Great movie for what I expected !!!
PatricioG9 March 2000
I expected a very bad b-class italian horror movie, and it is, but is enjoyable. It´s well filmed & the actors are acceptable. Music is very good, just listen to that demoniac sound that is heard from the basement (not joking, one of the best horror sounds ever heard by me). There are also some good deaths (the first two & one in the middle), the others are average. Plot is bad, but you cannot expect more. What I did not understand are the stupid reasons for entering again and again the Ghosthouse (example: a girl wants to take a shower) when those kids know that there is a killer or somewhat (I won´t tell what). Scenery is good, so the other places of the shots. Summarizing, I watched the film till the end, that hardly happen when I see this type of movies and are bad.

I could recommend it if you are a horror-movie fan, or if there is anything to watch...

Rate this movie with a 5.5 out of 10 .-

Cheesy fun.
Hey_Sweden9 July 2015
From director Umberto Lenzi (using the riotous Americanized pseudonym of Humphrey Humbert) comes this dopey, low grade, but engagingly dumb haunted house flick.

Things begin with a prologue of young Henrietta (Kristen Fougerousse) being chastised by her father for butchering the family cat, and then being locked in the cellar. Soon after the parents are brutally murdered. Flash forward 21 years, and HAM radio operator Paul (Greg Scott) picks up radio signals of what sounds like people being terrorized. He traces the signals to an isolated manor, meeting up with other young adults. Soon these unfortunate souls are set upon by the demonic forces residing within the walls.

A banal script (by Cinthia McGavin), truly silly dialogue (by Sheila Goldberg), lame attempts at horror, and some delicious moments of gory violence combine in this enjoyably bad movie. The acting is likewise lousy from most everybody concerned, although it's nice, as it always is, to see the great character actor Donald O'Brien (a.k.a. Dr. Butcher, M.D.) as a hilariously unsubtle, menacing axe-wielding caretaker.

The young actors *are* attractive, in any event. Lara Wendel of Dario Argento's "Tenebre" is top billed as she plays Paul's girlfriend Martha. The adult performers don't fare much better, but there are some great character faces among them: William J. Devany as a detective, Alain Smith as Henrietta's father, Robert Champagne as a mortician.

The music, by Piero Montanari, is very bad, but amusingly so, while cinematographer Franco Delli Colli works to give the movie a decent look. At least "La Casa 3" ("La Casa 1" and "La Casa 2" being the Italian titles for the first two "Evil Dead" movies) gets much mileage out of a creepy clown doll, much like "Poltergeist" did six years previous.

Filmed in the same house as Lucio Fulci's "The House by the Cemetery".

Six out of 10.

If this movie wud have released in today's time, the makers wud have definitely used the fake n misleading title of that of Annabelle doll or something like that.
Fella_shibby15 May 2021
I first saw this in the late 80s on a vhs.

Revisited it recently.

This one is a decent horror film with a creepy house.

The movie starts off in a fast paced manner n we get to see two gory kills.

It has sufficient body count n the ending is shocking.

At times the demonic doll in an isolated n creepy house does gives goosebumps.

A father who works in a funeral house has a nasty habit of stealing things of the dead and he gifts his daughter a stolen doll which turns out to be demonic.

At times we dont know whether the girl was doing all the killings, or the doll does the killings or the person to whom the doll originally belongs to, does the killings?

The confusion is there cos we dont get to see the killer or entity but jus killings and out of nowhere a doberman appears n disappears.

The voice on the radio, was it really from the future?

Nevertheless, i enjoyed it cos of the atmosphere n some bizarre stuff.

NO CLOWNING AROUND!
Father-Merrin6 June 2004
Recently I picked up this title as an absolute bargain on eBay for just 99p & to be honest I wasn't expecting much as I'm a huge horror movie buff but haven't heard much about this title.

The director is credited as Humphrey Humbert - but to my surprise this was a pseudonym for the legendary Umberto Lenzi (better known for the notorious Cannibal Ferox). But those of you expecting a cannibal gut-crunching movie will be disappointed. In fact the film doesn't really have much gore in it but for what it lacks in human entrails it certainly makes up for in creepy atmosphere & an unforgettable spooky soundtrack.

Now I don't know about you but clowns have always been sinister to me & Ghosthouse is basically about the spirit of a young girl who carries around this clown doll & when she appears in front of unsuspecting victims they are soon dispensed of. Its at these moments that the creepy 'nursery-rhyme-esque' theme tune kicks in & it'll play in your mind for days on end!

Don't get me wrong this aint no Exorcist or Dawn Of The Dead but its a little known movie which if you get the chance is definitely worth watching.

Maybe if the director had used his real name & billed it as 'From The Director Of Cannibal Ferox' then it would've done much better financially.

Walmart actors
iamwhitewica21 July 2016
This should be in a bargain bin. I have rarely seen such idiotic characters. If they would not have died I would kill them myself for such bad acting, makes you want to punch them and kill them yourself. Especially the 3 girls, actually forget this, all characters are acting like dumb idiots with no brains and no nerves.

Besides the cast that keep screaming at everything, they don't react. None of the actors in this movie seems real. NO ONE would react like these pathetic zombies, and if they do; they deserve to die!

The movie plot is good and with good acting and directing this could be a very strong movie. The directing and acting makes this version so lame that it should be burned.

I love B movies cause there is something in them you don't get in the Hollywood big flicks; soul. This movie however has no soul, no body, not much besides the amazing story idea. I wish someone would pick it up and make a real movie with real actors. (Is is so bad that you need to really want to see the end to endure the acting, again, it is soooooooooooo bad I couldn't believe it.)

A movie to watch, painfully, just to get the story behind it, good story, destructive acting and directing.

Creepy in parts, ludicrous in others, but overall a decent haunted house chiller...
bfan834 March 2009
Warning: Spoilers
Ghosthouse (La Casa 3) is a decent, yet flawed haunted house chiller directed by Umberto Lenzi (under the painfully obvious pseudonym, Humphrey Humbert. The story concerns a young girl and her demonic clown haunting a house just outside Boston. 20 years earlier, her mother and father were brutally murdered by the evil clown, and the daughter died under mysterious circumstances. 20 years later, two college students hear a distress call coming from a short wave radio. The trace it to the now decrepit and dilapidated house and soon meet two brothers, their annoying sister, and one of the brother's girlfriend camping at the house. Soon, they all begin to die at the hands of the evil clown and the little girl.

For the most part, Ghosthouse succeeds at being atmospheric and suspenseful, mostly due to the creepy nursery rhyme that either the little girl or the clown sings (it was hard to determine who it was). The house was played a major part in the film's dreadful, melancholic atmosphere. For trivia, it was the same house used in Lucio Fulci's less than desirable, HOUSE BY THE CEMETERY.

Ghosthouse had it's fair share of gore, unfortunately not too much of it, and it was difficult to see it due to the poor lighting. The acting was also a bit uneven and the dubbing of the actors poor. But that's to be expected with any Italian horror film. The ending was a bit downbeat, but a neat way to close the film. Another issue I had with Ghosthouse was that the actors were extremely annoying, and they all deserved to bite the bullet. The ending also felt rushed. Perhaps, their budget ran low, and they had to come up with something less expensive at the last minute.

Overall, Ghosthouse is worth seeing if you are a die-hard fan of Italian horror. Like most Italian horror films, it succeeds in being atmospheric and melancholic. Unfortunately, it ends up just becoming a run-of-the-mill haunted house slasher flick with uninspired performances and ludicrous situations. It is quite rare on video but it receive a DVD release in the UK. Seek it out only if you enjoy these kinds of films.

Not Another Bad Italian Flick!!!
geminiredblue11 March 2014
Warning: Spoilers
Once again, let me say "Thank God for RiffTrax." They tackled this one and came up with a gem! There are so many laughable moments, and their comments just add to the quirkiness of it all. Now then, those crazy Italian directors are at it again. This time, Umberto Lenzi (under the confusing pseudonym Humphrey Humbert) steals liberally from much better films, like POLTERGEIST, in telling a completely nonsensical story. Many years ago, a creepy little girl and her equally hideous clown doll go on a rampage and kill her parents. 20 or so years later (though it's never made clear because in Italian horror flicks, details are annoying) a ham radio operator named Paul (uh-oh!) and his bland girlfriend Martha sit around eating chili (cuz that's what us Americans do, right?) Then Paul's radio picks up a strange message. So out they go, attempting to find the source of the mysterious signal. Along the way, they pick up an annoying hitchhiker named Pepe. And finally come across the Ghost House. There, they meet up with a group of campers in an RV (cuz that's so American) and together, they decide to investigate the Ghost House. Now, I won't give anything else away, because this film has to be seen to be believed. Just know it's one of those unhinged Italian movies, so there's bound to be weird occurrences and violent deaths. But then again, that's why we love those crazy Italians. So track down RiffTrax's version, or invite your own motley crew of comedians over for a laugh riot!

Suprisingly chilling
slapmonkeyfilms31 March 2001
I expected this film to be nothing more than your very average 80s horror flick but it was much more.Admittedly the acting was well below par but the shocks certainly weren't.Any film encorporating clowns in my opinion can't help but be sinister there was no exception here the clown was terrificly scary, and the little girl dressed in white just added to it.The film also boasted some rather gruesome deaths especially the guillotine! This movie certainly surpassed its expectations.Deserves to be seen.

Dreadful haunted house rubbish from Umberto Lenzi.
BA_Harrison22 June 2008
Hiding behind the ridiculous soubriquet Humphrey Humbert, Umberto Lenzi (of Cannibal Ferox fame) directed this lame late 80s Italian/US co-production that starts off bad, and then rapidly goes downhill.

The film is a mish-mash of dumb, illogical, spooky (and sometimes deadly) happenings which occur to a group of teens staying at a deserted house. The cause of these supernatural events: the tormented spirit of a girl who is cursed to haunt the building because her father, a funeral director, gave her a clown-doll which he stole from the coffin of a dead child (what a great father: bringing home his daughter an ugly-as-sin present lifted from a corpse!).

Also mixed-up in the strange occurrences are a young couple who have followed a mysterious signal that they picked up on their ham radio set; they arrive at the house just as the weird and grisly deaths begin.

Lenzi's film is totally devoid of suspense, has plenty of elements which make no sense whatsoever (including a disappearing Doberman and a killer caretaker with a limp), features lousy acting, some dreadful special FX and some even worse examples of 80s fashion, and completely rips off the Tobe Hooper/Spielberg hit Poltergeist for several scenes (however, with a much smaller budget and a less talented crew, the results are laughable).

Lenzi's next film, Le Porte dell'inferno, was further proof--as if we really needed it--that the director's best days behind the camera had long since gone.

A Haunted house tale that is flawed but effective
GoodWill27 December 1998
Ghosthouse is a chilling haunted house tale with twists and turns that eventually lead up to confusion and unanswered questions. However, the film when it is not incoherent, is actually very enjoyable. It has many effective scare scenes and a twisted musical hymn, that will send chills down your spine for sure. So, in short, a relatively above average haunted house tale, rather good compared to late 80's horror, but an amateurish cast and a plot that tends to jump around emphatically, almost sinks the film. Almost. Worth a look.

Routine Haunted House Schlock
MetalGeek8 October 2016
A mysterious ham radio signal (!) draws a group of curiosity seekers to an abandoned house which (naturally) was the site of several murders twenty years ago. Soon they discover that the house is inhabited by the angry spirit of a long-dead little girl and her creepy killer clown doll. This Italian horror flick (from Umberto "Nightmare City" Lenzi) certainly doesn't skimp on the gore, which is a good thing because it's the only thing that made it watchable. The characters are all idiots, the acting/dubbing sucks and the story and dialogue are a complete mess. A better title for this one would have been "Outhouse," or "Sh*thouse."

Creepy Classic
Tikkin13 September 2006
I will never understand how this film manages to be so cheesy yet so creepy at the same time, but Ghosthouse pulls it off with ease. Right from the start we get some nice gore scenes and that creepy carnival music. Then we get some terrible acting.

The house has a very ominous feel to it, no doubt this is more down to the creepy music used (some of it taken from Stagefright). The acting ranges from OK to completely inept - several of the characters are just unconvincing in everything they say. For example there's the girl who says "Look, it's that horrible man!" The bad acting however makes the film more entertaining to watch and gives you plenty of laughs. The little girl and her doll are also very creepy, but I think the main winner in this film is the weird carnival music that makes it stand out from all other films. I love the scene with the "grim reaper" in and his maggot infested skull.

If you love 80's horror flicks, you can't go wrong with Ghosthouse. It has that nasty Italian feel to it, but also plenty of cheesy fun.

doesn't live up to the hype
horrorfreak213 February 2008
i went into this movie with high hopes. i had heard a lot about it and most of it was good. what i ended up with was a so-so Italian horror film.

the plot is simple. i didn't like the whole ham radio aspect, thought it was slightly cheesy. the acting was OK for the most part. i love Mary sellers and she does a great job. Lara Wendel got on my nerves with her accent. they should have gotten a better actress for the lead.

the pacing was off and the cast was hit or miss. Lenzi's direction was much better in black demons in my opinion.

too much going on in one film.

not what i expected but pretty OK film.

Boring
epeteet8 March 2007
Warning: Spoilers
Being a big fan cheesy 80's movies an Italian haunted house movie sounded like it'd be right up my alley. unfortunately this movie lacked everything a good b-rated horror movie should have; not much gore (I mean why else would somebody wanna watch an Italian horror flick), no naked babes, and on top of that it wasn't scary in the least. Basically the only thing it had going for it was the cool creepy music. Maybe if you absolutely can't stand clowns it might creep you out a little bit but otherwise i'd recommend avoiding this.

GHOSTHOUSE starts off promising with a couple decent deaths but it gets boring real quick. Nothing happens for the majority of the movie and when it does pick back up towards the end it's still pretty lame. It was so boring it took me three tries to finally finish it without falling asleep. I don't usually care about plot or acting but if i'm watching a horror movie i expect the victims to try to at least pretend to be scared. Not even a chick getting cut in half by guillotine can save this one especially since you barely get to see it. I'll give it 3 stars outta 10 because that's about how many scenes caught my attention. If you're looking for a good cheesy Italian horror flickthat delivers the goods check out PIECES or DEMONS instead.

Umberto Lenzi's Craphouse
Vomitron_G27 April 2006
Warning: Spoilers
A copy of Umberto Lenzi's GHOSTHOUSE was lying at the bottom of my closet for almost ten years now. I knew I'd seen it once, but I couldn't remember much of it. So last night I decided to watch it again. And, honestly, I don't know why I didn't remember anything of it. Because this is one memorable bad movie! Pretty bad Italian haunted house rubbish. If this was Umberto Lenzi's shot at making American movies, then he blew it big time.

Now, the first two murders in the prologue of the movie were actually quite good. Typical brutal Italian style and a bit classic in a way. But then flash-forward 20 years or so, and all goes down the drain. Laughingly bad! A radio-operator hears the most unconvincing cry for help ever on his radio. He and his girlfriend discover the origin of the transmission. It seems to come from an abandoned house. Some youngsters are spending the weekend there in the yard with their trailer-van. Et voilà, enough meat for the grinder as the house appears to be possessed by a girl and her doll (who died 20 years ago).

There's a lot of silly dialogues. But the dubbing is rather good, I must say. I think they mainly used the actor's real voices. Although there's one girl (I think it's Lara Wendel) which has such a thick accent, you can hardly understand a word she says. There's also that stupid joking black guy who serves absolutely no purpose (except getting killed). And don't get me started about that annoying nursery rhyme...

However, there is some amusing stuff going on (but there's no logic to it whatsoever, of course). There's one guy that suddenly falls into a lake of milk (!) in the basement (kinda cool). When he crawls out, his girlfriend mistakingly takes him for an oozing zombie and stabs him to death with a pair of hedge-scissors. Hahaha, I had some fun with that! The old caretaker was a hoot too. He's supposed to be half-crippled, but he manages to chase almost every single girl that crosses his path.

And then that tomb on the graveyard, that looks from the outside like a Hobbit's house... It has electricity in it??? There's a night-lamp that still seems to work after 20 years?!?!?!?! And the girl's corpse doesn't show any decomposing signs after 20 years of rotting away??? And can someone explain to me what was up with that ghost-dog? Barks a few times and doesn't do anything... and then vanishes. Nothing makes any sense in this movie! But the ending was good though: Bus of Death, hèhèhèhè...

So this movie is worth watching once, because it's pretty hilarious. Some death-scenes are mildly amusing, and I must say that some sequences succeed barely in being scary (the washing machine in the basement, some scenes with the doll), but in the end it's just a bunch of silly, illogical nonsense. I haven't seen a lot of Umberto Lenzi's movies (I've only seen CANNIBAL FEROX and NIGHTMARE CITY, which I both enjoyed), but to me it seems he's just a mediocre Italian director when it comes to horror-movies. Fans of Lenzi might wanna check out GHOSTHOUSE (that's what they'll do anyway), but if you're just beginning to discover Italian horror-cinema, then go with stuff from Argento, Bava, Soavi and Fulci.

Snoozehouse!
gwnightscream1 February 2020
Warning: Spoilers
This 1988 horror film features a couple and others entering an old, abandoned house where a young girl's spirit and her creepy, clown doll haunt them. This starts off ok with a bit of eerie moments, but becomes boring. The characters are also annoying and badly acted/dubbed. You could probably give this a view at least once if you're into supernatural horror, but may fall asleep like I did.

Umberto Lenzi's terror movie about a haunted house with stabbing, blood, gore and poltergeister phenomenon
ma-cortes14 June 2020
A girl : Lara Wendell and her boyfriend : Rhodes, hear strange voices by radio, it leads them to a weird and deserted house where rare happenings take place. Then visions of a deceased little girl and her clown muppet bring creepy doom to the innocent visitors of the strange place. Meanwhile, a nutty man, Donald O'Brien, on the loose is carrying out a criminal spree. We dare you to go inside.. Death holds the mortgage and if you move... They'll be hell to pay. Horror has found a new home. Enter at your own risk. Don't come alone!

Scary and eery film about haunted house made in the peculiar Umberto Lenzi style. This Italian director often uses pseudonyms as Humphrey Logan or Humphrey Humbert and made a number of cannibal, horror and Gialli films , many of them, nowadays, deemed cult movies. However, this terrifying picture is full of flaws, gaps and failures, in spite of it, resulting to be entertaining and surprising enough. There is a lot of gore, blood, including beheading, slashing, guillotining and anything else . Ghastly events taking place when protagonists show up at the creepy mansion with a bizarre small girl and her fantastic doll appearing spontaneously and causing horrible slaughters , while frightening to spectator with her scary abilities. The flick ripps off and takes parts here and there of other films, as Steve Miner's House, Evil dead, Exorcist, Dawn of the dead, Amytiville saga, among others. Features an unknown cast , exception for the slightly known Lara Wendell, Mary Sellers who starred various terror, dramas in the 70s, 80s and Donald O'Brien who performed a number of Spaghetti Western and horror movies in the 60s, 70s, and 80s.

This horrifying motion picture was middlingly directed by Umberto Lenzi. He was an Italian craftsman who directed all kind of genres such as Wartime: Bridge to hell, The biggest battle, Tempi di guerra, Wild team, The damned brigade, From hell to victory, Desert commando, The damned brigade. Poliziesco : Roma a mano armade, Napoli Violenta, Manhunt in the city , From Corleone to Brooklyn, The executioner, Brothers till we die. Eurospy : Superseven chiama Cairo, 008 operation exterminate, Kriminal. Terror and Cannibal fims : Sacrifice! Cannibal Feroz, Comidos vivos, House of witchcraft, Hell's gate , Invasion of Atomic Zombies. Giallo : Wide-eyed on the dark, Orgasmo, Spasmo, Paranoia. Spaguetti Westerns : Tutto per tutto, Pistol for a hundred coffins. Adventures : Invincible masked rider, Catalina of Russia, Triumph of Robin Hood, Temple of the white elephant, Adventures Mary Read, Sandokan, Pirates of Malasya, Zorro versus Maciste, among others. Ghosthouse rating : 5/10.

gory parts but cheesy effects
trashgang12 March 2012
Italian horrors are flicks that stand on their own. Mostly they have their typical score (Goblin is famous for making sounds and music) and the overall look immediately says , this is an Italian flick. On the other hand most of them look cheesy and not everybody loves them. Therefore the Italians knew what to do. Give the release another title clocking in on other successes. There are many examples and this one here surely fits in it. When Evil Dead (1981) was released in Italy it was called La Casa 1. Later on of course Evil Dead II (1987) was released as, you guessed it, La Casa 2. To be sure of selling Ghosthouse it was released as La Casa 3.

Naturally it had nothing to do with Evil Dead but it wasn't that bad after all if you can dig Italian gore. The main lead was Lara Wendel who we knew from Tenebre (1982). The other actors aren't that well known, some made it into the B-flick scene's and some are still busy up to today, a thing we couldn't say from our main lead who stopped in 1994. The director was Umberto Lenzi, famous from the gory Cannibal Ferox (1981). It all looks promising but for a flick made in 1989 the effects are rather cheap and even laughable.

The thing that sticks to your mind is in fact the creepy soundtrack. The vicious doll wasn't scary or whatsoever but combined with that particular score it did work. The flick itself starts of pretty gory and one slashing of a throat is done on-screen. From there on it falls a bit on the gory parts but it does work storywise. The acting isn't always top notch but that's also typical Italian, isn't it.

A nice flick surely to catch full uncut, only two versions aren't cut, the VIPCO release and the extreme limited 666 copy release (B cover) from X Rated Kult. The latter I viewed, included was the soundtrack. If this flick would have been released early eighties it would have fit into that era but for 1989 it's way to cheesy.

Gore 2,5/5 Nudity 0/5 Effects 3/5 Story 3/5 Comedy 0/5

Terrible 80s horror
spacyblu10 April 2022
Warning: Spoilers
I saw this on tubi I figured it's an 80s horror movie so I'm sure it's not entirely great and I was right. Starts with craziness and ends crazy. There is a weird little girl with a ugly clown doll that goes on a killing spree of whoever goes into the house they lived in. We never learn anything interesting about the little girl other than she started acting crazy after her dad gave her the doll which isn't found out till way later In the film. The doll itself is just ugly who gives their kid a gift like that sheesh. Then there is this weird annoying song that plays whenever someone is about to get killed no idea what the words are just a weird song that will get stuck In your head lol. There is alot of terrible acting all around and not great special effects. There are a ton of things that are never explained like why there is a huge weird caretaker person killing people, why is there a dog that suddenly appears and dissappears cause they don't say the kid had a dog. The young people that go to the house keep doing stupid things like going in and out of the house even though people keep getting killed. I mean you just want to watch a nutty bad 80s horror film than this is for you. I tend to watch movies like this I've never seen before just to see what it's about and also cause I was a 80s kid so I watched alot of crazy good and bad 80s movies. I say check it out it's a crazy movie but you can have fun with freinds watching it. Enjoy.

Everything and the Kitchen Sink
marcialyon10 February 2020
Hoping to strike gold, the filmmakers of Ghosthouse throw in everything they possibly can - violent giallo/slasher style murders, the creepy clown doll from Poltergeist, eerie radio messages, the most haunted house since Amityville, and creepy kids. To my surprise, it ends up sort of working in its own oddball way, feeling like one of those eager to please haunted attractions that pops up around Halloween season. It's silly, goofy, but sometimes creepy in spite of itself.

Pretty bad. Not much else to say.
ofpsmith24 February 2020
Warning: Spoilers
Admittedly I have not yet seen Troll 2 but I'm going to make a guess that this is a similar type of deal. I saw Ghost House on Rifftrax, and from where they dragged is beyond me. Firstly its original Italian title (this film is listed as being from Italy but was set and filmed in the United States) is La casa 3. Some of the related films on the IMDb page are La casa 4 and La casa 5, leading to believe that this film is in a series though I haven't actually taken the time to do any research confirming or denying this. It made relative sense on its own which is why I'm dwelling on this. So the story centers around this house in Massachusetts that's emitting some kind of radio frequency where a guy gets killed which is picked up by this college student in Boston who deduces exactly where it's coming from and decides (for some reason) to drive over there and check it out. He and his girlfriend find some other people there and discover that the house is haunted by this spirit of this girl with a clown doll. Credit where it's due, the film actually legitimately creeped me out which I was not expecting. Clowns generally don't frighten me but for whatever reason this one did. I think that's also due to the very eerie noise it makes which actually got under my skin. Well, at least it did before it sounded off in every other scene and just became annoying. The story is pretty stupid and it doesn't really make a whole lot of sense for the characters to do what they do. The acting is also pretty bad, sometimes verging on being cringeworthy. The comparison I drew to Troll 2 at the beginning is from one scene where a character about to be killed asks some questions like "What's going on?" and "What are you doing?" in a manner almost identical to that film. I'd say give this one a pass.

How can you not like this?
queenie_123423 November 2000
Warning: Spoilers
I can't believe that there are people out there who don't like this movie!! I've got to say that this is one of my favorite horror movies. I loved it from the first time I saw it. There are pretty good scare scenes, and some gruesome gore. For example, when Tina is cut in half, when Jim gets it in the neck with the fan blade, the blood coming from the faucet...etc. One freaky part is how the clown turns into Tina after she is dead, and comes to Susan. I can assure you that that would scare the hell out of me!!

The ending was quite bizarre, and I wish they would have made a sequel, just so we'd know what happened with the doll and it's creepy nursery rhyme. I'm telling you, this movie gave me nightmares after watching it. That rhyme just sends chills up my spine.... This movie rocks.... definitely pick up a copy and watch it. How could anyone say it "shouldn't even be used as toilet paper"..... I guess they just don't appreciate a good cheezy 80's horror movie.

Excellent value for a cheap horror movie
jdollak2 August 2010
I first saw Ghosthouse around 1996, and while I sat through it, not much of an impression was made. But the memories of the movie remained, and specific shots remained in my mind. Eventually I watched it again, and was struck with how charming it is. The script is unpretentious, with some incredibly simplistic writing. But the horror elements are a bizarre mix of fairly disconnected clichés. But it will stick with you, not in its entirety, but just little things.

I watched the movie a third time recently, and I'm willing to concede a few more substantial faults. The pacing is awkward and it slows down a whole lot during some sequences. Some of the things - like the little storm in the bedroom - are laughable.

Despite these faults, the fact is that this cheap movie is a memorable one. For a horror movie, the ability to remain in our memory is a really important one.

Almost a good horror film...

Warning: Spoilers
I say almost good, but in the end it does a bit too much wrong to be considered a really good film. Still, it was a fun watch as it had a lot going for it and I so wanted to see how it played out, but unfortunately there are too many problems with the characters and story that prevent this one from journeying into the good zone of films, so it must languish in the so bad, it's good category. So what is good about the film you ask? Very creepy girl with clown doll, some imaginative kills and the house used for the setting. What is wrong with it? The characters motivations for delving deeper into the mystery, the pointless insertion of a crazed caretaker and no on screen death for Pepe!

The story starts out with a father berating his daughter for killing the beloved cat. Probably should not have done that as soon something comes and takes out both he and his wife. Flash years later and a ham operator hears a disturbing message and yearns to seek it out for some reason. He comes across a group in a mobile home staying near the house for some reason and soon they devise a plan to see what is going on which costs one dude his life! The ham radio operator soon leaves and then comes back because he is obsessed with solving the mystery...for some reason.

Once again, all the good is just overwhelmed by the stupidity of the characters motivations. There is literally no reason for anyone to go into the house, yet even after the one dude is killed, a girl sneaks in there! They all just go out of their way to get themselves killed it seems as they simply just need to keep out of the house. Then there is the whole caretaker thing, he for some reason goes berserk and kills an undertaker and no explanation at to what the deal is with him and why oh why, couldn't I watch that annoying Pepe killed in a very horrific manner!

So we get some interesting kills and a good setting, but the story is just a bit to absurd. I know people are stupid in a horror film, but these characters take it to the next level! I would have rather seen more within the house as they made it clear that stuff gets warped within as we have many lights seemingly increasing in size before busting and a scene where a guy falls into some nasty liquid, but instead, they would rather show us a guy hunting down the reasoning behind everything, I mean that one old caretaker told the man nothing that the undertaker did not already say!
