And that's when Timothée Chalamet became a Tim Burton character... The 25-year-old Call Me By Your Name actor stars in a Super Bowl 2021 ad for the all-electric Cadillac Lyriq that parodies the director's 1990 gothic cult classic Edward Scissorhands, playing Edgar Scissorhands, the son of Johnny Depp's title character. Also starring in the commercial is original cast member Winona Ryder. The 49-year-old Stranger Things star reprises her role of Edward's love interest Kim, now Edgar's mom. Chalamet's character resembles his father, with his wild black hair, and is just as shy and awkward but well-intentioned as he...

RuPaul's Drag Race is already shaking things up for 2021. (And it's only the first day of the year!)
During RuPaul's Drag Race Season 13 Episode 1, we expected some competition and fierceness as a cast of new queens entered for their chance to be America's Next Drag Superstar. But, to throw them into the fire with lip-syncs right out the gate, Mama Ru and company weren't playing around this time.
The competition kicked up fast, and it started the festivities on a high note.
Before we get into the nitty-gritty of the lip-sync battles, the entrance outfits are a category unto themselves. The ensembles shed some light on the queens' style, their decision-making, and what they could bring to the table.
The standouts from the entrance looks include Kandy Muse, Denali, Symone, Gottmik, Olivia Lux, Rosé, Tina Burner, and Elliott with 2 Ts.
Each of these outfits was well-constructed, showcased positive features for each of the queens,...

Times Square in New York will be closed to the public Thursday night for New Year’s Eve celebrations, the first time there won’t be a crowd at the iconic locale on December 31 since the first ball drop in 1907 (the first celebration at One Times Square in Manhattan was in 1904). But in a year in which the entertainment industry has had to adjust to a virtual stage, the show will go on and the ball will still drop at midnight.
Official Times Square New Year’s Eve co-organizers Times Square Alliance and Countdown Entertainment will present a six-hour commercial-free webcast (closed to the public and following New York state health protocols), with Jonathan Bennett returning as host. It will include performances from Andra Day, Gloria Gaynor, the Uso Show Troupe and The Waffle Crew. Recently, it was announced that Selena Gomez will be producing and starring in a film based on Peruvian mountaineer and activist Silvia Vásquez-Lavado's upcoming memoir, In the Shadow of the Mountain. While many have already called the role Gomez's "Oscar bait," others pointed out that her casting is another frustrating example of straight actors playing gay roles. One of the milestones Vásquez-Lavado is known for is being the first gay woman to complete the Seven Summits, which are the highest mountains on each of the seven continents. Vásquez-Lavado has also been called a "trailblazer," which begs the question, why is such an important LGBTQ+ figure not being portrayed by an openly LGBTQ+ actor?
The debate over who can play what roles when it comes to sexuality has intensified over the years, with the main argument being that "it's just acting, let who's best for the role be cast." However, this...

Armie Hammer has a succinct answer when asked how it feels for him and Lily James to play the same roles in the new version of Rebecca that were once played by legendary actors Laurence Olivier and Joan Fontaine: “Well, they’re both dead, what are they gonna say?”
Hammer (Call Me by Your Name) is joking of course, and he acknowledges working under the shadow of both the 1940 film directed by Alfred Hitchcock and the classic 1938 Gothic novel by Daphne du Maurier. But he also says that giving the story another go on the screen is a risk worth taking.
“You know, we’re doing an adaptation of a film that Hitchcock also made an adaptation from the same book,” says the actor in our Zoom video interview below. “They’re kind of like big shoes to fill, but at the same time, if you’re not swinging for the fences,...

Armie Hammer isn’t quite sure how far along development is on the “Call Me by Your Name” sequel.
“I still haven’t seen a script,” the actor told Variety on Wednesday while promoting his new Netflix movie “Rebecca.” “I don’t know if there is a script and they’re just not giving it to me or if there isn’t a script.”
“Call Me by Your Name” director Luca Guadagnino confirmed in April that a sequel, “Find Me,” is in the works, inspired by author André Aciman’s novel of the same name. At the time, he announced that Hammer and Timothée Chalamet had already signed on to reprise their roles.
“The passion I have is for actors and the characters, and I believe these characters have more things to do and experience and could be interesting to see them growing in life, it’s not about a sequel,...

Luca Guadagnino has been adamant in interviews that his new HBO series “We Are Who We Are” is different than his feature “Call Me by Your Name.” Both projects are set in Italy and follow teens as they come to terms with their sexuality, but the filmmaker has said “Call Me” is “about the past seen through the prism of a cinematic narrative” and “We Are Who We Are” is “about the here and now.” Regardless, the two projects do have something in common: Timothée Chalamet and Armie Hammer.
New York Times carpetbagger Kyle Buchanan was the first to confirm Guadagnino snuck his “Call Me by Your Name” actors Chalamet and Hammer into “We Are Who We Are” after eagle-eyed viewers noticed a background extra in episode three who looks identical to Oscar nominee Chalamet. “Call Me by Your” what? François Ozon’s new film “Summer of 85,” based on the latest international trailer, looks to be the gay summer-of-love story to end them all. The queer romance, set in 1985, boasts a killer soundtrack including The Cure and Bananarama, gorgeous cinematography, a coastal setting, striped T-shirts, and, of course, a beautiful cast, led by French cinema favorites Félix Lefebvre, Benjamin Voisin, Philippine Velge, Valeria Bruni-Tedeschi, Melvil Poupaud, and Isabelle Nanty. Check out the latest international trailer below.
“Summer of 85” was originally set to world-premiere as part of the (canceled) 2020 Cannes Film Festival competition lineup. Does Luca Guadagnino ever sleep? The Italian filmmaker released back-to-back arthouse favorites “Call Me by Your Name” and “Suspiria” in 2017 and 2018, launched the short film “The Staggering Girl” at Cannes in 2019, and he’s also working on an adaptation of William Golding’s AP English staple, “Lord of the Flies.” That’s not to mention his miniseries “We Are Who We Are” in the works, plus a sequel to “Call Me By Your Name,” and a long-rumored big-screen imagining of Bob Dylan’s iconic breakup album, “Blood on the Tracks.”

By the spring of 1980, Pink Floyd were one of the biggest bands in the world. Their four most recent albums (1973’s Dark Side of the Moon, 1975’s Wish You Were Here, 1977’s Animals, and 1979’s The Wall) sold by the millions and they packed stadiums across the globe whenever they toured. Seventies superstar bands like the Eagles and Led Zeppelin were running on fumes by this point and would split before the year ended, but Floyd had just started their ambitious Wall tour that was unlike anything rock fans had ever seen.

Timothée Chalamet just keeps getting more and more buzz every year. He's starred in huge movies like 2019's Little Women and Call Me by Your Name, which really got everyone talking about him in 2017. But we have some big news for you - you've probably been pronouncing his name wrong all along.
Timothée was born and raised in America, but his father is from France, which explains his unique name. Despite the accent mark, he pronounces his first name how you would imagine - "Timothy." However, he has said in various interviews that's supposed to be "Tim-o-tay," not Timothy. Sounds like he's fine with you saying it either way, though!
The actor's last name is a tad bit trickier. You may have been thinking it's "Shal-met" or even "Chal-met," but it has way more flair. Thankfully, back in 2014, when he was starring in Showtime's Homeland, Timothée was interviewed by Teen Vogue...

Jon Frosch: Here we are, team, another Sundance under our belts! As usual, it’s hard to confidently qualify a given edition of the festival as “good” or “bad”; depending on what you see (this year, there were 114 feature-length world premieres), Sundance can either be a thrill or a slog. Or, more typically, both — sometimes even within the span of a single movie (hello, Justin Simien’s Bad Hair).

Once Upon A Time In Venezuela Photo: John Marquez Mark Twain once said: "Prophesy is a good line of business, but it is full of risks." I've said before that trying to predict what will break out from Sundance is a tricky business - just as Amazon, Netflix and other film distributors, who don't always back the right horse even when they've seen the film in question, would surely testify. For every Manchester By The Sea and Call Me By Your Name, there's a Brittany Runs A Marathon or Late Night - films which, incidentally, I have no particular beef with but which could be said to have under-performed at the box office in comparison to the millions spent to acquire them.
Still, as the festival gears up to run from January 23 to February 2, I can't resist a having a punt - plus there's a couple that I have seen...

Upcoming horror movie The Turning may take place in the Nineties, but you’re not going to hear “Smells Like Teen Spirit” on the soundtrack.
Instead, director Floria Sigismondi teamed up with producer-musicians Lawrence Rothman and Yves Rothman to create a whole new aural environment for the movie, which is a retelling of Henry James’ 1898 novella The Turn of the Screw. They enlisted a cadre of musicians — from Courtney Love to Soccer Mommy — to write their own versions of Nineties music.

[Editor’s note: This post contains spoilers for André Aciman’s “Find Me.”]
There are few things Hollywood loves more than a beloved film property that can spawn its own movie universe, or at least a profitable sequel or two. But in a glutted market filled with sprawling franchises that have grown ever more predictable, some sequels provide a welcome alternative. Such is the case with Luca Gudagnino’s lush adaptation of André Aciman’s 2007 novel “Call Me by Your Name,” which traces the stirring summer romance between teenager Elio and graduate student Oliver, and has now received a sequel in book form.
Aciman’s latest, the much-anticipated “Find Me,” follows the characters into the next stage of their lives and is out today. What does it portend for a potential new movie?

Cherry Glazerr has recruited Portugal. The Man for the glossy, catchy new single “Call Me.” The new track will be celebrated Tuesday night with a pop-up merch store at Los Angeles’ Fred Segal store.
Ariel Rechtshaid (Haim, Vampire Weekend) co-produced the conga-accented song. The track is bright piece of California pop with singers Clementine Creevy and John Gourley trading off lines throughout the verses and chorus.
Cherry Glazerr recently made their late-night television debut, performing the Reggie Watts remix of their single “Daddi” on The Late Late Show with James Corden with Watts himself.

Booking anyone at all to appear in an Aretha Franklin tribute is an act of nerve, since she was arguably the one performer in pop music history who can be said to have had no real peers as a singer, even in her day, much less ours. With that as a given, “Aretha! A Grammy Celebration for the Queen of Soul,” airing tonight on CBS, is about as good as these things get, which is a good thing, considering how flagrantly embarrassing it’d be if the show had had to settle for even the B+ list of contemporary singers. The guest list here is a grade above that.
You could make a top 10 list just of your favorite sustained high notes struck during the two-hour telecast. For myself, I’d have to top that list with whatever gritty stratosphere it is that Patti Labelle is entering at the climax of the 1970 hit “Call Me,...

Cristina Ramos did something on “America’s Got Talent: The Champions” that no other act had been able to accomplish. On the January 14 episode, she got more votes from the superfans than Darci Lynne Farmer, the singing ventriloquist who won “Agt” in 2017. That got Ramos a place in the final and made her one to watch.(Darci Lynne is also in the competition as one of the wild cards.)
Cristina won “Spain’s Got Talent” in 2016 for her wild mash-ups of rock songs and opera. Now she could well win the first season of this “Agt” spin-off with her over-the-top style of singing. She mixes musical genres, including opera rock and disco into an unique sound.

Even among jaded music industry types — hardened by years, if not decades, of quasi-authentic glad-handing and perpetual cynicism — there are few events more whimsical than Clive Davis’ annual pre-Grammy gala. Every year, on the night before the award show, the record label kingmaker hosts approximately 1,000 people for an event that combines myriad performances with Davis honoring and anointing his favorite industry people — many of whom have long locked down “legend” status — alongside various sports and political figures.

Satan, flu shots, and the perfection of the marriage-proposal trophy show hijack – aka The New Streaking – set a very high bar at Sunday’s Golden Globe Awards kickoff trophy show season.
Long known as the warm-up act for the Academy Awards, Golden Globe Awards dove right in challenging that status, when co-hosts Andy Samberg and Sandra Oh snarked, “We are gonna have some fun, give out some awards and one lucky member Will Host The Oscars!”
The Oscars had to revert to Plan B for its 91st awards ceremony – bypassing the show-host format and lining up stars to help out with the ceremony – after Kevin Hart appeared not inclined to reemerge as host, despite last-ditch on-air effort of Ellen DeGeneres to convince him otherwise. Hart stepped down from the gig two days after being announced, when social media went viral with homophobic tweets from his past.

After the #MeToo movement exploded in 2017 and brought renewed attention to the treatment of women in Hollywood Greta Gerwig (“Lady Bird”) became only the fifth woman ever nominated for Best Director at the Oscars. But despite a strong slate of 2018 films helmed by women, it looked like this year would return to an all-male lineup. However, Debra Granik has emerged from this fall’s independent film and critics’ awards as a dark horse contender for her intimate father-daughter drama “Leave No Trace.” Now a few of our top users think she’ll make the cut.
There have been a number of noteworthy films this year from female directors, including”Can You Ever Forgive Me?” (Marielle Heller), “Private Life” (Tamara Jenkins), “The Rider” (Chloe Zhao), “Destroyer” (Karyn Kusama) and “You Were Never Really Here” (Lynne Ramsey), among others. But none of them were making a strong impression in our racetrack odds.

This article marks Part 16 of the Gold Derby series analyzing 84 years of Best Original Song at the Oscars. Join us as we look back at the timeless tunes recognized in this category, the results of each race and the overall rankings of the winners.
The 1980 Oscar nominees in Best Original Song were:
“People Alone” from “The Competition”
“Fame” from “Fame”
“Out Here on My Own” from “Fame”
“On the Road Again” from “Honeysuckle Rose”
“9 to 5” from “9 to 5”
Won: “Fame” from “Fame”
Should’ve won: “9 to 5” from “9 to 5”
1980 marks a refreshingly sensational year for Best Original Song at the Oscars – and that’s even in spite of voters not recognizing the memorable likes of Blondie‘s “Call Me” (from “American Gigolo”); Kenny Loggins‘ “I’m Alright” (from “Caddyshack”); Olivia Newton-John‘s “Magic” (from “Xanadu”); and Neil Diamond‘s “America” (from “The Jazz Singer”).

As more critics and audiences have gotten to see “Beautiful Boy” and “Green Book,” our Oscar odds for Best Supporting Actor have taken a turn. “Green Book” star Mahershala Ali moved into the lead, while the former front-runner, “Beautiful’s” Timothee Chalamet, slipped a bit. But it’s far from an open-and-shut case. Voters may be reluctant to give Ali a second Oscar just two years after his victory in the same category for “Moonlight.” And five Experts are still backing Chalamet for the win.
Ali gets leading odds of 37/10 based on the combined forecasts of thousands of Gold Derby users. That includes a majority of the 29 Expert journalists we’ve polled from top media outlets. Ali benefits from the fact that “Green Book” looks like a stronger Best Picture contender based on our current forecasts, and it’s easier for an actor to win while riding a wave of support for a popular film.

Man, there were some great speeches at Sunday’s Oscars. Some were wordy and made grand points about the times we live in, like Best Director winner Guillermo del Toro. With that in mind, here’s a look at the six speeches that stood out the most during this year’s Oscar ceremony.
