Bert Convy, director

Warning: Spoilers
Bert Convy directed one movie. This is it.

The rest of the world doesn't remember it. I'd like to celebrate it for you, as it's a monument to the late night cable stupidity that I spend a good chunk of my teen years on. Who am I lying to? I've spent a good portion of my life watching movies like this.

When TV Guide reviewed this movie, they said, "Honestly, there isn't one moment in this alleged comedy that anyone over the age of seven would find even remotely funny."

When I reviewed this movie, I stood on my couch and screamed, "I love Vic Tayback!" like some kind of imbecile.

Also known as Hollywood Air Force, this film is all about the adventures of Hollywood actors, stuntmen and writers who have been drafted into military service during the Cuban Missile Crisis.

After getting in trouble, they must pass an inspection or be sent to actual military service. Led by Vince Tucker (Chris Lemmon), they use movie magic to appear that they look like they know what they're doing.

In addition to the beloved Tayback, Lloyd Bridges, Matt McCoy (Sgt. Nick Lassard, of course), Tom Villard from We Got It Made and Deep Roy - yes, Fellini from Flash Gordon - all appear.

If you're the kind of TV junkie who would get excited when E.Z. Taylor from the Three's Company spin-off Three's A Crowd shows up, much less also know that he was Kevin in The Final Terror, then this is a movie that you should come over to watch with me after this pandemic ends. Or maybe we'll just watch it over the internet.

Call me biased

I had a couple of scenes in this movie as an extra. I played a photographer in the awards ceremony scene and was one of the airmen chasing after the jeep. It was a great time and Vic Tayback and Lloyd Bridges we really friendly and open. Chris Lemon, not so much. The story wasn't fantastic but Burt Convey kept to a simple premise. Just have fun with it!" IN the end, we did and I think the vibe came across in the final product. The movie is just plain old fun. If you're looking for a good "Popcorn" flick and you don't care if it's "Higher Art", well, then this movie will fit the bill. I am proud to say I had a part in it and the experience was a blast!

Laugh your prop off

I saw this while in a Taiwan hotel and had to phone down to the desk for the name.

This is pretty much a typical comedy romp through the Air Force Reserves, similar to Police Academy, and it is funny. A great party movie, this film has a lot of great gags.

It's not the greatest film ever to be produced, but it's simple and fun.

Silly fun.

It's a shame that it's so hard to get a copy of this movie anywhere. I saw this movie back in the 80's on VHS and loved it. It was a video antidepressant of sorts. It's of humor and gags a teenager would enjoy, or in my case, someone who has an overgrown inner child. By no means is this a masterpiece or a benchmark for any Hollywood movie. This is a low budget, simple, funny, popcorn, leave brain at door, B movie. The cinematography is amateurish, and the writing unpolished, yet charming. I've wanted to re-watch it for ages and see if it holds up and what I'd think of it today. The cast is fabulous and you can tell everyone was there more for fun than just a paycheck. I came upon a low resolution copy of it online after looking for it on every streaming service, to no avail. I watched it 40 years later, and yes, still holds up.

A hidden gem

I had this movie on VHS when I was a kid. I remember being surprised at how funny this movie was. If you're ever in the need for a laugh, this movie should do it. An over looked classic in my opinion.
