When Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham joined Fleetwood Mac at the end of 1974, the group set off on a path that made them one of the most commercially successful bands in the world. Nicks and Buckingham’s influence on the group cannot be understated. Their songwriting, vocals, and overall musical talent fit in with the band but also transformed it. It’s hard to imagine the band without them.

If there’s one song that sums up the stoic guitar genius of Peter Green, it’s “Jumping at Shadows,” recorded live in February 1970, at the Boston Tea Party. Green was on top of the world; a 23-year-old rock star leading the London band he founded, Fleetwood Mac. They were the toast of Britain, riding their Number One hit “Albatross.” But “Jumping at Shadows” is a doomy blues ballad, his voice full of wistful dread, his guitar full of delicate pain. “I’m going downhill and I blame myself,” he sings.

Original Fleetwood Mac guitarist Peter Green kept an extremely low profile since leaving the band in 1970, and had been a virtual ghost during the past decade. For a February 25th tribute at the London Palladium, Mick Fleetwood assembled an incredible roster of talent to honor Green, including David Gilmour, Christine McVie, Steven Tyler, Bill Wyman, Billy Gibbons, John Mayall, and many others. His death was announced on July 25th at the age of 73.

Nearly one hour into “American Idol,” judge Katy Perry nearly gave up waiting for someone to “start the show.” Then Ada Vox (pictured) stepped up to the microphone. Dramatically standing center stage and channeling her inner Freddie Mercury with power and conviction over a, perhaps, overzealous band, some notes may have sounded strained but the emotion made it work.
“I was waiting for someone to show up,” said Perry.
Added Lionel Richie: “You have no idea how fabulous you are… you came here tonight to stop the show.”
Vox was certainly looking like the one to beat, and her story of surviving brain surgery added another dimension to the impressive performance of Queen’s “The Show Must Go On.” That was, until the second half of Sunday night’s (April 22) show.

“I’m Ryan Seacrest, and this is… a series of terrible song choices.”
At least that’s how Sunday’s American Idol probably should have been introduced. Though the performances improved dramatically as the two-hour event progressed, this episode — the first one where America’s opinion actually matters — found some of Season 16’s best singers at their worst.
But was it all because of nerves? Or are we finally separating the dreamers from the achievers? You be the (fourth) judge as we break down all of tonight’s performances:
Caleb Lee Hutchinson
Katy Perry nailed it when she praised Hutchinson for his remarkable evolution.

The Top 14 on season 16 of “American Idol” take to the stage on Sunday, April 22. Twenty-four hour later, six of them will hear from host Ryan Seacrest that they’ve landed a place in the Top 10 based on their standing in the public vote. The remaining eight contestants will have to sing again. The three judges – Luke Bryan, Katy Perry and Lionel Richie – will then confer and decide which four other finalists are their choices to move on in the competition and which four will go home.
Heading into Sunday’s show, four of the Top 14 — Gabby Barrett, Cade Foehner, Jurnee and Ada Vox — are your clear favorites, according to our poll of readers. Each of them has racked up at least 10% of the total vote to date. If they tally at least that when America weighs in, each of them should number among the six finalists to move through automatically on Monday,...

The revival of “American Idol” on ABC has finally reached the Top 14 stage of the competition, with viewers getting to vote for their favorites based on the performance of these finalists on the Sunday April 22 episode. This show was taped on Saturday and we have dug some digging and discovered the songs sung by these would-be winners of season 16. Scroll down to see the names of these tunes and the running order of the contestants on this show hosted, as always, by Ryan Seacrest.
All 14 of these contestants survived a prolonged process that began with winning over the three judges — Luke Bryan, Katy Perry and Lionel Richie — at a regional audition. A whopping 169 hopefuls made the trip to Hollywood where they were cut down to just 50. Those Top 50 competed both individually and in groups before the judges decided on the Top 24. We’ve covered plenty of obscure films available on iTunes in previous From VHS to VOD columns but Apple’s digital service is not the only VOD service making waves into the strange and obscure – there’s plenty of odd, unseen and unreleased (well unreleased on disc formats) films available on Amazon Video.
Unlike iTunes, a lot of the more obscure titles are only available for streaming rather than purchase, though the wide variety of films you don’t, and probably won’t see elsewhere makes up for that. Like iTunes there are some truly obscure films hidden away in the depths of Amazon’s vast collection of movies. Some of which have been made available in the UK for the first time since VHS and a Lot that have been added to the service in their original uncut form!

For many, the story of Fleetwood Mac begins with the 1974 arrival of Lindsay Buckingham and Stevie Nicks, the talented yet combustible American duo who ignited an explosive string of hits that continue to define the band. But Mick Fleetwood wants to move past those rumors. Fans of the group’s pop jewels would hardly recognize their original incarnation as one of the most respected British blues bands of the ’60s. Now the founding drummer is telling the tale of those formative years in Love That Burns: A Chronicle of Fleetwood Mac, Volume One 1967–1974, a lavish new book by Genesis Publications due out Sept.

Musical residencies are basically like a concert tour, except instead of the artist traveling the country (or world), the fans are all coming to them. An institution in Las Vegas (just take a look at Céline Dion and Britney Spears), this year’s lineup includes the Who, Mariah Carey, Backstreet Boys and Journey, among others. Here are the best new residencies to catch in Sin City this summer — and what to expect from them.

L.A.-based DJ/producer Steven Zhu – better known by his stage name, Zhu – has made his BBC Radio 1 debut, and it’s pretty much the future of groove. We were looking forward to it as much as anybody, and we feel confident in asserting that the end result was well worth the hype.
The mix opens with a soulful, electric guitar-driven ID in the same vein as Carlos Santana’s “Black Magic Woman,” which Zhu has used to open countless recent sets. It segues into a VIP of the artist’s own “Superfriends” before a string of pop and hip-hop remixes and edits including T-Pain’s “Bartender,” Michael Jackson’s Thriller and both “I Like The Way You Move” and “Ms. Jackson” by Outkast. The mix wraps up with another ID, this one more lyrically driven than the first, as well as some closing comments by BBC Radio 1 host Pete Tong.

Wille and the Bandits, it would seem, are a fairly well-kept secret. Tonight’s gig takes place at the Bullingdon Arms in Oxford, a few doors down from the altogether flashier O2 Academy. There, headlining acts are emblazoned above the door, like West End stars: here, there are just a few posters of the Bandits in the pub’s window, to point us in the direction of the gig. The Bullingdon Arms doesn’t even have its own name above the door.
Perhaps unlike the O2 though, the band chat to fans before taking to a modest stage set-up. It’s hard to imagine a group bigger than a three-piece performing up there, and when Wille and the Bandits launch into Morricone-esque guitar slides, it’s harder to imagine them suiting any other sized venue.
That’s not to say they haven’t got the choruses to fill bigger rooms:...

Earlier this month we published a list of 20 cover songs that became more famous than the originals. From Whitney Houston's version of "I Will Always Love You" to Sinead O'Connor's breathy remake of Prince's "Nothing Compares 2U," the list scanned some of the best renditions in music history.
There's another realm of cover songs we didn't include in the last post, however, which is where our list of unexpected covers comes in. We've put together the strangest and most unpredictable song selections of artists like Johnny Cash, Tom Waits and Dusty Springfield. Scroll through the list below and let us know your thoughts on the world of reimagined tunes in the comments.
1. "Hurt" by Johnny Cash (original by Nine Inch Nails)

VHS collectors seem to be coming out of the woodwork lately. What many thought was a dead format seems to be making a major resurgence, similar to the way vinyl did. We wouldn’t dream of telling you that the quality of a VHS cassette provides superior picture, sound, or anything. But it is certainly a lot of nostalgic fun to revisit some of the more obscure titles by way of your Vcr.

Making comparisons is one way to set up some level of accessibility with the British public: “Hey, we sound a bit like (generally respected band from the same genre)!” “No way! I love (generally respected band from the same genre)! I will definitely listen out for you and potentially spend money to see your gig!” And so it unfolds… Frenetics as a new band can’t be blamed for trying out this formula but when you’re placing yourself alongside 70’s new wave rock legends Television and Magazine, you’ve got to have the sound to back it up. It is a brave band that shackles their first Ep with such high expectations and Broken Hand, though promising, doesn’t quite hit those lofty heights.

The U.S. Northeast experienced record-breaking heat Monday. The “Dancing with the Stars” ballroom hopes the sizzle stretches to Southern California for Latin Week.
The remaining nine couples look to bring hotness to the dance floor with Argentine tangos, salsas and sambas. More clothing comes off, though not Gavin DeGraw’s hat. On paper, this week should bring the Cuban, William Levy, back toward the top of the leaderboard, but he injured his right ankle over the weekend and needed an Mri.

When (or if) Carlos Santana finally retires and ends his almost 50-year-long career (so far) of being one of the greatest genre-spanning guitar talents of his time, it will be a very sad day. But that day is not today, and by the logic of these past two sentences it wasn't last year either, which might account for his live concert at Montreux which someone had the wisdom to record and commit to DVD and Blu-ray. Santana Live at Montreux 2011 has the acclaimed artist playing a 23-song set of his classics and covers of hits originally by Tito Puente ("Oye Como Va"), Fleetwood Mac ("Black Magic Woman"), and John Coltrane ("A Love Supreme"). Be honest though, how many of you associate those songs with Santana more than you do the original artists?
To celebrate the release of Santana Live at Montreux, we're going to give away a DVD copy to three lucky readers.

Carlos Santana didn't mind that it rained on his wedding day. The legendary "Black Magic Woman" guitarist married drummer Cindy Blackman on the island of Maui in Hawaii on December 19 and said bad weather wasn't going to affect the big day.
The 63-year-old told People Magazine, "The weather was kind of iffy, so we said, 'Let's just do it inside', because no matter where we did it, the sun was shining." His new wife added, "Rain represents mercy. It couldn't have been more beautiful."
The nuptials between the pair was a spiritual affair watched by 180 guests including musician friends Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter, and the ceremony enabled the pair to make good use of the wet weather outside.
Cindy, 51, explained, "My favorite part of the ceremony was when we washed our hands in a bowl of rainwater. We absolved ourselves of all things past and all things future except the two of us.

"We are in talks with Santana. I have always wanted to sing with an artiste like him. It will be something new and different. I have experimented with my music a lot and this is going to be a new challenge," Asha told Pti.
In her six decade-long career, Asha has mastered almost all genres in music, be it pop, ghazal, classical, quawwali or Rabindra Sangeet. Read on for the new champ's shocked reaction and the full recap! The time has come to appoint the new winner of "American Idol". Slightly less than 100 million votes were cast for both Adam Lambert and Kris Allen, and according to DialIdol.com, only a few votes separated the two that it is difficult to foresee who will be the winner.
The result show on Wednesday, May 13 was opened with Ryan Seacrest welcoming back Adam and Kris on the stage. Right after that, a video about the judges was played before the Top 13, all in white outfits, performed Pink's "So What". As previously reported, the show was to be visited by many guest performers and the first to take the stage was last season's "Idol" champion, David Cook. He sang "Permanent" that was dedicated to his late brother and can be purchased with benefits going to cancer research.

Hi guys - sorry I’m late. I was busy talking to Paula Abdul on the red carpet. Seriously. More on that later…
But for now, it’s time to live-blog the “American Idol” finale! Yay!
8:01 pm - Seacrest is introducing the judges with fun little montage that reminds us why they’re the worst judges on television. Also, Randy Jackson borrowed a bow-tie from (Mrs.) J. Alexander on “America’s Next Top Model.”
8:06 pm - What’s the worst part about being an “Idol” finalist? Having to sing songs about mountains and hurricanes or being forced to wear all white on the finale? At least Adam’s wearing space boots.
8:06 pm - Mikalah Gordon is in Conway, Arkansas. This is the first time they’ve seen a real live drag queen. It’s a night of firsts!!
8:07 pm - Carly Smithson is in San Diego.

Supermodel Naomi Campbell has teamed up with Carlos Santana and a troupe of dancing lizards for a new SoBe Life Water ad.
The British catwalk stunner wowed with her dance moves to Michael Jackson's Thriller when her first SoBe ad aired at the beginning of 2008, and now she's a Black Magic Woman.
