“Don’t let them bury me, I’m not dead!”
When we think of zombies, it’s only natural to first go right into everyone’s favorite flesh-eating ghouls that were popularized by George Romero in his genre classic Night of the Living Dead. But the idea of zombies has been around much longer and is actually steeped in fact. Haitian voodoo has claimed to create zombies for hundreds of years and in film, these were represented in some of our earliest horror movies. White Zombie and I Walked with a Zombie are two of the more famous ones, but the entire sub-genre has some fascinating watches. Horror legend Wes Craven brought a return to Voodoo...

Cinema fans have been familiar with Michael Berryman for decades. He made his first screen appearance in the 1975 film Doc Savage: The Man of Bronze, following that up with a role in the Best Picture winner One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. Next up was his most iconic role, that of the desert-dwelling cannibal Pluto in Wes Craven’s 1977 film The Hills Have Eyes, a role he reprised in the messy 1984 sequel The Hills Have Eyes Part II. He has gone on to rack up over one hundred more credits, including roles in films like Deadly Blessing, Invitation to Hell, Cut and Run, Weird Science, My Science Project, Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, Star Trek V: The Final Frontier, The Guyver, Beastmaster 2, Wizards of the Demon Sword, Teenage Exorcist, The Devil’s Rejects, Ed Gein: The Butcher of Plainfield, The Haunted Casino, The Lords of Salem, and Death House.

Even though grossly maligned when released in October 1995, Vampire in Brooklyn has become something of an unfortunate punch line in the careers of both its director and star. Although it’s been misunderstood and wrongly forced to take a time out in the horror genre’s “Shame Corner” over the last two decades, I still adore the hell out of Vampire in Brooklyn.
Starring Eddie Murphy, Angela Bassett, Allen Payne, Kadeem Hardison and John Witherspoon, and directed by Wes Craven, Vampire in Brooklyn is pretty much Nosferatu meets Coming to America with a Blaxploitation twist. Murphy plays a smooth-talking vampire from the Caribbean, named Maximillian, who must sire a companion to spend eternity with before the passing of the next full moon or he’ll be doomed to walk the Earth alone forever. As it turns out, a troubled NYPD Detective (played by Bassett) is destined to be Max’s...

Usually when someone famous passes away, I write a little thing on Twitter and Facebook, giving a little insight as to why they meant something to me. Be it a film that connected with me, a song that helped me through something tough, a book that I devoured multiple times and a piece or artwork that I could look at until the end of time, always seeing something new. But when it comes to someone like Wes Craven passing away, it feels as if I’m in an awful nightmare and there’s no Dream Warriors to save me and Freddy Krueger isn’t the wisecracking asshole but instead just death himself.
Wes Craven was one of the first filmmakers that I connected with at a young age. Of course, Freddy Krueger was the 80’s and being a child of the 80’s, I connected with slasher movies. Yes, I was...

Sosie Bacon may only be 21, but she has a lot going for her. On top of being 2014's Miss Golden Globe, through her father Kevin Bacon, she is connected to nearly everyone in Hollywood - including every other previous Miss Golden Globe, most of whom are also the daughters (or sons) of industry power players. And while some have a connection through their famous parents, others, such as Laura Dern (who happens to have famous parents), are also connected through their own work. Don't believe us? Here's how you get from young Ms. Bacon to all of her famous predecessors,...

Investigative Film Week | Horror On The Sea | Totally Serialized | Amblin Marathon
Investigative Film Week, London
Investigative journalism is an endangered craft, and there are many who would like it to stay that way, but this event shows why it's needed and what it can do. There are seven diverse documentaries, six of them UK premieres, each followed by a discussion with the film-maker. There are fresh angles on Arab democracy in Bahrain, The Forbidden Country, cyber-surveillance is studied in Tracked, and environmental pollution is to the fore in Bloodcoal and Law Of The Jungle.
The Foreign Press Association, WC2, & City University, EC1, Tue to 19 Jan
Horror On The Sea, Southend-on-Sea
An isolated hotel in an out-of-season, end-of-the-road estuary town feels like just the right setting for a January horror festival, even if the lack of big names and new releases here suggests it's only for the hardcore (and the hard-up:...

I cannot recall how many hours I spent in front of the boob tube in my youthful days in Long Beach, California – but I am sure the number is way too many. As far as network television went, there were only three really good channels to choose from: ABC, NBC, and CBS. Being the movie obsessor that I am, I had a hankering for the ’Movie of the Week’ programming that showcased everything from Hollywood heavyweights [Jaws, Close Encounters of the Third Kind] to made-for-television creepers [Chiller, Summer of Fear].
The last two pictures I named may not ring a bell, but if I told you that they were both directed by Wes Craven that might make you fall over. It is a little known fact that the father of Freddy Krueger has a pretty extensive background in the smaller medium. He has done everything from obscure television movies [Casebusters, Night Visions] to a pair of well-received series’ [Nightmare Cafe, The Twilight Zone].
