Canada's 1st truly aboriginal show soon on DVD
clay-121 August 2001
This CBC TV show which ran from 1982 to 1987 was about the lives of Canadian Aboriginal peoples in Northern Ontario. Most of the townsfolk live in a reserve on a large northern lake and details stories of the town's main characters- most of these being young teenagers. The opening and closing theme music by Buffy Ste Marie is also very memorable.

This show was the original stepping stone for almost every famous native Canadian actor including: Tom Jackson, Graham Greene, Gary Farmer, Tantoo Cardinal, Monique Mojica, Margo Kane and Shirley Cheechoo. Other native produced TV shows like North of 60, The Rez and Moccassin Flats and Rabbit Fall owe gratitude to this show.

An inspirational series that paved the way for future Native First Nations programs

I really liked Spirit Bay because not only did it give viewers a realistic look at the lives of the Ojibway people on a northern Ontario reserve but it also was the very first Native program series that set the stage for all future Native TV programs not only on the CBC network but on all other networks as well. The series originally aired on TVO when it first came out and since then the re-runs have been shown on CBC, APTN, etc. Its too bad that the re-runs aren't on anymore since I would have taped all the episodes.

But........... anyways.................. these are my comments on this program.
