Too silly to be scary despite grim storyline
loomis78-815-98903415 March 2014
Warning: Spoilers
Jake Pruitt (Nelson) runs an auto salvage and towing service with his two sons in rural area of Georgia. The sons are the odd pairing of mean Hiram (Hesler) and mentally challenged Roy (Ralph Pruit Vaughn). The salvage yard is just a front for the crazy family who real business is harvesting human organs in their barn and selling them to a medical broker played by Ray Walston.

One day Jake sees a wheelchair bound beauty contestant named April (Birdsong) and it reminds him of his daughter. Under Jake's instruction, the two sons run April's family Winnebago off the road and abduct everyone inside. April's father Clifford (Saxon) puts up a fight and escapes only to be returned by the local cops who are in on the scam. April is locked away in the dirty homestead as the family continues to harvest body parts.

This movie is played with tongue in cheek despite some grim and scary ideas at work in the story. Unfortunately, these scary elements never really come into play because the filmmakers chose black humor instead of terror. The over the top performances by the actors and loony characters tell the audience you are supposed to be chuckling through this one. Some of the humor does work like the inspired touch of having Elvis Presley as one of the family's victims hooked up in the barn. The movie never gets as bloody as the title suggests and it leaves you with a grimy feeling after watching it. This is way too silly to be taken serious like "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" or even "Motel Hell" which this has been compared to.

The Atlanta Highway Massacre.
BA_Harrison20 February 2016
Blood Salvage is a one-of-a-kind in so far as it is the only horror film (to my knowledge) to be produced by a world heavyweight boxing champion: Evander Holyfield (who also has a cameo as himself, taking on opponents in the ring at a fairground). Thematically, however, the film is far less unique, using Tobe Hooper's oft-mimicked Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and his follow up Eaten Alive, for its template, with just a little bit of Motel Hell for good measure.

Lori Birdsong plays pretty teen April Evans, who doesn't let the fact that she is in a wheelchair stop her from entering beauty contests. Returning home from a pageant, the Evans family lose a wheel on their RV, unaware that it has been tampered with by reprehensible redneck Hiram, who forces vehicles off the road so that his father Jake can farm the organs of the injured occupants to sell on the black market (to the deviant Dr. Stone, played by My Favourite Martian star Ray Walston).

No sooner has the RV skidded to a halt, than Jake shows up to offer a helping hand, towing the family to his home where, one by one, he adds them to his organ farm—with the exception of April, who reminds Jake of his dead wife. By injecting April with spinal fluid taken from her younger brother Bobby (Andy Greenway), Jake hopes to make April walk once more, and then make her his wife. Of course, with April's legs functional, escape is possible, but the hicks' massive pet alligator makes matters more difficult…

Director Tucker Johnston wisely aims for a darkly comic tone, and occasionally hits the target—Jake's victims moaning 'help me' in unison as Mr. Evans (John Saxon) makes a bid for freedom is a wonderfully macabre moment—but with the general predictability of the script and not nearly enough in the way of graphic ghoulishness (despite the nature of the film, gore is kept to a minimum), Blood Salvage isn't quite as entertaining as its morbid premise promises.

"Helping people is my business".
lost-in-limbo10 January 2011
"Helping people is my business". Jake is completely… MAD! So are his two sons. The older son (whose animated facials and yokel dialogue delivery will always have you in stitches) drives a Torino with spikes at the front bumper. This is used to smash and knock off innocent people from the road, so his daddy Jake can turn up with his tow truck to help them out. However he is actually there to help himself to their fresh, healthy body organs, so he can sell them on the black market to a travelling salesman (a terrifically edgy Ray Walston). Yep this southern religious fanatic is just not a tow-trucker driver, but a surgeon at trade… a rough one too. But he has his eyes set on a beautiful young crippled teenager who he believes he can cure, as she and her family are returning home from a beauty pageant when they encounter vehicle trouble. Guess who is on the spot to help them out. "Mad Jake" aka "Blood Salvage" is a sickly twisted and insane backwoods horror outing with plenty of pitch-black tongue-in-cheek humour and the story/visuals really do wear its influences proudly. What came to mind are Tobe Hooper's "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" and "Eaten Alive", especially for the use of a hungry alligator roaming Jake's property. Also "Motel Hell" and "Slaughterhouse". Still this little on-the-cheap b-picture is a simple mish-mash, made much more the merrier for its wacky performances (great villain performances -- Danny Nelson), in-jokes (one regarding Elvis' whereabouts and cameo by Evander Holyfield), nasty surprises/images and of course a horror favourite the always commendable John Saxon. The suspense is certainly sustained in patches and a definite feel of helplessness feels the air when the young, if totally obnoxious handicapped girl (played with girt by Lori Birdsong) finds herself at the mercy of Jake and his sons (well not so the bulky, dim-witted one). It probably goes on for a little too long, but the encounters were certainly amusing (can't get enough of roof hitting with a broomstick) and the direction surefooted in installing a secluded atmosphere. The music score did become grating at times. One thing though don't you just hate it when the video / DVD synopsis spoils certain twists… even if it's typically foreseeable. Daft, but oddly fun.

pure entertainment

This movie is one of the best horror's I've seen in awhile. It rips off the texas chainsaw massacre and motel hell all throughout the movie. But it takes the same material and puts it in to something way better. The acting is good and the bad guys actually have a motive for doing what their doing. It's very logical too. It makes you think. If you see this somewhere do rent it.

Low grade B-movie horror
Leofwine_draca16 November 2017
Warning: Spoilers
BLOOD SALVAGE is a low-grade B-movie horror that might be one of the earliest examples of the 'torture porn' genre of filmmaking, although things never get too grisly here. The story is about a murderous hick who kidnaps victims and performs organ removals upon them before selling the body parts on the black market. Problems arise when his newest victim decides to fight back. The acting here is nondescript and the script is nothing to write home about, with tired old situations playing out that you've seen done a million times before. John Saxon plays in support and looks embarrassed to be here, and you can't really blame him.

fun overlooked horror flick with hick organ farmers and black humor
FieCrier8 January 2005
I'd never heard of this movie, so I wasn't expecting much, but I found it to be very entertaining.

A muscle car with a spike-plate on the front of it runs down a just-married couple in their car. They're picked up by a tow truck, and taken to a salvage yard that is more interested in them than their car.

The hick family of three behind the salvage yard takes an interest in a young woman in a wheelchair who is taking part in a beauty pageant. She's traveling with her parents and younger brother in an RV. Their RV gets sabotaged so that a wheel comes off, and a tow truck is ready to pick them up....

The young woman is a bit hard to take, but when she's yelling at her family not to do things, she's invariably right. She's a strong character. John Saxon does a good job as the father. The mother and brother don't have much to do.

The hick family is more interesting than I expected. The father is a Christian fanatic who has made up his own code of morality. Upset at the death of his wife at some point in the past for lack of a heart donor, he's recognized a niche that can be filled. Though a hick, he is a mad genius. He's also largely polite and smiling, like Farmer Vincent in Motel Hell.

There's an odd cameo by boxer Evander Holyfield at a carnival where people can try to beat him in the ring while he's blindfolded. Ray Walston (My Favorite Martian, Mr. Hand in Fast TImes at Ridgmont High) also has a small role, but his serves the plot more.

It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad... JAKE!
Coventry3 December 2006
Crazy & obscure little early 90's horror gem, this "Mad Jake" (a.k.a. "Blood Salvage). It's definitely better than I expected although severely lacking originality and a little too long for its own good. Tucker Johnston's script almost seems to be a tribute to Tobe Hooper's earliest horror classics, with a family of demented rednecks terrorizing innocent road travelers ("The Texas Chainsaw Massacre") whilst their pet-alligator (remember "Death Trap"?) carelessly wanders around the estate for no real reason. Father Jake is a genius yet totally deranged surgeon/religion freak who, with the help of his two sons Hiram and Roy, removes the healthy organs of innocent people and sells them to a sleazy elderly guy on the black market. Pretending to own a towing-service, Jake picks up the happy Evans family on their way home from a beauty contest where the gorgeous but crippled daughter April *almost* won. He takes an interest in April, as he thinks he can cure her damaged spine, but the young girl is tougher than she looks and fights back. "Mad Jake" contains quite a lot of grisly images, as these weirdos keep all their victims hanging more dead then alive in a barn, and April's desperate attempts to escape result in the occasional flashes of sheer suspense. The villain-characters are rather interesting, especially the oldest son Hiram who wears shirts of Lynyrd Skynyrd and claims all women are dirty whores. He also drives a truck with nasty spikes attached to the front and spontaneously starts fights with heavyweight boxing champions (a cameo by Evander Holyfield). So, you see, there's even a fair share of effective humor in this sadly forgotten horror movie! The acting performances are more than adequate with enthusiast lead players and respectable names in the supportive cast. John Saxon, a personal favorite of mine, stars as April's loving father and Ray Walston briefly appears as the organ dealer, eerily dressed in black. Highly recommended to fans of solid B-horror, if you can find it somewhere.

So-so horror film.
HumanoidOfFlesh8 September 2001
I saw this film under the title "Mad Jake".It tells us the story about deranged farmer Jake and his two imbecile sons-they murder tourists for their organs, which are later sold to rich merchants."Blood Salvage" is certainly twisted and grisly, and also very funny. The acting is decent, and there's short cameo by a famous boxer Evander Holyfield, who actually produced this one."Blood Salvage" borrows from "The Texas Chain Saw Massacre"(1974)and "Eaten Alive"(1976-for example huge alligator as a pet companion of Jake),but it is more slickly made than those two.Recommended, but definitely not for the squeamish. My rating:7 out of 10.

good, holds interest
missdaisy-11 January 2006
Warning: Spoilers
This is a B rate movie that is actually good. It has twists and turns and keeps your interest. The effects are good. This movie is not heard of much. And is very hard to find. I saw it about 10 years ago, and cant find it anymore to rent or buy. If you get to see this one , you'll like it. It has scary parts, and some are even funny, and the best part is the effects are real, and not computer animated. Rent this one or buy it if you can. Good movie. Low budget, but comes out nicely. Some famous faces are in this one. If you are a horror fan pick this one out. I give it a 6 out of 10. So remember when you travel try not to break down on dirt roads in the middle of nowhere, because you might find yourself at the mercy of a red-neck gang in an old house being terrorized, for days until you die. This is a good movie to watch right before going on a camping trip, or on a nice vacation.

worth digging up
kcleebs12 May 2003
This is an entertaining film. It's kind of like a cross between Deliverance and Nightmare on Elm Street. It's hard to find but if you're a "B" horror fan you'll dig it. The real treat is the barn and the gadgets that the film makers came up with to illustrate the "salvage" operation. I wish we could see more of that. There's a surprising cameo by Evander Hollyfield (with ear complete - a little ironic given the subject of the film).

"If Jake can't fix it... its been dead too long."
Backlash0075 March 2002
Warning: Spoilers
~Spoiler~

A preaching junkyard owner, Jake Pruitt, and his two less-than-genius sons sabotage road patrons and sell their body parts on the black market (to Mr. Hand no less, of Fast Times at Ridgemont High fame). Blood Salvage is strongly reminiscent of Motel Hell with shades of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. But it does have its own flare. Just like Farmer Vincent and Ida in Motel Hell, Jake and his sons are lighthearted villains. You're never really in fear for the heroine. She never seems to be in any real danger. But her family, however, that's another story. For these lighthearted villains kill more indiscriminately than any other screen villain, ever. I mean, the little boy, what the hell did he do to deserve decapitation? They just killed him, I couldn't believe it. And John Saxon, my hero, killed without a second thought. And what in the hell made Evander Holyfield produce and cameo in this? Is he a horror fan? I thought that was a little odd. All in all, Blood Salvage is a well done horror/comedy. Stick around for the credits and listen to the theme song sung by Jake and his sons.

Twisted and entertaining
Kasady5 January 1999
This is one of those obscure horror films made and forgotten. But this movie has all the parts of a classic. Smooth plot, understandable events, blood, it has it all. The interaction between Jake and his 2 sons works, and the way the victims are treated is expected. Watch this movie!

A good'n'gruesome little redneck horror romp
Woodyanders6 January 2007
Warning: Spoilers
This cheerfully (and uproariously) gruesome tongue-in-cheek Southern-fried horror opus centers on the demented hayseed Pruitt clan -- crackpot religious fanatic papa Jake (delightfully played to the cackling wacko hilt by Danny Nelson), his sweet-natured portly oaf son Roy (an endearingly goofy Ralph Pruitt Vaughn) and his surly sadist brother Hiram (an amusingly nasty Christian Hesler) -- who use hapless passersby as involuntary donors for their nefarious human body organ spare parts ring. Competently directed by Tucker Johnson (who also co-wrote the witty script), with first-rate make-up f/x by Tony Gardner and Bill "Splat" Johnson, fine acting from a solid cast (Lori Birdsong is especially impressive as the feisty crippled heroine while Ray Walston as an unscrupulous black marketer and the always awesome John Saxon as Birdsong's hard-nosed dad deliver typically up to speed performances), plenty of sidesplitting sick humor (the throwaway Elvis joke is really funny), and a hilarious ending credits religious hymn theme song that's warbled off-key by the deliciously deranged Pruitt family ("Are you warshed in the blood of the lamb"), "Blood Salvage" makes the grade as a good'n'grisly backwoods terror tale.

A Great Horror Movie
Shadow_Destiny6 July 2002
Well, In the B movie sense anyway. It is greatly entertaining. If Hiram doesn't keep you laughing throughout this movie then you are living a sad life. It even has John Saxon in it, which some will recognize as the father in "A Nightmare on Elm Street" It has some decent acting (although The main character's (April) voice is a little annoying.) Ok effects, and a whole lotta laughs. If you are on a B movie hunt. Pick this one up!
