- This is a darker, more mature themed version than the usual Nutcracker presentations. The story is a romance between Clara and the Nutcracker Prince, peppered with some jealousy by Herr Drossolmeier. However there is no nudity or physical interaction other than standard ballet dancing.
- There is no sex or nudity but Clara is notably uneasy and seems to be "creeped out" by her godfather Drosselmeyer, who has a smile which uncomfortably resembles a leer, and Clara behaves as if she were afraid he might try to make a pass at her. At times he appears jealous of her relationship with the Prince.
- In Clara's dream, Drosselmeyer appears as a Pasha, a keeper of a harem, brandishing a whip to introduce the "Russian Dance", "Chinese Dance", "Arabian Dance", and so on. The Arabian Dance is performed by a peacock, a half-woman, half-bird that is brought to the harem in a cage.
- A love triangle rivalry appears to exist between the Drosselmeyer and the Nutcracker Prince, as Drosselmeyer tries to get Clara to sit with him, but the Prince refuses to allow it.

- The battle with the mice is no more violent than usual, but it is more frightening. The mouse king is gross and scary and there are some explosions.

- This movie would have earned a PG rating if it was released theatrically today because of scary images and action, despite its currently stated G rating.
- In a prologue near the beginning of the film, Clara dreams that she has been turned into a grotesque, mouse-like creature.
- During the Christmas party, Fritz, Clara's brother, is given a puppet that looks like the mouse that terrified Clara in her dream. Clara is visibly uncomfortable with this.

Frightening & Intense Scenes
- The end is fairly intense. Clara, floating peacefully in the air, suddenly hurtles downward falling. Before she hits the ground, she awakens abruptly from her dream with a very uneasy look on her face.
