The joke that makes The Naked Gun 2 1/2: The Smell of Fear great is relatively subtle. In fact, as a child, watching this movie over and over again, it went over my head. Only recently, after releasing the episode of Revisited dedicated to the original Naked Gun and discussing the sequels with a friend, did he clue me in on why the sequel is so funny. The whole point of the movie is that the bad guys, a conglomerate of nuclear, coal and oil industry baddies, want to prevent Richard Griffith’s Dr Meinheimer from presenting a speech to the president urging a change to the country’s oil policy. Meinheimer is kidnapped and replaced by a double to stop this speech from happening. Our hero, Leslie Nielsen’s Frank Drebin, has to save Meinheimer so he can present his speech, which he eventually does. But, the best...

Talking Heads have released the new, deluxe edition of the soundtrack to their seminal 1983 concert film, Stop Making Sense. Stream the album below.
Commemorating the 40-year anniversary of the original concerts that were filmed for Stop Making Sense, the new soundtrack features remastered audio of the full setlist, as well two previously unreleased recordings, “Cities” and “Big Business / I Zimbra.” Physical copies also come with new liner notes from the band’s four members, in which David Byrne explains that the energy of the songs was lifted by the excitement of the audience. “In many ways, these versions are more exciting than the studio recordings,” he wrote.
The release comes as A24 is gearing up to bring the film version of Stop Making Sense back to theaters next month, on September 22nd. The news of the movie’s theatrical return broke this past March, and arrived with a trailer showing...

At a glance, Beef may look like a tale you already know well. The 10-part Netflix series follows a road rage spat between two dissatisfied millennials (Steven Yeun and Ali Wong) that snowballs into a bitter, dangerous feud. This notion – of a perennially escalating conflict between strangers – has been brought to the screen many times before, in everything from Steven Spielberg’s Duel to old Laurel and Hardy shorts like Big Business or Tit for Tat. “Blood will have blood,” said Macbeth, and it’s true. Or at the very least, property destruction will have property destruction.
But outside this age-old conceit, Beef is a distinctly modern parable, one that could only exist in the age of social media. In fact, its whole story – of misplaced rage, futile grudges and petty one-upmanship – is pretty much the perfect metaphor for online behaviour. Its very title tugs at this fact: these days,...

Tom Brady might have retired (again) at age 45, but the cast of the new movie 80 for Brady is still going strong. Rita Moreno, Sally Field, Jane Fonda, and Lily Tomlin star in the film about a quartet of friends who are determined to see the legendary quarterback play in the 2017 Super Bowl. The movie is inspired by a real-life “Over 80 for Brady” fan club, but how old are the actors who play the main characters? All but one has hit her 80th birthday.

The 80s turned out to be a great decade for good memories and fun comedy, and the 1988 movie Big Business starring Bette Midler and Lily Tomlin was a fun feature at the time that has likely been nearly forgotten at this point. This story is fairly simple since it has to do with a wealthy couple that is lost in the backcountry near a place called Jupiter Hollow when the wife, who’s pregnant, goes into labor and has to stop at the local hospital. When another couple enters the hospital at the same time, the hilarity begins when the

We don’t need to tell you that Disney+ arrived last year with a ton of exciting content available from day one.
From Pixar to Marvel Studios, Star Wars to all those Disney classics, the first batch of subscribers were certainly spoilt for choice when it came to things to watch. And while original series like The Mandalorian have been hogging most of the spotlight – and for good reason – there’s a lot more coming down the pipeline that viewers can look forward to over the next few weeks.
Indeed, the full list of content headed to Disney Plus next month has now been revealed, and with highlights like Toy Story 4, the new season of Star Wars: The Clone Wars and the return of The Sandlot, it’s time to start getting excited.

“Rowan and Martin’s Laugh-In” was one of the most popular and topical television shows of its era. In the middle of the third season, just as the show was about to lose Goldie Hawn, one of its most popular stars, a savior appeared in the guise of Lily Tomlin. She joined the NBC show and became an almost instant sensation with her variety of characters that she had long spent developing in various comedy venues. With six Emmy wins under her belt, she now has another nomination for her ongoing role on “Grace and Frankie” with “9 to 5” co-star Jane Fonda.
With that newest recognition in mind for television, let’s take a look back at her accomplished film career which began in the 1970s. Take a tour of her 15 greatest movie performances, ranked worst to best, in the photo gallery above. It includes her Oscar-nominated work in “Nashville” plus “All of Me,...

Seymour Stein is indisputably one of the greatest A&R men in music-business history: As chief of Sire Records, which he cofounded with Richard Gottehrer in 1966, he presided over a label that for decades had not only massive hits — from Madonna, Talking Heads, Depeche Mode, Seal and others — but also acts that may not have had multiplatinum sales but shaped the sound of the last quarter of the 20th century: the Ramones, Lou Reed, the Pretenders, the Smiths, the Cure, the Replacements, Aphex Twin and so many more. A well-curated mixtape of Sire releases from the ‘80s and ‘90s is like the soundtrack to an era.
Yet Stein’s career stretches back to the 1950s: He began at Billboard and soon moved over to Syd Nathan’s King Records — home of James Brown — and several other gigs before cofounding Sire. And he’s still at it: He remains Sire’s...

This article marks Part 8 of the 21-part Gold Derby series analyzing Meryl Streep at the Oscars. Join us as we look back at Meryl Streep’s nominations, the performances that competed with her, the results of each race and the overall rankings of the contenders.
When Meryl Streep first collaborated with filmmaker Fred Schepisi, reaction to their work was decidedly muted. “Plenty” (1985) came and went from theaters in no time, spending all of one week in the box office top 10. In 1987, both Streep and Schepisi had better luck, the former contending at the Academy Award for her turn in “Ironweed” and the latter directing the popular Steve Martin comedy “Roxanne.”
In 1988, Streep and Schepisi gave collaboration another shot. While “A Cry in the Dark,” adapted from John Bryson‘s book “Evil Angels” (1985), was hardly a crowd-pleaser, the picture and Streep’s performance garnered abundant critical acclaim. The film would mark...

I think I have found a news reporter I can stand behind and his name is John Oliver. Not only does he seem knowledgeable about what he’s saying but even better, he puts it on blast continually and doesn’t let his foot off the gas until he’s good and done. His words about big business should strike a cord with a lot of people, particularly those that are interested in opening their own small business, because according to so many politicians on the hill “small businesses are the backbone of our economy”. And as Oliver says, if those politicians would

Join us as we take a look at some of the most head-scratching (and disturbing) movie-based toys to reach the market, and marvel at how they ever became approved.
Movie merchandising, especially the merchandising of toys, is a Big business. According to the Hollywood Reporter, movie merchandising was responsible for $262.9 billion worth of sales in 2016 (globally). Of that total, 45% were a result of toy and other entertainment-related transactions. That’s about $118 billion worth of merchandise, versus movie ticket sales which only totaled an estimated $38.6 billion. From these numbers, it is easy to see why film studios put such an emphasis on the merchandising capabilities of their films, especially the big-budget franchises.
However, just because studios and toy manufacturers have profited immensely from the merchandising of movies doesn’t necessarily mean that those efforts have been quality or well thought out. For the most part, those responsible for making toys for...

Stop Making Sense screens Saturday, June 17th at Webster University’s Moore Auditorium (470 East Lockwood). This is the fourth film in their ‘Tribute to Jonathan Demme’ The movie starts at 8:00pm.
Stop Making Sense (1984) is an action-packed concert film… not in the sense of leaping towers of pyrotechnics… but in the way of seeing David Byrne falling back, standing up, shoving lamps, and running around risers, while musicians emerge song-by-song and various backgrounds come and go. Everything is in perfect place for this concert film directed by Jonathan Demme –and, even better, it’s nonstop. There are no minute-long, audience-panning breaks; if one song ends, the next one’s almost there. And, of course, there’s the music. The worst of the Cannes slate is often characterized by self-importance mixed with complete wrong-headedness. That’s certainly true of Andrei Zvyagintsev’s Loveless and reportedly even truer of Kornél Mundruczó’s Jupiter’s Moon, both of which are competing for the Palme d’Or this year. But that goes a long way to explaining why unpretentious genre fare can be such a refreshing prospect amidst the arthouse torpor. That’s a slot that, in the competition slate at least, Bong Joon-ho’s Okja should have filled—and for a while, it looks like it may fulfill that promise. Opening ca. 2007 New York with a garish infomercial for the Miranda Corporation, headed by CEO Lucy Mirando (a blonde-wigged Tilda Swinton with bright silver braces), the sequence is a fluid mix of exposition and sprightly satire. World hunger is the problem and Lucy Miranda has the solution: a 10-year competition where...

The Hatton Garden Job,which is released in cinemas this week,is a film based on a real life robbery that has been called the “largest burglary in English legal history”. A daring heist from an underground safe deposit facility in London that captured the public’s imagination as much due the advanced age of the criminals involved as the brazenness of the crime itself.
With that in mind we take a look at some other films in which the characterisation of the elderly is defined beyond the usual physical limitations and vulnerability associated with senior citizens.

It’s going to be a 9 to 5 reunion for Jane Fonda and Dolly Parton at the 2016 Screen Actors Guild Awards when they present their former costar and longtime friend, Lily Tomlin, with the 53rd SAG Life Achievement Award, People exclusively confirms.
The legendary actresses share a long history and close friendship stemming from their classic comedy film about three working women living out their fantasies of getting even with their bigoted boss.
At the time the film was shot, Fonda and Tomlin were already friends who were recognized by their peers as some of the best actresses in the business.

If correct, the numbers are staggering, but with the ease, speed and cost effectiveness of the mobile games market, you can see why.

Billy Bob Thornton is reprising his role as Willie Soke in the upcoming comedy “Bad Santa 2.” Before fans see him as the grouchy, foul-mouthed con who dresses up as Saint Nick, he stopped by Comedy Central’s “Drunk History” to tell us all about one of the country’s Founding Fathers, Benjamin Franklin.
“Hi I’m Billy Bob Thornton and today we’re going to be talking about Benjamin Franklin, one of my heroes,” he says, before being interrupted by Derek Waters who pisses him off by asking him to redo his intro.
“Do me a favor, once we start, let me get three f**cking sentences out before you ask me another god d*mn question,” Thornton annoyingly tells him. Unfortunately for Thornton, Derek continues to tick him off by asking more questions regarding “Bad Santa 2,” including why they chose that title for the sequel, his co-star’s height and more.

“There are no victims. Only volunteers.”
So claims D (Ethan Suplee), a stoic ex-military type who restores antiques in the backroom of Carl’s (Clarke Peters) San Francisco-based shop. D is full of these kind of succinct insights, but this one in particular stands out in a series titled “Chance,” especially after the new hour-long Hulu drama opens with three separate tragedies seemingly caused by plain ol’ bad luck:
A woman becomes chronically depressed after seeing her father killed in a car accident. A man suffering from brain damage after a rough fall downs a near-fatal combination of household cleaners to “cleanse his body.” A woman who is randomly assaulted by a homeless man suffers irreversible trauma and becomes homeless herself.

Last Week’S Review: Episode 2, ‘Chestnut,’ Reveals a Deeper Level to the Game
Diagnostic Report
We begin with a very private book club meeting between Dolores and Bernard, who’s apparently been giving the host books to read, with this week’s selection being “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.” Dolores in general seems to be changing — and more importantly, remembering the things that have happened to her in past loops. Perhaps that’s what pushes her to start wanting more with Teddy, the fact that she’s just now becoming aware of the fact that things can change.
It’s here in Episode 3 that we get a more solid understanding of the loops that drive the established regular narratives — at this point, we’ve gotten used to familiar lines like, “Just trying to be chivalrous” and “Ain’t much of a rind on you.” But we’re also seeing more...

Last Week’S Review: Lin-Manuel Miranda Amazes, Astonishes in Trump-Heavy Episode
The long, national nightmare that is the 2016 election is a few weeks from wrapping up. This means that “Saturday Night Live” only has so much time left to tackle the dynamic between Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton and depraved businessman Donald Trump, and they’re not leaning away from it.
This week, an invigorated “SNL” took on “the second and worst ever” Presidential debate, passed out puppies to the audience, and introduced Emily Blunt as a legitimate comedic talent. Weekend Update even got in some jabs at Billy Bush and NBC! So what else worked, and what didn’t? Let’s dive in.
Best Sketch of The Night: “Melanianade”
If you try to parody Beyoncé, you have to do it as well as Queen Bey would, and — fortunately — “SNL” knows that. “Melanianade” was the show’s Trump-skewering version of Beyoncé’s “Lemonade,...

In 2014, Studio Ghibli temporarily halted film production following co-founder Hayao Miyazaki’s retirement, but that hasn’t stopped the studio from staying active in other ways, such as earlier this year when they co-produced Michaël Dudok de Wit’s “The Red Turtle.” Now, Variety reports that Amazon Studios has just picked up the American rights for another Studio Ghibli production: “Ronia the Robber’s Daughter,” a kids TV series directed by Gorō Miyazaki. The American dub of the series will benarrated by actress Gillian Anderson, best known for her role as Agent Dana Scully on “The X-Files.”

It’s the last day of June, and Billy Bob Thornton and co-star Nina Arianda are standing outside of Los Angeles City Hall, braving the summer heat to shoot a scene for their new Amazon series “Goliath.” It’s the show’s penultimate episode, and IndieWire is spending the day with the cast as they prepare to wrap Season 1.
Written by the Emmy-winning David E. Kelley and Jonathan Shapiro (“The Practice”), “Goliath” stars Thornton as lawyer Billy McBride, whose alcoholism ruined his marriage and got him booted from his own company by his former partner Donald Cooperman (William Hurt). Billy’s apathetic lifestyle changes when low rent practitioner Patty Solis-Papagian (Nina Arianda) enlists his help for what seems like a straightforward wrongful death case. Instead, it pits him against his old company.

323 BC Alexander the Great dies of an unknown illness. Colin Farrell plays him in a movie centuries and centuries later and it's suggested that it's a combo of Typhus, Bad Wigs, and Loving Jared Leto that does him in. Who could survive that combo? (Remember when Baz Luhrmann was going to make an Alexander movie, too, but Oliver Stone beat him to it? We wish it had been the other way around.)
38 Ad Julia Drusilla dies in Rome. In the infamous Bob Guccione movie Caligula (1979) her brother Caligula (Malcom McDowell) is shown licking her corpse. Somehow that's not remotely the most perverted thing in the movie!

We have the highlights of what's coming and going from HBO Now and HBO Go in January 2020.
A new year will eventually mean a new HBO with the release of HBO Max. But for now HBO Now and HBO Go continue on and are putting their best foot forward with the HBO new releases for January 2020.
Comedy is the name of the game for the HBO originals in January 2020. Larry David returns as Curb Your Enthusiasm season 10 premieres on January 19. Veep creator Armando Iannucci takes his satirical ways to space with Avenue 5 the same night. The New Pope is...sort of a comedy and arrives on January 13. Almost 76, Lily Tomlin seems to be busting out all over these days. She is the star attraction in Sundance breakout “Grandma,” opening this week, as a spiky lesbian intellectual named Elle (French for “she” or “her”) who shoots from the lip and takes no prisoners during a long day’s journey to help her granddaughter scrounge up the cash for an abortion. Her character’s motto in her first film lead since 1988’s twins caper “Big Business”? “You need to be able to say ‘screw you’ sometimes.” Tomlin also just earned her 22nd Primetime Emmy nomination as a septuagenarian neo-hippie opposite "9 to 5" cohort Jane Fonda as her uptight roomie in Netflix’s “Grace and Frankie,” now shooting its second season. From the early ‘70s, when she brought to life such comical creations as Ernestine the phone operator and raspberry-blowing moppet Edith Ann on the trend-setting TV show “Laugh-In” to her Tony-winning one-woman shows,...

Big business, snapping fingers, and nationalistic freak-outs are just a few of the highlights in the trailer for the new micro-budget film "Slackjaw," which premieres at this year's iteration of the Locarno International Film Festival. Front and center of Zach Weintraub's new film is "The Chris Gethard Show" regular Robert Malone and behind the camera is the director's regular, brilliant collaborator, Nandan Rao ("Green," "Hawaiian Punch"). Take a peek at the synopsis: A mildly absurd bromantic dramedy about the path to personal responsibility amidst the divisive fog of a politicized landscape. For the uninitiated, Zach's been at it for awhile, notching four films on his belt since 2010. His first, "Bummer Summer," chronicles a love triangle and is especially notable for being one of the very few films in a sea of many to get young love, longing, and ennui right. The fourth film, "You Make Me Feel So Young,...
