Rare chance to see Arielle Dombasle in English speaking role .....
merklekranz1 February 2011
Arielle Dombasle's nude scenes are definitely the highlight of this lightweight comedy. Christoper Plummer plays the naive boss, while his wife, Dombasle, makes a hobby out of seducing her husband's employees. The cast is fine, Daniel Stern is a married man with fertility problems, Martin Mull is memorable in his role of "professional ass kisser", and Lou Jacobi is also nice to see. It is the simplistic script that is lacking. One memorable scene is Plummer having his lunch and condiments delivered by one of his model trains. but overall things drag. Somehow this comedy combining abstinence and infidelity should have worked better than it does. ... - MERK

I don't think I like him
SnoopyStyle16 December 2023
Joel Keefer (Daniel Stern) and Janet Keefer (Melanie Mayron) are a married couple having trouble conceiving. He's a busy low level stockbroker. Louise Roalvang (Arielle Dombasle) is the wife of the boss Mr. Roalvang (Christopher Plummer) who loves image above skills. Tony Dugdale (Martin Mull) is the top analyst despite his incompetence due to Roalvang loving his hair. Joel takes on Tony which gets heated when a department head job opens up. They are going to a resort to battle it out. Carlos Delgado (Fisher Stevens) is an outrageous experimental artist.

This comedy starts fine. I like the couple initially but he starts to annoy me over time. I generally like Daniel Stern, but he is too bumbling and he's a big jerk to Janet in one scene. If he's being idiotic, there's less reason to pick him for the job. He is still much better than the annoying Fisher Stevens. This comedy rises and falls on Joel's likeability. I don't think I like him. He needs to be much nicer to Janet.

The Boss' Wife offers enough unique elements to make it a must-see for fans of 80s comedies
kevin_robbins27 November 2023
I recently watched The Boss' Wife (1986) on Tubi. The storyline follows an aspiring man trying to climb the ranks within his organization. His successful business pitch sets him on the right track, but the boss's right-hand man, viewing him as competition, does everything possible to thwart his progress. Complicating matters further is the boss's wife, who is eager to commit adultery.

Directed by Ziggy Steinberg in his only directorial project, the film stars Daniel Stern (Home Alone), Arielle Dombasle (Tess), Christopher Plummer (The Insider), Fisher Stevens (Short Circuit), and Melanie Mayron (Clockstopper).

This movie is a delightful addition to the comedy genre. The storyline is entertaining and well setup with the outstanding opening cigarette room sequence and initial boardroom presentation. The cast is well-chosen, and each actor fits their character perfectly. Arielle Dombasle's is gorgeous. The comedic content may have its hits and misses, it is unpredictable and worthwhile. The storyline is a rollercoaster, and the ending is absolutely wild.

In conclusion, The Boss' Wife offers enough unique elements to make it a must-see for fans of 80s comedies. I would rate this a 6/10 and recommend watching it once.

This hilarious movie should be released on dvd!!!
DAVID_SOUL28 March 2004
It's been a while since i have seen this movie, but i loved it & i personally think it's hilarious!!! Daniel Stern, Christopher Plummer, Fisher Stevens & Ariele Dombasle all turn in great performances!!!

The scenes which i remember the most are, the one where Fisher Stevens who plays an enthusiastic Photographer is giving Miss Dombasle a massage outside the window while Daniel Stern is sitting on Christopher Plummer's couch ( His Boss ) nervously eating crisps & Mr Plummer has his back to the window, so he doesn't know what is going on lol!!! That was hilarious!!! The scene at the dinner table which involved what i think was either a piece of butter or soft cheese & Miss Dombasle puts it down her bra & replaces it on the table, right in front of everyone, her husband ( The Boss ) is way too busy talking to notice this, at this point Plummer says something about making quite an impression lol!!! She also has her foot under tha table between Sterns legs in this scene!!! It's classic stuff!!!

Fisher Stevens also has a Dog called TIGHT ASS LOL!!! Miss Dombasle also disrobes a lot in this movie as she is trying to seduce Sterns character, she is certainly a sight for sore eyes!!!

I just hope it gets a dvd release soon, i believe it was released by Fox on video so it should do at some point!!! This movie is seriously underated & i'm pretty sure not many people have even heard of it or seen it, it's a pity!!!

I mean look how many reviews there are on here for it, hardly any!!! It deserved more attention that what it got!!!

very, very lame
tomlindh21 March 2001
If you like occasional nudity with junior high school level slap stick comedy, then look no further.

Starting at about the halfway point, the beautiful and erotic Arielle Dombasle starts disrobing at every opportunity. That is the only thing that made this movie worth watching.

The story is both lame and preposterous, the humor is corny, and character development is basically non-existent.

Addendum
wiluxe-223 February 2002
Like any other good farce, the characters in this film represent extremes: the boss (Plummer) is REALLY eccentric and REALLY blind to his wife's behavior; his wife (Dombasle) is RELENTLESSLY seductive and sexual; the photographer (Delgado) sees the EXTREME anger he deliberately arouses in people as affirmation of his art; Daniel Stern is climbing the walls to have sex with his wife (Mayron), but can't, since they have to wait until she's at her most fertile (making the advances on him by Dombasle that much funnier, since he has no choice but to resist her constantly); Martin Mull is the CONSUMMATE yes-man, clawing his way up the corporate ladder. Character development? Who needs it? THE BOSS' WIFE isn't trying to be CITIZEN KANE; it's just a very funny movie. And it's NOT slapstick, despite what others might tell you.

Decent, Shamefully Overlooked Comedy
wiluxe-221 February 2002
THE BOSS' WIFE has been a favorite of mine for years. Sure, it's preposterous, but this is screwball comedy; and the premise may not be the most original, but the actors do a great job. Christopher Plummer is great; Arielle Dombasle is drop-dead beautiful and perfectly cast as his dangerously flirtatious wife. Fisher Stevens as Carlos Delgado, the conceptual artist and photographer--whose work centers around p***ing off complete strangers, then photographing them while they're in a rage--is a perfect foil for Daniel Stern, who can't seem to be rid of him. Yeah, seeing Arielle Dombasle nude appeals to my baser side; but I'd rather see her nekkid than anyone else in show biz today. Martin Mull as a professional ass-licker is at his best in this film. A pleasure, despite what others might tell you--rent it!

Wonderful light comedy
Camargue16 November 2005
This movie is one of my all time favorite light comedy offerings. Christopher Plummer is a master as the neurotic Mr. Roalvang who simply cannot bear to be challenged. He is able to cause his wimpy employee, Daniel Stern, to succumb to his demands by confronting him with a question: "Are you challenging me, Smokey?" Another absolute comic genius is Martin Mull, who becomes more obnoxious the harder he tries to be the favored employee, Tony Dugdale. But none of these three men can deal with the problems caused by the overly, overtly, demandingly erotic Mrs. Roalvang (Arielle Dombasle).

Much of the action takes place on a train, or there are references to trains. Mr. Roalvang even has his lunch delivered on an electric toy train. There is a great scene when Mrs. Roalvang does her bombastic walk through the train station.

The writing is terrific. The actors are great. I have to watch it at least once a year for a laugh fix. I rank it with "Long, Long, Trailer" or "Mr. Blanding's Builds His Dream House."

The 1980s Comedy
grumpy736-124 March 2012
I don't think the published reviewer watched any of it after the opening titles -- because Daniel Stern is resisting, running away, and trying to avoid the attentions of the Boss' Wife.

Perhaps I was just in a good mood for a farce with mistaken identities and quick exits and entrances. Plummer was just sooooo excellent as a slimy investment top gun. Martin Mull was soooooo creepy as the rival to Daniel stern -- both candidates for promotion. And Fisher Stevens as the photographer-masseur is terrific as Carlos Delgado, the source of irritation and distraction and deception. Maybe his best role ever for this fine character actor. Both ladies were easy on the eyes and seductive.

The writer and director used fine material to make an entertaining 83 minutes from start to finish IMVHO.

Weak comedy
soranno4 November 2002
One of the biggest wastes of time in the world of 1980's comedies. Daniel Stern has the rather thankless role of a stockbroker who decides that something is missing in his life. He works to solve that problem by having a love affair with his boss' wife. The only thing missing here is a good script.

Goes like trains
RavenGlamDVDCollector13 April 2014
Okay tell me what's wrong with this one, why aren't you releasing this on DVD? Think it won't sell? Let me tell you that this movie has a lot of fans who fondly remember its outrageous humor. Who can forget Arielle Dombasle as the title character, even after all these years? I saw it on a Friday night at a drive-in theater during the late Eighties, and pedaled out on a bicycle, about 10km out of town the Saturday night just to see Ms. Dombasle again. Ah gee, guys, if you haven't seen this, you don't know what you're missing! The fun just doesn't stop. That Carlos guy has my vote for one of the most hilarious people on film ever, and Christopher Plummer is excellently cast. Martin Mull in his best performance! Twenty- eight years later, and no sign of this movie on the Internet, just a promo or two, much-appreciated, but not even the original trailer? Come on, release it, it's great!
