Time is running out to stream films like “Lincoln,” “The Fisher King” and “He Got Game” on HBO Max. Below is the complete list of everything leaving HBO and HBO Max in January 2022, which includes some classic “Planet of the Apes” films, Ben Affleck’s Oscar-winning “Argo” and 1988’s “Married to the Mob,” among others. Most of these titles leave the streaming service on Jan. 31, but departing HBO and HBO Max on Jan. 20 is a behind-the-scenes look at Guillermo del Toro’s new film “Nightmare Alley,” which is exclusively in theaters now.
If you’re looking for noteworthy titles to add to your watchlist before they depart, “Lincoln” is one of Steven Spielberg’s best, “Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy” is a handsome and nail-biting spy thriller and “The Fisher King” is a great two-hander with Jeff Bridges and Robin Williams.
Check out the full list of what’s leaving HBO Max in January 2022 below.

Do not adjust your WiFi settings. No, you are not experiencing a severe case of Deja Streaming-vu. HBO Max’s list of new releases for May 2021 are indeed highlighted by two very recent WarnerMedia hits.
For starters, Tenet finally makes its long-awaited HBO Max this month. Mark your calendars as May 1 is the day that you can finally watch Christopher Nolan’s latest cerebral thriller. Of course, Tenet already had its theatrical release, but obviously that was not really an option for many of us. In addition to Tenet, Wonder Woman 1984 makes its triumphant return to HBO Max this month on May 13. The Wonder Woman sequel already premiered on HBO Max this past December, now it’s getting a second run on the streamer.
In terms of newer originals, May is relatively light for HBO Max. The Jean Smart-starring comedy Hacks premieres on May 13. The latest Adventure Time...

Note: This is going to be the most inside-y of inside baseball columns, but so many people over the years have asked me what it's like to write about "Mad Men" — particularly in these later, screener-less seasons — that I wanted to put together some personal memories of the experience. If you understandably just want to read about the show itself, I've written a ton, including reviews of every single episode (the first three seasons on my old blog, everything else here at HitFix), picks for the best episodes, an essay on the distinct moment in TV history in which "Mad Men" debuted, recent interviews with Matthew Weiner and Jon Hamm, and even an entire chapter of my book (which will have an updated version in the fall to discuss the end of this show and "Breaking Bad"). This Sunday night should be the last time for a very long time...

Drugs, lies and tap-dancing feature in this week's surprising, ominous Mad Men, proving the show still has tricks up its sleeve...
This review contains spoilers.
6.8 The Crash
Writing for a character as inscrutable as Don Draper must be a mixed blessing. While Draper’s stylish, distant demeanour lends itself to delivering gnomic dialogue and posing for cool silhouettes against the Manhattan skyline, when it comes to showing the audience what’s going on inside TV’s most unreachable leading man, you find yourself painted into a corner.
Enter the pharmaceutical get-out clause, a temporary crisis that lets Draper escape his closed off personality and allows us to see something of what’s underneath. It’s the plot device that forces Draper to become uncharacteristically voluble and turn to face the camera for once. The Crash used a workplace amphetamine shot, but past glimpses into...

Like a lot of Mad Men episodes, “The Crash” needs to be seen twice — not to unlock any subtleties of structure or tone, but to get over the idea that it’s really “about” much of anything. I guess you could make the case that it captures that post-mlk-rfk feeling that the entire world was losing its mind, or felt as if it was. Nearly early every moment feels knowingly off-kilter. A couple of the guest characters (the I Ching–obsessed, token-tossing hippie chick who ends up screwing Stan, and the African-American burglar posing as Don Draper’s mammy) feel like nightmare figures: manifestations of a rattled and deeply threatened collective Wasp id. There are moments when the episode threatens to turn into another “Guy Walks Into an Advertising Office,” “Mystery Date,” or “Dark Shadows,” to name three Mad Men in which the terrors of sixties history intruded on the...

It’s time for Mystery Date: Supernatural Edition! While the whole vampire craze may be drawing to a close (Twilight: Breaking Dawn — Part 2 comes out on DVD March 2) 2013 is still on track to be a huge year for those that love the supernatural. Apologies to viewers who enjoy their zombies more in the style of Walking Dead, but it’s looking like the biggest trend is more romance, less death and destruction. Warm Bodies, in theaters today, centers around a love story between zombie R. and a human, Julie. It’s a great read – and surprisingly, in between the killing and the brain eating,...

Selena used to vent to her ‘Monte Carlo’ co-star Luke Bracey when she was having relationship problems with her ex Justin Bieber, claims a new report. Do you think they will go from friends to something more?
Selena Gomez, 20, was allegedly holding hands with her Monte Carlo co-star Luke Bracey, 23, at a Golden Globes party at West Hollywood’s Sunset Tower in mid January. But this isn’t the first time the former co-workers have connected. According to a new report, Selena would call Luke when things weren’t going well with her now ex-boyfriend Justin Bieber.
A source close to Luke told oceanUP.com, “Luke remained closest to Selena after the filming of Monte Carlo. They texted from time to time, but when things with Justin were getting bad she would meet up with him to talk.”
The source would not elaborate on whether Selena and Luke have ever hooked up.

Selena Gomez and her girlfriends Samantha Droke, Francia Raisa and Laura Quinn posted an amazing choreographed dance to Sel’s Bff Taylor Swift‘s song “I Knew You Were Trouble” on Dec. 12. A month later, on Jan. 15, Selena seems to have the same message to ex-boyfriend Justin Bieber – and she posted different fan versions of the dance to continuously dig at her former love!

Jingle Bells, holding tight to the one you love, singing puppets: no, it's not another lousy Christmas song, it's Piney Gir's "Outta Sight." The Kansas-born (holler) pop songwriter assembled a team of sock puppets for her take on "Mystery Date," the video backdrop to unabashedly catchy "Outta Sight" from her album "Geronimo!" The track's strengths lie in her lyrical simplicity, a realness in that sweet voice, rounded out with bright arrangement power. As for those love-longing sock puppets, we can only hope for a real match waiting somewhere under the mistletoe. Out via Highline in October, "Geronimo!" was produced by Rob...

Reviewing and recommending any new home video release of Mad Men is an absurdly easy task. This is the best series on television, one of the single greatest dramas in the history of the medium, and among the smartest and most meaningful works of art, in any format, of the modern era. AMC and Lionsgate have always recognized this by putting a staggering amount of effort into the home video packages, delivering flawless video and audio and assembling hefty, invaluable archives of bonus material.
None of that changes with the show’s fifth season. This is, arguably, the series’ most creatively ambitious and successful run to date, and the Blu-Ray and DVD releases are just as rock solid as ever. Mad Men Season Five is a must-own release on either format, continuing to set an insanely high bar for television on home video.

Pink and her hubby Carey Hart had a tasty outing recently in San Francisco, celebrating the motocross star's 37th birthday. Popping into the city's Prospect eatery, the pop star - clad in flowy pants and a head wrap - and her man, with a friend, sat in a booth in the middle of the restaurant, and were "really friendly and low-key," a source tells People. It was quite the feast for the health-conscious couple, with Pink munching on tortellini with fava beans, summer truffles, dinosaur kale and red pearl onions - and Hart, who said he was "in training," nibbling...

If you read my reviews of the last few episodes of Mad Men this season – especially the season finale – you’ll know that I wasn’t a huge fan of some of the story arcs this year. The acting, however, remained incredible and there are still a number of scenes that have stayed with me the few weeks since the finale aired.
Here are my favorites. List your favorites in the comments!

We all weren’t sure what to make of Megan when Don impulsively proposed to her at the end of the previous season, but I have to admit, most of us were quite enamored with her after her lustful performance of “Zou Bisou Bisou” at his surprise birthday party. (Or maybe that was just me.)

Mad Men, Season 5, Episode 13: “The Phantom”
Written by Jonathan Igla & Matthew Weiner
Directed by Matthew Weiner
Airs Sundays at 9pm (Et) on AMC
Having set such high standards, it’s disappointing to find that the season finale doesn’t live up to the same quality as previous episodes. ‘The Phantom’ isn’t necessarily a weak 50 minutes of television, but for the first time this season, Weiner’s renowned plotting lets him down.
That said, the fifth season has demonstrated that Mad Men is still the best character drama on television. It’s probably the strongest season thus far. Its writing, acting, direction, editing and costume design has been supreme. Other competitors will have trouble matching the writing for ‘Signal 30′, ‘Mystery Date’ and ‘The Other Woman’. The performances from Hamm and Moss in the emotional ‘The Other Woman’ and Vincent Kartheiser in ‘Signal 30′ are due strong praise. You won’t...

Mad Men, Season 5, Episode 12: “Commissions and Fees”
Written by Andre Jacquemetton & Maria Jacquemetton
Directed by Chris Manley
Airs Sundays at 9pm (Et) on AMC
A major thematic arc this season has been the dissatisfaction of characters, derived from their constant efforts to achieve happiness; whatever “happiness” actually means. This has manifested itself in a number of different ways throughout the season and appears once again in this episode, the penultimate of the season.
For Pete and Roger, boredom has been at the forefront of their discontent. Both have tired of their respective wives. Roger is even at the stage of finding sex “disappointing” with others outside of his now separated wife. “If they can get it, won’t everyone want it?”, Roger proposes during the partner meeting. This idea of greed and the continued struggle for happiness, as last week’s episode noted, points to the fact that happiness is probably unattainable.

Mad Men, Season 5, Episode 7: “At the Codfish Ball”
Written by Jonathan Igla
Directed by Michael Uppendahl
Airs Sundays at 9pm (Et) on AMC
It’s somewhat surprising that Mad Men hasn’t dealt with the following subject matter more overtly, but this week’s episode focuses on the confrontation between tradition and progress. Through the eyes of Sally Draper, we explore a “dirty” world where almost every character is a slave to social traditions and compliance with them.
Sign-posted very early on during Sally’s phone call with her friend Glen (played again by Weiner’s son, Marten), Igla underlines that the youth is very much subservient to tradition. She tells him that she and Bobby are “like…slaves” to Henry’s mother.
What makes the time period such a wonderful vehicle for conflict is the change and insurgence towards what the younger generation viewed as out-dated traditions. In fact,...

Mad Men, Season 5, Episode 5: “Signal 30″
Written by Frank Pierson & Matthew Weiner
Directed by John Slattery
Airs Sundays at 9pm (Et) on AMC
It was always going to be tough following up the brilliance of “Mystery Date”, however the teleplay produced for this episode is probably of even higher quality. Although more explicit in its messages and use of symbolism, “Signal 30″ seems to proffer that punishment will follow one’s refusal to conform.
This week there is a strong focus on Pete, who encapsulates this idea most powerfully, though not solely. Mad Men often delivers wonderfully textured episodes with such density to them and great complexity to its layers, and there is no aberration this time, as the message of heeding to conformity is explored across the multiple characters’ stories.
“Signal 30″ opens on Pete in the midst of viewing the driver safety film, Signal 30. Unwittingly, the film forewarns Pete to conform to safety,...

Looks like The Cabin in the Woods is already impacting pop culture as another Lionsgate project, AMC's "Mad Men" TV series, has been mashed-up a bit with the film in a new video, which we have right here!
Below you'll see the show's "Mystery Date" episode, which upon airing this past Sunday was likened to a horror movie on its own, recut to resemble Cabin's very effective trailer. It was produced and edited by Lyle Goodale with special thanks to Matthew Weiner, Matt Shakman, and Victor Levin.

Teyonah Parris is nothing like Dawn Chambers, the shy, quiet administrative assistant she plays on AMC's "Mad Men." We first met Dawn -- Don Draper's newest secretary -- in the episode "Tea Leaves," but her character was fleshed out and given more of a chance to dazzle viewers in Sunday's (April 8) episode, "Mystery Date."
The Juillard-trained actress' role may be small so far, but she's playing a huge role in the story's arc -- single-handedly integrating the offices of Sterling Cooper Draper Price. But, she tells Zap2it, she's a big fan of period acting pieces so she jumped at the chance to be a part of "Mad Men" and try on the 1960s.
"I talked to my grandmother," Parris says of her preparation for the Civil Rights-era setting. "She was actually working in an office back then. She didn't really want to talk about it, but I did get...

Well, that was one of the spookier Mad Men episodes, complete with not one but two dream sequences. As always, there be some spoilers ahead discussing this episode, the aptly titled "Mystery Date."
The horizon of the future, i.e., the later '60s, is getting much darker, and a lot closer. New York City has slid past its peak, at which it glittered as the series began. Things increasingly don't work, we're seeing some people who look rather unkempt. And they're not the hippies, because those folks have yet to arrive.
Incidentally, you can see all my Mad Men pieces, going back to 2009, here in The Mad Men File.
It's mid-July 1966. The worst things are happening elsewhere, but they're getting closer. Richard Speck raped and murdered eight student nurses in Chicago, and race riots have cropped up in the Windy City as well. Much of the Mad Men crew...

Don Draper's fever dream on Sunday night's episode of Mad Men demonstrates just how deeply the show will go to reveal the psychological void of its damaged lead character.
The episode, called "Mystery Date," got great mileage out of its title. Although it more obviously refers to a commercial product advertised on television that catches the eye of Don's daughter Sally, it makes a much darker impact later in the episode. The mystery date turns out to be a female whom Don was once involved with, and who comes to him in a dream.
In the early part of the episode, that same woman bumps into Don in an elevator with current wife Megan by his side. Megan -- she knows about her husband's randy history and calls his modus operandi a "careless appetite" -- is none too pleased with this elevator interaction.

Mad Men "Mystery Date" -- An Expert Opinion
"Megan, meet my previous life. Previous life..."
“The evil that men do lives after them,” Act Three, Scene Two, Julius Caesar by William Shakespeare.
“There’s my Don Draper. I like him when he’s a cad.” My wife, Sunday April 9th, 2012.
As has become standard operating procedure for Mad Men, the third episode of the season marks a dramatic turn for the characters and a sign that the creative team behind the show has hit their stride.
In Season One, “Marriage of Figaro” opened with Don sniffing at the Volkswagen Lemon ad and then pinwheeling after an old war buddy called him Dick Whitman. In Season Two, Don fell off the monogamy wagon in “The Benefactor”. Season Three saw Don swap stories and Old Fashioneds with an intriguing older man who turns out to be Conrad Hilton of the Hilton family...

"Mad Men" sent us on a "Mystery Date" this week and it was one trippy ride, what with Don's fevered imaginings and all.
But, really, even though Don was busy trying to kill off his hound dog past, this episode was all about the "Mad Men" women.
Peggy showed that she's not afraid of Roger Sterling (although who is these days?), Joan kicked her rape-y husband to the curb and little Sally got scared back into childhood for just a little bit longer.

Mad Men has never been about happy endings. Or even happy lives. Things are shit all around. Either you have to deal with it or pretend that everything is rosy. A lot of people prefer the latter, which is pretty much leads us to Don Draper (Jon Hamm), The King of Illusions. In “Mystery Date”, his illusions crash into his reality and things think a dark, nasty turn. And though it may have been (Spoiler Alert!) completely fake, we finally get to see his inner monologue, courtesy of a Sopranos-like fever dream.
One of the biggest illusions during the Mad Men-set era — and in every era — is the illusion that violence solves everything. Particularly violence committed by men. It’s a means to an end that never gets the full results one is looking for. Does it actually do away with a perceived threat? Does it make a man more of a man?...

"Mystery Date" is all about women and violence. Peggy's artsy Time photo editor friend Joyce comes in with crime scene pics from the Chicago student nurse massacre where Richard Speck kidnapped nine nurses and murdered eight. One girl survived because she hid under the bed and he lost count. This happened on July 14th, 1966 so it's July 15, only about ten days since we left off last week. Mystery Date was also a popular board game with a popular commercial in 1965 -- the one Sally's watching while Pauline discusses the murders on the phone (see below). To play the game, girls would open different doors to find different mystery dates, with the hope of scoring a hunk, not a dud.
This children's game contrasts the romantic innocence of girls looking for a fantasy with the sobering reality of what else could be behind that door. The murders buzz in the background...

Mad Men, Season 5, Episode 4: “Mystery Date”
Written by Victor Levin & Matthew Weiner
Directed by Matt Shakman
Airs Sundays at 9pm (Et) on AMC
Set against the tense landscape of Richard Speck’s, July 1966 rapes and killings, and the ever-present specter of the Vietnam War, ‘Mystery Date’ is without doubt the strongest episode produced by the show to date.
Exploring the untenable nature of desire and its encompassing issues, the fourth episode blends wonderfully measured suspense, subtle humour and adorns it with an understated, but perfectly scored soundscape. The overwhelming, foreboding tension affords this episode uniqueness amongst the Mad Men pantheon. Pardoning the cliché, ‘Mystery Date’ can literally be described as heart-poundingly suspenseful and should receive due praise come Emmy nod time.
This week, Don is plagued by both a cough that won’t dissipate and as Megan describes it – his “careless appetite” for other women. Following Betty’s cancer scare last week,...

When did Mad Men become a horror movie?
Set against the backdrop of panic caused by Richard Speck's 1966 massacre of eight nursing students in Chicago, Sunday's episode, "Mystery Date," was filled with chills (a strangulation, things that go bump in the night at the Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce offices, grandma Pauline's butcher knife) and at least one thrill (Joan finally shipping her husband off to Vietnam for good).
Mad Men creator on Season 5 premiere: Megan has power over Don

Set against the backdrop of panic caused by Richard Speck's 1966 massacre of eight nursing students in Chicago, Sunday's episode, "Mystery Date," was filled with chills (a strangulation, things that go bump in the night at the Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce offices, grandma Pauline's butcher knife) and at least one thrill (Joan finally shipping her husband off to Vietnam for good).

"Mystery Date," last night's episode of "Mad Men," closed with The Crystals controversial ode to love and abuse "He Hit Me (And It Felt Like A Kiss)," a fitting theme song for an episode all about the dark things that lurk in the night or in our own subconscious. Longtime Mad Men viewers got quite a payoff this week, as our Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce favorites reverted to unfaithful form (kinda), reflected on how far they’ve come (but weren’t sure they wanted to go farther), and finally kicked an unresolved plot point from three seasons ago back to Vietnam where it belongs (hallelujah!). And all we had to do in exchange was become privy to some truly gruesome details about one of the most heinous murders of the ’60s. Fair trade. Let’s take a look at the major developments from “Mystery Date,” shall we?
