The star Klaus Maria Brandauer was an actor interested in only stage plays until cast for his leading part in Mephisto (1981) by István Szabó. For this, Brandauer received the actors award in Cannes which opened door to international films. Together with the movies Colonel Redl (1985) and Hanussen (1988), all directed by Szabó, these three movies formed the 'German trilogy' of Brandauer. He also received a Golden Globe and Oscar® nomination for his role of Bror Blixen in Mephisto (1981).
