At this year’s Tony Awards, there are three actresses in contention for two separate performances in two separate productions they’ve appeared in this past season. They are Carolee Carmello, Crystal Lucas-Perry, and Phillipa Soo. Will any of them land at least one Tony nomination on May 2? Let’s go over each of the three.
Back in the fall, Carmello played John Dickinson in a limited run of Roundabout Theatre Company’s revival of “1776.” Now she’s playing the wicked stepmother in Andrew Lloyd Webber‘s newest musical, “Bad Cinderella.” Carmello has been nominated three times before. First in 1999 for the original production of “Parade,” then in 2006 for “Lestat,” and in 2013 for “Scandalous.”
As she is on the ballot for Best Featured Actress in a Musical twice, it’s possible she could split her support in the nominating process. However, what could hurt her more from getting nominated...

A new Broadway season has started, and there are currently seven productions of musicals set to open this fall. Could we be seeing any of them contend at next year’s Tony Awards? Below is an overview of the plot of each musical as well as the awards history of its author, cast, creative team, and the opening and (where applicable) closing dates.
“Almost Famous” (previews begin October 3; opens November 3)
In this stage musical adaptation of Cameron Crowe’s 2000 Academy Award-winning film, William Miller is an idealistic 15-year-old aspiring music journalist. When Rolling Stone magazine hires him to go on the road with an up-and-coming band, he is thrust into the rock-and-roll circus, where his love of music, his longing for friendship, and his integrity as a writer collide.
This musical has a book written by Crowe, who also co-wrote the score with Tony- and Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Tom Kitt.

The California Film Commission announced the latest round of tax credits for film productions on Monday, and once again Netflix emerged as the big winner.
The streaming giant was awarded $60.3 million in state credits, far outpacing Disney ($27.2 million), Warner Bros. ($16.2 million) and Amazon ($16 million). Netflix also led the way in the last round of credits in August 2021, taking $43.3 million.
This time, Netflix was granted credits for four projects: “Atlas,” “Beverly Hills Cop 4,” “Family Leave” and “Unfrosted.”
The latter project stars Jerry Seinfeld in an origin story about the Pop Tart, and was awarded $14.2 million in credits.
“We are so happy to get the California tax credit which enables us to make our whole movie there,” said Seinfeld, who is also writing, directing and producing the film for Netflix. “Having made all of the ‘Seinfeld’ series in L.A., I very much wanted to come back and shoot there again.

Kathie Lee Gifford is just getting started.
Sure, fans have been welcoming the former “Live With Regis and Kathie Lee” and “Today” co-host into their living rooms for decades. And yes, there are the Daytime Emmy nominations, her short-lived Broadway musical “Scandalous,” hit songs, books, her wine brand and various films and TV roles. Yet Gifford — a born entertainer and perennial dreamer — truly believes the best is yet to come as she continues her 67th turn around the sun and cements her place in Hollywood history with a star on the Walk of Fame.
“I am finally doing what I was born to do,” Gifford says. “There’s a happiness in me now, just when so many other people are retiring and doing whatever they’ve always longed to do. I never stopped doing what I was born to do, but now I have the freedom to totally and completely pursue it.

Cannes — Agc Television, the TV production-distribution division of Stuart Ford’s still fast expanding independent content studio Agc Studios, has landed worldwide rights to another high-profile doc-series which it describes as “probing” and “explosive”: Oliver Stone’s “JFK: Destiny Betrayed.”
The acquisition was announced early Monday by Agc Television president Lourdes Diaz.
The acquisition continues Agc Television substantial investment in non-fiction which is in high-demand in the streaming and premium cable space, allowing operators to reach diverse audience segments with high-profile original content at relatively modest cost.
Few filmmakers are as high-profile as Oliver Stone and“JFK” has proved the most controversial of his films. In the new doc-series, Stone and writer James Dieugenio, author of “Destiny Betrayed: JFK, Cuba, and the Garrison Case,” place now declassified files related to President Kennedy’s assassination in a far larger context, aiming to shine more light on what really happened in...

In my lifetime, I have always known The National Inquirer to be a trashy, fake news source that didn’t base any of its reports in reality, and just figured old people either thought it was real or liked the absurdity of it. This trailer for the documentary film Scandalous sheds an interesting light on the history of the tabloid and the real extent the staff went to to get photos and stories in deceptive and scandalous ways.
The doc interviews employees of the rag who are pretty frank about the seedy and underhanded clientele with which they dealt, even talking about bribes and payoffs they took from the rich and famous.
Here’s the synopsis:

"Look at the Enquirer in the realm of pop culture, rather than journalism." Magnolia Pictures has debuted an official trailer for the documentary Scandalous, directed by doc filmmaker Mark Landsman. Scandalous is the sensational true story of The National Enquirer, the infamous tabloid with a prescient grasp of its readers darkest curiosities. The film is a thrilling, eye-opening look at how this newspaper fed into the desires of many Americans to become obsessed with the rich, famous, and powerful people. "From its coverage of Elvis's death, to Monica Lewinsky and the O.J. Simpson murder trial, the National Enquirer rattled the foundations of American culture and politics, sometimes allegedly using payoffs and blackmail to get its scoops." This looks entertaining but also very frightening, a glimpse into how one paper can manipulate the minds of many, and turn them into addicts for gossip and scandal. Enjoy. Magnolia Pictures has acquired North American rights to the romance-drama “Two of Us,” the feature directorial debut of France-based Italian filmmaker Filippo Meneghetti.
Magnolia is planning a theatrical release early next year. The films follows two older women, played by Barbara Sukowa and Martine Chevallier, who live across the hall from each other in the same apartment building but have kept their romance hidden for decades.
The film held its world premiere as part of the Toronto International Film Festival’s Discovery program. Variety’s Mark Keizer said in his review that the film is “an affirmation of our universal desire for emotional intimacy and how the right connection can overcome all social and physical limitations. The fact that the relationship is between two lesbians well into their retirement years only makes the film even more quietly groundbreaking.”
“Two of Us” was written by Meneghetti, Malysone Bovorasmy and Florence Vignon.

Magnolia Pictures has acquired North American rights to “Scandalous,” a deep dive into the history of the National Enquirer, an influential tabloid that’s covered everything from celebrity breakups to alien landings. Directed by Mark Landsman (“Thunder Soul”), the film looks at the publication’s impact on journalism, culture, and politics.
“Scandalous” follows Generoso Pope, Jr., the man who purchased the New York Enquirer in the 1950s and rebranded and renamed the publication the National Enquirer. Pope used funds supplied by his godfather, reputed mob boss Frank Costello to make the purchase and charts the publication’s metamorphosis from a racing and sporting newspaper into a grocery store tabloid filled with stories of medical oddities, conspiracy theories, and paparazzi photos.
“The real story behind the National Enquirer is like a classic monster movie from the 1950s where initially the creature doesn’t intend to harm anyone, but is soon wreaking havoc on the population,...

Director Sam Taylor-Johnson’s “A Million Little Pieces,” starring her husband Aaron Taylor-Johnson, has been collecting dust since it bowed at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2018. The film, which will receive a U.S. release on December 6 from Momentum Pictures, has finally received a first trailer.
“A Million Little Pieces” is adapted from the notorious 2003 “memoir” of the same name by author James Frey (played here by Mr. Taylor-Johnson). The book hit controversy at the time when Frey was outed by whistleblowing website The Smoking Gun for having fabricated long stretches of this harrowing autobiography of his crack addiction — most notably in a sequence where a dentist refuses to give Frey anesthesia while extracting his rotten teeth.
After touting the memoir through her popular book club, Oprah Winfrey memorably brought Frey and his Doubleday editor Nan Talese onto her talk show to apologize for deceiving readers. The book’s reputation has since been redeemed,...

As the movie that ushered in both the modern-day superhero genre and a new peak in the art of saturation marketing, Tim Burton’s “Batman” has a legacy that’s hard to overstate. Virtually everything associated with the 1989 comic-book adaptation became a cultural phenomenon, from Burton’s mischievous, mainstream-goth aesthetic to the meta-narrative of the film’s record-breaking box office receipts.
Prince’s multiplatinum soundtrack for the film — featuring the hits “Batdance,” “Partyman” and “Scandalous” — was no exception, ushering filmmakers and musicians alike into a new era of “Music Inspired By” album opportunities even as it rescued the iconic performer’s career after it had suffered some financial setbacks in the wake of his extravagant touring productions.
Thirty years on, the “Batman” LP is still remembered fondly by fans who associate it with the film, especially those who were first exposed to the Purple One’s work through it. But...

Jeanine Pirro’s return to Fox News remains in question, following the cabler’s decision to bump her primetime program for a second consecutive week.
Pirro’s Justice w/ Judge Jeanine, which airs Saturdays at 9/8c, was first preempted by Fox News on March 16 and quietly replaced by a rerun of the docuseries Scandalous. The scheduling change was not formally announced ahead of time but was reflected on the network’s online schedule, as well as select on-screen cable guides. “Justice With Judge Jeanine,” the Saturday-night opinion show led by Jeanine Pirro, will be off the Fox News schedule for a second week in the wake of remarks she made about a Muslim congresswoman.
The network’s online schedule shows that it will run another repeat of the documentary series “Scandalous” in its place Saturday night at 9 p.m.
Fox News declined to comment and has in recent days said it will not elaborate on what it has called “scheduling changes.” There has been recent speculation that Pirro, a fierce supporter of President Donald Trump, could return to the schedule Saturday, March 30. The president has taken to Twitter to express his support for Pirro’s show.

Ahead of the Us Blu-ray release of Airplane!, star Robert Hays has revealed why the third movie never happened...
Much though we love Airplane!, we can’t say that it’s the kind of film that was crying out for a high definition release. Nonetheless, in the States, a Blu-ray of the film is coming out (although it's exclusive to one retail chain for the time being), and as part of the promotional work for it, the star of the movie, Robert Hays, has been nattering about the film.
Over at Moviefone, he was asked why a third Airplane! movie never happened. Airplane! 2: The Sequel, of course, took place without the direct involvement of the original Zaz creative trio (David Zucker, Jim Abrahams, Jerry Zucker), so a third movie in the series should have been possible. But, it seems, Hays put his foot down.

Moviefone caught up with Robert Hays, who is promoting the release of "Airplane" on Blu-ray, and asked him why a third "Airplane" film never happened, considering that the sequel left room for it. "It was very close," he said. "You have to understand the atmosphere, 31 years ago. Sequels were frowned upon. You were really looked down upon if you did sequels. They'd go, 'Oh, Robert 'Airplane' Hays,' you ever gonna do something besides 'Airplane'?' Nowadays, sequels are called franchises. Now they look for them." Hays continued: "I was in London doing a film called 'Scandalous,' and they were negotiating for doing 'Airplane 3,' and it had really gotten to me. I was being ragged on by the press a lot when I'd go to events and the paparazzi is there, and they would rag on me. I said, 'Nah, don't wanna do it.' Of course...
