‘Ghost In the Shell’ Is Pretty Except When It’s NotEye-catching designs and an intriguing performance by Scarlett Johansson aren’t quite enough.
It’s a new world, one where cybernetic enhancements are the norm to aid people in everything from vision and movement to the quicker absorption of alcohol, and Major Killian (Scarlett Johansson) is the shiniest toy on the shelf. With a seemingly endless amount of streaming options — not only the titles at our disposal, but services themselves — we’ve taken it upon ourselves to highlight the titles that have recently hit platforms. Every week, one will be able to see the cream of the crop (or perhaps some simply interesting picks) of streaming titles (new and old) across platforms such as Netflix, iTunes, Amazon, and more (note: U.S. only). Check out our rundown for this week’s selections below.
Anomalisa (Charlie Kaufman and Duke Johnson)
Charlie Kaufman, the writer behind Being John Malkovich and Adaptation, teams up with animator Duke Johnson to create a complex emotional drama starring lifelike puppets. The premise is riddled with existential dread of modern-day life, presented uniquely through Kaufman’s idiosyncratic point-of-view. For protagonist and self-help author Michael Stone (voiced soulfully by David Thewlis), everyone around him has the same voice (thanks to...

The live-action Ghost In The Shell got its unveiling in Tokyo last week. Here's what we learned...
Pitched somewhere between a mournful chant and a military march of drums, Kenji Kawai’s soundtrack for 1995’s Ghost In The Shell cast an unforgettably eerie pall over the entire movie. The makers of the new, live-action take on Ghost In The Shell clearly recognise the power of Kawai’s music because, as the lights go down on the movie’s Tokyo unveiling event, the composer and musician himself is here to thrash out a live version of his score.

The last year has been great for Kitano Takeshi fans. While the director's recent output hasn't exactly set the world on fire outside of his two Outrage films, home video collectors have encountered a wealth of treasures as his early films have become available on Blu-ray for the first time in 2016. Most of these features came to us by way of UK specialist label Third Window Films, who've previous released Hana-bi, Kikujiro, Dolls, and A Scene at the Sea, and continue their winning record with Kids Return. However, now there's another label helping to fill in the gaps, Film Movement with their recent releases of Kitano's first two directorial features, Violent Cop and Boiling Point. Are they worth the upgrade? Check out our thoughts...

Today, New York independent distributor Film Movement Classics unveils the brand-new poster for Takeshi Kitano’s 1990 film “Boiling Point,” designed exclusively for retrospective screenings by comic book artist Benjamin Marra. Marra designed the film’s one-sheet with a colorful, stylized illustration highlighting baseball and the Yakuza. Check it out below.

The film follows Masaki (Yûrei Yanagi), an unassuming gas station attendant who is a member of the losing sandlot baseball team The Eagles. After he runs afoul of a belligerent yakuza, The Eagles manager, an ex-yakuza himself, gets involved, setting Masaki on a haphazard quest for guns in Okinawa with his friend Kazuo (Duncan). There they are befriended by the extremely eccentric yakuza boss Takashi (Takeshi “Beat” Kitano), leading them straight into the tangled web of organized crime.

I’m going to let you in on a little secret. Every day, once a day, give yourself a present. Don’t plan it, don’t wait for it, just let it happen. It could be a new shirt at the men’s store, a catnap in your office chair, or two cups of good, hot black coffee. Or, it could be a listen to this Lynchian mixtape inspired by the massive cast list released for the new iteration of Twin Peaks, which has a surprising number of musicians along with actors.
This list includes, but is not limited to, Trent Reznor, Eddie Vedder, Sky Ferreia, and Sharon Van Etten, along with actors who also dabble in music such as Jennifer Jason Leigh, Monica Bellucci, and Richard Chamberlain. The songs are tailor-fitted to the mood of the show, a combination of the eerie, sad, dark, joyous, and full of life.

I interviewed Takeshi Kitano, aka "Beat" Takeshi, in spring of 2001 regarding "Brother," his first film shot on American soil. Kitano is arguably, still, the biggest star in Japan, one whose influence crosscuts virtually all areas of media.
Memories: Kitano was surrounded by a small entourage of Japanese men, one of whom was his interpreter. He was formal and stoic in his interaction with me, but never unfriendly. As Sofia Coppola so deftly portrayed in "Lost in Translation," the English to Japanese process of translating can often be time-consuming for what amounts to seemingly little that's been said. Kitano rarely made eye contact or smiled, although when he would laugh softly, a crooked grin would form on one side of his mouth, the right. The other striking thing about Kitano's appearance was a tic, or slight tremor, that would appear on the left side of his face, the after-effect of a...

Gotham Season 1, Episode 21: ‘The Anvil or the Hammer’
Written by Jordan Harper
Directed by Paul Edwards
Aired Mondays at 8pm (Et) on Fox
The penultimate episode of Gotham superbly closes the Ogre arc and sets the table for what appears to be an exciting, grand season finale. The last couple of episodes have shown Gordon shaken and dead set on taking down the serial killer the Ogre, as he has threatened to victimize his loved one. The discovery that the loved one in question is his former fiancé only makes him more resolute in his undertaking. This episode does an excellent job at showing how determined Gordon is and the wear it takes on him, with Leslie and Bullock reminding him that he needs to take a break before he burns out, but Gordon doesn’t let up. Ben McKenzie is in top form in this episode, as he...

Another 25 unsung greats come under the spotlight, as we provide our pick of the underappreciated films of 1995...
The year covered in this week's underrated movie rundown was significant for a number of reasons. It was the year that saw the release of Toy Story - the groundbreaking movie that would cement Pixar's reputation as an animation studio, and set the tempo for CG family movies for the next 18 years and counting. It was the year that saw James Bond (played by Pierce Brosnan for the first time) emerge for GoldenEye after a six-year break. It was also the year of Michael Mann's Heat, Dogme 95, and the moment where Terry Gilliam scored a much-deserved hit with 12 Monkeys.
As ever, we're focusing on a few of the lesser-known films from this particular year, and we've had to think carefully about what's made the cut and what hasn't.

Will and Sonny comes into the pub and discuss Sami’s upcoming bail hearing, and Will says, ‘I’m going to go say hi to … Grandma Cowlick?” Is it just me, or is Chandler mumbling his lines lately?
As he exits, Brent walks in carrying more plans for the coffeeboozehouse. Sonny thanks him profusely, and brent says he’s looking forward to his vacation exploring Bryce Canyon. has Sonny thought any more about joining him, Brent asks, as Will comes back just in time to hear.
Alert! Jj in a tight tank top! He comes in just in time to stop Abigail from becoming an Afterschool Special. He grabs the angel dusted doughnut out of her hand, and says, “Um … I sneezed on it!” That’s some quick thinking there.

Here at Film School Rejects, we take our features game very, very seriously. All The Right Moves Sneak Peek: Taja Reaches Her Boiling Point
When you gather a bunch of creative perfectionist types in a room together and tell them to put together a fully functioning company, things are bound to get a little dicey. You have so many egos that have to be appeased and even more different ideas and directions that even the most patient leader might be overwhelmed by. Especially in the early stages of bringing together a show/company/production, there might be a lot of stepping on toes before things get smoothed out, which is where Oxygen's All The Right Moves is at right now.
On the next episode of All The Right Moves, Taja and Travis have had it with one another, the latter upset with the former's continued tardiness and lackadaisical attitude toward the show. They've not been on the best of terms in recent times,...

When The Hunger Games was released, there were plenty of people comparing it to Battle Royale, which was originally release in 2000. Looking to capitalize on the success of The Hunger Games, it is being reported that the CW is interested in developing a Battle Royale TV series.
This was first reported by the La Times, who claims that the CW is currently talking to the property’s Hollywood representatives about purchasing the rights. The one hurdle that may hold up a deal is that it requires the approval of Koushun Takami, who wrote the novel the film is based on.
Sadly, it seems unlikely that the series will be developed for fans of the original film, but for a young audience that sees it as a TV version of The Hunger Games. With the series being on the CW, it would be impossible to include the same level of violence...

Sometimes news comes our way that immediately starts making our heads hurt. This is one of those times. An American remake of the classic Japanese film Battle Royale is something that's been talked about a lot. Now with the success of The Hunger Games...
The La Times reports that The CW has had talks with the project's Hollywood representatives about the possibility of turning the property into an English-language show, said a person with knowledge of the situation who was not authorized to speak about it publicly. The talks were preliminary, but if a deal could be reached, the network would acquire rights to Koushun Takami’s underlying novel, then unpack and expand on it for an hour-long dramatic series.
In the original film the economy has collapsed, unemployment has soared, and juvenile crime has exploded. Fearful of their nation’s youth, the Japanese government passes The Br Law: Each...

When Degrassi: Showdown premieres July 16, there will be more than enough drama to go around, but we’ve got quite a few questions rolling around after checking out the first episodic trailer of the new season. Before we give you an exclusive look at the new season in next week’s Summer TV Preview Week, we’ve got 7 burning concerns with the latest promo. Watch and discuss below:
1) Why is Katie surprised that she and Drew had sex?
I mean, haven’t they been dating for foreverdom? Isn’t it about time for this sort of thing? Wait a minute, if Katie can’t remember banging Drew, this means that Katie must still be on drugs, right? Bad Katie!
2) What is with Drew’s response?
“Yeah, so, sorry that we had sex, but we need to split now so I can go back to Bianca.” Does that mean the sex wasn’t good or something?...

Battle Royale / Batoru Rowaiaru The Complete Collection Trailer. Kinji Fukasaku‘s Battle Royale / Batoru Rowaiaru (2000) The Complete Collection Blu-ray / DVD trailer stars Takeshi Kitano, Chiaki Kuriyama, Tatsuya Fujiwara, Aki Maeda, and Tarô Yamamoto. Battle Royale‘s plot synopsis: Based on the 1999 global best-seller by Koushun Takami, “In the near future, the economy has collapsed, unemployment has soared and juvenile crime has exploded. Fearful of their nation’s youth, the Japanese government passes The Br Law: Each year, a 9th grade class is sent to a remote island where they will be locked into exploding neck collars, given a random weapon, and forced to hunt and kill each other until there is only one survivor left.”

After sitting through the snoozefest ball-kick that was The Devil Inside (refresh your memory of my disdain by giving my review another look), a large part of me hoped that I would never need to think (or write) about the film ever again. Of course, that was before the “found footage” (fauxtage! fauxtage!) flick won the box office for the weekend, despite that F CinemaScore and some of the worst buzz surrounding a film ever. Of course such insipid, uninspired filmmaking would be rewarded! And how, as director and co-writer William Brent Bell has already been signed to direct a new film for Warner Bros. You will be shocked to learn that the film will be called The Vatican, and that it will also employ the found footage style that The Devil Inside used, though it’s described as “a hybrid.” I, too, am utterly shocked! The film is still in pitch format, and...

Well here we are in the last week of December, coming up on another 365 days of anger at the entertainment industry. In 52 installments, I’ve been upset about a wide range of topics, criticized directors, defended 3D, argued with my peers and said the f-word a whole lot, much to the disappointment of my mother. As a way of saying so long to 2011 and hello to the End of the World as We Know It (aka 2012), I wanted to take a brief look back at the previous year and pull the heaviest themes from Boiling Point and take a look at the recipients of my rage. So take off your shoes, grab a warm cup of cocoa and let’s take this journey together, provided you’re nowhere near me. If by some strange miracle you are near me, put your shoes on, put down my coffee cup and get the fuck out of my house. The...

Director: Kitano Takeshi. Review: Adam Wing. Well it’s about time. Kitano Takeshi is a complex individual it would seem, but with Outrage we are taken back to a time where life was much simpler. Not to mention a whole lot bloodier. You’d be forgiven for thinking he had fallen off the face of the planet, after a trilogy of films that dealt not with warfare, but with his own artistic integrity. In truth however, Takeshis’, Achilles and the Tortoise and Glory to the Filmmaker! struggled to find an audience on both sides of the water. They are deeply personal films blessed with the offbeat eccentricities of their guiding light, but you have to go all the way back to 2003 to witness Kitano at the height of his power. It was the 1990’s that saw Kitano deliver his finest work, with films like Boiling Point, Violent Cop and Sonatine...

Previously, on Boiling Point… I bitched about Hollywood not releasing enough horror movies in October. This week, I’m taking aim at them for not releasing any monster movies – pretty much ever. I’ve come to ask where all the monsters have gone. Monster movies have a special place in any horror fan’s heart. Whether you’re a fan of giant mutated ants, hybrid beasts, strange aliens, or any crazy old weird thing someone dreamed up that crawled out of a swamp and raped a cheerleader, monsters are awesome. The bigger, badder, and bloodier the better. It seemed for years that even if you weren’t looking for a monster, one would come out of the darkness and tear your face off. Nowadays, you’re hard pressed to get your shit packed in by a mythical beast even if you go defecating on Native American burial grounds. Yes, of course some monster movies have come out...

The other day I reached what one could consider the pinnacle of anger – Dr. Cole Abaius (retired) approached me about writing a Boiling Point about Netflix. Apparently the streaming and disc rental service got the good doctor angry and he did what any logical person would do – approached me to get even angrier on his behalf. At first I was somewhat reluctant to aim the anger rifle at Netflix. After all, I’ve been a subscriber for about six years and my experience has been mostly positive. For most of that six years, for a reasonable price you could get a lot of movies shipped to the comfort of your own home and later, even stream them right to your computer. But then, while using the official Netflix app, I became aware of many of its shortcomings and started getting angry. The floodgates opened – not only was I angry at the app, but...

Following up on last week’s Boiling Point, we again return to the subject of movie theater etiquette. While last we talked I verbally abused those who would leave behind their trash, soiling the stadium seating of our cinemas, I turn now to a different villain. An often ignored villain. Everyone knows that talking during the movies makes you an asshole. So does using your cell phone in literally any capacity. But there is an unknown ass amongst us, one that would think himself a hero. I had the unfortunate experience of dealing with two such deviants at a screening of Attack the Block in Los Angeles some nights ago. This villain is known as the shusher. The Shusher thinks he’s doing us a service. He has taken on the role of silence security guard. There is a role for the shusher to play – when someone talks, sometimes they need to be told to shut up...
