Karin Mani , Robert Tessier , Ossie Davis , plus Angel, YoYo, Kit Carson & Solly
merklekranz11 February 2011
"Avenging Angel" is a worthy, but different sequel to "Angel". The same seedy Hollywood Boulevard locations, are again used to great advantage. Betsy Russell plays "Angel" this time, and along with her street comrades, Rory Calhoun and Susan Tyrrell, they go after the mobsters who killed their friend, Lt. Andrews ( Robert F. Lyons). Karin Mani has a brief, but memorable nude shower scene, Robert Tessier is a helpful tattoo artist, while Ossie Davis plays a police captain. The movie has moments of welcome humor, especially relating to springing Rory Calhoun from a sanitarium. Sure the violence is cartoon-like, but "Avenging Angel" is entertaining, and that's really all that matters. - MERK

Heavens to Betsy—just look at Angel now!
BA_Harrison25 September 2011
Wow, Molly Stewart, AKA former prostitute 'Angel', sure has changed in the three or four years since she quit hooking on the Boulevard: now played by Betsy Russell (replacing winsome Donna Wilkes, star of the first film), she's gained a couple of cup sizes, developed longer legs, sports an impressive perm, and is training to be a lawyer, thanks to the help of her guardian, Hollywood vice cop Lt. Andrews (Robert F. Lyons).

Molly's new life goes on hold, however, after Andrews is shot dead by gangsters; teaming up with her old pals, aging cowboy Kit Carson (Rory Calhoun) and lesbian landlady Solly Mosler (Susan Tyrell), she once again walks the sleazy sidewalks of Hollywood as Angel, this time looking for revenge.

For this cheesy sequel to his 1984 exploitation movie Angel, director Robert Vincent O'Neill throws any sense of realism in the nearest side-alley dumpster, opting instead for a much campier approach, his eccentric misfit characters even more exaggerated than before, his villains ridiculously reprehensible, and the violence about as cartoonish as it gets.

The film begins promisingly enough, with a car full of gangsters loading their weapons while heading downtown to 'off' a big-breasted undercover cop (who is busy taking a shower, natch!), a blaring Bronski Beat soundtrack giving everything that delightfully tacky 80s vibe. When the killers make their move, they blast their victims in the guts, resulting in some messy squib-work. Unfortunately, after this impressive opening, everything gets rather too comical for my liking (Rory Calhoun riding a gurney like a rodeo champ, as Angel and Solly bust him out of a sanitarium being the most cringe-worthy moment).

Still, even though Avenging Angel lacks the gritty edge that I generally look for in my vigilante/revenge flicks, and gets really, really dumb towards the end, the ever present sight of the delectable Miss Russell in a series of tight-as-you-like outfits, including a very sexy nurse get-up, makes the film just about bearable (no nudity from the star, but hey, I've always got her 1983 film Private School for that!).

Much less serious and dark than the original Angel, but more fun!
gkaps00717 February 2020
Completely tone than the first movie. Where the first Angel has a serious, somewhat sad, and grim take on the story of a young, smart woman working the seedy streets of Hollywood to pay for her private schooling and apartment, this movie is made with a much lighter tone.

Betsy Russell takes over the role from Donna Wilkes. She does fine, but lacks the vulnerability and hurt that Wilkes brought to the role. Rory Calhoun is back and any restraint he used in the first movie is gone here. He plays WAY over the top, along with Susan Tyrell as the wacky, psychopathic apartment landlord. It is great! He is very likable and brings heart to the movie. Something, as much I as love her, Russell can not manage too well.

The plot is more of the same. This time, Angel's cop buddy/mentor (played by a completely different looking actor from the first) is murdered and since the cops aren't doing much, it is up to Angel and her gang of misfits to avenge his death. The tone, as mentioned before, is quite silly this time around. It now feels more comic book adventure and less gritty drama.

Everyone in this movie is out of their minds. Calhoun is convinced (and it never proven he is wrong) he is Kit Carson, legendary cowboy. Tyrell is a rodeo clown without a rodeo. Every time she shows up, the movie cranks up to an eleven! There is Micheal J Pollard look-alike,Steven M. Porter as "Yo-Yo Charlie". He is fun, but underused in this critics opinion. And finally, they add a new character, Johnny Glitter, played with zero restraint by Barry Pearl. I love how every time he enters the scene he is accompanied with a cloud of glitter. He is a very silly, unreal character. Somewhere is in all of this mess, Ossie Davis shows up a police captain who doesn't follow the rules, and a baby that is very well behaved, even while being hung over a high drop.

Avenging Angel can be a fun movie if you go in with little expectations and just want to have some fun. Sit back, riff with your friends, and forget about the movie soon after.

Dreadful, rushed and anemic
HughBennie-77718 May 2020
What surprising elements redeemed the original, especially during its exciting climax, are nonexistent here. Even the wacky street characters are like something out of a TV show. Shopping Cart Sally? Johnny Glitter? The action sequences never improve from the opening, while the replacement Angel is nice to look at with zero depth. A lot of embarrassment captured onscreen demonstrates that a rushed sequel is most often a lost cause.

Horrible
fmarkland3220 August 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This time Angel, now a law student hits the streets to get vengeance on the mob guys who killed the cop (her father figure) who got her off the streets, while getting gun-slinging help from Rory Calhoun, Susan Tyrell and some guy with a Yo-Yo in this boring and very unfunny sequel. Avenging Angel, after the surprising quality of its predecessor, is a total letdown. You look at the back of the cover and you see a tied up guy with a bullet hole in his head, Angel pointing a gun and you see Rory Calhoun looking like he's going gun-slinging and yet the context of both scenes aren't action or even exploitive but in a comic tone. Now the first 20 minutes hint at something promising, sleazy action wise along the lines of a Death Wish 4 rip off, but then it just gets really dull, until you find to your horror, these scenes are supposed to be funny. Avenging Angel's Betsy Russell has some screen presence (Though Part 1s Wilkes is a better actress) and warmth, but this embarrassingly bad movie gives her nothing to work with.

Avenging Angel
Scarecrow-881 July 2009
Warning: Spoilers
Molly Stewart(Betsy Russell)returns to the Boulevard after her mentor and guardian, a detective, is gunned down while trying to stop gangsters who had just shot dead an undercover cop and her parents in cold blood. Donning her "Angel" persona once again, this time a college graduate and skilled lawyer, she'll seek out those responsible with the help of some old friends.

Director Robert Vincent O'Neill and writer Joseph Michael Cala do not duplicate the grit that made the previous film so arresting, and the tone(..despite the violence)is a lot goofier. The threat in this film, a mobster and his sadistic hoods, are rather bumbling when they aren't blowing innocent folks away with shot gun blasts. Russell(..known for her work in the SAW series and the silly slasher CHEERLEADER CAMP), in the titular role, is undeniably sexy and the camera(..and her choice of "street wardrobe")clings to her very tantalizing figure.

After watching it, I'm not sure this sequel was necessary, this was obviously made by New World Pictures to cash in on the original entry. Three actors from the previous film return, Rory Calhoun(..as dependable, aging cowboy stuntman relic Kit Carson), Steven M Porter(..as Yo-Yo Charlie, the street comedian in Charlie Chaplin costume), and Susan Tyrell(..as profane "Jewish dyke" hotel tenant Solly Mosler, who carries a facial expression as if she sucked on a sour lemon)to assist Angel in getting revenge on those responsible for the murder of her detective friend, Andrews(Robert F Lyons). Ossie Davis, wasted in a rather thankless role, is Captain Harry Moradian, out to find the one on his force responsible for getting two good cops killed. Barry Pearl is a new street character added to the team of "misfit vigilantes", as Johnny Glitter, wanted by the mob for he was at the crime scene when Andrews was shot. Paul Lambert is Arthur Gerard, the mobster behind property corruption that's tearing apart the district around the Boulevard. Frank Doubleday(freakshow Romero of Escape from New York fame)is Gerard's son, Miles. Ross Hagen plays the nasty killer Ray Mitchell who enjoys his line of work and Hoke Howell has a funny cameo as a drunkard who "operates" a building containing an endless supply of bums.

Despite a rather lackluster scenario featuring a team containing a former hooker, elderly retired cowboy stuntman, and sourpuss tenant against ruthless gangsters, cinematographer Peter Lyons Collistor offers some fine photography, capturing the bright lights of the streets especially well. The scummy atmosphere that made the original film more realistic and disturbing seems missing in AVENGING ANGEL. Furthermore, Russell looks nothing at all like Donna Wilkes(..Angel from the first film)and the authenticity is rather lacking..would those she hasn't seen in four years really believe Russell was the Angel they knew and love?

Hilarious flick

Warning: Spoilers
Haven't seen the 1st but came across this late at nite on tubi, if it's as absurd as this I'd like to see it. The scene with the baby(or rather the doll) getting dropped off the ledge was laugh at loud worthy. If u want to watch some campy 80s hilarity choose this!

Not a bad avengement
videorama-759-8593919 March 2020
Here's a more racier, livelier product, than the well intentioned, melodramatic, dull, tamed vehicle that preceded it. Four years on, Angel has a new life, champion runner/lawyer. The murdered cop who saved her in the first one, is the catalyst which drives her back to LA, to track down, and kill the nasty culprits, a mob organization, greedy land developing SOB'S, who are taking down Hollywood Boulevard with whole new plans, set for the streets. We are reunited with some old characters and new ones, including a key witness, and glitter man, who aids Angel and her avenging team to hunt down these cruel people who like to play rough, not just on the streets You never get bored in this, and AA, is an unintentional slick pic in the Angel series, and the movie has pump and testosterone flowing through it, the legendary Calhoun proving he is a real saviour and cowboy in the finale, and I was glad, he stayed aboard for this one, as I was with Tyrell's foul mouthed Solly. Slick B grade camp, as bright as the lit up neon of the city streets. A lot of funny, with some roll eye moments too, doesn't hurt here.

Like I said about "fighting female" movies...
emm28 December 1998
As with THE SISTERHOOD, ALIENATOR, THE ASSAULT, LADY TERMINATOR, and this lame flick, they prove why you can never trust a box cover! If you really want to get into deadly, lethal passion without the useless nonsense, my suggestion is for you to grab a one-way ticket to China on board the TWA. There, you will find what you want. Remember, your very life depends on it!

Am I the only one trying to preach? Never mind! All of us don't even care!!!

A great cast
BandSAboutMovies1 April 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Betsy Russell stepped into the role of Molly "Angel" Stewart for the second movie in this series as the producers could not meet Donna Wilkes' salary demands. This would start the trend of a new Angel in each movie.

This time, our little girl has grown up and is in law school. She learns that Lieutenant Andrews (no longer played by Cliff Gorman, now it's Robert F. Lyons), the cop who got her off the streets, has been killed. Luckily, her old street family are all around and played by the same great performers as the original, with Steven M. Porter as Yo-Yo Charlie, Rory Calhoun as Kit Carson and Susan Tyrrell as Solly.

Only one person knows who killed Andrews and that's another street performer named Johnny Glitter (Barry Pearl, Grease). It turns out there's a scheme to buy up Hollywood Boulevard and Andrews got caught in the middle. Solly also has a baby that she found and that infant gets caught up in the craziness, nearly getting killed in a shootout and then almost thrown off a building. Avenging Angel has no qualms about being a neon-soaked nightmare world of street people with hearts of gold shooting, killing and playing Weekend at Bernie's with dead mobsters, much less babies being constantly in death's grasp.

There's also product placement - in an exploitation movie! - for Adidas.

Avenging Angel was written and directed by Robert Vincent O'Neil, who in addition to writing the first movie, also wrote Vice Squad, which is a thematically similar and perhaps better movie, as well as Wonder Women, Deadly Force and the third film in this series. He also directed the first film in this series and Blood Mania.

Hookers under cover.
mark.waltz21 March 2024
Warning: Spoilers
Molly's back, and law school's got her. And she has a new face. Betsy Russell has replaced Donna Wilkes so Angel is taller and more voluptuous, so we have to assume she had some kind of growth spurt. Back also are her Charlie Chaplin impersonator friend, the gun toting Rory Calhoun and tough as nails lesbian artist Susan Tyrell who seems to have inherited the gowns of the deceased drag queen friend who died tragically in the previous entry. Or maybe it's the Ann-Margret or Linda Evans lookalike female impersonators who provided her with those fancy black widow duds.

Sadly, Angel's cop friend is murdered early on in the film, a recast too for his brief time on screen. The film starts off great with a limousine going up and down the boulevard to the backdrop of Bronski Beat singing "Why?", showing off Hollywood Blvd. Style characters missed the first time, including a Boy George impersonator. Obviously there's some organized criminal activity going on behind the scenes, and Angel/Molly puts on her Daisy Duke's once again to see justice.

"Nobody dies on this floor unless they check in with me first" says the Hope Emerson like charge nurse who is called so Angel can get Calhoun out of his hospital room, and it's a very bouncy comedy scene played for slapstick, delightfully silly. This is campier than the first film, almost like a John Waters film set elsewhere, and Waters vet Tyrell fits right in. I wouldn't call this a good film by any means, but it's amusing. Veteran stage actor Ossie Davis adds some class as a police lieutenant.

Old Man Tries to Kill A Prostitute's Baby
LobotomousMonk28 April 2023
...grabby title, right? I wasn't sure what to expect with Avenging Angel, but I was pleasantly surprised. The drama was cartoonish, but like most cartoons it was a fun romp. The setting is the bright lights of the big city, Los Angeles, where an ambitious law student reviews her previous life as a street prostitute. She comes to the aid of her old friends when they are being attacked by two-bit mobsters. Betsy Russell is the titular character and has a dynamic, cutesy-poo presence on-screen. Support characters are sweet and the villains are overblown but effectively so. Exotic Karin Mani looks fantastic in her shower scene for a lead-up to one of the more dramatic and shocking moments in the film. Additionally, there is a ridiculous climax at the Bradbury Building involving a baby in peril. However, alls well that ends well.

I found this movie on Telegram, streaming free in HD which was lucky for me... and you. It seems that there is a scammer company seeking to copyright flag educational documentaries using footage from Avenging Angel. The company is DivoSports and their charlatan scam artist rep, Arvind C. (see Divo at LinkedIn). Divo is violating the fair use clause of the Copyright Act as well as claiming rights on media they don't own. YouTube is accepting the claims because their entire flagging system is automated and even when you appeal the flagging, nothing reaches a real person at YouTube for review. Is it an attempt at extortion. This is unclear at present but regular honest people have been putting in complaints about Divo since 2017 and to no avail.

What a sad state of affairs for the media industry. No wonder then that some will upload the entire video for free when this kind of thing happens. Where is YT on this??! You really shouldn't block the distribution of educational content, Divo. It seems the Telegram uploader has become vigilant in making that point, not only by having Avenging Angel available on dozens of social media apps, but also with the posting of image galleries of screenshots from the movie. It seems that there was an Angel out there seeking Vengeance. I LOVE poetic justice! Nice job whoever you are.

More fun than the first one
pmtelefon31 December 2021
My heart is a flutter. Betsy Russell is so wildly dreamy that she makes "Avenging Angel" a pretty good watch. The story is kind of silly but it is well told. There is a lot of humor in this movie. This movie manages the laughs very well with the action. This movie isn't as serious as the first one. The lighter touch works well with the material. That said, "Avenging Angel" is all about the forever dreamy Betsy Russell. I wish she played Angel in the first one. Honorable mention: the cop in the shower.

Angel takes on the mob
bkoganbing18 June 2015
Warning: Spoilers
Rory Calhoun, Susan Tyrell, and Steven M. Porter are back in the roles they played in the first Angel movie. Moving into the title role because it's now years since the teen was hooking on Hollywood Boulevard is Betsy Russell. After going through college and law school Russell is back on the street with a vengeance because her savior and mentor from the first film now played by Robert F. Lyons is killed in a shootout with some mobsters. Even though it has only been one calendar year since the first Angel film and no disclaimer about this being sometime in the near future.

Lyons was on to a scheme for the mob to buy with their usual tactics of persuasion for the owners huge parcels of real estate on Hollywood Boulevard. But the denizens there like their seedy street the way it is. Never mind that Russell and her posse are going to take matters into their own hands if the law doesn't do anything about a cop killing which I find hard to believe.

Angel was a delicious and campy bit of sleaze and this one follows in the tradition. I have to give big kudos to Rory Calhoun who looked like he was having a great old time burlesquing his own western hero image. A lot of Rooster Cogburn in Calhoun's portrayal, all he needed was the eye patch.

Avenging, sweet and fun trash.

Mon dieu, quel sequel!
suchenwi18 January 2009
Warning: Spoilers
I watched this briefly after the original Angel, and must say I liked it quite much, even a little better. The heroine played by a different actress is justifiable, as Molly must have grown a foot in height over four years, and the face/hair is sufficiently similar. Less social drama here (except for the girl sent to Houston), more thrills, and especially a big serving of comedy which sometimes is overdosed, but laugh-out fun at some instances. Consider various mishaps with firearms (Derringer or John Wayne's rifle) in the middle of shoot-outs. Or: the pet hearse is cool, but the sound effects associated with it are ridiculous.

One commenter associated this film with China (especially the sexy but tough heroine). I agree - but my strongest impression was that it felt like French. A kind of careless style (caring less for a plausible plot, I mean), while delighting the audience with bizarre twists and turns. And settings: The old high-rise with its caged elevators, the gigantic billboard in front of which Angel walks, initially small as an ant...

Don't get me wrong, I like most Hollywood styles as well as off-Hollywood, Chinese, French, what have you. I love a movie if it delivers memorable images and pleasant surprises, and this one often did. A good sequel, that creates some welcome continuity with its forerunner, yet steps well out of its shadow.

It proved its point!
GOWBTW17 May 2020
The first movie is a start for Molly/Angel to clean up her act. Though she straightened herself out over the years, she was tempted. Not to do tricks, but to avenge him. During a incident, the police lieutenant was gunned down in the line of duty. When Molly heard about the news, she reverted back to Angel to avenge her mentor. She brought back her former acquaintances, with a newcomer named Johnny Glitter. Solly, found a new place, and everyone took a part of avenging the police lieutenant. This movie is good. It's too bad that the original star had a conflict with the producers. It proved its point throughout the film. It's a major keeper. 4 out of 5 stars

Even lamer the second time around
Wizard-86 November 2002
At the beginning there is some promise to this sequel - there's a little zip, some decent exploitation, and it seems there will be more of an actual plot this time. Alas, as soon as Angel swears vengeance and hits the streets again, all the positive stuff generated up to that point is quickly flushed down the toilet. The production values barely meet that of a television drama of the time, there is more blatant and utterly unfunny comic relief (Calhoun really embarrasses himself), and the story moves at a snail's-pace, with only occasional (and dreary) "action" sequences. And once again, street-life is portrayed as being not all that bad, so much so that it too promotes boredom. Don't bother!
