A fairly good adaptation of the famous novel by Theodor Storm (at least it is famous in Germany). The film was made in East Germany (GDR) in 1984, five years before the opening of the frontier. In any case it's better than the west German screen movie from 1978 because of its historical accuracy. The inevitable social "message" stays very close to the novel.
