Exclusive: There was a lot of noise surrounding the red state-beloved, $163M-grossing summer surprise hit, Sound of Freedom, this morning with Newsweek reporting that one of the pic’s 6,678 crowdfunders was arrested for child kidnapping by the St. Louis Metropolitan Police.
Now just to be clear, we’re talking one person who contributed an unidentified amount of money to the $5M P&a crowdfunding campaign put together by Angel Studios. The person charged, 51-year-old Fabian Marta of Chesterfield, Missouri on July 23, was not a financier of the actual feature production. Deadline confirmed the arrest with the St. Louis Metropolitan Police per Case # 2322-CR01608.
Note child kidnapping and sex trafficking, the latter subject which Sound of Freedom focuses on, are two different types of crimes.

Chicago – Two time Oscar winner Jane Fonda will grace the Windy City, as she accepts a Career Achievement Award from Cinema/Chicago, and will participate in a tribute night on Saturday, July 29th, 2017. The event will take place at the Radisson Blu Aqua Hotel, and will feature an on-stage conversation with Fonda, moderated by Richard Roeper of the Chicago Sun-Times. The evening is sponsored by Sage Private Wealth Group, and includes partners American Airlines, Sound Investment Av, Chloe Wine Collection and Wansas Tequila.
Jane Fonda is part of Hollywood royalty, the daughter of Henry Fonda and the sister of Peter Fonda. She studied at Vassar College and was a member of the Actors Studio in New York City, before making her film debut in “Tall Story” (1959). The 1960s were an ingenue era for her, as she appeared in “Sunday in New York” (1963), “Cat Ballou” (1965) and “Barefoot in the Park” (1967). She...

The laid-back, plot challenged non-violent western gets a boost in this folksy comedy about two aging cowboys with less sense than the horses they tame. Glenn Ford and Henry Fonda star together for the first time, leaving behind their older images… they’re too tender-hearted for their own good. If the sex comedy wasn’t quite so dated, Burt Kennedy’s picture might be a classic.

John McNaughton is the cult director behind such horror classics as Wild Things and Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer, and his latest film The Harvest represents his first in over a decade.
Collider exclusively premiered the trailer today, and The Harvest stars Michael Shannon and Samantha Morton as a controlling and over-protective mother and father caring for their bed-ridden, wheelchair bound son (Charlie Tahan). The boy makes a friend in a young girl (Natasha Calis), who quickly realizes that the parents’ reluctance to let their son out of the house is masking their more sinister behavior for how they care for him. Here’s the synopsis via Collider:
In his first film in nearly 15 years, the director of Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer harks back to the depravity that made his 1986 debut a horror milestone. But less based in reality, The Harvest is closer to a fairy tale from Grimm’s darkest corners.

It is that time of the year again in which we start preparing for our favourite film festival in the world. For the unfamiliar, Sound On Sight has delivered some of the best coverage of the Fantasia Film Festival since we first launched back in 2008. In the past we’ve published up to 55 reviews, dozens of features and recorded six podcasts dedicated entirely to the three and a half week long event. So be sure to come visit us again and again throughout the months of July and August, as we will surely be all over the 2014 edition. The 18th annual Fantasia International Film Festival is taking Montreal by storm, starting July 17 until August 5, 2014. They’ve just released their new poster and along with the first wave of films, and as expected, Fantasia’s programmers aren’t disappointing. Here’s the press release. Enjoy!

Death Occurred Last Night
Written by Artur Brauner, Biagio Proietti, Giorgio Scerbaneco, Duccio Tessari
Directed by Duccio Tessari
Italy, 1970
As a feature relatively hidden from mainstream film culture, Death Occurred Last Night’s only critical talk belongs to the hardcore giallo enthusiasts. Debate over whether the film fits into the strict classifications of giallo or perhaps the less-enthused poliziotteschi take prominence in these discussions, with something of a consensus drawn as “probably neither.” These insights from impassioned people looking through the lens of subgenre offer an interesting dissection that would escape those new to the club. That is, by evaluating the film purely in the context of it entering the genre canon, one must take its failures in the context of being campy, and therefore enjoyable in its own right. However, if outside the giallo realm, these camp elements are harder to defend and leave the film in a much messier position,...

The top 20. The scripts by which all others are defined and to which all others are compared. Brilliant scripts can be wordy. Brilliant scripts can be confusing. Brilliant scripts can be sweeping or intimate. This section runs the gamut, ranging from first time writers to established writing vets. It only gets better from here.

20. Easy Rider (1969)
Written by Dennis Hopper, Peter Fonda, and Terry Southern
They’ll talk to ya and talk to ya and talk to ya about individual freedom. But they see a free individual, it’s gonna scare ‘em.
This portion’s “anybody can write a film” segment comes from 1969, with a landmark film that truly doesn’t have much weight. A road movie if there ever was one, Easy Rider follows Wyatt (Peter Fonda) and Billy (Dennis Hopper) as they ride their motorcycles across the country to New Orleans for Mardi Gras.

A haggard voice breaks the darkness of the screen.
“Tell me…
“Tell me…
“Tell me about Jenny.”
If possible, the voice is simultaneously threatening and pleading. It’s demanding and mourning. Terence Stamp’s Wilson in Steven Soderbergh’s The Limey is a man out of place, a British ex-con in sunny Los Angeles trying to learn about his daughter and her death. Pete Townsend’s loud, brash guitars and Roger Daltrey’s screaming “I’m a seeker/I’m a really desperate man” sets the tone for the movie. Unlike the slick films like Out of Sight or Ocean’s Eleven, which he was doing with George Clooney, Soderbergh isn’t out to make Stamp’s Wilson look like a shining knight. Maybe it’s just Clooney’s superpower of charisma, but his characters are classic leading men, with their Cary Grant smiles and ladykiller swagger. In comparison, Stamp is an old,...

Every year, we here at Sound On Sight celebrate the month of October with 31 Days of Horror; and every year, I update the list of my favourite horror films ever made. Last year, I released a list that included 150 picks. This year, I’ll be upgrading the list, making minor alterations, changing the rankings, adding new entries, and possibly removing a few titles. I’ve also decided to publish each post backwards this time for one reason: the new additions appear lower on my list, whereas my top 50 haven’t changed much, except for maybe in ranking. I am including documentaries, short films and mini series, only as special mentions – along with a few features that can qualify as horror, but barely do.

Super-8 3D Movie Madness is sponsored by the new movie Carrie starring Chloe Grace Moritz which opens nationwide October 18 so one of the non-3D movies we’re showing is the original Carrie starring Sissy Spacek and John Travolta. We should have plenty of posters, movie passes, and other giveaway stuff from the new Carrie for all attendees.

Steven Soderbergh became the poster child for new American independent cinema in the 90′s, after winning the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival for his debut feature Sex, Lies, & Videotape. Soderbergh spent the better part of the ensuing decade, directing small idiosyncratic films, and often wearing many hats including producer, screenwriter, cinematographer and editor. Eventually the director entered into a period that saw him make commercially satisfying films; most notably Ocean’s Eleven, Erin Brockovich and Traffic, the latter of which earned him an Oscar for Best Director. Despite his box office success, Steven Sodberergh continued to experiment with such films as the ensemble piece Full Frontal, the smart and ambiguous Solaris, the low-budget Bubble and the four hour long epic, Che. There are very few filmmakers who are able to keep their feet firmly planted in the commercial world, while conserving their independent spirit. With his last...

First off, I have to tell you that this page may load slow. We're making an awful lot of calls to the Amazon Api here, and that's bound to monkey with things. If you have no idea what that means... it's shiny. Please note also that, for the same reason, you may find, depending on traffic, that not all of the Amazon details will load properly. I apologize for that, it's just the nature of the beast, and the fact that the Api wasn't really meant for such things. If you refresh, it will probably fix.
You may have heard me mention this giveaway quite a while ago, and it's taken me a long time to figure out what sort of format to put things in, and I kept added things. Eventually it became too much to really give any kind of run down on the items, so I decided...

Escape From L.A. (Blu-ray)Paramount Home Entertainment1996/Rated R/101 MinsNow Available – List Price $29.99I think it all started when in 1993 Kurt Russell and John Carpenter reunited to record an audio commentary for the laserdisc release of Escape From New York. The duo, who also collaborated on the TV movie Elvis, The Thing and Big Trouble in Little China, had not seen each other for some time, and if you've ever heard one of their audio commentaries, you know what a laugh-riot these two are when put together. 1997, the date in which the film was set was fast approaching and Russell and Carpenter seemed to have had such a great time making the picture that the time seemed right for them to try it again. With the success of the western adventure Tombstone later that year, Russell became a bankable star and soon would enjoy starring in hits like Stargate and Executive Decision.
