Matt Damon would somewhat reunite with his Good Will Hunting and Ocean’s series co-star Casey Affleck in Oppenheimer. However, they would not share a scene together in Christopher Nolan’s historical epic. The two are set to star in an action-comedy-heist movie that brings them back to their native Boston in The Instigators. The heist film is co-written by Affleck, but will be directed by the Road House remake‘s Doug Liman. Affleck says, “The inspiration for this was definitely Midnight Run and Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.” He also stated that he’s always “wanted to do a buddy action comedy.”
Entertainment Weekly has the first look at The Instigators, which features images with the co-leads and their co-star Hong Chau, who recently worked with Damon in the critically and audience-panned Downsizing. The plot, according to EW says, “Damon costars as Rory, a desperate father who reluctantly...

In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Casey Affleck says that “Midnight Run” served as his inspiration for writing a brand new Boston-based heist film called “The Instigators.” This news comes fresh off the heels of both Affleck and Matt Damon playing military men in last year’s global phenomenon “Oppenheimer.”
The film is co-written by Affleck and features the two going back to their Boston origins.

With numerous films and TV series in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it’s a daunting proposition for a newcomer to even think about getting caught up on the various characters and storylines.
But Shawn Levy, who directed the upcoming Deadpool & Wolverine, says there will be no “homework” required to enjoy his film.
“I was a good student in school. I’ll do my homework as an adult. But I am definitely not looking to do homework when I go to the movies,” Levy told the Associated Press.
He added that his goal was to make the already established fans happy but also create a movie that anyone can enjoy.
“I very much made this film with certainly a healthy respect and gratitude towards the rabid fan base that has peak fluency in the mythology and lore of these characters and this world,” he said. “But I didn’t want to presume that.

Deadpool & Wolverine director Shawn Levy wanted to show spoiler-free footage, and perhaps it is, but, boy was it hysterical. In the nine minutes shown Ryan Reynolds is adjusting to normal life, content to aim for the middle, because you never miss.
He sasses his way around his birthday party where his tells his blind friend Al (Leslie Uggams) she can’t or say cocaine (“Do you want to build a snowman?” she asks and jokes in code). Monica Baccarin’s Valerie is seeing another guy, so we’re told. A black-clad Swat team arrives at Wade’s apartment where he’s taken to Matthew Macfadyen’s Mr. Paradox who wants to bring Deadpool back to work or as our hero refers to himself “Marvel Jesus”. In another sequence, Deadpool insults Wolverine for leaving his house dressed like an LA Rams fan which ticks off the hand-fanged hero.

“Ma’am, I’m 10 years old, you think I could write this alone? I don’t think so.” The age demographics in Hollywood are about to skew a lot younger because a pre-teen has pitched an idea that is soon enough going to be written for the screen – and it’s a wonder it hasn’t been made yet. Here we have Home Alone meets The Godfather, in which we imagine one scene where Kevin McCallister jumps on his parents’ bed, only to find a decapitated horse head at the foot of it. The title? Little Wiseguy.
But the pitch doesn’t come from a desperate studio suit but rather a 10-year-old named Connor Esterson, who you may actually be familiar with, as he co-starred in last year’s Spy Kids: Armageddon. Aaron Stanford is returning to the MCU, as it was revealed in the Deadpool & Wolverine trailer released during the Superbowl on Sunday. He is reprising the role of Pyro which he portrayed in X2 and X-Men: The Last Stand.
“I’m very excited to be revisiting this role, and couldn’t think of a better place for Pyro’s resurrection than the Deadpool universe,” Standford tells Deadline in a statement.
While details as to the plot of the film have thus far been under wraps, director Shawn Levy told Deadline at last year’s Toronto Film Festival that the goal was for the film to feel “grounded” and “real” — more like “a descendant of Midnight Run, and 48 Hours, and Planes, Trains and Automobiles” than “a descendant of Airplane.”

Updated After 9:04 Am Post…After resuming production post actors strike in November, Marvel Studios’ Deadpool 3 has wrapped per its leading man Ryan Reynolds.
“The suit hides blood. Also sweat… But today, with Deadpool wrapping, it’s mostly tears. A giant and forever thanks to the cast and crew of our film who battled wind, rain, strikes and @thehughjackman… all under the stalwart leadership of @slevydirect” wrote the actor who plays the Merc with the Mouth.
“I got to make a movie with my closest pals and that doesn’t happen very often. See ya July 26th,” he added.
Deadpool 3 was one of a handful of feature productions to resume promptly late fall along with Warner Bros’ Beetlejuice 2, Paramount’s Gladiator 2, Sony’s Venom 3 and Warner’s Juror No. 2. Deadpool 3 was roughly 50% in the can before the actors strike began in mid-July 2023. The threequel...

Deadpool 3 is officially wrapping up production, and Ryan Reynolds is celebrating the occasion with a picture of his crotch! Move over, Jareth, there’s a new codpiece in town! The superhero threequel has fought an uphill battle since cameras started rolling, with unpredictable weather, Hollywood strikes, and Hugh Jackman gumming up the works. As the only Marvel Studios film releasing in 2024, a lot is riding on the Merc With a Mouth’s next round of silver-screen shenanigans.
The good news is that fans are climbing the walls for the next Deadpool movie. The sequel carries an air of mystery as Jackman’s involvement means Wade and Logan will finally lock horns on the big screen. Rumors suggest Deadpool 3 includes aspects of multiversal madness, too, leading to surprising cameos and nods to bygone eras of Marvel’s cinematic offerings. Expect the X-Men to get roasted beyond recognition, True Believers.

A New Year means lots of removals from Netflix and January 1st is looking busy, with over 100 movies set to leave the service already. Below, we’ll be keeping track of all the Netflix departures for the first month of 2024.
First, a few housekeeping notes as to how Netflix removals work before we dive in. Due to licensing agreements, shows and movies added to Netflix aren’t added forever. Instead, they’re essentially rented for a fixed period. All the shows below have their current window on Netflix ending and will likely be bound for a rival streaming service.
We list titles slightly differently from other outlets, with our listings being the actual day of removal. If you want to watch any titles scheduled to expire on January 1st, for example, you’ll need to watch by the end of December 31st.

Potential "Deadpool 3" spoilers to follow.
In a time of great turmoil for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, who better to come strolling in than the Merc With A Mouth himself? The big-screen iteration of Deadpool -- as played by Ryan Reynolds -- thrives on upending expectations for the superhero genre, like when "Deadpool 2" introduced a version of the famous mutant outlaw squad known as X-Force, only to immediately kill off the entire team in a comically violent fashion (save for Zazie Beetz's luck-powered Domino). A little chaos along those lines would surely do the MCU good at this juncture, allowing it to shake off its recent woes and work towards a better tomorrow.
For that to happen, however, Marvel Studios should probably do a little House (of Ideas) cleaning first. Enter "Deadpool 3," a three-quel that's gotten fans hyped ever since it was confirmed to bring Reynolds' Wade Wilson into the MCU.

Deadpool 3 loses its May release date as the strike continues to affect the 2024 theatrical schedule
We’re hearing disappointing news concerning 20th Century Studios‘ Deadpool 3 release. According to Deadline, the highly-anticipated threequel starring Ryan Renolds and Hugh Jackman will lose its May release date because of complications related to the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike. Deadline says that even if the strike ends in the next few weeks, it’s almost impossible for the superhero sequel to keep its original release date. In its current state, the movie is half-finished. In other words, there’s lots more work to do on the film before it can hit its target of May 3, 2024. While the Deadpool 3 delay is a bummer, it’s understandable, given the circumstances.
According to sources, there’s a chance Captain America: Brave New World could move to an earlier date, seeing as it’s finished production. Additionally, if Deadpool 3 can’t open by July 26, 2024, it could move to November, a sweet spot for MCU success.

Exclusive: In one of the first major blows to the 2024 theatrical release schedule due to the ongoing actors strike, sources tell us that Marvel Studios’ Deadpool 3 won’t be making its May 3 start-of-summer theatrical release date. Even if the strike ends in the next few weeks, a 2024 restart on the half-finished Deadpool 3 would not get the Ryan Reynolds-Hugh Jackman threequel to a May opening date.

After years and years of wishing it would be so, a great many Marvel fans are finally going to get the proper team-up between Deadpool and Wolverine they've wanted for in "Deadpool 3." Indeed, both Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman will be reprising their roles as Wade Wilson and Wolverine, respectively, uniting for the first time on screen since the disaster that was "X-Men Origins: Wolverine." It turns out that "Logan" director James Mangold actually had conversations with both actors about such a thing some years back, and he envisioned it as a road trip buddy movie, harkening back to some true classics.
Mangold isn't involved in "Deadpool 3," which is being directed by Shawn Levy ("Free Guy"). However, while promoting the release of "Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny," the filmmaker explained to Comicbook.com that he talked to Reynolds and Jackman about it back when Fox was still...

'Deadpool 3' director Shawn Levy is hoping Hollywood's striking writers and actors can reach a resolution to allow work on his superhero movie to continue. The US entertainment industry has been brought to a standstill after members of the Writers Guild of America and the SAG-AFTRA actors union walked out earlier this year as part of an ongoing dispute over issues including pay and conditions and Levy was half-way through making his Marvel movie - starring Ryan Reynolds - when they had to shut down. He's now insisted he's hoping the unions can reach a deal with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) to get movie production back up and running again. Speaking to Deadline.com, he explained: "Well, like the rest of our industry, or at least large swath of it, we’re paused. We’re halfway through filming 'Deadpool', co-starring Wolverine.

Watching it in 2023, one might find themselves a little baffled as to why Martin Brest's 1984 crime comedy "Beverly Hills Cop" was such a massive success. Made for a modest $13 million, "Beverly Hills Cop" caused a sensation, earning over $234 million domestically which is, when adjusted for inflation, closer to $700 million. It made Eddie Murphy a household name and more or less codified an emerging genre of R-rated buddy cop movies that would remain ascendant throughout the 1980s and into the 1990s. The success of "Beverly Hills Cop" might confuse people, however, as it seems wildly basic these days. The jokes are not particularly funny, and while Murphy is as charismatic as they come, his Snobs vs. Slobs shtick seems trite and tired.
It seems that "Beverly Hills Cop," however, was merely outstripped by its imitators. In the wave of imitators that spawned, filmmakers pushed the action and the humor to higher and higher degrees,...

Martin Brest's "Scent of a Woman" was one of the most critically acclaimed films of 1992. Powered by an emotionally raucous screenplay from the late, great Bo Goldman, it's probably best remembered 31 years later for the hoo-hahing performance showcase that earned Al Pacino the Best Actor Oscar he should've won for, take your pick, "The Godfather Part II," "Serpico" or "Dog Day Afternoon." This is unfair. The film does run a tad long, and concludes with a conventional stand-up-and-cheer monologue from Pacino, but the length is excusable because Brest gives his best moments, most of which arrive during the film's second act, an abundance of oxygen. He lets his actors explore, which was catnip for Pacino and a blessing for his 22-year-old co-star Chris O'Donnell.

Making movies is hard, unglamorous work. It requires a functional collaboration between hundreds of people who specialize in wildly different disciplines, and it's all overseen by one person who must maintain a clear channel of communication with dozens of assistants and department heads to make sure everyone is on the same page and, god willing, on schedule.
Some people handle the stress better than others. Clint Eastwood apparently doesn't break a sweat bringing movies in ahead of schedule and under budget (albeit occasionally underlit and conceptually half-assed). On the flip side, Werner Herzog allegedly pulled a gun on his recalcitrant star Klaus Kinski during the making of "Aguirre: The Wrath of God."
As for Martin Brest, the critically acclaimed director of "Midnight Run" and "Scent of a Woman," the pressure of completing a film can prove physically draining. This is evidently one reason why he's only made seven movies over his 46-year career.

Martin Brest directed Beverly Hills Cop, Midnight Run, Scent of a Woman, and Meet Joe Black, but his last movie was such a flop that it brought his career to a grinding halt — Of course, I’m talking about Gigli.
Gigli was a romantic comedy crime movie starring Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez. As the pair were romantically involved at the time, the movie generated an enormous amount of interest but it wound up becoming a box-office bomb that some consider to be one of the worst movies ever made. Ascending the driveway of a sprawling home in the Hollywood Hills for a face-to-face interview with Martin Brest, the legendary — and legendarily reclusive — director of “Beverly Hills Cop” and “Midnight Run,” it was tough not to immediately think of Xanadu, the protective enclave Charles Foster Kane retired to at the end of “Citizen Kane.” It seems like a fitting place for a former prince of the movie business to spend exile. Upon arrival, I quickly discover that the impeccably manicured property doesn’t, in fact, belong to Brest but to an artist friend, as does the lumbering, pitch-black Saint Bernard watching benevolently over our poolside conversation about the filmmaker’s career. By all accounts (most of all his own), that career came to a fiery end because of “Gigli,” but Brest soon explains how he made peace with the cataclysmic flop — even if he still can’t bear to mention it by name.

Matt Damon and Ben Affleck achieved enormous success after penning the Oscar-winning film Good Will Hunting. The film left such an impression that some hoped to see a Good Will Hunting sequel down the line. But Damon believed a second Good Will Hunting movie already appeared in this classic comedy.
Matt Damon once revealed how he felt about a ‘Good Will Hunting’ sequel Matt Damon and Ben Affleck | Tim Mosenfelder/Getty Images
Damon didn’t mince words when expressing his opinion about a Good Will Hunting sequel. The actor has always felt that a second film shouldn’t be made for the sole sake of profitable gain. For The Bourne Identity star, a sequel to his Oscar-winning movie would’ve been just that. Besides, he joked to fans that a Good Will Hunting sequel already somewhat existed.
“We did the sequel in Jay & Silent Job Strike Back,” Damon once said to Empire.

When Leonardo DiCaprio introduced the Life Achievement Award at the Screen Actors Guild annual ceremony in 2020, he recalled his father taking him to the cinema to watch "Midnight Run" when he was 13 years old. During the film, his dad said to him:
"If you really want to be an actor and get into this profession, if you want to understand what great acting is, you watch that man on screen."
No, he wasn't talking about Charles Grodin; he was referring to the actor honored that night for his legendary career, Robert De Niro. A few years after that trip to the movie house, DiCaprio found himself starring alongside the legendary actor in "This Boy's Life." It was a major break for the teenager after roles in "Critters 3" and "Poison Ivy," and he more than held his own against the two-time Oscar winner playing a young man suffering abuse at...

Leonardo DiCaprio has been known to go to extreme lengths to prepare for roles in movies like The Revenant and others.
But there was one technique DiCaprio used to prepare for all of his films.
Leonardo DiCaprio often isolated himself while doing movies Leonardo DiCaprio | Axelle/Bauer-Griffin/FilmMagic
DiCaprio has spent a decent amount of time inside the skin of disturbed characters in his acting career. He once considered his role in Martin Scorsese’s Shutter Island among some of his most taxing characters. The feature saw DiCaprio as a police officer with dark secrets investigating crimes in a mental institution. And it left a massive impression on the Oscar-winner.
“This is the most challenging one to date for me. Physically yes but emotionally more so,” DiCaprio once said according to the Evening Standard.

Noah Rothman produces through Canopy Partners, with Marc Goldberg and Sarah Gabriel producing via Signature Films.

Well these are a lot of fun, and they popped up online mere minutes after this column was published last week. Better late than never. Florida Man appears to be a kind of Midnight Run caper, set in the craziness of the Sunshine State. Netflix's in-house graphic-design team have whipped up this series of hand-drawn posters in the style of 20th-century pulp-novel series. Not all of them are winners (See "Corn") but there is a kind of assembly-line, lowest-common-denominator aspect of these designs (with a side of naughtiness) that just hits the of nostalgic sweet spot. To these eyes, at least -- simpler days,...

Ghosted is an over-caffeinated action comedy romance that tries too hard to be too many things, starting out as a sweet budding rom-com before drastically morphing into a violent international spy-chase movie anchored by a constantly bickering couple. This is one of those Hollywood movies that rarely slows down to breathe, throwing everything at the wall and just hoping some of it sticks.
It is also the kind of big-scale concoction that lives or dies on the appeal of its two big movie stars. In that regard, with a lovestruck Chris Evans working against his Captain America persona, and gorgeous and smart Ana de Armas switching gears on a dime, we do have a winning combination in front of the camera no matter how much the credibility of their instant union is stretched. Director Dexter Fletcher may not have been personally party to the concept of “ghosting” before he signed on to direct “Ghosted,” but he certainly knew it didn’t involve actual ghosts. Not so for everyone else eagerly anticipating the AppleTV+ spy comedy, starring Chris Evans and Ana de Armas, and thought it was, well, about dead people.
That confusion was cleared up when the film’s first trailer and official tagline arrived in March (and then an official synopsis followed, telling us that it follows “salt-of-the-earth Cole [who] falls head over heels for enigmatic Sadie — but then makes the shocking discovery that she’s a secret agent. Before they can decide on a second date, Cole and Sadie are swept away on an international adventure to save the world”). But for awhile there, even Fletcher’s own family thought it was a love story in which at least one of the paramours was dead.

Priyanka Chopra Jonas is going from Agbo‘s Citadel to Amazon Studios for Heads of State, an upcoming action film starring John Cena and Edris Elba. Tuesday’s iTunes chart saw a surge for two A24 Oscar-winning films. However, neither of the winning Netflix titles saw its winners reenter the top 10 chart. This week also saw three different films lead the top VOD charts, which is unusual, but even weirder is none placed on all three.
“Everything Everywhere All at Once” ($19.99) and “The Whale” ($4.99) jumped to #1 and 2 at iTunes, a platform that’s typically quick to reflect increased interest. The films also climbed to second and third at Google Play, more likely reflecting weekend pre-Oscars interest.
Google Play has “Dragon Ball Hero: Super Hero” on top, while Vudu showed “80 for Brady” as #1. Among the chart leaders, “Everything” and “Dragon Ball” made one other list, while “Brady” is only on Vudu’s. These differences can be accounted for by various factors: Vudu elevates PVOD releases with its revenue-based rankings, Google Play lags a few days behind,...

(Welcome to Best Actor Ever, an ongoing series where we explore the careers and performances of the greatest performers to ever grace the screen.)
We're only six articles into this series, and I've already violated my critic's creed by furthering one of the most egregious filmmaking fallacies in existence. While I stand wholeheartedly behind my selections of Meryl Streep, Denzel Washington, Cate Blanchett, Robert De Niro, and Viola Davis, these artists are venerated for capital-a acting. They play serious, complicated people beset by demons both personal and societal. Critics expect them to dazzle us, to shed inspiring or unsettling light on the human condition. For too many years, they did not expect them to make us laugh.
When Streep, after a decade-plus of electrifying dramatic performances, appeared in the 1989 dark comedy "She-Devil" opposite TV superstar Roseanne Barr, many critics felt she was slumming. Ditto De Niro in Martin Brest's 1988 buddy-comedy "Midnight Run.

Can you imagine a world without "The Dana Carvey Show?" To be fair, you probably can, as the ABC series only lasted for a meager eight episodes during the spring of 1996. While the show itself has gained a cult status over the decades, the real legacy of the series isn't about the show's impact on pop culture, but rather its bringing together of talent that would soon go on to impact pop culture.

Over the years, cinema has featured multiple actors who share so much chemistry that they wind up appearing in several movies together. The late 60s and early 70s saw Paul Newman and Robert Redford team up for timeless roles in The Sting and Butch Cassidy And The Sundance Kid. While the not-too-distant past has seen the likes of Bruce Willis and Samuel L. Sometimes, comedians tell stories that are much too funny to be true. Surely no one's life actually contains mind-boggling hijinks, quotable one-liners, and situations that so carefully toe the line between hilarious and life-threatening? And yet, Bert Kreischer walks among us, living a life that sounds more akin to an R-rated comedy than reality. Which is why it makes so much sense that his stories keep getting grafted onto the big screen.
Here's where it started: when Kreischer was in college in the late '90s, he became the topic of a Rolling Stone article that dubbed him "the top partyer at the Number One Party School." That story not only gave him the push he needed to move to NYC and pursue a career in stand-up comedy but also served as the inspiration for National Lampoon's Van Wilder. Just like that — thanks to some Hollywood magic — Kreischer's life became a movie.

Douglas Kirkland — whose celebrity portraits became nearly as iconic as the celebrities themselves, and whose photographs document some of the most important film shoots in Hollywood history — died Monday at his home in Los Angeles of natural causes. He was 88.
Kirkland made portraits of the biggest stars of the 20th and 21st centuries, including Marilyn Monroe, Frank Sinatra, Mick Jagger, Andy Warhol, Elizabeth Taylor, Charlie Chaplin, Angelina Jolie, Nicole Kidman, Leonardo DiCaprio and Brigitte Bardot.
He was the special photographer on more than 100 films including Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, 2001: A Space Odyssey, The Sound of Music, Sophie’s Choice, The Last Picture Show, Fiddler on the Roof, McCabe and Mrs. Miller, Saturday Night Fever, Alien, Midnight Run, Rain Man, The Great Gatsby, Out of Africa, Titanic and Moulin Rouge!
Kirkland never worked as an official unit photographer. His work on those films was mainly for publications such as Look and Life magazines.

Eddie Murphy turned 61 years old this year, which makes him roughly the same age John Wayne was when he played the out-to-pasture codger Rooster Cogburn in "True Grit." That film, and Wayne's subsequent Westerns, had an elegiac, one-last-ride feeling to them. Yes, the Duke's cancer was in remission at this point, but he still looked washed. When he finally succumbed to the disease on the eve of the 1980s, the book quietly closed on an outmoded era of Hollywood filmmaking. It was time. Of all the golden age stars, Wayne was uniquely unsuited to the coked-up, strip-club glitz pioneered by producing teams like Don Simpson/Jerry Bruckheimer and Jon Peters/Peter Guber.
Of all the big-screen '80s superstars, no one was more at home in this olio of excess than Eddie Murphy. His fast-talking, nimble-minded riffing was perfectly attuned to the hurtling energy of the decade's blockbuster action-comedies. Murphy...

Eddie Murphy was the surest of bets in the 1980s. At the age of 19, he single-handedly yanked "Saturday Night Live" back from the brink of cancellation after the departure of the original cast, and was all of 21 when he shot to big-screen stardom opposite Nick Nolte in Walter Hill's action-comedy classic, "48 Hrs." His second feature, "Trading Places," was also a critical and commercial hit, while his stand-up LP "Eddie Murphy: Comedian" went platinum. By 1984, Murphy was so hot, Paramount inserted him into the finished Dudley Moore comedy "Best Defense" in the hopes that he could enliven the deathly unfunny film with his ad-libbed brilliance. It didn't work, but no one held it against Murphy. The movie was just that bad.
There was no question that Murphy had turned into one of Hollywood's biggest stars overnight, but his first two hits had been two-handers. He had yet to carry a film on his own.

Casting director Bonnie Timmermann, behind such films as “Heat” and “Dirty Dancing,” finds herself on the opposite side of the camera in Venice doc “Bonnie,” directed by Simon Wallon. Brian Cox, Mark Ruffalo, Benicio del Toro and Melissa Leo are featured, while Kinology is handling sales.
“It’s almost as if she was the one being auditioned. I wanted to treat her almost like a character in a movie. She is looking straight into the eyes of the audience,” says Wallon.
Adapting to the new role was hard, Timmermann tells Variety in Venice, but luckily it came with some perks.
“Simon put me in a taxi in Times Square. There were lights and cameras everywhere, and somebody screamed: ‘Lady Gaga is in the car!’ I just struck a pose. For two minutes, I was a star.”
Timmermann has discovered plenty of stars over the years, with their old casting tapes now resurfacing in the film.

Like Eddie Murphy's dogged detective character Axel Foley, the concept for "Beverly Hills Cop" just wouldn't go away. A 1975 Hollywood traffic stop for then-Paramount Pictures president Michael Eisner, out of place driving a station wagon, inspired the idea for the movie. By the time "Beverly Hills Cop" was finally produced in 1984, Paramount had spent nearly a decade and two million dollars developing the film.
When production was set to begin, Paramount ran into some problems -- specifically, it didn't have a star or a director. Sylvester Stallone, initially slated to play Axel Foley, stepped away over disagreements about the tone of the film. (He later put many of his ideas for his version of "Beverly Hills Cop" into the 1986 action film "Cobra.") Producer Jerry Bruckheimer had his heart set on up-and-coming director Martin Brest, who had his own reservations. They soon found the perfect replacement for Stallone in Eddie Murphy,...
