A red band teaser trailer for writer/director Macon Blair’s remake of the Troma cult classic The Toxic Avenger (watch it Here) was unveiled back in September – you can watch it at This Link – but we’re still waiting to hear of a release date for that one. In the meantime, Ahoy Comics has announced (via The Hollywood Reporter) that they are bringing the Toxic Avenger character back to the world of comic books for a five-issue mini-series they’re planning to get out into the world this fall! The first issue is expected to reach store shelves on October 9th.

With a remake on the way and a new 4K restoration of the original classic now streaming, it’s a good time to be a fan of Troma’s The Toxic Avenger. And on that particular note…
Bloody Disgusting has learned that Matt Bors — the founder of The Nib and a political cartoonist who has twice been named a Pulitzer Prize finalist —and acclaimed artist Fred Harper (Snelson) are collaborating on an all-new 5-issue comic book series, The Toxic Avenger, starring the satirical superhero of the Troma Films cult classic films.
“The Toxic Avenger delivers what Troma fans want,” said Ahoy Comics Editor-in-Chief Tom Peyer. “The series has violent action, gross mutations, bursting pustules, eye-popping visuals, and trenchant humor.”
“If there was ever a superhuman hero for these toxic, miserable times, Toxie is the one!” said Lloyd Kaufman. “Only Ahoy Comics and Bors & Harper could pull this off…er…mop this up!

The Toxic Avenger is returning to the world of comics.
Matt Bors, the Pulitzer Prize finalist who founded the daily online political comics publication The Nib, and artist and caricaturist Fred Harper, are collaborating on the what will be a five-issue comic book series.
The publisher behind the revival is Ahoy Comics, a Syracuse-based publisher dedicated to satirizing horror, space opera, social satire, sword & sorcery, and superhero stories. It is known for putting out Second Coming, a story of Jesus Christ and a Superman-like hero forced to become roommates. The company is eying a fall debut for the mini-series.
The comic takes its cues from the infamous 1984 low-budget cult classic movie made by Lloyd Kaufman and grade Z film production company Troma Entertainment. Over the course of its 50-year existence, Troma has helped launch the careers of filmmakers like Trey Parker & Matt Stone (South Park), James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy), and Eli Roth (Hostel), along with countless actors who went on to long careers, but their biggest export by any internal metric — financial success, brand recognition, franchisability, fan base — is 1984’s The Toxic Avenger.
The film is preceded by an “extreme violence” warning. The gore is indeed graphic — the first kill features a kid’s head being run over by a car, firmly establishing that no one is safe and nothing is off limits — but it could use about a dozen more trigger warnings by today’s standards. If you can be offended, you will be offended by the boundary-pushing content that includes (but is certainly not limited to) racism, homophobia, ableism, and sexual misconduct — yet there is substance behind the sleaze.

Macon Blair is one of the great "those guys" of modern cinema, with a presence so memorable that you can't help but sit up in your seat when he pops up in a film. Seasoned movie buffs may point to his work in films like "Murder Party," "Green Room," "Logan Lucky," and "The Florida Project." A billion dollars' worth of people saw him this summer in a key supporting role in "Oppenheimer." Offscreen, he won a fair amount of acclaim for his directorial debut, the Netflix release "I Don't Feel at Home in This World Anymore." But the Macon Blair who made that offbeat dramedy is also the same maniac who made "The Toxic Avenger," the surprisingly lavish remake of the infamous z-grade B-movie from 1984, which put Troma Entertainment, with its now-legendary history of disgusting schlock-by-design, on the map.

The Toxic Avenger shared the first footage of its titular vigilante — armed with a mission and a mop — from the horror-comedy film starring Peter Dinklage.
Macon Blair’s feature reimagines the original 1984 cult-favorite movie and premiered this month at the Fantastic Fest in Austin. The Legendary Entertainment project, which has not yet announced a release date, stars Dinklage as Winston Gooze, a janitor whose employer refuses to cover treatment for his terminal illness. After robbing the company, Winston falls into toxic waste and aims to right society’s wrongs as the Toxic Avenger.
In the footage, a news anchor announces, “A group of armed extremists, the Nasty Lads — they’ve taken hostages at a Miss Meat lunchatorium downtown.” This leads to the introduction of the Toxic Avenger, a superhero who takes matters into his own hands.

Kevin Bacon’s star-making role in 1984’s “Footloose” put him on a path that clashed with his original aspirations as a performer, the actor recently said on the “Podcrushed” podcast (via Insider). Bacon had no idea he was auditioning for a “dance movie” when he tested for the role of Ren McCormack.
“When I did the dance movie, I was not a dancer. I wasn’t trained as a dancer,” Bacon said. “If I’m being honest, I didn’t even really understand that it was a dance movie. I thought it was just a movie, and then, where they would indicate that there was dancing, I would just get up.”
Bacon continued, “They said something about a choreographer and I said, ‘You don’t really need a choreographer. I’ll just get up and dance. It’s not a big deal. Just play the record for me and I’ll jump around.

Writer/Director Macon Blair (I Don’t Feel At Home in This World Anymore) introduces a very different Toxie in his Troma remake, The Toxic Avenger. Here, it’s the downtrodden Winston Gooze (Peter Dinklage) who’s dunked into the toxic sludge that transforms him into a monstrous crusader against an evil corporation headed by greedy CEO Bob Garbinger (Kevin Bacon). Blair packs the contemporary update with reverent nods to the original but with a new approach that makes it accessible to those unfamiliar with the Troma classic.
Bloody Disgusting spoke with Macon Blair after The Toxic Avenger premiere at Fantastic Fest, where he shared what inspired his remake and the casting behind the new Toxie.
Like many, Blair connected with the 1984 film not just for its cartoonish violence but also for its relatable DIY filmmaking.

Writer/Director Macon Blair (I Don’t Feel At Home in This World Anymore) answers a very specific question for his sophomore directorial feature: what if Troma’s 1984 cult classic The Toxic Avenger was rebooted with a much bigger budget? Armed with a new Toxie and story, Blair’s version comes packed with reverent nods to the original and retains its specific zany style of gory splatstick comedy. However, its chaotic storytelling winds up overcomplicating matters.
Riffing off Tromaville, The Toxic Avenger sets its raucous tale in St. Roma Ville, where it introduces lowly janitor Winston Gooze (Peter Dinklage). Winston struggles to make ends meet after the death of his partner, leaving him alone to raise stepson Wade (Jacob Tremblay), and a health crisis prompts him to seek financial help from his company’s greedy CEO, Bob Garbinger (Kevin Bacon). But Winston’s desperation leads him to take drastic measures, and...

Lloyd Kaufman’s 1984 horror-comedy “The Toxic Avenger” is, in its own trashy way, a classic. Classic enough to spawn its own mini-franchise, at least, as well as prop up the fortunes of Kaufman’s company, Troma Entertainment, for multiple decades. And you don’t mess with the classics, which is why it’s just as well that writer-director Macon Blair throws it all out but the toxic waste in his new reboot.
Compared to Kaufman’s proud juvenilia, the point of view in this rebooted “Toxic Avenger” is downright mature. Peter Dinklage stars as Winston, a janitor at a sinister corporation called BT Healthstyle in the town of St. Roma’s Village and a single stepfather to sensitive preteen Wade (Jacob Tremblay). Wade’s mother died of cancer a few years earlier, and Winston dutifully cares for her son while getting little emotionally in return. He’s broke, meek, and lonely,...

Two years have passed since filming wrapped on writer/director Macon Blair’s remake of the Troma cult classic The Toxic Avenger (watch it Here). We still don’t know when the movie is going to receive a wide release, but it did just have its world premiere at Fantastic Fest, which is running in Austin, Texas from September 21st through the 28th, last night… and the reactions that have come out of the Fantastic Fest screening are very positive! Posts on social media have described the movie as funny, gory, insane, and heartwarming – and you can read some of them in the embeds below:
The Toxic Avenger: It’s as much Troma as you can fit into a “mainstream” Troma remake. Super gory, super off-color, and super silly throughout. You’re gonna love or hate this one, and you’ll know pretty damn fast! #FantasticFest pic.twitter.com...

Much like its protagonist — a ghastly superhero who gains his powers after falling into a vat of chemical waste — “The Toxic Avenger” refuses to die. Made for a paltry $500,000 in 1984, Troma’s cult classic spawned three direct sequels, a rock musical, two video games, a short-lived animated series and now a remake starring Peter Dinklage. Given the eco-friendly, anti-pollution message at the improbable franchise’s core, perhaps its reemergence shouldn’t be surprising. Those problems haven’t exactly been alleviated in the intervening decades, with rising sea levels and melting glaciers acting as a kind of real-world Bat Signal.
In some ways, remakes of this sort have more to live up to than updated versions of massively successful blockbusters do. The self-selecting audience of a cult classic like “Toxic Avenger” may not be large, but it is fiercely devoted. Actor-turned-filmmaker Macon Blair, who earned acclaim for his roles in “Blue Ruin...

What happens when you take the z-grade world of Troma — a filmmaking universe defined by utter anarchy, rejection of societal norms, and unashamed embracing of filth and degradation — and toss a lot more money, a handful of recognizable movie stars, and thoroughly modern sensibilities at it? Writer/director Macon Blair tries to answer that question with his remake of Troma's most famous creation, "The Toxic Avenger." And in doing so, it's clear Blair was making a movie for one person and one person only: himself. The Troma DNA is clear, but this is a movie made by someone who grew up watching crummy horror movies on VHS, swapping dick jokes with his buds while passing a joint, and probably memorizing entire episodes of "The Simpsons."
Blair just blew god knows how much of Legendary Entertainment's money on a feature-length collection of jokes and asides and quips and sight gags...

It was recently announced that the opening night of Fantastic Fest 2023 will have the world premiere of Legendary Pictures’ The Toxic Avenger. The new movie will be an action-packed reimagining of the classic Troma film from director Macon Blair that features an all-star cast including Peter Dinklage, who will pick up the infamous mop to become the toxic hero that no one knew they needed (or wanted) as well as Jacob Tremblay and Taylour Paige with Elijah Wood and Kevin Bacon.
The original “The Toxic Avenger” came out in the mid 8o’s and helped put Troma on the map as a top independent movie production company. “The Toxic Avenger” follows a horrible toxic accident that transforms downtrodden janitor Winston Gooze into a new evolution of hero: The Toxic Avenger! We hope that this take on “The Toxic Avenger” will help bring back more of that 80’s ooze to the mainstream.

The power of Lloyd Kaufman, Michael Herz, and Joe Ritter's "The Toxic Avenger" is truly remarkable if you really think about it. Troma Films' 1984 low-budget, superhero-splatter comedy launched a franchise that included an animated series, an off-Broadway rock musical, three film sequels, and now a remake from Macon Blair for Legendary Pictures. We know that production on the film wrapped sometime in 2021, the film is stacked with film fanatic favorites, and that "Game of Thrones" star Peter Dinklage would be picking up the mop as the new Toxie. But today, after the wild and wonderful weirdos at Fantastic Fest announced that "The Toxic Avenger" would be opening this year's festival, even more exciting news came to the surface regarding the film.
"Let's start with the headline grabbers," Fantastic Fest tweeted. Opening night: 'The Toxic Avenger.' Peter Dinklage wields the mop. Jacob Tremblay, Taylour Paige, Elijah Wood, and Kevin Bacon rule.

The above image teases a first look at the new Toxie, an appropriately named Winston Gooze, played by “Game of Thrones” star Peter Dinklage. While there’s no release date just yet, expect that to follow soon after its Fantastic Fest debut. Also check out teaser art below.
The 1984 original film revolved around nerdy janitor Melvin Ferd Junko III (Mitch Cohen) and his unwitting transformation into the toxic sludge hero; it’s clear that Blair won’t retell...
