All hail Film Ventures International. Long-time purveyors of cinematic sleaze and genre enchantment, they’ve produced or at least distributed some of my very favorite low budget wonders: Beyond the Door (1974), Grizzly (’76), The Incubus (1981), and Pieces (’82) are only some of their titles that have provided hours of entertainment, from the goofy to the sublime (which in their case, is often one and the same). One of their final releases, The Power (1984), is a good example of their often heady mix, and a solid springboard for directors Stephen Carpenter and Jeffrey Obrow on their way to their demented mutant mash The Kindred (’87).
Released in late January, The Power (Aka Evil Passage) didn’t do much business; playing in theatres for one weekend and bringing in just under a million dollars, head honcho Edward L. Montoro surely heading out the back door with a bagful of cash on his way to bankrupting the company.

Craig Fairbrass ('Dead Cert'), Jason Maza ('Demons Never Die'), Craig Conway ('Devil's Playground') and Sean Pertwee ('Dog Soldiers') are the fresh faced foursome to new British zombie horror 'Tower of the Dead'. The quartet, who these days between them seem to be placed in every mediocre British horror offering or gangster based project there is going, will be bought together to play members of an Armed Response Team and/or a group of arms dealers who find theirselves teaming up when some begrudged zombie fellas take over a tower block. Sound familiar, then you're likely thinking this sounds very much like 2009's French horror feature 'The Horde'! Brit director Ross Boyask ('Left for Dead') will helm from a script he co-wrote with Paul Reynolds....

One of YouTube's largest distributors is joining the search for the next crop of great filmmakers. Break Media, after attracting one million subs on its main YouTube channel, has launched the Prototype competition, where one filmmaker will win a feature film distribution deal. According to a trailer released on the action-oriented Hardcoded channel, Break is using Prototype to search for "action, sci-fi or effects-driven short films," which seems right in line with Hardcoded's first web series, Armed Response. Eight chosen filmmakers will win $20,000 and a short film distribution deal across Break's various platforms, while one grand prize winner will obtain a feature film development deal with New Regency Productions, best known as the studio behind Fight Club. “Prototype is a way to discover and cultivate talent by providing them with the financing, distribution, and access to the entertainment industry that they wouldn’t otherwise have,” said Greg Siegel, Svp Entertainment Development,...

The last two years of watching The Closer have all come down to "Armed Response."
Were you satisfied with the conclusion of one of the biggest story arcs ever to grace the major crimes department? While I didn't want it to be Ann because it seemed too easy for it all to fall onto an unknown after so many months of speculation, the way it went down felt pretty darn satisfying.
Without a doubt we witnessed some of the best acting yet both Kyra Sedgwick and Corey Reynolds. It was a fitting final exploration of the friendship they forged years ago when she first stepped into Los Angeles. At the beginning, Brenda counted on Gabriel for nearly everything, and as time went on he learned to lean on her, as well. When she made the decision to dismiss his thoughts about leaving Terrell Baylor at a place they both knew would end in certain doom,...

Who is The Closer's mole? What lies ahead on this TNT drama's series finale? Why isn't Corey Reynolds headed to Major Crimes and what does his future hold outside of this franchise?
I recently got off the phone with the actor and picked his brain for these answers and many more...

What’s going on with Gabriel?
Gabriel is making some changes, and they were revealed on Monday. Have you seen "Armed Response" yet? We got a big clue as to what that life change was during "Drug Fiend."
Was the introduction of Ann a reason for why we won’t be seeing Gabriel make the move to Major Crimes or what that a personal decision?
That’s more of a decision on my behalf. The way the show has been structured for seven years was going to be structured dramatically different, you know, as not having Kyra there.

Big congrats to the St. Louis-based filmmakers over at Crunchy Cool Films. They’ve scored a major casting coup by securing three A-list horror villains for their upcoming shocker The Bloodfest Club which starts filming in our town soon. Horror vets Bill Moseley, Michael Berryman, and William Forsythe have all signed on for roles in the film!
Bloodfest Club will be the second film from the writing team of Oscar Madrid and Jim Ousley. Their first, Hooch & Daddy-O (2005), was an award-winning mock documentary (available on Netflix). about a fictional 80′s cop show. Bloodfest Club will mark the directorial debut of Madrid and stars writer Ousley as Sonny Kane, a slow-witted, Chuck Norris-obsessed janitor at a High School that takes on a bloodthirsty alien roaming the hallways killing students.
Moseley will star as Dr. Colin Dante, the sinister history professor in search of lost artifacts on campus. Berryman will play Sensei Noddy Donigan,...
