Chris Carter's 1993 TV series "The X-Files" is an undeniable staple of sci-fi television. However, it's also incredibly dated. It came out in the early years of the Bill Clinton administration, a few years after the end of the Cold War, right when Gen-x was growing up and America was experiencing something of an identity crisis. Without a war or a Great Depression to unite us, the sociological arguments went, America was culturally adrift. Having no enemies abroad to rally against, Americans began to look inward for enemies, sussing out where our violent impulses went. We found our own government to be suspect, and grew increasingly paranoid that a lot of dark information was being hidden from us.
In "The X-Files," '90s freeform paranoia manifested -- perhaps curiously -- as shadowy government conspiracies to cover up the existence of aliens, UFOs, and other unexplained paranormal phenomena. Only oddball FBI...

Long-running UK punk band Cock Sparrer have announced their final album. The LP, titled Hand in Heart, will arrive on April 5th, 2024.
Cock Sparrer formed in 1972, preceding bands like Sex Pistols and The Clash, but never achieved the commercial success of their UK punk counterparts. Amazingly, they still feature the same original four members — vocalist Colin McFaull, guitarist Mick Beaufoy, bassist Steve Burgess, and drummer Steve Bruce — as well as guitarist Daryl Smith, who has been in the band for more than 30 years himself.
Hand in Heart will be Cock Sparrer’s eighth album overall, and the follow-up to 2017’s Forever. The band will celebrate the LP with two record release shows: April 6th at London’s O2 Shepherd’s Bush Empire, and April 13th at Glasgow’s O2 Academy, with tickets available here.

Lady Gaga’s Las Vegas residency promises only two things: Jazz & Piano. But judging from the photos she posted of Thursday’s opening night performance and video that’s surfaced online, it contains so much more.
On Instagram, she posted a photo of herself holding a Broadway-style Playbill with anticipation in her eyes and a photo of Miles Davis (who plays jazz but not piano) blowing his trumpet over her shoulder. When the show was done, she shared another in which she was wearing a shiny tux (bowtie included) and her hairstylist,...

Tony Bennett accepted the boundaries of his universe.
In the last few decades of his life, the period of his greatest success, he never tried to do a Rick Rubin/Johnny Cash-style album of recent pop and rock hits tweaked to suit his voice. Instead, he transported the contemporary artists he worked with — Lady Gaga especially — to his preferred musical arena: the Great American Songbook classics of Johnny Mercer, Irving Berlin, Rodgers and Hart, the Gershwins, Harold Arlen, and so many more. Without seeing the cover, you’d never even know his “MTV Unplugged” album was an “MTV Unplugged” album just by listening to it. His last studio album, “The Silver Lining: The Songs of Jerome Kern,” speaks to his appreciation of the craft of songwriting embodied by the entire Great American Songbook era, and how a singer can work in dialogue with that songwriter even decades after their death to create meaning.

Tony Bennett, legendary crooner whose voice endured for generations, has died at the age of 96, just two weeks shy of his 97th birthday.
Over the course of a more than 70-year career, Bennett amassed a slew of accolades including multiple Grammy awards, a Lifetime Achievement Award and two Primetime Emmy Awards.
His first No. 1 song came in 1951 with “Because Of You”, followed “Rags To Riches” in 1953, his career reaching a peak in the late 1950s with albums such as The Beat of My Heart and Basie Swings, Bennett Sings, and of course, his signature song “I Left My Heart In San Francisco” in 1962. After a downturn during the height of rock, Bennett’s popularity surged again in the 1980s and 90s, and continued into the 2000s, teaming with Amy Winehouse on the standard “Body and Soul” and his most recent collaborations with Lady Gaga, beginning with the album Cheek to...

Tony Bennett, who crooned, swooned and left his heart in San Francisco, has passed away at the age of 96.
Tony Bennett had one of the most legendary careers of any singer in pop music history, working nearly consistently for around 70 years. After serving in World War II, Bennett began focusing on music, releasing his first single, “Because of You”, in 1951 through Columbia Records, who he stayed with for two decades. Bennett had a string of hits throughout the ‘50s and ‘60s such as “Rags to Riches” (famously used in Goodfellas), “Who Can I Turn To (When Nobody Needs Me)” and “I Left My Heart in San Francisco”, which became his signature song and nabbed him his first Grammy.
Over the span of his career, Tony Bennett would win 20 Grammys, a monumental feat that ranks him as one of the most decorated vocalists ever. Just last year, Bennett became one of...

Movie soundtracks can elevate ordinary stories, adding depth and resonance to beloved films. The lasting impact of these soundtracks is evident in the instantly recognizable songs that continue to endure. Sometimes, the music becomes a movie’s highlight, compensating for weaker storylines or characters.
Classic movie musicals like West Side Story have stood the test of time, while films like The Bodyguard provided a platform for legendary artists to showcase their talents. The longevity of these soundtracks is often measured by their chart performance, reflecting their profound influence on generations.
The intertwining of music and cinema is a magical combination. The closing notes of The Breakfast Club, the era-defining mix of Dazed and Confused, and the genius of Prince in Purple Rain are just a few examples of the powerful synergy between sound and vision.

This article contains spoilers for "Poker Face."
The penultimate episode of "Poker Face" season 1, "Escape From S*** Mountain," saw our favorite lie-detector Charlie Cale (Natasha Lyonne) avenge three murders and narrowly escape an early grave herself.
This episode is also the third and final episode that creator Rian Johnson personally directed this season. Johnson wears his filmmaking influences on his sleeve, like how "The Last Jedi" includes a casino-set crane shot homaging 1927 silent classic "Wings." Johnson is also the first director to get a "Vertigo" dolly-zoom into a "Star Wars" movie. "Brick" and The Benoit Blanc series are loving homages to mystery fiction of all sorts, and eagle-eyed viewers of "Knives Out" might have noticed a sly reference to Anthony Shaffer's "Sleuth."

Tony Bennett has been part of the pop cultural landscape for over seven decades. The 96-year-old scored his first hit song, “Because of You,” in 1951, the year he made his first TV appearances on a long-forgotten variety series “Star of the Family.” He recorded his signature tune, “I Left My Heart in San Francisco’ in 1962. Other hits included “Rags to Riches,” which Martin Scorsese used brilliantly on the soundtrack of his 1990 masterpiece “Goodfellas” and the Oscar-winning “The Shadow of Your Smile” from 1965’s “The Sandpiper.”
Unlike the crooners Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin, movie success eluded Bennett. Just check out his film debut in the overstuff 1966 turkey “The Oscar.” His career waned. Rock was hot and Bennett wasn’t. He stopped recording in the late 1970s and was in lot of debt. He turned to drugs but a near death drowning experience in his bathtub changed his life and lifestyle.

The long concert career of singer Tony Bennett is finally finished after 70 years.
Bennett’s son, Danny Bennett, his manager for more than 40 years, canceled his remaining tour dates on Thursday. He said on Friday that Bennett’s two recent dates with Lady Gaga at New York’s Radio City Music Hall would be his last.
Earlier this year, Bennett’s family revealed that the 19-time Grammy-winner was diagnosed with dementia in 2016.
The younger Bennett cited doctor’s orders as the reason, although acknowledging his father was still capable of performing at age 95. The move has been made to avoid any falls or other onstage mishaps, he said. According to AARP The Magazine, the singer rarely speaks, and “when he does, his words are halting; at times, he seems lost and bewildered.”

Seven years after the release of Cheek to Cheek in 2014, Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga are reuniting to collaborate on a second studio album together. In a recent profile on the "I Left My Heart in San Francisco" singer in AARP Magazine, his family revealed that he was diagnosed with Alzheimer's in 2016, but the neurogenerative disease hasn't stopped him from pursuing his passion for music; in fact, singing has helped him push forward over the last four years.

In June 1970, Elvis Presley made the trip east from his Graceland home in Memphis to Nashville, where he holed up in RCA Studio B on Music Row for five days of recording. Presley, who was in the midst of his Las Vegas comeback at the International Hotel, was joined by Music City sessions players like Charlie McCoy and Norbert Putnam — the legendary “Nashville Cats.” The result came to be known among fans as the “marathon sessions.”

Some films earn critical acclaim and you only want to watch them once. Goodfellas? We could watch it on loop...
What is the most compulsively watchable film of all time? Not the greatest film – there are lists dedicated to solving that particular conundrum scattered all over the internet. Rather, the one film that begs you to return again and again, the one you can’t help but see through to the end when you happen to bump into it on a late night channel surf. Citizen Kane, Vertigo, 8 ½: greats, undisputed classics long vaunted by critics, but not necessarily the kinds of movies with the irresistible pull of a truly, compulsively watchable movie.
What could be the best of these? Raiders Of The Lost Ark, with its peak-Spielberg action-adventure stylings? Airplane!, a riotous and unfailingly quotable comedy that spawned a thousand imitators? Could even one as...

It’s been 20 years since the Tanners were on television, and Netflix‘ Fuller House is an effort that had a lot of people wondering if the world really wanted to revisit the family. The theory of the show has a lot going for it, but audiences need to see things through a very specific lens.
In a world with more sequels, reboots, and reimaginings than it needs, and with the popularity (or at least Roi) of several film trips to the 80s, it just isn’t that strange to take another ride with a popular show.
That said, it can’t go unmentioned that Fuller House isn’t a good show. It just isn’t. But, it isn’t a terrible show either, and you’ve got to remember that it isn’t a look back to a good show, so you need to accurately set your bar.

It clearly wasn’t enough for producer Sonita Gale and her Galeforce Films company to make a documentary (Andrew Carnegie: Rags To Riches, Power To Peace, which screened at the Edinburgh Fest), they’ve now teamed up with Brian Cox to develop either a film or a TV series about the Scots-born American philanthropist.According to Screen International, Cox (who narrated the doc) and the Galeforce team are busy meeting writers to hear their take on the man’s story, having nabbed the rights to David Nasaw’s 2007 biography. Carnegie, who came to the Us from his Scottish home, ended up the second richest man in the world thanks to the steel industry boom at the end of the 19th century. He ended up giving almost all of his massive fortune away to good causes, including funding more than 3000 public libraries around the world. Carnegie Hall in New York is named for him.

Exclusive: Team behind Carnegie documentary plots film or TV mini-series.
The Bourne Supremacy star Brian Cox has his sights set on a biopic of Scottish-American philanthropist Andrew Carnegie.
Cox is developing a project about the tycoon with Sonita Gale of Galeforce Films, producer of Edinburgh Film Festival documentary Andrew Carnegie: Rags to Riches, Power to Peace, which was narrated by Cox.
Galeforce have optioned David Nasaw’s 2007 biography of Carnegie and intend to turn the story into a feature or TV series.
A screenwriter has yet to be attached but the production team will meet potential collaborators, including Borgia writer-producer Tom Fontana, in a bid to develop the idea further.
“Our intention was always to first test the waters and make a documentary,” Sonita Gale told Screen Daily.

Lenny Bruce: Dustin Hoffman in the 1974 Bob Fosse movie. Lenny Bruce movie review: Polemical stand-up comedian merited less timid biopic (Oscar Movie Series) Bob Fosse's 1974 biopic Lenny has two chief assets: the ever relevant free speech issues it raises and the riveting presence of Valerie Perrine. The film itself, however, is only sporadically thought-provoking or emotionally gripping; in fact, Lenny is a major artistic letdown, considering all the talent involved and the fertile material at hand. After all, much more should have come out of a joint effort between director Fosse, fresh off his Academy Award win for Cabaret; playwright-screenwriter Julian Barry, whose stage version of Lenny earned Cliff Gorman a Tony Award; two-time Best Actor Oscar nominee Dustin Hoffman (The Graduate, Midnight Cowboy); and cinematographer Bruce Surtees (Play Misty for Me, Blume in Love). Their larger-than-life subject? Lenny Bruce, the stand-up comedian who became one of the...

A big black hole –
The galaxy’s bowl?
Captain Power’s goal?
Enough poesy. What we’re dissertating on today is not verse, which I’m pretty sure I don’t quite understand, but goals.
But first, a brief look at what are widely considered the seven basic plots. I’ll be courteous enough to add, under each one, an example of what it is. This I will do in italics.
Here we go:
Overcoming the Monster – Gilgamesh
Rags to Riches – Cinderella
The Quest – Lord of the Rings
Voyage and Return – Wizard of Oz
Comedy – Modern Times
Tragedy – Oedipus Rex
Rebirth – Christmas Carol
Most of what I’ve just tossed at you are narrative germs that involve somebody trying to get or accomplish something – somebody with goals to achieve. (Tragedy and Rebirth are hereby excused. And Comedy can take a nap, if it wants.)

I love the art of animation, and it's amazing to see how far things have come and advanced over the years. The industry is changing in terms of technology, but what it all really comes down to is telling good stories. There's been a lot of great animated movies this year, and many of them are up for several awards at the 40th Annual Annie Awards.
Some of the movies nomainated include Brave, Frankenweenie, Hotel Transylvania, ParaNorman, Rise of the Guardians, The Pirates! Band of Misfits, and Wreck-It Ralph. Out of those films my favorite is a toss up between Wreck-It Ralph and ParaNorman, those were two pretty incredible films. I think ParaNorman has the edge though.
Some of the other animated properties nominated are Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Part 1, Disney Tron: Uprising, Justice League: Doom, Robot Chicken ‘DC Comics Special', South Park ‘Raising the Bar’, and several others.

Richard Alder, the Tony-winning composer and lyricist behind "The Pajama Game" and "Damn Yankees" and Marilyn Monroe's seductive "Happy Birthday, Mr. President" song during President John F. Kennedy's 1962 birthday celebration, has died. He was 90.
The Songwriters Hall of Famer's biggest hits include "You Gotta Have Heart," "Hey, There," "Hernando's Hideaway," "Whatever Lola Wants," "Steam Heat," "Rags to Riches" and "Everybody Loves a Lover."
Among his other credits, Adler co-wrote the music and lyrics for Doris Day's "Pajama Game," the film adapted from his Tony-winning play, and composed symphonies and ballets for the Chicago City ballet.
In addition to JFK's birthday celebration featuring Monroe's iconic performance, Adler also staged and produced several other shows for U.S. presidents.

After Glee‘s tremendous success, many may have predicted a wave of musical TV series entering production as various networks tried to capitalize on Fox’s good fortune. None came. This week, Smash premiered on NBC to strong ratings, bringing the tally of network musicals up to two. Given the tremendous potential for gain, both in terms of ratings and music sales, isn’t it unusual for the networks to be so hesitant? After some investigation, it appears not- as much as Americans love a good musical, they rarely commit to those on TV. Below is a brief chronology of musical TV series from the 1960s on.
>1960: CBS and the DuMont network each take a crack at a musical series with original songs in the pop/Broadway style, but neither series, Inside U.S.A. with Chevrolet (1949-50) or Once Upon a Tune (1951), takes off.

There used to be a lot of games that were just about fun, and, for a long time, it was how a game was judged. Your game could be technically brilliant, but if it wasn’t fun people wouldn’t buy it. Of course, things didn’t stay that way. Games today are judged by their realism, with every new game seeming more like a hard-working simulation than a pleasant escape from reality. The problem here is that it’s more fun to be less realistic. Waiting hours for a single shot to make a kill is realistic, but not exactly fun; whereas flying around a city in a hover-jet that fires air-to-surface lasers - while seemingly unrealistic - is about as much fun as you can have on through a game.

Before he was named one of the 40 greatest standup comedians of all time, became an Emmy nominee and found his voice as one of the most wry political commentators of our time, Bill Maher was an actor.
And he made some amazingly cheesy TV shows and movies.
As the host of "Real Time" climbed his way up the standup ladder, he tried his hand at Hollywood's more traditional career path, first appearing in the 1983 film "DC Cab." The film, about a bunch of cab drivers in, you guessed it, DC, is most memorable for its amazingly time-appropriate cast, which featured Mr. T and Gary Busey.
Other notable moments in his acting career include, "Cannibal Women in the Avocado Jungle of Death," and a two episode turn in "Murder She Wrote." But we'll let you take a look for yourself (hat tip to The Back Stage for the tip).
