- Raised as sisters, one is in fact the other's mother. Unwilling to continue living a lie, the mother tries to get her daughter back from her parents.
- Majka (Maja Barelkowska), a final year university student, returns her library books after getting expelled. Majka is planning to go to Canada with her little sister Ania but needs to produce the consent of the mother to take Ania with her.
Ania suffers from repeated nightmares and starts crying loudly. Majka tries but is not able to console her. Her mother Ewa (Anna Polony) provides the motherly comfort needed to Ania but displays a very hostile attitude towards Majka. Majka is hurt from all this, she goes to her father Stefan (Wladyslaw Kowalski), who tries to pacify her.
Ania and Ewa go to the school theatre to watch a performance. Majka sneaks into the theatre and kidnaps Ania from the backstage. They take a train to get out of the city. In the countryside, Majka takes Ania to a ride. After playing with her for a while, she reveals to Ania that she is her real mother, not Ewa. Ewa cannot find Ania after the end of the performance. She looks for her everywhere, running endlessly around the theatre and asking everyone. Disheartened Ewa returns home and informs Stefan about Ania's disappearance.
Majka takes Ania to the home of her real father, Wojtek (Boguslaw Linda), in the country. Wojtek is surprised to see Majka after so many years and hesitates to take them in at first. Majka learns that Wojtek has given up writing and now makes Teddy Bears for a living. They discuss their past and present life. Ewa could not have any more children after Majka was born, Majka believes this is the reason why Ewa is so rude to her. When 16-year-old Majka got pregnant with her school teacher Wojtek's child, Ewa made arrangements to hide the scandal but Majka believes only Ewa benefited from those arrangements. Ewa, the headmistress of the school, had asked Wojtek to be quiet about the incident and stay away from Majka. She also registered Ania as her own child and not of her daughter Majka. Wojtek says all this would never have happened if Majka was ready to call that child as theirs. Majka tells Wojtek that she is going with Ania to Romania in the summer and she will get Ewa to sign the certificate stating Majka is the mother of Ania.
After meeting his six-year-old daughter Wojtek's heart is filled with a mixture of emotions but he gradually grows closer to her. Majka goes to a telephone booth to call her parents. She asks them to call off the police search and puts forward her condition for returning Ania- she wants her motherhood back. Ewa and Stefan are given 2 hours to answer back. They call all of their friends, family, and acquaintances to find out where Majka could be. Stefan also calls Wojtek but he does not tell him anything.
Wojtek asks Majka not to take Ania far away as all this could have a negative impact on her young mind. He begs her to go back to Warsaw. Majka apparently agrees with him. But when Wojtek returns home with his friend's car, Majka and Ania are gone. Majka returns to the phone booth to call Ewa. Ewa refuses to give in and offers to buy her an apartment, frequent visits to Ania and also guardianship of Ania when she dies. Majka refuses the offer and threatens Ewa that she will never see them again, and hangs up the phone just when Ewa was about to say "Majka, I agree!".
Wojtek calls Ewa, tells her that he lied before and now Majka has run away from his house. Stefan and Ewa go to Wojtek's place and they start searching for Majka around. Majka takes Ania to the railway station but there are still two hours before the next train comes. The lady at the ticket counter suspects they might be in trouble and offers them to rest at her office till the train arrives. Ewa and Stefan arrive at the railway station looking for them. They ask about Majka and Ania at the ticket counter, but the lady tries to deceive them. But her efforts to help Majka fails when the sleeping Ania wakes up after hearing Ewa's voice and Ewa spots her. Ania runs to Ewa. Majka is heartbroken to see her plan fall apart. The train arrives and Majka runs away from them to board the train. Ewa hopelessly tries to call Majka back. As the train departs Ania runs after it till the platform ends, her young mind tries to comprehend all that has happened.
