Gadar 2
Never mind the 200 toffee-nosed critics who will tell you that this film is crass, outdated, loud, etc etc … Gadar 2 is the best extraction thriller I’ve seen in ages. Sunny Deol is a far more convincing extractioner than Chris Hemsworth.
When Deol roars, you know he means business. And the Pakistani villains in this monstrously over-the-top drama get Tara Singh (is he the brother of Dara Singh?) really mad when they take his son a prisoner.
If you know Sunny Deol, and if you have seen Gadar: Ek Prem Katha (and who hasn’t!) you would know you can’t mess with Tara Singh without getting a blow on your head from the handpump.
Deol , for my money, is the best action hero in India and no Pathan or Tiger can replace him. As a loving husband (to Ameesha Patel who acts as though she is genie...

Bareilly Ki Barfi
Starring Ayushmann Khurana, Rajkummar Rao, Kriti Sanon
Directed by Ashiwini Iyer Tiwari
Early in the plot, we are told that the film’s heroine Bitti is no Sati Savitri. Thank God for small town mercies! In fact she adheres to another kind of stereotyping that Hindi cinema has lately embraced. You know, the small town girl who is hip and happy, sassy and sexy, rides two-wheelers and smokes whenever she can get her hands on a cancer stick, and when a prospective groom asks her if she is a virgin Bitti retorts, “No I am not… are you?”
Ah, long live the virgin bride.
Bitti is from the same feisty school of small-town rebellion as Kareena Kapoor in Jab We Met, Kangana Ranaut in Tanu Weds Manu and Alia Bhatt in Badrinath Ki Dulhaniya. In fact, what Bitti thinks to be streaks of rebellion (breakdancing, watching angrezi films,...

After having won acclaims galore from almost everyone alike for his stellar performance in the film Ship Of Theseus, Sohum Shah will now be seen in the character role of a flirtatious guy next door in director Khalid Mohammad's remake of the yesteryear's cult film Katha. Sohum will be playing the role of Bashudev, which was played by the legendary actor Farooque Shaikh in the original. Speaking about the same, Sohum said that Khalid had met him with another subject earlier, which did not work out. After getting the rights of the Katha remake, when Khalid offered him the role, he instantly agreed. When asked about the but-obvious comparison with the late Farooque Shaikh, Sohum said that Farooque sahib had his distinctive style and that he will be interpreting the character as per today's times. He added that it was indeed a delight to bring back this beautiful story...

On Saturday morning, Deepti Naval woke up to the rude shock of hearing that her favourite co-star Farooq Sheikh was no more. Stifling her sobs, Deepti says, "I spoke to Shabana in the morning. We were both simply howling on the phone. My last interaction with Farooq was two months ago at the Sharjah Book Fair. I was invited to read from my books and he was in conversation with me. He was a voracious reader. I woke up to say, 'what a beautiful morning'! And then a friend called and put the phone to the television where I hear Farooq is no more. What do I say? He was not just a constant part of my career, but also of my life. Oh God! It's so hard to believe he's gone. We worked together for the first time in Chashme Buddoor and we did 7-8 films together after that.

When one first heard about Listen Amaya, the reunion of master actor Farooque Shaikh and splendid actress Deepti Naval was the first thing that stood out, taking nothing away from the remaining team. Those who miss the 80s and the sweet, identifiable yet iconic films like Saath Saath, Chashme Buddoor and Katha etc. will swear by the Farooque-Deepti team, and the way they added substantially to the mentioned movies. The two could emote effortlessly, even without words, and even...

Khandhar (The Ruins) (1984)
My friends are amazed that I should rate a Mrinal Sen film among the very best in world cinema. In fact, there are two films of Mrinal-da that I rate very high—Oka oorie katha (a film in Telugu language based on the Munshi Premchand tale Kafan) made in 1977 and Khandhar (made in Hindi language). These are two films, for me, which raise the bar of quality of Indian cinema, decades after they were made.
Mrinal Sen is an acknowledged Leftist. Yet a viewer of Khandhar will not come across Communist propaganda or even a red flag. There are no political speeches. The Mrinal-da of the overtly political Chorus-that won awards at Moscow and Berlin festivals apart from top Indian national honors--and Calcutta ’71 cannot be recognized as such in Khandhar.
Why then do I rate Khandhar so high? Is it because it won the Golden Hugo...

Deepti Naval in a conversation tells Jyothi Venkatesh that Naseeruddin Shah is part of her psyche as an actor on the occasion of his 59th birthday. Over to Deepti Naval,
“I think that Naseer is a much better actor than a director, because he has not explored that side of his as a director. It is sad that though I have worked with him as a co-actor, in films like Katha, Mirch Masala, Mane, Junoon, Apna Jahaaan and Firaque, I did not get the opportunity to work under his direction when he made his debut as a film director. It is only when you get to see his body of work as an actor that you.
