The bond between American and Italian costumers has been a strong and long-lasting one that has contributed to some of the best-looking movies ever made, says acclaimed Italian costume designer Carlo Poggioli. “We are the country that has won the most Oscars, both for set design and costumes, after the Americans,” says Poggioli, head of Italy’s costume and production designers guild. “The Italian flag stands high.”
That bond will be celebrated with a master class series of panels set for Oct. 31, Nov. 13 and Dec. 5 at the City University of New York, in which Piera Detassis, president of Italy’s David di Donatello Awards — the country’s equivalent of the Oscars — will lead a discussion among Italian designers Poggioli and Milena Canonero (“The Grand Budapest Hotel”) and Americans Ann Roth (“The English Patient”) and Donna Zakowska (“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”).

Among the movies available during the long hours of my flight from London to Sydney was Rob Marshall's Nine, a reworking of Fellini's 8½. As I flicked back and forth through the menu, I caught glimpses of Penélope Cruz in a flounced red baby-doll nightie with a built-in push-up bra – could we have worn such things in the 1960s? – and Sophia Loren looking like an Aztec mask, and Daniel Day-Lewis getting in and out of bed with his trousers on, but I was not tempted. I will not have my Fellini rewritten by Arthur Kopit, who wrote the musical, or Anthony Minghella or Michael Tolkin, who wrote the screenplay.
In the summer of 1975, Paola Roli, one of the casting directors for Fellini's Casanova, suggested that he try me for the part of the giantess. I was a fan from way back, so, though I didn't want the part, and...

In its ongoing drive to consolidate the Italian production marketplace, Rome's Cinecitta Studios has acquired one of its main cross-town rivals, Roma Studios, founded in the 1960s by Italian producer Dino De Laurentiis. For 30 million ($37 million), Cinecitta acquired the 42-year-old studio-- previously known as Dinocitta -- located just outside of Rome on the Via Pontina. Roma studios, home to classic Italian films like Federico Fellini's The Voice of the Moon, comprises five stages totaling 110,000 square feet in area. "For me, (the hope) was always that the future of the studio would be if it became a European hub where production companies could move into preproduction," said Carol Andre Smith, an executive member of the board of directors and marketing adviser at Cinecitta. "And Rome is the biggest cinema city in the world after Hollywood; and people forget that."...
