Exclusive: Oscar nominee Felicity Jones (The Theory of Everything) will star with Bridgerton actor Jonathan Bailey in comedy Maria, we can reveal.
Independent Entertainment will launch sales in Cannes on the project, which hails from Benediction and Small Axe producer Emu Films. Simon Amstell is writing and directing.
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and On The Basis Of Sex actress Jones will star in the title role as a young woman with a history of running from reality. Struggling to accept her age, her boyfriend’s love and her father’s indifference, Maria spots an opportunity to feel young, free and desirable at her father’s wedding, where she meets Raffy, her new stepbrother. Their obvious, if inconvenient, sexual chemistry is made worse by the news that her father has been diagnosed with a terminal illness.
Jason Isaacs (Harry Potter) will play Maria’s father. Bailey will play Maria’s boyfriend Eddy.

Rarely one finds a friend on the Criterion Channel—discounting the parasitic relationship we form with filmmakers, I mean—but it’s great seeing their March lineup give light to Sophy Romvari, the <bias>exceptionally talented</bias> filmmaker and curator whose work has perhaps earned comparisons to Agnès Varda and Chantal Akerman but charts its own path of history and reflection. It’s a good way to lead into an exceptionally strong month, featuring as it does numerous films by Pier Paolo Pasolini, the great Japanese documentarian Kazuo Hara, newfound cult classic Arrebato, and a number of Criterion editions.
On the last front we have The Age of Innocence, Bull Durham, A Raisin in the Sun, The Celebration, Merrily We Go to Hell, and Design for Living. There’s always something lingering on the watchlist, but it might have to wait a second longer—March is an opened floodgate.

With Academy Award-winning “Roma” and “Gravity” director Alfonso Cuarón already a fan, Charlotte Colbert’s feature debut “She Will” will no doubt similarly impress audiences when it premieres at the Locarno Film Festival this week.
A psychological horror, the film stars Alice Krige (“Star Trek: First Contact”) as Veronica, a double mastectomy patient seeking respite at a rural Scottish healing retreat who soon finds herself able to mete out revenge via her dreams.
“’She Will’ sits in the tradition of great psychological horror films,” Cuarón said of the work. “The images, symbolism and layers within the story slowly convey a metaphysical ecstasy which leaves one questioning long after the film is finished. Charlotte Colbert has crafted a powerful debut.”
Krige is joined on-screen by Kota Eberhardt (“X-Men: Dark Phoenix”), Malcolm McDowell (“Bombshell”) and Rupert Everett (“My Best Friend’s Wedding”).

Before we bid the month of April farewell, we still have one final batch of Blu-ray and DVD releases coming our way this Tuesday to look forward to. Scream Factory is set to release a double dose of classic horror with The Brain and Tarantula, and Vinegar Syndrome is keeping busy with their terror-inducing trio of titles: The Corruption of Chris Miller, Grandmother’s House, and Darkroom.
Kino Lorber is also giving Hannibal (2001) the 4K treatment this week, and if you happened to miss them during their limited releases, both The Hole in the Ground and Level 16 are very much worth your time.
Other Blu-ray and DVD releases for April 30th include City of the Vampires, Deadly Crush, Emanuelle and Francoise, Death Warmed Up, and Motel Mist.
The Brain
Imagine a pulsating mass of gray matter, expanding in size and strength as it takes control of human minds and devours human bodies.

It was a legendarily expensive action vehicle for Kevin Costner in 1995, but Waterworld originally began life as a subtly different story...
Tales of Waterworld's making have long since passed into legend. You've probably read about the long and difficult shoot on the open seas around Hawaii, about the soaring costs, the sinking sets and the increasingly fractious relationship between the two Kevins - director Kevin Reynolds and star Kevin Costner. You've probably heard about a pre-Buffy Joss Whedon being flown in to revise the script, and how, getting wind of all this, the Hollywood press started calling Waterworld names like "Fishtar and "Kevin's Gate".

Walt Disney Pictures released their new musical/fantasy flick "Into The Woods" into theaters this past Thursday. I just checked it out, and thought it was pretty entertaining and more comical than I thought it would be. It stars: Tracey Ullman, Frances de la Tour, Johnny Depp, Lucy Punch, Meryl Streep, Chris Pine, Emily Blunt, Simon Russell Beale, Tammy Blanchard, James Corden, Anna Kendrick, Christine Baranski, Billy Magnussen, Lilla Crawford, Daniel Huttlestone, MacKenzie Mauzy, Richard Glover, Joanna Riding, and Annette Crosbie. The movie revolved a couple of different characters and plotlines that all came together, full circle, towards the end. We saw Cinderella, wishing she could attend the King's festival, but instead, was treated like crap by her evil step sisters. Meanwhile, the baker and his wife wanted to have kids, but found out they were secretly cursed by the witch who had a unpleasant past with the baker's father.

The clip is titled, "To Grandmother's House," and gives us a look at Little Red Riding Hood, singing about how she's about to take off for into the woods to hit up grandma's house. She's also trying to round up a bunch of food too. Check it out, below. The movie stars: Tracey Ullman, Frances de la Tour, Johnny Depp, Lucy Punch, Meryl Streep, Chris Pine, Emily Blunt, Simon Russell Beale, Tammy Blanchard, James Corden, Anna Kendrick, Christine Baranski, Billy Magnussen, Lilla Crawford, Daniel Huttlestone, MacKenzie Mauzy, Richard Glover, Joanna Riding and Annette Crosbie. In the new flick, the plotline presents a modern twist on the beloved Brothers Grimm fairy tales, intertwining the plots of a few choice stories and exploring the consequences of the characters' wishes and quests.

We're just two months away from the end of the year and the start of top ten list season. If you're a hardcore movie nerd like me, you look forward to December with a mixture of anticipation and dread. Making a top ten list is super fun but it's also super daunting. There are so many movies to see, and only so many hours in a day.
Seeing every single movie released this calendar year is impossible, so you've got to pick your battles. That's where Countdown to Top Ten 2K11 comes in. The goal of this column is simple: as I catch up with the 2011 movies I missed in order to fill out my own top ten list, I'll tell you whether or not you need to catch up with them as well before making your top ten list. Each installment will feature my thoughts on the movie, a sampling of other critics' reactions,...

Mountain of the Flesheaters The people behind Mountain of the Flesheaters, which is getting set to start filming pretty soon, have just released a cast list with some of the actors involved in the project. One word that comes to mind when seeing all these names is "Wow!". Even if the film fails from a story standpoint (which we hope it doesn't), at least there will be this huge cast to help keep your interest. Some of the names that appear in this cast are iconic horror actors that fans everywhere grew up watching mixed with some of the brightest new talents in the indie horror field. Here's some of the actors and actresses that will be appearing in the film:
-Debra Lamb (Stripped to Kill & Beverly Hills Vamp)
-Linnea Quigley (The Return of the Living Dead & Silent Night, Deadly Night)

Dance of the Damned Coming up with a title that almost no one has heard of is a difficult task, since I am an advocate for the little known or indie horror film. There's so many films that I could mention.... Night Warning, The Midnight Hour, The Power, Massacre at Central High, Grandma's House, Eyes of Fire, Paperhouse, The Black Waters of Echo's Pond, Storage and so on and so on. There's just been so many titles that deserve special mention or special praise that have been overlooked over the years. So trying to figure out one title that single handily deserved this distinction was a tough task. However, I think I've found a title that's most worthy as it's a film that took risks, it took chances and offered up something completely unique and different that the genre really hadn't seen before. So I give you.....

It's off to grandmother's house we go as the luscious looking Red Riding Hood is ready to hand deliver a basket full of tweener horror from the director of the original Twilight.
Amanda Seyfried, Shiloh Fernandez, Max Irons, Michael Hogan, Julie Christie, Virginia Madsen, Lukas Hass, and Gary Oldman star in this Catherine Hardwicke big-screen adaptation of the fairy tale.
Synopsis
In Red Riding Hood, Amanda Seyfried plays Valerie, a beautiful young woman torn between two men. She is in love with a brooding outsider, Peter (Shiloh Fernandez), but her parents have arranged for her to marry the wealthy Henry (Max Irons). Unwilling to lose each other, Valerie and Peter are planning to run away together when they learn that Valerie's older sister has been killed by the werewolf that prowls the dark forest surrounding their village. I don't think there is another movie we want to see more than Drew Goddard and Joss Whedon's Cabin In The Woods! Is it because it's some brilliant piece of work that we think will be ground breaking for the horror community? No! We are just so damn tired of waiting on the film that at this point, its like that room you're not supposed to go into in Grandma's house, we just need a glimpse! And Sony may finally give us that chance....
According to our friends at Variety, Sony Pictures are in negotiations to release and distribute some of MGM's catalog (which consists of over 4,000+ titles). Obviously our horror hearts are set on Cabin In The Woods which was supposed to be released in 3D. The good news is the film is in the can waiting on the shelf to be released so if Sony does pull...

I often wonder why international posters are cooler than the ones here in the States. Maybe the MPAA has something to do with it? I dunno... anyways, inside you'll find the Spanish one sheet for Caperucita Roja, or Red Riding Hood, the Catherine Hardwicke-directed "Little Red Riding Hood" tale that looks more like a Twilight sequel than makes me comfortable. It features a stunning look at star Amanda Seyfried, who takes a break from her journey to Grandma's house. David Leslie Johnson (Orphan) wrote the script, which is set in a village haunted by a werewolf. It is a Gothic retelling of the "Little Red Riding Hood story", with a teenage love triangle (with star Shiloh Fernandez) at its center.

Love him or hate him, one thing is for sure: Director David DeCoteau is a legend in the horror entertainment field. That can't be denied. He's the man responsible for 80's camp classics such as Nightmare Sisters and Sorority Babes in the Slimeball Bowl-o-Rama. Sorority Babes In The Slimeball Bowl-o-Rama gathered a once in a lifetime B movie cast including Linnea Quigley (The Return of the Living Dead), Brinke Stevens (Grandma's House), Michelle Bauer (Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers), Robin Stille (The Slumber Party Massacre), Hal Havins (Night of the Demons), and George 'Buck' Flower (They Live). While Sorority Babes was one of the most downright fun horror films of the 80's, another element stood out about the film, one that would go on to shape and define David DeCoteau's career. See, David DeCoteau cast this complete unknown named Andras Jones in the lead role. Right off the bat, you could...

Seeing how the teen horror slasher "The Slumber Party Massacre", which starred Robin Stille and Michelle Michaels, was a big hit for New World Pictures, Roger Corman was looking to create that same success yet again after he developed Concorde Pictures. Thus was born Sorority House Massacre which also incorporated elements from the popular Halloween franchise. Sorority House Massacre continued on with the tradition of a female director (Carol Frank), and an ensemble of female leads including Wendy Martel, Pamela Ross and Nicole Rio. However, the standout was Angela O' Neill. While the others were appealing and created distinct personalities for each of their characters, Angela O' Neill had this almost ethereal like presence. She wasn't this big, flashy diva actress. She was a bit more on the quite and reserved side, but there was just something about her that made it so that her presence filled the screen and...

Shakespearean actor who played many familiar roles on film and television
Few actors can claim to have played most of Shakespeare's clowns and made some of them funny, but Geoffrey Hutchings, who has died of meningitis aged 71, did just that. An associate artist with the Royal Shakespeare Company, he played Launce, Bottom, Feste, one of the Dromios and even the impossible Lavache in Trevor Nunn's great "Crimean war" All's Well That Ends Well, with Peggy Ashcroft making her RSC farewell as the Countess of Rousillon. Hutchings brought an individual quality of asperity and crackle to everything he did, and was noted early on as a character actor of uncommon personality: small, slight, but always ferocious, he was like a terrier with a dangerous bark.
He grasped Autolycus, for instance, that wandering snapper-up of unconsidered trifles, in Ronald Eyre's 1981 The Winter's Tale at Stratford-upon-Avon, and transformed him into a...
