Stylish Dream-Porno
SMK-428 October 1998
Whenever hardcore pornos are attempting to tell some story, or portray some character, they face a major dilemma. How on Earth can they justify the amount of *****ing the viewers come to expect and pay for, and at the same time keep the story and the characters believable? Usually, this just does not work.

But this does not mean that it never works. There is the odd film here and there in which the writers did find a plot device for justifying or even requiring frequent fornication. In Night Dreams the sex is not really happening, it is dreamt by our heroine (Tori Welles) who is frigid when awake and, er, hedonistic in her dreams. Two psychiatrists observe her dreams using a special dream-watching machine. Needless to say, we join them.

Unfortunately, Andrew Blake is a lousy story teller, and so he does not develop this idea much further. Blake's strength is style, waggonloads of style, although one can easily blame him for overdoing it in some of his pictures. In Night Dreams he keeps the balance.

Watchable and stylish.

Blake's Best
Nodriesrespect27 July 2008
Approaching his 20th anniversary in the adult industry, former Playboy photographer turned supremely stylized hardcore pornographer "Andrew Blake" (whose real name is Paul Nevitt) is generally considered as being in a class of his own. He may also be the sole fornication filmmaker whose increasingly idiosyncratic body of work so strongly divides viewer opinion. Simply put, you either love or hate him, leaving no room for middle ground. Taking his avowed inspiration from the likes of Helmut Newton, Blake's fashion plate scenarios will either come to define the height of sophisticated eroticism or plunge you into the depths of dirty movie boredom, depending on which camp you belong to. I will be the first to admit that I'm no unconditional admirer of Blake's, finding it downright impossible to sit through most of his later endeavors – basically, anything he has done from 1997 onwards, starting with the Jamie "Dahlia Grey" Dion showcases – in a single screening. On the plus side, his aesthetics have influenced a large number of "lesser" yet infinitely preferable pornographers no end (including Michael Ninn, Cameron Grant and Nicks Steele and Orleans) and none of the adult actresses have ever looked more pristinely picture perfect than when photographed by Blake, whose uncanny ability to make them look like unattainable goddesses rather than skilled sex workers may paradoxically prove the greatest deal breaker of them all.

Though he has made many more elaborate and, according to his fan base, "better" films than his celebrated carnal debut NIGHT TRIPS (his subsequent HOUSE OF DREAMS and HIDDEN OBSESSIONS being the most likely contenders), I feel he has failed to improve on what was to become his standard recipe of beautiful girls getting down but not too dirty in luxurious surroundings. As a matter of fact, in terms of plot this probably stands as one of his (relatively, of course !) strongest achievements, sort of a fang-less variation on Stephen Sayadian's dark 'n' disturbing NIGHTDREAMS. Predictably copping the AVN Best Film Award for an otherwise mostly barren 1990, it also famously if rather more surprisingly won the Silver Award in the non-theatrical release section at Houston's 1989 WorldFest, invoking the wrath of Hollywood royalty Lauren Bacall who had co-starred in one of the rival entries, the Ruth Rendell-based TREE OF HANDS, eliciting the classic comment that she wasn't aware it was "that kind of film festival" !

Then reigning superstar Tori Welles plays a woman "plagued" by erotic nightmares and seeking help for such from psychiatrist Randy Spears and his glamorous assistant Porsche Lynn. They hook her up to a "revolutionary" device (aren't they always ?) able to visually monitor her dreams, the doc and nurse drifting in 'n' out – how appropriate ! – of these fantasies as bystanders and eventual participants. That's the premise leading into the film's various perfectly realized sexual set-ups. Welles watches Dutch duo Marc De Bruin and Tanja De Vries (the latter sometimes simply credited as "Lola") make the most out of their US holiday permit as they sensuously cavort on her lawn and stars in a blue-tinged rump roast of her own with ever plentiful Peter North (formerly gay porn's "Matt Ramsey") for an encore. Sepia's the tone of choice for interracial intimacy between big-haired blond diva Victoria Paris and sculptural Ray Victory. Best of show turns out to be the trio of ladies who lunch – upon each other, that is ! – involving Welles, a silver-wigged Lynn and Vivid's former BRAT Jamie Summers in the first of several comebacks, a decidedly choreographed yet still scorching Sapphic threesome that could serve as Blake's signature scene, one image suitable for framing right after another, further enhanced by the magnificent musical accompaniment of Rock Hard, who would acquire greater fame on the gay side of the industry. No prizes for guessing that the good doctor's hands on treatment of this damsel in distress ultimately brings about her cure, though viewers will probably be scratching their heads as to what the problem was in the first place !

For me personally, this is as good as Blake ever got, exploiting his obvious strength in terms of visuals and restricting narrative to a bare minimum. Naysayers might still complain that it looks like a pornographic perfume ad but then that's the nature of this particular beast. At least as far as heat's concerned, it's head and shoulders above future achievements that got increasingly bogged down in primping 'n' preening of its glamorized beyond recognition models, for surely the term "actresses" could no longer be applied in those cases. Welles' warmth was not yet airbrushed out of existence at this early stage of Blake's career, one significantly celebrated by those who proudly profess not to care for porn.

Beautiful movie
Louise-166 July 2001
This is a very nice movie stylistically, one that is somewhat different from other porn movies. The settings are unusual - one is a staircase. The various sex scenes that are dreamt by Tori Welles are shot in different color filters. During the sex scenes, you don't hear the actors - you only hear music. The drawback is that you actually have to be watching the TV (or know the story very well!) to know what's going on, but it's worth it to me. My husband and I have used this movie as a sensuous mood inducer on many occasions, and it gave us at least one idea for experimentation. Very artsy, but if you're into that sort of thing as we are, the experience will be rewarding.

(Better than the sequel too, we thought.)

tori welles is hot!!!
davemanddd0354614 February 2003
i absolutely loved this movie, probably one of the best pornos from the period of late 80's to early 90's. tori welles has never looked more delicious as she practically dominates the whole film since all of the sex scenes take place in her mind. i still don't see what the problem was. it's not like her dreams kept her from sleeping. we should all be so lucky to dream such vivid sex scenes. recommendation - watch it.

I liked the lesbian scene.
Aaron137513 November 2010
I do not know, for the most part this film kind of missed the mark to me. That is not surprising though as an adult film such as this will always appeal to people in different ways. What appeals to some people might not appeal to another. This one had some good stuff in it and for the most part an attractive lead girl, but I just did not really get all that much enjoyment out of it. My favorite scene is the lesbian one with the very cute blond, that one for some reason appealed to me. The rest of the sex was mildly disappointing. Probably due to the fact that for the most part during the sex you heard virtually no female moaning. No, in this one you heard the light music soundtrack which sounded more like it was made for a videotaped aquarium. I liked the scenes of the main girl masturbating too, but these scenes were short and not really long enough to get the blood flowing. This is also to my tastes, I do not really care for seeing guys all that much in a porn film anyways. I prefer seeing woman do things to themselves to be honest, sure sometimes it is nice to see a gal get, well you know, but I do not like having to watch a guy get oral performed on him. This one though did have that awesome lesbian scene which to me was the highlight.

List of Sex Scenes for Night Trips
shrmnr21 June 2005
Warning: Spoilers
This is the most stylish adult film I have ever seen. Not only are the sets nice, the actors hot and the sex even hotter but the score is superb for adult features and the mood is well conveyed. The movie starts with Tori Welles masturbating while she dreams of erotic encounters. Once the plot is set (a dream watching machine has been hooked up to Tori while psychologists Prosche Lynn and Randy Spears observe) we get on with the sex scenes. There is non-eventful M/F between Marc De Bruin and Tanya deVries in which Tori watches; while both are very attractive, there is not much heat. The scene ends with a weak facial. Scene two is an explosive scene between Tori and Peter North. Several positions, most showcasing North's massive member, and ending with a North trademark facial on Welles. During the end of the scene one of the machine's sensors comes loose. Porsche Lynn does not want to lose the image so she re-attaches the sensor. The touch of another woman sends Tori in an F/F/F involving Welles, Jamie Summers and Tanya deVries which is scorching hot. Summers didn't do many movies during this stage in her career and most were girl/girl scenes. She shows why The Brat series of films were successful. When Porsche sees the results of her touch on her own dream machine she joins Tori in a dual masturbation scene. Scene four is a visually pleasing M/F with Victoria Paris and Ray Victory. Their beautiful bodies are contrasted even more by the use of black and white filming for the black and white tryst while Welles watches. Tori then stumbles upon a M/F encounter that features two masked lovers. The scene is pretty standard and aside from minimal contact, Welles only watches. Once the scene concludes we are confronted with the unmasking of the pair; Lynn and Spears. Welles feels betrayed and unhooks herself from the machine. A final encounter with Welles and Spears is the finale and Welles gives it her typical outstanding effort.

While the style is wonderful, the story gets lost. This is typical for an adult film but this particular movie almost transcended this typical pitfall. The three middle scenes (Welles & North; the three way girl on girl; and Paris/Victory) are definitely the meat of the movie with the others just taking up space; albeit attractive space they just lack the electricity of the others.

What dreams are made of
Prismark1020 May 2018
Night Trips tries to be a stylish erotic porn film, with the female stars looking glamorous. It almost aspires to be pornographic in an arty way.

The basic story is Tori Welles is hooked up in a dream watching machine as she is studied by two psychologists.

They observe her fantasies in a dream like state and decide that Tori's erotiscm needs further probing.

The film has less of the grinding noises as it is accompanied by a new age soundtrack. This sex film might not be down and dirty but at least director Andrew Blake tries a different approach.

I love this movie!!!
Eziou19 December 2013
I loved this movie. I loved the scene with Victoria Paris and Victory Ray in black and white. The close up of Victoria bent over and Ray hitting it from behind is my favorite. I wish the money shot was better. I think the money shot would have been better had Ray been standing up. Victoria had such a hot body in 1989. I love lady's with hour glass bodies! Tori had a hot body too in 1989. Tori and Peter North's scene was great. Of course Peter makes a mess of Tori' s face, but what else is new. The first scene of the movie was not all that great. The all girl scene was awesome, it makes a guy want to get in the middle of that action!

This is a great movie!!!! Watch it!!!
