Amusement , fun , and entertainment with the genie of the lamp who helps a teenager
ma-cortes22 October 2011
Entertaining and funny Italian film with the bouncing Spencer or Carlo Perdesoli as the magician Aladdin who this time travels to modern era emerging from a magic lamp . Updating of the old "Aladdin" Arabian Nights tale with a ¨genie of the lamp¨ and a teenager (Luca Venantini) in modern-day Miami who encounters a marvelous lantern and pops out a fantastic genie, who's been asleep for 200 years and in his gratitude grants the boy several wishes such as a Rolls Royce , invisibility and appearance . The adolescent lives with his mother (Janet Agreen) and a drunk grandpa and the genie help them . Meanwhile the teenager falls in love with a beautiful girl (Diamante Spencer , as trivia is Bud's daughter). There happens several adventures as the boy is abducted and the genie frees him . Fun comedy set on Miami , it's a vehicle for Bud Spencer enthusiasts , dealing with kidnappings , mobsters (Venantino Venantini, father of the starring Luca Venantini)and an obstinate policeman (Umberto Raho) . Aladdin takes on lots of greed men who are interested in his supernatural powers , facing off risks, and several adventures.

This is a sympathetic entertaining juvenile for Bud Spencer buffs , as he's delightful . It packs magic , action, fist-play , slapdash, humor with tongue-and-cheek and is quite amusing . This entertaining , engaging movie is crammed of fist-fights, punches , kicks, overwhelming stunt-work and lots of humor . Bud Spencer is top-notch as one army man taking on a group of bandits and as always he makes his own stunts with comic touches , as usual . This release has some cool and several hilarious moments , though the Terence Hill-Bud Spencer duo films are much better . The film isn't always good , sometimes is fresh and diverting and on a couple of memorable occasions ,it's frankly delicious. The movie displays innumerable laughters , jokes and slapstick . The highlights of the movie are the Basketball championship in which, thanks the magical powers, the boy bounds and leaps with the ball in ¨Flubber¨ film style ; furthermore the sea-ski competition and the likable drinking contest between the genie and the alcoholic grandpa . The picture is well starred by Bud Spencer . Bud , the popular Latin movie actor who starred in innumerable spaghetti Westerns and action-packed potboilers during the 1960s and '70s, was born Carlo Pedersoli (1929) in Naples. He was the first Italian to swim the 100 meter freestyle and competed as a swimmer at the Olympic games . He appeared as a member of the Praetorian Guard in his first movie, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer's epic "Quo Vadis" in 1951. He changed his screen name to "Bud Spencer" in 1967, as a homage to Spencer Tracy and to the American beer Budweiser. Spencer achieved his greatest hit in spaghetti Westerns lensed for a global audience. Teaming up with fellow Italian Terence Hill, the two made such international successes as I Quattro dell'Ave Maria (1968) and "They Call Me Trinity" , and ¨Trinity is still my name¨ . Their dual outings made both stars famous, particularly in Europe. In all, Spencer made 18 movies with Hill . Later on , he became a jet airplane and helicopter pilot after appearing in ¨Crazy plane¨ (1972) and owned an air transport company, Mistral Air, which he founded in 1984. However, he terminated his business interest in Mistral and entered the children's clothing industry. After 1983, Spencer's movie career slowed down, though he did have a big success in the early 1990s with the TV action-drama "Extralarge". A man of many talents, Bud wrote texts and plots for some of his films . He also has registered several royalties.

In the 70s and 80s Bud Spencer starred quite a few movies without Terence Hill , as he made three kind of films : 1ª he performed pictures with a little boy as partner as ¨Banana Joe ¨ , ¨Aladdin¨and ¨The Supersheriff¨ ; 2ª about cop named Flatfoot or Rizzo, also called Piedone, such as, ¨Flatfoot in Cairo , Flatfoot in Hong Kong, Flatfoot in Egypt , Flatfoot in Africa¨, furthermore the ¨Extralargo¨ series 3ª about diverse characters as a medieval knight as ¨Soldier of fortune¨ , a swindler as ¨Mr Charleston¨ or a fisherman , ex-player as ¨Bulldozer .

The picture packs commercial musical score by Frizzi in similar style to the usuals Guido and Maurizio De Angelis , including catching songs fitting perfectly in the mood of the movie . Passable cinematography by Silvio Ippoliti , though is necessary a perfect remastering . The story is middling written by by Marcello Fondato, following the Hill-Spencer ordinary trademarks , he wrote several Spencer vehicles as ¨Bulldozer¨, ¨Aladino¨, ¨The Supersheriff¨, and ¨The sheriff and the extraterrestrial little boy¨ and directed him in ¨Mister Charleston¨. The motion picture is regularly directed by Bruno Corbucci, Sergio Corbucci's brother. Bruno wrote and directed various Hill-Spencer films as ¨Banana Joe¨ , ¨Miami Supercops¨ , ¨Par-Impar¨ , ¨Cat and Dog¨ and ¨Aladdin¨ . If you love the Spencer's other movies, go for it, and if you've never seen one this is an acceptable start ; but only for Bud fans .This is an average entertaining juvenile that will appeal to Italian comedy buffs .

Typical of its type
Leofwine_draca6 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
A typical Italian comedy, shot in Florida like so many of the other Spencer/Hill movies by Bruno Corbucci, no less. This one loosely reinvents the Arabian story with Spencer as a larger-than-life genie who grants many wishes and at the same time ends up fighting with the usual gangster goons. Some of the material smacks of padding - the waterski competition for example - but elsewhere Spencer's droll delivery and the cheesy-but-fun FX work in this film's favour.

Stupid and funny
ottosz22 July 2004
I saw this yesterday on TV. It's not your usual "Alladdin", but more of a Bud Spencer (sans Terence Hill) flick really. It plays like a B movie, with some awkward acting, specially from the villains. There's even some really politically incorrect stuff for the kids.

Bud is as cool as ever, the boy is okay, and that drunk grandpa manages to be annoying and funny at the same time. I had fun watching this, but then again I really like Bud and Terence stuff.

You can expect a lot of staged fights, clumsy acting, weird stuff going on and lots of continuity/logic errors. But who cares?

I give this a 7 out of 10 on a good day.

I Wish This Movie Would Stop Now!
tesswysko20 February 2019
I don't get how this movie has such a high rating... it's AWFUL! The film quality is HORRIFIC, the cinematography is ABYSMAL, the plot is RIDICULOUS, and the ACTING? Ugh... There are no words... By the time I was maybe 10 minutes in, they'd already broken almost EVERY Djin rule out there! You get 3 wishes - broken - etc... This movie also included swearing, which for a "family movie" which is what I assume this is, Aladdin movies usually are, I don't think is very appropriate! I recommend avoiding!

Corny, episodic but likable.
gridoon13 October 2004
There is only one way to get through this "Aladdin": you must have a high tolerance for corniness. One minute the Genie says that he doesn't know what these "boxes" (meaning the cars) are, the next he delivers exactly the kind of car that the kid (his "master") wants. There isn't really a story, it's just a series of unrelated episodes. And the "culture shock" factor (the Genie wakes up 200 years after his time) goes almost completely unexplored. But the movie has an essential good-heartedness that makes it likable. It's also nice to hear Bud Spencer's original voice for a change, Italian accent and all. (**1/2)

The best version of Aladdin out there.
pkzeewiz24 May 2010
Warning: Spoilers
This movie has a boy named Al getting a hold of a lamp and then meeting the genie who had been asleep for years and years. The boy finds he can have all of the wishes he wants and he takes advantage of them. He gets fancy cars that fly, he gets the girl of his dream and he eventually gets his buddy the genie to stop all of the bad crimes going on in the town and to hang around a while and be a friend and not just a genie.

This movie was such a beautiful 95 minutes of 80's Italian cheese. I loved it better than any of the 6 or 7 Aladdin movies I had ever seen. It is corny, but it was aimed at kids and it was from 1986 so cut it some slack. It has good messages and great acting, great writing and good direction. It is funny, has some good fist fights with the great Bud Spencer and is a fun film.

Bruno Corbucci did good directing and other than the green screen shots it was very fun. Dardano Sacchetti is my all time favorite writer and he wrote the story here along with his sometime collaborator Elisa Briganti. The two of them have did some of Italy's best horror and action films of the 70's and 80's so this was something new and different for them. Acting wise Bud Spencer was perfect, I think he is one of the best actors ever and he did such a great job in this kids film. Luca Venantini was perfect as Al too, this kid didn't do a ton of movies but hes a great actor and I wish he had done more films.

Great film and a must see for Spencer fans and anyone wanting to see Aladdin but not wanting to watch Disney junk with the annoying Robin Williams should see this one. 5/10 stars

Fun for the entire family! NO WAY!!!
emm12 October 1998
But, if you look at this film the other way around, the 1986 "update" is interestingly strange and hilarious enough to deserve a good viewing. Although parents may get peeved over its occasionally crude content to show to their children, I reckon they'll still giggle over it anyway! Who cares if it isn't Disney? Of the thousands of Aladdins in the world today, this one is the most unusual version around.

Fairly generic Bud Spencer movie...
paul_haakonsen25 January 2022
I had actually never heard about this 1986 movie as I stumbled upon it in 2022 by random chance. But seeing that it was a Bud Spencer movie, of course I had to sit down and watch it, no doubt about it.

Writers Dardano Sacchetti, Elisa Briganti, Mario Amendola, Bruno Corbucci and Marcello Fondato manged to put together an enjoyable enough movie. This wasn't exactly an outstanding movie experience, but it was watchable. The storyline was pretty straight forward, although a bit too simplistic in its entirety. But I am sure that fans of Bud Spencer is bound to enjoy this 1986 comedy adventure more than I did.

The acting performances in "Superfantagenio" (aka "Aladdin") were as you'd expect from a Bud Spencer movie. So if you enjoy his movies, than you will find yourself in for a good time. I will say that the acting performances in "Superfantagenio" were definitely good enough for my liking.

Ultimately then director Bruno Corbucci's 1986 movie was watchable, but not an outstanding or memorable movie experience. So I hadn't exactly been missing out on a cinematic gem here. It was, for me at least, a very generic Bud Spencer movie.

My rating of "Superfantagenio" lands on a five out of ten stars.

A djinn in the USA
stefanozucchelli14 November 2021
Very light comedy with Bud Spencer in the role of a djinn just out of the lamp. Plot not at all original but nice enough to be acceptable.

This is not a memorable movie; I'm sure it was a home video made solely for viewing without thinking about the quality of the product.

Most unusual take on the famous story, but I enjoyed it a lot
Horst_In_Translation26 January 2021
Warning: Spoilers
"Superfantagenio" or "Aladdin" (sometimes also with one d only) is an Italian movie from 1986, so this one has its 35th anniversary this year in 2021 and this makes it slightly older than myself. If you take a look at the poster, you will see that this is of course a Bud Spencer movie and this makes it a bit surprising that the language here is English because otherwise Spencer (Pedersoli) appeared in Italian-language films almost always. But then again, I read that he was dubbed nonetheless in many of his works, even in the Italian original, so it is nothing too serious. More on Spencer later on, let's focus on the basics now: This one runs for under 1.5 hours, but still stay comfortably under the 100-minute mark, so it is not a partoicularly long or short film. The director is Bruno Corbucci, a truly prolific Italian filmmaker for sure and if you take a look at his body of work, you will see that even with the many films he directed, he wrote almost three times as much. So no surprise at all that he was part of the writing team here as well, especially because there is a massive amount of five writers and they did not even include any unconnected with this film, but connected with the actual Aladdin tale. As for Corbucci, this is definitely from the later stages of his career already. Not from the end really, but he was already as experienced as it gets by then and he is not Steno or anything. There are works without Spencer that he made that may be more known than the stuff he did with Spencer. This applies for example to a western with Trintignant and Kinski from many years earlier.

If we take a look at the cast list, you will find a mix between Italian actors and American actors judging from the name. One of the former is Carlo Corbucci. I am not sure how he is related to the writer and director, but I am sure he is. The name is not that frequent honestly. Perhaps his brother. Don't to do any research now. I cannot really elaborate on the cast here too much, especially when it comes to supporting players. But Italian film buffs will definitely recognize some of the names if they care about older films (okay, this one is not super old) as many of them have enjoyed pretty prolific careers over the years. The character of Al Haddin (what a name, I agree with the title character saying one occasion it is a funny name) is played by Luca Venantini. He was 15 or so when this was made and is still acting nowadays at the age of 50, even if he has never been utterly prolific. Appeared mostly in short films lately. But the key player here is of course Bud Spencer once more. This film is from past his collaborations with Terence Hill, but here he shows that Hill is always a welcome addition, but not entirely necessary to come up with a super entertaining movie. I enjoyed this one definitely more than I thought and it is very much on the underseen side and the rating here on imdb is also too low. Spencer was already closer to 60 than to 50 at that point (even if not by much) and you can see in his face that he is not a spring chicken anymore, but hey, his character was centuries old, so it's all good. Also an interesting inclusion here is Diamy Spencer, his daughter, who was the same age like the (young) male protagonist. As for the rest of the cast, I really cannot comment any further. It seems that for the really minor characters they picked American actors only almost. Makes sense because this is where the film is set.

I shall just mention a few scenes and inclusions that make me like this movie. I think the visual effects here were truly retro and they did not spectacular one bit, but simple in a funny manner. Just take the flying car early on. Or how humans turn into animals. The the ape on one occasion or earlier it was pigs I think. Or also when Aladdin almost falls from the carpet near the end as they were going to the Bermuda Triangle. Of course, they could not sink the lamp elsewhere. But the moment when he agrees to turn Spencer's character into a human was fairly sweet. And before that, when they turn the helicopters into balloons, was pretty funny. Also with how they again show us that the boy is a good person and does not want them to crash, even if there's the bad guys inside. Oh, I did not really elaborate on in detail, but this film is of course about Aladdin and uses several examples that you will also find in the famous animated movie that came out a few years later. Of course, it is set in the now, in the year 1987 as we find out on one occasion even verbally. So no Princess Jasmin realy, no sultan who is her dad and Spencer's character who plays the djin is also only a few centuries old. Actually, after spending 200 years in the lamp, this was a much longer period than he existed before that because his actual age (or when he was born) is stated on one other occasion.

As a consequence, he knows nothing about modern times and technologies. We see that when he is in a police car and the other cop goes crazy because he knows nothing about traffic signs or telephones. The moment Spencer's character here was asked to ask for help and what he did / how he did it was absolutely hilarious. Again, brilliant voice acting and Spencer's voice here in Germany is one key reason why he is that famous and has been this famous for a really long times. The djin's cluelessness when it comes to modern aspects and gadgets here was a bit of a running gag and it worked well throughout the movie. But of course he does not need to be a technology expert or anything to make things work. I also liked some of the slightly more serious moments like with how Aladdin wants to beat up a few bullies, but initially he does not use the right words to get strong enough. So there is some smart writing too it. But as it is a Bud Spencer film, of course there is also a great deal of funny fighting as usual. But they also went for some other comedy and I was really surprised that it worked well and I enjoyed it a lot. Take the guy I mentioned earlier whho is turned into an ape and when he is turned back, he is there on all fours on the operation table. This was funny, even funnier than the obnoxious doctor's wife immediately after, even if she was not bad at all either. The scenes in which Spencer's character once again helps weaker guys who are harrassed by thugs are something you see so many times in Spencer movies. I thought it was funny how they kept calling him a "fat animal" (difficult to translate and make it sound as funny as it was in German) before he beat them up. And it's also not unusual to see Spencer step up for women in here and I don't mean the Black woman who gets his attention in another comedic moment when he was supposed to focus on his young master. One woman he would definitely step up for, however, is the big brutal orphanage woman. What was up with that? So bizarre, like when she says that if there is one more noise, then she will unleash the dogs at the children haha. Rough.

Here and there, the movie reminded me slightly of "Karate Kid" which was of course really famous during that time. Spencer's djin was a bit of a mentor to the boy, even if there are of course crucial differences too. But it had a touch of this film and it was probably not a coincidence. There was really not a lot that I did not like here. The film did not include any bland subplots without Spencer's character and that's how it should be. The more screen time he has, the better. he is just such a likable guy and his timid reaction near the end when he finds out that the boy will make sure he will not spend centuries on the floor of the ocean was actually really cute. Spencer can act, there is no doubt about it. Anyway, if I have to dig really deep here, then maybe I would give a thumbs-down to the basketball sequence because that was really too exaggerated, also with how big the gap was and how he would score the game winner in the end. Or I wondered why the djin all of a sudden turned up as a police officer when actually he got turned invisible before that. But I dont want to look for the weaker moments. This film is definitely very easy to enjoy and it may be in my top5 even from Spencer and as I love the man and many of his works, I really did not expect to like this one this much. Also it is not unusual at all that he shares the screen with a young friend. He has African and Asian kids in other films, aliens at times even and the one he has here is a little older than those I just mentioned in other works, but it worked at least as good. There is still a lot more I could say about this film, but I shall leave it at that for now. Thanks for reading alll this though and if you haven't, then you should absolutely see this movie, also a nice way to enter into the Spencer universe if you have seen nothing else so far. Or a nice double feature to watch with the 1992 Aladdin. Definitely better than the 2019 version. This 1986 film also has really nice closure with the piano scene. So no hesitation at all for me in giving the overall outcome an enthusiastic thumbs-up. The longer it went, the better it became. Highly recommended and this is my new favorite film from 1986, even if admittedly there is still a lot for me to see from that year.

Aladdin
BandSAboutMovies16 March 2022
Warning: Spoilers
Sergio Corbucci may have made some of the most violent Westerns of all time, but his brother Bruno made comedies like the Nico Giraldi series with Tomas Milan - starting with The Cop in Blue Jeans - and Miami Supercops with Bud Spencer and Terence Hill.

This take on Aladdin stars Luca Venantini as Al Haddin and if that makes you laugh, well, this is for you. It kind of makes me wistful that Janet Ågren (Eaten Alive!, City of the Living Dead) plays his mother. That said, he lives in poverty with her and his grandfather before finding a lamp in the antique shop he works in. He rubs it, Bud Spencer appears as the genie and we have a movie.

The wishes that Al gets help him win over the love of his young life, Patricia O'Connor (Bud's daughter Diamy) and help her cop father when the genie just busts into a building, shrugs off point blank bullets and brings in the mob guys that he's been trying to arrest. Of course, Al's mother works in a mob nightclub, so she gets kidnapped and her son has to save the day.

The end of this movie makes a sharp pivot, the kind that makes sense when you realize that it is both Italian and a Cannon movie. The genie is nearly dissected because people think he's an alien and the police chief - of what I assume is Miami - demands that one of the wishes to be taking out all the military power of the world so his police force can rule the world. This sounds nightmarish and Al and the genie wisely jump on a magic carpet and go throw the lamp in the Bermuda Triangle. I have no idea where any of this came from.

Spencer did TV after this, not appearing in another movie until 1991's Un piede in paradiso AKA Speak of the Devil. Directed by Enzo Barboni and written by Enzo and Bud's sons Marco Barboni and Giuseppe Pedersoli, it was also shot in Miami and has Carol Alt in its cast.

G-rated acid trip?
dasrik7 December 1998
Is this the Ziploc Bag guy playing the Genie? Anyway, this whole movie is like an LSD trip where bizarre stuff just happens to this really geeky kid, and he has this fat genie to help him out. All this, of course, amid truly horrible acting, special effects and dialogue. It's so bad, though, it's funny. So buy it if you see it at a bargain basement bin. It'll only set you back a buck anyway.
