Here’s why it has been so difficult for filmmakers to create a Janis Joplin biopic and what Pink said about the casting process.

Tegan and Sara have shared the video for their new ballad “Faded Like a Feeling,” the latest single off the twin duo’s upcoming 10th studio album Crybaby.
The nostalgic visual for the track finds the Quin sisters on a swing set at a riverside park, staring pensively out toward the water as they ruminate on past relationships.
“Faded Like a Feeling” follows “Fucking Up What Matters” and the Coldplay-inspired “Yellow” off Crybaby, due out Oct. 21. Written amid the Covid-19 pandemic, Crybaby marks the Quin sisters’ most collaborative album in years.

Described by Spain’s San Sebastian Festival as “one of contemporary cinema’s most talented and versatile actors,” American actor Johnny Depp will receive San Sebastian’s highest honor, its Donostia Award, in a ceremony taking place on Sept. 22 at the festival’s Kursaal Auditorium.
Depp is already one of San Sebastian’s favorite sons, having figured as one of the highest profile star presences at last year’s on-site festival, where he co-presented “Crock of Gold: A Few Rounds with Shane McGowan” with director Julien Temple.
This year’s award puts Depp among recent honorees including Ethan Hawke, Sigourney Weaver, Judy Dench, Penelope Cruz and Viggo Mortensen.
Breaking out in the early 1990s with lead roles in John Waters’ “Cry Baby” and Tim Burton’s “Edward Scissorhands,” Depp secured his left of field artistic credentials making films with prestigious foreign directors such as Emir Kusturica (“Arizona Dream”) and Lasse Hallström...

The last few months have been great for hip-hop. With multiple high-profile releases — some acclaimed, some commercially successful, and some both — and myriad buzzy new artists making big splashes in the genre, what should we expect in the rap field this year at the Grammys? Let’s consider some of the biggest contenders so far as well as a few possible hidden gems.
You can’t start a Grammys rap piece without mentioning one of the biggest hip-hop moments of the last 10 years: Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion’s “Wap.” The song is likely the front-runner for Best Rap Performance and Best Rap Song. American Idol is throwing a major curveball at its Season 19 contestants: Only nine of them will advance to the Top 10 later this spring, with the final spot going to a contestant from last season.
ABC announced Monday that 10 singers from Season 18 — including runner-up Arthur Gunn — will return to Idol and compete for a spot in the current season’s Top 10. As executive producer and showrunner Trish Kinane told Billboard, the show wanted to give Season 18’s contestants a chance to perform on the big Idol stage, after the coronavirus pandemic forced live shows to happen remotely from singers’ homes last year.

I’d recently been absorbed in the deep colors and heartache of Douglas Sirk's melodramas, following on from this I found myself pining for more white picket fence drama, but with a twist. This is where John Waters came back into my world, how I had missed him, so this edition of Notebooks Soundtrack Mix is a sonic ode to a pioneer of perversion. I started back with Polyester (1981) and Serial Mom (1994), which, alongside Gus Van Sant's 1995 To Die For is a double bill I’m always dreaming of. The work of John Waters ramps up the technicolor dreams of Sirk and places them in a camp world of dysfunctional misfits. His work is a reminder to not take things so seriously and that there is a place for everyone in this world which, importantly, includes the poor, repugnant and nasty! Waters is famous for his use of...

Much like other major award shows, nominees for the Grammys often go on big media tours in order to promote themselves and their nominated work in hopes of boosting their chances of a possible win. While Grammy campaigning is definitely not as in-your-face as Oscar campaigning, it can still help keep artists in the public eye and potentially sway votes their way. After winners last year like Billie Eilish, Lizzo, and Lil Nas X did their campaigning due, let’s see who did theirs for this year’s ceremony.
One of this year’s biggest campaigners has been Dua Lipa, nominated for six awards including Album, Record, and Song of the Year. Lipa got a coveted spot on the “SNL” Christmas episode hosted by series alum Kristen Wiig, where she performed her three-time nominated song “Don’t Start Now.” Lipa also stopped at other spots, including Netflix’s “SongExploder,” where...

Megan Thee Stallion has released a video for her Good News track “Cry Baby,” featuring DaBaby. Directed by Colin Tilley, the very silly visual pays homage to the Toy Story films, particularly the Al’s Toy Barn toy store scenes from Toy Story 2.
The clip starts off with the toy store clerk, played by Instagram comedian BlameItOnKway, play-acting an argument between two Barbie dolls before closing up shop. With the store empty, all of the toys — played by Megan, DaBaby, and dozens and dozens of dancers — come to life.

On November 24, Grammy nominations day, two of the most celebrated inclusions were Dua Lipa and Billie Eilish in the general field, as well as in the pop categories. They share a big achievement: they’re the two most recent Best New Artist winners, Lipa prevailing at the 2019 ceremony, and Eilish in 2020. What might be surprising to some is that both seem to have escaped the infamous “Best New Artist curse,” a popular belief that people who win the coveted award tend to under-perform after winning, either commercially or awards-wise (or both).
In the past we’ve seen a lot of Best New Artist winners turn out to be passing fads. A good example is Macklemore and Ryan Lewis, who won in 2014. Their case is even starker than most because all the other nominees that year have become successful acts in the music industry and claimed Grammys after their Bna losses.

Americana duo Shovels & Rope have teamed up with singer-songwriter Sharon Van Etten for a mesmerizing version of the Beach Boys’ “In My Room,” part of a new covers collection. Busted Jukebox Volume 3 will be released February 5th via Dualtone and marks married collaborators Michael Trent and Cary Ann Hearst’s third installment of reinterpreted songs.
In true Busted Jukebox fashion, Shovels & Rope’s take on “In My Room” is charmingly left-of-center, beginning with a strummed 12-string guitar and piling on layers of instrumentation, including snare drum and some low-end buzz,...

Contestants dropped like mics as The Voice’s Season 19 Knockouts continued Monday. Five — count ’em, five — would-be winners were sent packing. Well, at least if you include the one poor guy whose performance was entirely cut from the show. Read on, and we’ll go over all of the KOs that we got to see and hear in full, then you can sound off about the coaches’ picks and whether the ear-cleaning I gave myself after panning Payge Turner’s performance last week did any good.

Last week on “The Voice,” the knockout rounds commenced with two artists getting sent home: Casmè for Team John Legend and Ryan Berg for Team Gwen Stefani. That left 26 artists still in the running to win the Season 19 championship, with many more about to be eliminated during Monday’s two-hour episode. Gwen was the only coach to use her last save of the season (on country singer Ben Allen), which meant John, Kelly Clarkson and Blake Shelton still had the power to swoop in and save an at-risk contestant before the all-important live shows. How did Night 2 of the knockouts play out, and what advice did mega mentor Usher give to the remaining artists?

Come every October, audiences can be guaranteed that programming will shift over to horror-centric content to fit with Halloween. With the litany of streaming services that now exist, it’s gone from being difficult to fill 31 days of content to it being a serious struggle to fit everything in. There’s horror programming everywhere at the moment and this is also true when it comes to anime.
Netflix has built up an increasingly impressive library of anime content that includes some moody horror selections that are perfect for the season (or anytime really). However, with so many titles out there it’s not always easy to know what’s worthwhile, especially when the names of some series don’t do much to help on the matter. Here’s a helpful selection of some of Netflix’s best and most frightening anime titles so you don’t have to dig through the herd.

Seven seconds into Kelsy Karter’s “God Knows I’ve Tried,” an electric guitar wails languidly and the listener immediately knows what they’re in for. It’s a power ballad, and an undeniably soulful one at that.
“Daddy wishes I was the girl next door, mama tells me I should smile some more,” the New Zealand-born artist serenades jazzily. “Baby, I’ve been bad, but god knows I’ve tried to be good,” Karter adds, before the backing vocals come in to repeat the song’s title in a gospel-esque manner.

Baltimore native John Waters is filmdom’s pencil-mustached titan of trash who has spent a lifetime of dumpster-diving into a vat of bad taste, sleaze, kinky gross-outs, over-the-top camp, maudlin melodramatics, sick jokes, taboo sexuality, vulgarity and bizarre personalities. At least he has a fabulous sense of humor. The director, who turns 72 on April 22, is a New York University film school dropout who instead became a scholar of transgressive, envelope-shredding cinema, influenced by the directorial likes of Herschell Gordon Lewis, Federico Fellini, William Castle, Douglas Sirk and Ingmar Bergman. Early on, Waters assembled a stock company of players from suburban Baltimore who he called the Dreamlanders, including Mink Stole and Edith Massey.

The early ’90s were an interesting time for horror; theatrical distribution was wanting, and what films were made mostly found themselves victims of the direct-to-video route. I shouldn’t say victims; they were still made for those cruising the video store aisles in need of the latest adrenaline fix of terror. One film of the era that received extra attention was Skinner (1993), but not necessarily due to content; no, it turns out that director Ivan Nagy was at the time the boyfriend of the notorious Hollywood Madam, Heidi Fleiss. Had audiences paid closer attention to the film than the gossip rags, they would have been privy to a somewhat disjointed yet interesting flick. Thanks to Severin Films, everyone has a chance to see what all the fuss is about with another stellar Blu-ray release.
