great comedic group
SnoopyStyle17 September 2013
Dave Foley, Bruce McCulloch, Kevin McDonald, Mark McKinney, and Scott Thompson formed the funny group in the 80s Toronto. Everybody wanted to get into Second City and then graduate to SNL. These guys decided to start a sketch show on their own.

Their combined skills generated some of the most original characters in comedy. My favorite characters include host Simon and his sidekick Hecubus, chicken lady, red hair girl, crushing your head, and when all 5 cross dress as office temps. Also Scott Thompson's "Fag!". The guys are a great group, but they didn't break down any major walls. They re-engineered, they reworked, they pushed the envelope, they just didn't invent the envelope.

Weird
zaremskya-2376113 November 2016
Warning: Spoilers
Weird Canadian humor, but great. The sketches are smart, the actors work very well with each other. Some stuff makes absolutely no sense whatsoever but is nonetheless hilarious (like worshiping a man who only wears a towel). Highly recommended if you are a fan of sketch comedy television or enjoy quirky, obscure humor (who doesn't)?

I watched this show mostly when I stayed home sick from middle school, so maybe my fever-addled brain added to the strangeness of the series, but somehow I doubt it. I've watched plenty of the show in a perfectly healthy state and it is still as bizarre as ever, yet brilliant.

It seems that not many people have seen this show and that's too bad. It will forever be held fondly in my memory as a shining example of how silly and goofy adults can be, yet still do good work.

Hit or Miss, but Hits HARD
flyawaynow11 October 2006
I love the Kids. I used to stay up late in 6th and 7th grade at my friend's house to watch them and still watch whenever I can. I have to say though, sometimes I just do not understand what they are doing. Particularly the secretary skits and the Gavin skits. But that's a small price topay for some of the best sketch comedy I have ever seen.

I made my Dad watch it once, that was a mistake. He just sort of stared with his mouth open and I think he has thought I might be gay ever since.

"People think I have got the power cause I've got the monkeys. Nope. I've got the power because I'll let the monkeys loose."

The Best Sketch Comedy Show ('nuff said)
moviekid-212 November 2000
All of all the sketch comedy shows I have seen, The Kids In The Hall is the best damn comedy show ever. The Kids are outstanding and they are very funny and it was a shame that their show ended. I love them!! I was almost into tears when the show ended. I hope that someday they can do another reunion show. The coolest sketch comedy show i have seen in years.

Best...Show...Ever.
christinecarroll12227 January 2013
1,000 words is not nearly enough to express my complete, total, and utter love and devotion for TKITH.

I started watching this show on HBO in 1988, when I was 8 years old. I would tune in an hour before my bedtime, and literally laugh my ass off. I really don't think my parents had a clue what I was watching, and thank God. This show was a huge part of my childhood, and shaped my entire view of comedy, and what is truly funny. I was never a Monty Python person. Prime time TV sucked, and made me sick to my stomach most of the time. Later on, The State and Mr. Show came close, but never achieved the absolute comedic excellence of these 5 guys.

Besides giving me hours of enjoyment, I really feel this show shaped me to be a better person in so many ways. Growing up in the burbs I had very little exposure to the true stuff of life: alternative lifestyles, class warfare, and the complete ridiculousness of pop culture. If not for this show, I may have become yet another brick in the wall of socially accepted behavior. The Kids taught me it was OK to be weird - that I didn't need to like what everyone else liked. When I first met a gay person, I didn't blink. When I got my first office job, all I could see were the businessman sketches. This show gave me a very unique perspective with which to frame reality, and I'll be forever grateful.

I guess this is a pretty serious review about a comedy show, but what the hell. I frigging love these guys.

My favorite show on TV!
hhashem8015 March 2008
This comedy series is just Hilarious in a freaky and silly way that nobody could match until this day! You will laugh the whole way through starting from the way they look, the way they talk and the topics they raise. It's hysterical. Represents not only transexuality, gays, women, couples, relationships and friendship but also deeper emotions and conflicts like being lonely, desperate, being the odd one, higher authorities, bosses and prison, dancers and shows, ego-related issues, socializing, 'being normal', belonging and mingling with others and 'being shameless, disinhibitied and open about oneself'. Imagine all this shown in the mid 80's and in the funniest way ever! Painful subjects acted by an absolutely talented crew. Funny all the way and every episode is unique. Best of all their freakiness makes you giggle in disbelief!

Never put salt in your eyes.
OtherBrotherDarryl23 September 2009
This show is exceptionally educational. I learned so much in its all-too-brief run...

Not only is God dead, but he was also very small.

When in groups of 30, women named Helen tend to develop a hive mentality.

Never fornicate with a chicken. The repercussions aren't pretty.

Axe murderers are very particular about their craft. Don't even bother suggesting a hacksaw.

Dave Foley isn't the only Dave that Bruce knows.

Dentists: they've got it ALL figured out, man.

That bad man is Hitler, and he's *beep*ing that donkey.

The difficult thing about being a mass murderer isn't the murdering part. It's the mass part. It's the pace you've gotta keep up--the sheer volume of murdering. After the first time you've killed, the second time, it's easy. The third time, you start to get cocky, so you gotta be careful. You gotta stay humble, or you make dumb mistakes.

Having the monkeys doesn't give you the power. A willingness to let them loose does.

And last, but certainly not least, I recently learned that Death is coming to town! I welcome him with open arms...

Canada's Saturday Night Live!
Sylviastel25 May 2007
I have been a Saturday Night Live fan since I first saw it as a child. So it doesn't surprise me that it's originator Lorne Michaels who is also a proud Canadian has contributed by producing a homespun all male revue featuring the hilarious, obviously homosexual Scott Thompson in the cast. Dave Foley is better here than on Newsradio because he can expand his comedy styles. There are others here are who equally important but there are no women. Instead of kids in the hall, it should be called boys in the hall. They don't mind getting dressed up as women. It's hilarious with Mark McKinney as the chicken lady, Kevin MacDonald, and Bruce McCullogh in the cast. I love Thompson playing Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth addressing Canada. I love Canada and I love seeing snow outside. God Bless Canada and this wonderful troupe of entertainers.

Funnier than before
cwells-575-68034721 May 2022
The writing is very unique and takes these wild unpredictable turns. Their sense of humor has grown to even better heights from their previous show from the 90's. It's great to see these amazing actors again, this time it's even better.

Brilliant sketch comedy
gregp5074 January 2014
These guys really took comedy to a higher level. They boldly went where few had dared before, and they carried it out brilliantly.

However, I stopped watching it after awhile, when the skits all seemed too alike, and followed a narrow range of themes. Occasionally, something original would appear, but they seemed too few and far between. For example, a skit where a family of hillbillies experiences a change of behavior in one of their brothers, after he gets kicked in the head by a horse. It was a refreshing change from the typical relationship-based sketches, but unfortunately it was in the tiny minority.

I think they were the victims of their own success in a way; they were so brilliant in their original recipe, they failed to experiment in new directions, and stayed with the same modus operandi for far too long.

Best Old Show on Comedy Central
michael_the_nermal7 January 2008
Warning! Spoilers Ahead!

Back in the day, Comedy Central was a mixed bag of mediocre 1980s comedies, Douminian-and-Ebersole-era "Saturday Night Live" reruns and twisted original shows. "Kids in the Hall," while actually originally airing on another station, was Comedy Central's best program. It's a shame that the network has elected not to rerun any more episodes.

"Kids in the Hall" can best be described as a twisted, bizarre sketch comedy that really stretched the limits of good taste and simple logic. Most of the sketches were weird commentaries on everyday moments in peoples' lives, such as sex, work in the office, and marital problems. Others involved extremely weird characters, such as a half-human, half-chicken character hopelessly looking for love; a flying pig; and a guy with an Eastern European accent whose main hobby involved squeezing his thumb and forefinger in front of people's faces in attempt to "crush their heads." A small cast of five players performed most of the skits, and put in a tremendous amount of effort to make sure they were funny. The limited cast also meant the men played women's as well as men's roles. In spite of the small cast, the show was incredibly funny, proving that sometimes in skit comedy, less is more. Marathons of "Kids in the Hall" ensured that I'd watch Comedy Central for hours on a particular day. Now I barely watch that channel except to watch new episodes of "South Park."

I highly recommend you rent old episodes of "Kids in the Hall" from the video store to see what Comedy Central was like in the old days.

It's watchable even in 2022
RandomTard9 June 2022
This show might very well be the best sketch show out there. Unfortunately it's still a sketch comedy and those are basicly all rubbish. There's too long monologues and singing. But there are surprisingly many funny moments in there as well.

Original Series Review
tonyandsilvia199420 August 2022
The problem with sketch shows, is that the hit rate tends to be very low. This is no different. For every sketch that makes you laugh, there are 20 that miss the mark completely.

I mean, how squeeze your head guy can be a recurring character through the series amazes me. He's annoying the first time you see him, never mind the following 50 times. I did like Bruce McCulloch's dweebie teenager character, and the Cops characters were funny, but on the whole I don't think time has been good to this series. It was ok to watch in small doses, but becomes annoying after a while. I've seen people call this the best sketch show ever. I'm assuming you have never seen The Fast Show.

One of the Greatest Shows Ever!
Douglas_Holmes7 July 2002
Kids in the Hall has always been one of my favorites. I remember once watching a KITH Marathon on TV that ran for something like 12 hours. It was hilarious, and I've often wondered how people could create comedy that was so completely over the edge.

Favorite skits: David Foley as a banker on a blind date with the Chicken Lady (who sounded, for the most part, amazingly normal,) and Kevin McDonald's turns as a cop suffering from terminal demoralization (particularly the one where Foley's character is getting robbed at home and doesn't seem to mind it all that much!)

Cannot believe how low of the reviews for this Legendary show!!
wewaj13 October 2021
Used to watch this legendary show all the time in the 90s as a kid and teen and we absolutely loved this show. Other than SCTV for Canada, this is hands down the funniest show Canadians have put out and then some! The show is dated, but if you haven't seen this amazing show yet do yourself a favour and check it out! Cheers all :)

Definitely worth checking this out!
collinsnetty6 January 2007
First of all, this show has me in stitches. I used to watch it years ago when it was given far too little airtime on one of the UK channels but now it's out on DVD I've bought the lot.

The 5 kids; Mark, Kevin, Dave, Bruce and Scott are not only great comedians but excellent actors, making every scene worth watching.

They do dress up for the scenes and are very convincing as women at times - surely proof of their acting skills - and they do have regularly recurring characters, such as headcrusher, Darill, Buddy Cole, cops, etc.

All in all, I'd say if you haven't watched it - try it. And when you try it, give it a chance. With any new show, you need to watch at least a few episodes to know the actors and the characters well and I'm sure you'll end up loving it as much as me!

Delighted with the Return of the Kids in the Hall
silverturquoise15 May 2022
Any time I was parched for comedic entertainment, I always wondered why the Kids in the Hall could not be found anywhere on streaming and had not returned to reclaim their throne of zany wit. Always wished they could have continued their show to the present because no one has come close to rivaling them. Delighted they are finally back with their show on Amazon Prime, with the same hilarious format.... why tinker with perfection? They are as clever as ever, roasting everything from gender reveals to preppers to Marvel to over the top cuisine.

Don't wait another 30 years! Renew the series now, PLEASE!!!

one of the very best, if not the best, t.v. show ever
ematerso12 July 2006
This is kind of after the fact but today my husband and I were talking about the Colbert Report which practically had us rolling on the floor last night with its tumbling routine. This led us quite reasonable to KITH. My husband just stumbled on it one night and we became addicts. Don't remember which season that was but our favorite episodes were the chicken, all the farmhouse spots. The QE/11 and the beaver. The office bldg trappers, the "perfect" couple & I loved the thanksgiving dinner skit. I thought all of the actors were terrific and the writing was among the best ever seen on t.v. (Seinfeld is pretty great too) Another reason KITH came to mind is our grandchildren at 14 & 10 I think. . . are ready for this show (maybe with some screening) they have such terrific senses of humor that I can't wait to watch it with them but as I said to my husband, better pad the floor with pillows as they will be falling down laughing!

They still got it
joostice15 May 2022
It still has the same style of humour. The same zany and self deprecating off the wall comedy.

I can only assume that the two bad reviews I saw must be by the Tik Tok generation of vapid 60 second content addicts.

Love Kids In The Hall and am so glad they are back.

Best show
clairekm6 March 2022
If you are looking for a strange 90s show to watch then this is the one. The best quotable lines, monologues and characters you'll see. Season 4 is the best but the best sketch is Nutty Bunnies in season 2.

Funny and Satiric.
Level_45 December 2002
Compared to other troupes, the Kids in the Hall is pure genius. They could really teach others, such as SNL and Mad TV, a lesson in being satiric and actually entertaining. The more I watch new and recent troupes the more I see what they lack.

Some people might not get some of the sketches, partly because they require taste and intelligence to get what their saying most of the time, but also that there are a lot of cultural references to the Canadian Middle-class characters they grew up around. They present these characters in a tradition of a Wayne and Shuster, SCTV, Monty Python kind of way. Although some sketches are boring, I loved the Anal Probing Aliens and the guy ordering tea; "Give me a tea, you bastard, before I beat the crap out of you."

oscarpaz-4592113 May 2022
I was able to get through 5 episodes of the " revival" before giving up. This is not a revival, it's a zombie corpse of comedy. Unfunny and stinks. Sorry guys, you're all talented, but this was awful.

Just about the funniest show ever!!
buffbabe2313 June 2001
I have watched "Saturday Night Live" for as long as I can remember and I remember seeing ads for a new Lorne Michaels show called "The Kids in the Hall". Sadly, we didn't have HBO at the time, not to mention, I was only about 4 or 5 years old when it first aired. Since then, I have seen numerous re-runs on Comedy Central, and I have to say this show is so much better than "Saturday Night Live". I'm sorry that I never got the chance to see the full episodes on HBO. Even so, I am very glad that I have gotten to see what I have, but unfortunately Comedy Central has cut it down to only one episode of "KITH" per day. Hopefully this is just for the summer, as "Kids in the Hall" is a wonderful, smart, and of course just about the funniest show that I've ever seen. It gets a 10 out of 10 from me! I'll keep watching for as long as it's on television.

The Overlooked Kings of Sketch Comedy
sparky73620 July 2002
From what I know, there have been 5 great sketch comedy shows; Monty Python Flying Circus, Saturday Night Live, Mad TV, Second City TV, and The Kids in the Hall. I haven't seen Second City or Flying Circus, so I won't compare them. Saturday Night Live, good, but repetitive. Mad TV, great, but it's new and SNL was great when it was new. Then there's KITH. This show started 5 careers, 3 of which didn't go too far after the show ended, and one of the sucesses does mainly voice work, so his face isn't well known. One of my favorite things about this show: all male cast. that wasnt meant to sound sexist. what i meant was it pushed the "Kids" to new levels trying to potrait women. But this is one thing i'm sure of, there has been no better sketch comedy character than Gavin. I love his explaination on Krazy GlueT. Everytime I see an episode with Gavin, I turn up the volume, and if there's anyone else around, i make them get quiet. I'ts sort of a worship thing. Too bad he wasnt in more episodes, and too bad Bruce McCulloch didnt become more famous And as the grave stone says at the end of the last episode: The Kids in the Hall TV Show

1989-1994
