrate's son Prashant and receives same education and becomes a pediatrician. After adoption Sudhir changes his view towards Prashant and is under his family's debt
Now he tells her that he can't marry her on medical grounds as his brother was a psychiatric patient and he has a criminal background.
Kavita and Prashant marry. Sudhir is invited to accompany Prashant and Kavita on their honeymoon. He calls Kavita his friend and considers himself a protector. Prashant leaves for America for higher studies, while Sudhir stays in Bombay to take care of the magistrate and Kavita. But Mr Chaturvedi dies after a fourth heart attack. Before dying he tells Sudhir not to tell Prashant and to let him complete his studies. He also asks Kavita to have faith in Sudhir when the time comes. He will never betray the family.
After coming back, Prashant starts a medical practice by buying a nursing home (he sells the ancestral home to pay for it) and charges more money from patients, especially to do illegal abortions. Sudhir tries to reason with him, but he wouldn't listen. Sudhir is more socialistic in his outlook towards his medical profession and does not see it only as a way to make money. He starts living in a flat near the children's hospital. Nandani Malhotra (Aruna Irani) is Prashant's secretary.
Sudhir meets on old friend Hiralal (Deven Verma). Apparently Hiralal has engaged with Sudhir's ex-flame Ruby Dutt (Sheetal), but doesn't know it. He invites Sudhir home to introduce his new fiance. Ruby has a spark for Sudhir and is jealous to see how publicly Sudhir flirts with Kavita. She spreads rumors in society about Sudhir's affair with Kavita. In response, Sudhir starts spending more time with ruby behind Hiralal's back. Kavita suspects something and confronts Sudhir, who admits that he is having an affair with Ruby. Kavita is disgusted by Sudhir's behavior. Sudhir takes Kavita to a mental hospital where she meet's Sudhir's elder brother Adhir, who went mad. Apparently he was Ruby's tutor. Ruby hit on Adhir but when she was caught she claims that he tried to rape her. Ruby hit him with a hunter and set her dogs on him and Adhir went mad with that behavior. Sudhir asks Ruby to run away with her and asks Hiralal to meet him at his house. Hiralal witnesses firsthand how his love for Ruby was one-sided and Ruby considered him a dim wit. Hiralal leaves. Sudhir reveals that he is Adhir's brother and wanted revenge against Ruby for the treatment meted out to his brother..
Prashant brings lots of cash into the house.. One day Nandita arrives at the house and pleads with Kavita to ask Prashant to stop the illegal activities in the nursing home. Kavita refuses to believe her. Nandita hands over all evidences to Kavita and says she only wants to help Prashant and leaves. One day, Prashant's patient dies during an abortion and he gets arrested. The patient was 5 months pregnant and was unmarried. Her boyfriend was a rich playboy who wanted the abortion at any cost and paid premium price for it.
After the girl dies, Nandita is not able to contain herself and calls the police. She tells Sudhir what has happened.. Sudhir removes all hospital records of the case, but Prashant thinks that Sudhir informed the police. Sudhir goes to Kavita for the evidence that Nandita gave her, but Kavita also thinks that Sudhir is trying to implicate Prashant. She says Sudhir is trying to destroy Prashant as he could not get Kavita. Sudhir agrees with her and leaves. Sudhir tries to pay off Nandita to leave Bombay, but she is adamant to see Prashant convicted. So, Sudhir injects Nandita with an empty syringe, which kills her.
Sudhir tells police that he was the actual culprit and changes all hospital records to prove that. In return, he takes the word of Prashant and Kavita to use medical profession to serve people, not to earn money. They give him their word and do exactly the same. Sudhir gets a nine-year sentence and loses his medical registration. After nine years, Kavita and Prashant welcome Sudhir from jail along with their son.
