There have already been several high points on Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band’s 2024 tour, and Sunday night’s show in Columbus, Ohio, provided another one.
The Boss and co. turned in an epic three-hour, 30-song set that saw “Youngstown,” “Streets of Fire,” and “I’m Goin’ Down” all performed live for the first time since at least 2017. The choice to kick off the show with “Youngstown” was especially appropriate as it was written about Youngstown, Ohio, located just two-and-half hours away from Columbus. Meanwhile, “Streets of Fire” has only been performed by Springsteen 23 times since 1978, and not since 2017.

If you needed any proof that Bruce Springsteen is fully recovered from health ailments that derailed his 2023 tour (some of which may or may not have been the result of Larry David), look no further than the performance he and the E Street Band turned in at the Kia Forum in Inglewood, California on Thursday night.
The show ran a grand total of three hours and 18 minutes and featured a sprawling 32-song setlist including several tracks that hadn’t been played live in close to a decade. What’s more, Springsteen’s wife, Patti Scialfa, made her first appearance on the 2024 leg of the tour, joining her husband for performances of “Tougher Than the Rest” and “Fire.”

Three hours into Bruce Springsteen’s epic return to Los Angeles on Thursday night with the E Street Band, he stared down the sold-out crowd at the Forum. “Do you have anything left?” he shouted, midway through “Twist and Shout,” the second-to-last song of his first L.A. show in eight years. Five decades in, the magic of a Springsteen show remains: He always seems to have a little bit left in the tank.

In 1963, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr played the Royal Variety Show, one of their most stressful shows to date. Their popularity was on the rise and, suddenly, they found themselves performing for a large, wealthy audience. Lennon channeled his nerves into joking with the audience. Harrison rolled his eyes at parts of Lennon’s performance.
George Harrison said John Lennon was over the top during one show
In 1963, The Beatles nervously prepared to play the Royal Variety Show. Everyone in the audience bought expensive tickets and the Queen Mother was in attendance. Lennon pointed out their wealth as he introduced the band’s final song.
“For our last number, I’d like to ask your help,” he said, per The Beatles Anthology. “The people in the cheaper seats clap your hands, and the rest of you, if you’d just rattle your jewelry. We’d like...

In 1963, John Lennon cracked jokes onstage when The Beatles performed in the Royal Variety Performance. The band nervously took the stage and played for their large, wealthy audience. According to Lennon, they received multiple other requests to play the same show over the years. He shared why they turned all of them down.
John Lennon said The Beatles often turned down requests to play for the royal family
After several years of working together, The Beatles’ popularity took off in 1963. Their fanbase was growing exponentially and, soon, they were performing for the Queen Mother.
“The fame really started from when we played the Palladium,” Paul McCartney said in The Beatles Anthology. “Then we were asked to do the Royal Command Performance and we met the Queen Mother, and she was clapping.”

Six months after Bruce Springsteen suspended his world tour so he could recover from a painful peptic ulcer, he was back onstage with the E Street Band Tuesday night in Phoenix, for the first gig of the year. And while the setlist was largely the same as the one he delivered nightly in 2023, he did make some minor alterations, and create space for further additions as the year progresses.

Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band kicked off their 2024 tour with a blazing 29-song performance at Footprint Center in Phoenix, Arizona on Tuesday night. It marked the band’s first performance since Springsteen was forced to postpone the remainder of the band’s 2023 tour due to a bout with peptic ulcer disease.
Thankfully, The Boss now appears to be fully recovered. The 29-song set stuck closely to the epic shows Springsteen played towards the end of his 2023 run, including performances of “Night,” “Darlington County,” “Darkness on the Edge of Town,” “Spirit in the Night,” “Mary’s Place,” and “Backstreets.” Once again, the encore proved particularly stellar, featuring “Born To Run,” “Rosalita (Come Out Tonight),” “Glory Days,” “Dancing in the Dark,” and “Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out.”

The Beatles made their first of three appearances on CBS’ “The Ed Sullivan Show” on Feb 9, 1964. Sullivan knew he had a really big “shew” that night, telling the audience mainly of teeny-boppers and teenage girls that “our theater’s been jammed with newspapermen and hundreds of photographers from all over the world. And these veterans agree with me that the city never has witnessed the excitement stirred by these youngsters from Liverpool…Now tonight you’re going to be twice entertained by them…Ladies and gentlemen, The Beatles.”
Their fans screamed, cried and grabbed their hair when John, Paul, George and Ringo performed “All My Loving,” “Till There Was You” and “She Loves You.” They came back 35 minutes later in the show to sing “I Saw Her Standing There” and their No. 1 hit “I Want to Hold Your Hand.” The ratings for the episode scored to 23.24 million households. Beatlemania was sweeping America before Feb.

Issa López's "True Detective: Night Country," the fourth season of the pulp crime series created by Nic Pizzolatto, kicks off with one heck of a hook. Scientists holed up at the Tsalal Research Station on the outskirts of Ennis, Alaska (which is itself on the outskirts of civilization in the sparsely populated state) are winding down after a long day of doing ... well, whatever it is they do up there (the first episode does not make this clear). They're doing laundry, making dinner, settling in for a movie ("Ferris Bueller's Day Off") with a bowl of microwave popcorn, and evidently content to be where they are.
And then, in an instant, they're not there anymore.
A delivery man who shows up with supplies, expecting help in unloading his truck, wanders through the station seemingly seconds after the sequence we've just observed (Matthew Broderick is still rocking out to The...

The Beatles‘ “You’ve Really Got a Hold on Me” was originally by Smokey Robinson’s band The Miracles. Robinson has no memory of hearing that cover for the first time. It left an impression on him anyway. Sveral other major artists recorded “You’ve Really Got a Hold on Me” as well.

The Beatles weren’t civil rights activists, but a soul singer said the group’s success was “a civil rights breakthrough.” He wasn’t the only one to say something like that. Here’s a look at how Black singers inspired the Fab Four.
A singer said The Beatles and Elvis Presley moved helped the civil rights movement
Maxwell is a neo-soul singer known for tunes such as “Ascension (Don’t Ever Wonder),” “Sumthin’ Sumthin,” and “Lake by the Ocean.” His music doesn’t sound much like The Beatles’. However, Maxwell works in a musical idiom that paved the way for the Fab Four.
During a 2017 interview with The San Diego Union-Tribune, Maxwell discussed the issue of The Beatles and cultural appropriation. “It’s a very touchy subject,” he said. “Because it’s like it was appropriation, but there was a certain window that was opened that never would have...

A 1990s rock star hated The Beatles‘ “Got to Get You Into My Life” and said he would never play it. That’s saying something, considering this star has covered Beatles tunes over and over! “Got to Get You Into My Life” eventually became a hit once the American public got more into funk music.
A star hated the horns from The Beatles’ ‘Got to Get You Into My Life’
Wayne Coyne is the frontman of The Flaming Lips, a trippy band most known for the hit “She Don’t Use Jelly.” His band once released a track-by-track remake of The Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band that is far more avant-garde than the original. Some of it sounds downright abrasive! During a 2014 interview with Newsweek promoting the remake album, Coyne named “Got to Get You Into My Life” as his least-favorite Fab Four track.

Rudolph Isley, a founding member of the musical group, the Isley Brothers, has died at age 84.
“There are no words to express my feelings and the love I have for my brother. Our family will miss him. But I know he’s in a better place,” said Ronald Isley in a statement.
Rudolph first started singing in church with his brothers Ronald and O’Kelly Isley. He was just a teenager when the group’s hit song, “Shout,” debuted in the 1950s.
The brothers then released “Twist and Shout” in the 1960s, which the Beatles used as the closing song on their debut album.
Other popular Isley Brothers songs include “This Old Heart of Mine (Is Weak for You),” “It’s Your Thing” and “Fight the Power (Part 1).”

Over 40 years after his tragic death on December 8, 1980, John Lennon‘s music, both with The Beatles and in his solo career, is fondly remembered by fans who were there at the time and has gained admiration with every new generation that has come along. In addition, Lennon’s writing and particularly his vocals have been held in high esteem by music critics around the world for decades.
The Oscar and Grammy winner’s contribution to the band shifted as the band passed from genre to genre — from pop idols to sound experimenters to psychedelia and finally to political activism — and he adapted his vocals to meet each of those needs. From his joyous vocals on “A Hard Day’s Night” to his slightly-high work on “Strawberry Fields Forever” to the rollicking “Twist and Shout,” Lennon’s range with the band was remarkable.

The Isley Brothers were one of the first bands to put Jimi Hendrix on the map. They also ended a career dry spell the guitarist had been experiencing in 1963/64. Here’s how Hendrix’s audition went.

The Monkees’ Davy Jones loved The Beatles’ music even though it was ‘manufactured’
During a 2006 interview with The Bob Show, Jones said he was friends with all of The Beatles. He was a big fan of the group, and he praised George Harrison’s songwriting in particular. He thought George wasn’t given his dues as a musician. In addition, Jones revealed he loved The Beatles’ “Penny Lane” so much that he listened to it thousands of times.
“Don’t get this wrong: The Beatles were the first manufactured group,” he said. “Not The Monkees. It was The Beatles.”
Jones said The Beatles’ manager, Brain Epstein, fired the Fab Four’s first drummer.

The Monkees are often thought of as a manufactured group. Davy Jones said The Beatles were the first manufactured group, not The Monkees. In addition, he compared The Beatles’ look to characters from a famous Broadway musical.

In 1962, The Beatles gathered in Emi Studios to record their debut album, Please Please Me. While they had been a band for several years, Beatlemania was still a decent way off. Please Please Me was a step toward mass success, though. The last song they recorded for the album became a well-known number for the band. They hadn’t initially planned to include it on the album, though. Here’s how they decided to record it at the last minute.
The Beatles included ‘Twist and Shout’ on their debut album at the last minute
After hours of recording, the studio had officially closed. The Beatles and producer George Martin felt they could sneak in a little more recording time, though. The problem was that they hadn’t settled on the right song to close out the album.

Only one of Louis Armstrong’s songs hit No. 1 in the United States. It stopped The Beatles‘ “Do You Want to Know a Secret” from becoming a No. 1 hit. Subsequently, Paul McCartney revealed he’s not a big fan of “Do You Want to Know a Secret.”
1 cover by Louis Armstrong outperformed The Beatles’ ‘Do You Want to Know a Secret’
Many of Armstrong’s songs were covers. For example, “When the Saints Go Marching In,” “La Vie en rose,” and “Dream a Little Dream of Me” were all initially by other artists. His hit “Hello, Dolly!” was originally from the Broadway musical of the same name.
The Billboard Book of Number 1 Hits said the latter song topped the Billboard Hot 100. Jazz wasn’t huge in the 1960s, so it’s incredible that Armstrong’s “Hello, Dolly!” performed that well. In addition, the tune blocked The Beatles’ “Do You Want...

Paul McCartney and John Lennon are among the most successful songwriting duos ever and wrote many songs that dominated the U.S. charts. When they had their first No. 1 hit in the U.S., it was a sign that Beatlemania was in full swing and signaled the beginning of the British Invasion. However, The Beatles did not perform the first song on the U.S. charts that is credited to Lennon-McCartney.
The first song on the U.S. charts credited to John Lennon and Paul McCartney was performed by Del Shannon
In the early 1960s, The Beatles were becoming rising stars in the U.K. Their first single, “Love Me Do,” debuted in the U.K. in 1962 and peaked at No. 17. In 1963, The Beatles released “From Me to You”, which became their first No. 1 hit on the official U.K. Singles chart.

Los Angeles, June 29 (Ians) Rock music legend Bruce Springsteen is returning to London’s Hyde Park — where he was famously cut off 11 years ago — in July.
But this time, the organisers said, ‘The Boss’ will not be silenced. Bruce is going to take stage earlier, at around 7 p.m., so his ‘notoriously’ long set won’t run over and fall foul of the 10.30 p.m. curfew dedaline, reports ‘The Mirror’.
A source said the scheduling would ensure that the icon gets to play all his hits with no interruption when he takes to the stage next on July 6 and July 8.
The source told ‘The Mirror’, “Fans needn’t worry… There will be plenty of time to hear what will be two historic sets.”
The 73-year-old, whose hits include ‘Born In The U.S.A.’, ‘Dancing In The Dark’, and ‘Streets of Philadelphia’, among many others, last played at the Hyde...

The Beatles’ steady rise to the top in England stood in contrast to their explosion of popularity in the United States. They went from unknown to the country’s most popular band virtually overnight. Their records flew off shelves. Young fans like Bruce Springsteen bought whatever Fab Four merchandise they could get their hands on. That included one Beatles song that Springsteen said was a rip-off that he listened to constantly anyway.
Bruce Springsteen said ‘My Bonnie’ was a ‘rip-off’ and ‘not great,’ but he listened to it anyway
The Boss was one of the millions of young music fans bowled over by The Beatles when they arrived in the U.S. in 1964. Those scores of fans helped the band place 64 songs in the Billboard top 100 between 1964 and 1970. Even the Fab Four’s self-professed lousy songs performed well in the U.S.

"Ferris Bueller's Day Off" remains the quintessential '80s story of teenage suburban revolt almost forty years after it was released. Matthew Broderick had already appeared on Broadway and made his big screen debut with "War Games" and the criminally under-seen medieval fantasy romance "Ladyhawke." But it was his role as a dashing high school rebel that sent his career into the stratosphere.
With all the natural charisma Broderick gave Ferris, it seemed perfectly reasonable that his character would be able to stay home, play sick, and skip school while still being the perfect son and the most popular kid in high school. Ferris made kids everywhere think they could do anything -- even jump on board a parade float lip-synching "Twist and Shout" in front of a roaring crowd. Everyone wanted to either be Ferris or be around him, and Broderick was electric in the part.

The Beatles have impacted every generation. Despite being over 60 years old, modern audiences still recognize The Beatles’ music, and many listen to it consistently. However, it’s not exactly music that would get played in the club, as that’s typically pop and dance songs. Still, Paul McCartney said he heard one song by The Beatles at a party, and everyone kept dancing.

“Twist and Shout” is a 1961 song written by Bert Berns and Phil Medley. The Top Notes originally recorded the track but it didn’t become a hit until it was covered by The Isley Brothers in 1962. The Isley Brothers’ version reached No. 17 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and No. 42 on the U.K. Singles chart.

Paul McCartney and John Lennon were songwriting equals in The Beatles, but the bassist still looked up to his bandmate. He craved compliments that rarely came. Macca praised John by calling him the Elvis of the Beatles, but he typically drew the line at mimicking his friend. Still, Paul copied John in one of the last songs he made as a member of the Fab Four.

The Beatles stood on their last legs when they recorded Abbey Road in 1969. The contentious recording sessions that produced the Let It Be album and infighting over who would be their next manager all but drove the band apart. Abbey Road was the last thing the band did as a foursome.

The Beatles achieved their first taste of fame at a time when singles were more important than albums. The short players didn’t require a huge investment from music fans in terms of money and time. Listeners were more likely to buy singles, which made them more lucrative. The Fab Four helped make albums complete artistic statements, and some of their most famous album songs weren’t singles. On the flip side, some of The Beatles’ best songs got left off studio records. Let’s look at seven of them (in chronological order).

It’s hardly a stretch to say The Beatles dominated the 1960s, especially from 1963 onward. Their energetic debut album, Please Please Me, bowled over young English music fans. The United States finally caught up nearly a year later with the Fab Four’s historic appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show. The fact that The Beatles had 71 songs land in the top 100 of the Billboard singles chart is as impressive as their 20 No. 1 hits.

Good things take time. The Beatles proved it. Paul McCartney and John Lennon needed time to grow as songwriters, so the Fab Four’s early records contained many covers. Another artist called John and Paul idiots as composers — then recorded one of their songs anyway. Even though The Beatles covered several of his songs in their live set, Paul threw Elvis Presley under the bus when explaining why Buddy Holly had a bigger impact on the Beatles.

Artists such as Elvis Presley, Bill Haley, Eddie Cochran, and Buddy Holly helped introduce post-War England to rock ‘n’ roll music. Judging by some of The Beatles’ earliest setlists, Elvis greatly impacted the band.

Ringo Starr and John Lennon always had a close friendship. They were the two oldest Beatles members, lived as neighbors, and hung out together after the Fab Four fractured. The drummer was the last Beatle to see John before he died, and Ringo was blown away by his mindset at the time. Years earlier, John’s singing freaked out Ringo, and we understand where the drummer is coming from.

Thankfully, there aren’t many repetitive Beatles songs, but a few fell through the cracks and into the band’s catalog. Here are the 10 most repetitive Beatles songs.
The Beatles | Mirrorpix/Getty Images 10. ‘Twist and Shout’
Many of The Beatles’ early songs were repetitive, but “Twist and Shout” was one of the worst. All the verses are very similar and start with: “Well, shake it up, baby, now/ Twist and shout/ Come on, come on, come, come on, baby, now/ Come on and work it on out/ Well, work it on out, honey.” Then, the song closes out, repeating, “Well, shake it, shake it, shake it, baby, now.” It gets a bit annoying after a while.

9. ‘It Won’t Be Long’
“It Won’t Be Long” is repetitive in the first verse. The song starts with: “It won’t be long, yeah/ Yeah (yeah) yeah (yeah) yeah/ It won’t be long,...

No one likes when their favorite artist’s songs get overplayed on the radio or anywhere else. They’re ruined simply because of how many times you hear them. Unfortunately, The Beatles have many overplayed tunes, and some weren’t even that great, to begin with. Here are 10 of the most overplayed Beatles songs.
The Beatles | Mirrorpix/Getty Images 10. ‘I Saw Her Standing There’
Many fans like “I Saw Her Standing There,” but it’s too overplayed. It’s one of The Beatles’ earliest songs, and everyone knows the lyrics. However, something about it, particularly the guitar riff, is boring after hearing it for years. It’s on everyone’s Beatles playlists, but apart from it being one of their biggest songs, does anyone even like it anymore?

The Beatles were a talented band that developed many innovative recording techniques and instrumental playing styles. However, a few of their songs demanded a lot out of them and were tough to record. Whether it was due to intense instrumentation or blaring vocals, The Beatles almost went overboard on a few songs. Here are 4 Beatles songs the band struggled to record.
‘Twist and Shout’ The Beatles | David Farrell/Redferns
‘Twist and Shout’ is a cover of the 1962 track by The Isley Brothers. The Beatles had been recording at Abbey Road Studios for 12 hours for the album Please Please Me. They ended the session with a bang by recording “Twist and Shout”. John Lennon took on the demanding vocal performance and barely got through it. In The Beatles Anthology, Lennon said he was “bitterly ashamed” of his performance on the song, even though it turned into a hit.

One of The Monkees’ songs was inspired by The Beatles’ “Yesterday.” Another one of The Monkees’ songs was inspired by The Beatles’ “Day Tripper.” The latter song has a classic opening guitar riff. The Beatles | Fiona Adams / Contributor
The Beatles‘ songs and The Monkees’ songs often get compared to one another. Some Monkees songs have an awesome Beatles vibe. For example, one Prefab Four tune was consciously inspired by “Yesterday.”
4. ‘Let’s Dance On’
“Let’s Dance On” is a great dance song. It has a bit of a resemblance to The Beatles’ version of “Twist and Shout.” Regardless, “Let’s Dance On” is one of the best tunes from The Monkees’ self-titled album. “Let’s Dance On” probably could have been a hit single but, alas, it languishes in obscurity. Hopefully, a new movie or show will make “Let’s Dance On” famous.
3. ‘I Wanna Be Free’

The Beatles achieved many extraordinary feats as recording artists through their years in the music industry. However, none was more stunning than the day they dominated the top four slots of the Billboard singles charts on Mar. 28, 1964.

It’s 10pm on Monday 11 February 1963, and as the Abbey Road clock ticks down the final minutes of an exhausting 12-hour session, John Lennon strips to the waist, doses up on Zubes throat lozenges and throws himself into one final death-or-glory charge into rock’n’roll history.
“The last song nearly killed me,” he’d say later, recalling that last-minute take of “Twist and Shout”, which The Beatles managed to squeeze into the closing seconds of the one-day recording session for their debut album Please Please Me. A second take was abandoned as Lennon’s voice gave out altogether after a full day of howling and harmonising, powering through on throat sweets, milk and the ferocious Hamburg spirit that had seen them through countless late-night rock’n’roll marathons at the Kaiserkeller. “My voice wasn’t the same for a long time after,” he said. “Every time I swallowed it was like sandpaper.
