Much of the filming of this movie took place in Monte Carlo, not far from David Niven's home, a villa called "La Fleur du Cap Mansion", located in the Saint Jean-Cap-Ferrat region where many rich people lived. This French Riviera house is where Niven resided during the final years of his life. This movie was shot close to Niven's house due to his failing health.
According to Bryan Forbes, it was during the shooting of this movie in 1981 that David Niven first began to show signs of Motor Neuron Disease, which would claim his life in 1983.
This was Kimberley Partridge's only acting role, in spite of publicity for this movie reporting that she had won a five-year contract with Columbia Pictures.
Bryan Forbes initially wanted William Holden to play the character of Charley Dunbar, but Holden turned down the part because his fee would be too low. In the end, the role was cast with Art Carney. Forbes later wrote in "A Divided Life" (1993) that he thought had Holden had made this movie, he "might have been alive today".
Publicity for this movie declared that it was the first time that David Niven had sung on-screen in nearly one hundred movies. The song that Niven sang in this movie was Noël Coward's "I've Been to a Wonderful Party".
