There’s nothing IndieWire loves more than directors talking about their favorite movies. So, of course, we took notice when, in late 2023, Turner Classic Movies started looping in directors to share their favorites from TCM’s lineup each month: Steven Spielberg’s TCM picks kicked things off, then Martin Scorsese waxed rhapsodic about “Madonna of the Seven Moons,” and Guillermo del Toro gushed about the greatness of Alfred Hitchcock’s “Suspicion.”
Now Chris Columbus is sharing his own TCM picks, along with some especially insightful anecdotes. Watch the video above.
Columbus starts off sharing his love of “Singin’ in the Rain”: “An amazing, almost flawless movie. You can say that about very few movies. I showed ‘Singin’ in the Rain’ to my 16-month-old granddaughter who was absolutely absorbed in the musical numbers. Moreso than any Disney animated films. I go back to it once or twice a year.

“Please Please Me” was an early hit for The Beatles, but it might not have made it far in its original form. According to Beatles producer George Martin, the initial version of the song was slow and dull. When he pointed this out to the band, they felt embarrassed that they hadn’t noticed.
The Beatles’ producer embarrassed the band when he asked them to change ‘Please Please Me’
When The Beatles first played “Please Please Me” for Martin, he could scarcely keep from yawning. They wanted it on the first single, but he thought it was too boring as it stood.
“In the first year, I had the final decision on songs, but they persuaded me to let them have their own songs on both sides of their first single,” Martin said in The Beatles Anthology. “I was still thinking that we should release their recording of ‘How Do You Do It.

Law & Order has had a rotating roster of actors through its many years on air and various spin-offs. But there was one familiar actor on the show who was admittedly brought on for the sake of eye candy.
This actor was brought on to replace Angie Harmon because of her looks Elisabeth Rohm and Sam Waterson | Jessica Burstein/NBCUniversal/Getty Images
Law & Order fans may have fond memories of Harmon’s character Abbie Carmichael on the show. The actor portrayed the young Ada from seasons 9 to 11, while also making a guest appearance on the spin-off Svu. As is the case with many actors, Harmon left the show simply to pursue other career opportunities.
“I left Law and Order because I really honestly did want to do movies and did want to be a movie star since I was a little girl,” Harmon once said according to Cinema Confidential.

We all remember John Candy as one of the most lovable comedians to have ever stepped in front of the screen. So rare were his dramatic performances that many might be hard-pressed to name any (he really only dipped his toe through JFK and Only the Lonely). But if Stephen King had gotten his way, Candy would have starred in Thinner, which is about a man who gets a curse placed upon him that causes him to lose weight at a deadly rate.
As noted on the commentary track of Shout! Factory’s upcoming Blu-ray release of Thinner (via CinemaBlend), producer Mitchell Galin revealed that King had the idea to cast Candy as Billy Halleck. However, there might have been an ulterior motive, but, jokingly, King pitched it. “We did reach out to [John] Candy’s people. Steve’s comment was like, ‘We’ll pay him a nice chunk of money,...

John Lennon‘s “(Just Like) Starting Over” was supposed to sound like one Elvis Presley song and one Roy Orbison song. During an interview, John said drawing inspiration from Elvis and Orbison was returning to his “roots.” Interestingly, Orbison said the song that inspired John had nothing to do with his personal emotional state.
John Lennon’s ‘(Just Like) Starting Over’ came from John’s ‘born again-rocker’ phase
The book Lennon on Lennon: Conversations With John Lennon contains excerpts from a Rolling Stone interview from 1980. Around the time John gave that interview, he released his song “(Just Like) Starting Over,” which is obviously indebted to the rock ‘n’ roll music of the 1950s and early 1960s. During the interview, John discussed the thought process behind the song. “All through the taping of ‘Starting Over,’ I was calling what I was doing ‘Elvis Orbison:’ ‘I want you I need only the lonely,...

It doesn’t take a genius to hear that John Lennon‘s “(Just Like) Starting Over” was inspired by Elvis Presley’s music. During an interview, John named the Elvis song and the Roy Orbison song that inspired “(Just Like) Starting Over.” He also revealed how much he was indebted to both artists.
John Lennon’s ‘(Just Like) Starting Over’ paid homage to Elvis Presley and ‘Only the Lonely’
During a 1980 Rolling Stone interview recorded in the book Lennon on Lennon: Conversations With John Lennon, John discussed the genesis of “(Just Like) Starting Over.” “All through the taping of ‘Starting Over,’ I was calling what I was doing ‘Elvis Orbison:’ ‘I want you I need only the lonely,'” he said. His words were a clear callback to Elvis’ “I Want You, I Need You, I Love You” and Roy Orbison’s “Only the Lonely,” two songs that influenced “(Just Like) Starting Over.

The music industry works in mysterious ways. John Lennon’s tragic death in 1980 might have catapulted one of his songs to No. 1 in the United States. The song in question was a tribute to the early rockers Elvis Presley and Roy Orbison.
A John Lennon song hit No. 1 the week after he died
There was a five-year gap between John’s 1975 covers album Rock ‘n’ Roll and his final album, Double Fantasy. The lead single from Double Fantasy was “(Just Like) Starting Over.” That gap would have led to plenty of anticipation for new music from the “Imagine” singer.
According to Stereogum, “(Just Like) Starting Over” was No. 6 on the Billboard Hot 100 the last day of John’s life. The following week, it hit No. 1. Stereogum theorizes “(Just Like) Starting Over” would have climbed to the top even if John had lived. After all, many Paul McCartney songs hit No.

Exclusive: Oscar-shortlisted Panamanian filmmaker Abner Benaim (Plaza Catedral) is gearing up to direct a feature adaptation of Nemesis, the final bestseller by Philip Roth to be published prior to the famed author’s 2018 passing.
Dealing with such timely themes as an epidemic and antisemitism, Nemesis was described in The New Yorker as having “the elegance of a fable and the tragic inevitability of a Greek drama.” The novel published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt in October of 2010 is set in the summer of 1944, examining the impact of a polio epidemic on a Newark, NJ community and its children.
Peter Glanz (The Longest Week) adapted the screenplay. Pablo Larraín, Juan de Dios Larraín and Andrew Hevia will produce for Fabula — the production company behind Foreign Language Oscar winner A Fantastic Woman, the Kristen Stewart starrer Spencer, and the upcoming drama Maria starring Angelina Jolie. Fernando Loureiro produces for Tigresa.

It’s 10pm on Monday 11 February 1963, and as the Abbey Road clock ticks down the final minutes of an exhausting 12-hour session, John Lennon strips to the waist, doses up on Zubes throat lozenges and throws himself into one final death-or-glory charge into rock’n’roll history.
“The last song nearly killed me,” he’d say later, recalling that last-minute take of “Twist and Shout”, which The Beatles managed to squeeze into the closing seconds of the one-day recording session for their debut album Please Please Me. A second take was abandoned as Lennon’s voice gave out altogether after a full day of howling and harmonising, powering through on throat sweets, milk and the ferocious Hamburg spirit that had seen them through countless late-night rock’n’roll marathons at the Kaiserkeller. “My voice wasn’t the same for a long time after,” he said. “Every time I swallowed it was like sandpaper.

Amazon’s Prime Video is in negotiations to acquire a John Candy documentary from Colin Hanks and Ryan Reynolds, TheWrap has confirmed.
Hanks, son of Tom Hanks and star of “Life in Pieces,” “Orange County” and “A Friend of the Family,” will direct the project while Reynolds, star of “Deadpool,” “Free Guy” and “The Adam Project,” will produce alongside George Dewey via his Maximum Effort production company.
The documentary feature will explore John Candy’s life and career, including starring roles in “The Great Outdoors,” “Spaceballs,” “Planes, Trains and Automobiles,” “Uncle Buck” and “Cool Runnings.” The actor was on the verge of establishing himself as a comic actor who could also handle dramatic roles in weightier fare like “Only the Lonely” and Oliver Stone’s “JFK” when he died in 1994 of a heart attack at the age of 43.

Though not exactly a darling of the critics, Oscar nominee Chris Columbus has created a number of box office hits throughout his 30 year career. Let’s take a look back at all 15 of his films as a director, ranked worst to best.
Born in 1958, Columbus rose to prominence as a hot young screenwriter after penning such titles as “Gremlins” (1984), “The Goonies” (1985) and “Young Sherlock Holmes” (1985). He made his directorial debut when he was just 29-years-old with the teenage comedy “Adventures in Babysitting” (1987) before raking in the box office dollars with “Home Alone” (1990), “Mrs. Doubtfire” (1993) and “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone” (2001), to name but a few.
Though he’s seldom received awards recognition as a writer or director, Columbus has had success in that regard as a producer, earning an Oscar nomination in Best Picture for “The Help” (2011), for which he also competed at the PGA and BAFTA. He won...

At the risk of invoking a cliché, “Only the Lonely” feels like the kind of movie they just don’t make anymore: a modest, unassuming, character-driven comedy/drama but produced and released by a major studio, and featuring a major star (John Candy) playing somewhat against type. Yet even when it was released, 30 years ago this week, “Only the Lonely” was a long shot – a blank check project, as they say these days, written by Fox as a reward for the massive success of “Home Alone.” That film was written and produced by John Hughes and directed by Chris Columbus; this one was produced by Hughes, and written and directed by Columbus.

Only the Lonely: Chase Explores Childhood Traumas in Effective Horror Film
The alienating effects of miscommunication with autistic loved ones is usually the stomping ground of subgenre melodrama, so utilizing the situation as a backdrop for Come Play, the sophomore feature from director Jacob Chase, is indeed a welcome exploration.
Adapted from his own 2017 short film “Larry,” it evokes a tradition of Spielbergian elements of the 70s and 80s, wherein troubled families find their resiliency tested through interaction with either extraterrestrial or supernatural elements.
Like a dark fairy tale, the usual tactics eventually prevail, as Chase utilizes the most innate weapon in the familial arsenal, but it’s a deservedly effective take cobbling together familiar elements for a contemporary genre film, bolstered by strong performances and impressive special effects.…...

Abrams is currently looking for a new home at a studio that will pretty much give him the freedom to do and make whatever the hell he wants. It makes sense that he’d be adding a bunch of new projects to his slate that will make the deal more lucrative.
Variety offers some details on these projects and talent involved.

“Some years I’m the coolest thing that ever happened, and then the next year everyone’s so over me,” Cher told Rolling Stone in 1999. She had just released “Believe,” which set the record for longest gap between Number Ones on Billboard’s Hot 100, a milestone that stands to this day. She joins many other big names — from the Beach Boys to Aretha Franklin and Meat Loaf — on our list of artists who mixed up a cocktail of fortitude, talent and luck to fight their way back onto the charts...

At one point, Ron McMaster, Capitol Studios’ renowned vinyl mastering engineer, was thinking about retiring because he wasn’t busy enough. Now, at last, he’s really and truly retiring… because he’s too busy.
McMaster, 69, revealed his plans to Variety on the eve of invitations going out for a July 12 retirement party in the Capitol tower that promises to draw bold-faced names that usually appear higher in the album credits than his own. A favorite of producers like Don Was and T Bone Burnett, he has cut LPs for the Beach Boys, Rolling Stones, Radiohead and virtually the entire vintage Blue Note catalog.
In the basement of a building shaped to resembled a stack of vinyl, he’s been at work mastering CDs as well as LPs for 38 years. But it’s vinyl he’s most associated with, and that medium’s wild resurgence over the last decade has...

(Warning: There will be spoilers) When Charlie McDowell’s mysterious film The Discovery debuted at Sundance last January, its distributor, Netflix, premiered a teaser trailer along with it — a good strategy, considering the film’s intriguing premise (that science has proven the existence of an afterlife) and its abundance of plot twists. No spoilers, please! A beautiful piece of promotion for a dark sci-fi romance ostensibly about life after death but essentially about a person looking for his soul mate, the teaser uses Roy Orbison’s “Only the Lonely” for an 88-second music-driven montage (a song not used in the film but well-suited for […]...

Is there life after death? It doesn’t explicitly say so in this trailer, but The Discovery apparently posits that, yes, there is, and here’s some math showing how. When we previously reported on the upcoming Netflix film, all we knew about it was that Jason Segel had joined the project to play Rooney Mara’s love interest, a man who “somehow scientifically proves that there’s an afterlife.” (Robert Redford, Jesse Plemons, and Riley Keough are also part of the cast.) Mara’s character also reportedly has a “tragic past,” but if the above trailer is any indication, her present is looking pretty damn troubled, as well. The strains of Roy Orbison’s “Only The Lonely” kick things off, paired with images that conjure up your standard twee indie romantic drama, albeit one populated by very famous people. Which lasts for 30 seconds, when the music shudders, and ...

An official biopic of Roy Orbison has been confirmed...
Roy Orbison’s estate will cooperate with The Big O, a new biopic based on the life of the man who wrote 'Pretty Woman', 'Running Scared', 'In Dreams' and 'Only the Lonely'.
Roy Orbison was made for movies. That pallor. Those sunglasses. David Lynch saw it and Dennis Hopper channeled it. Roy Orbison was a mystery man, who never showed his eyes after losing his wife Claudette, who haunted his songs. Actually, Roy lost his regular, Buddy Holly style glasses on a tour bus with the Beatles when they opened for him in the UK. He kept both the shades and his friendship with George Harrison. They even formed a band together with Bob Dylan, Tom Petty and Jeff Lynne.

Maureen O’Hara, the flame-haired Irish movie star who appeared in classics ranging from the grim “How Green Was My Valley” to the uplifting “Miracle on 34th Street” and bantered unforgettably with John Wayne in several films. She was 95.
O’Hara died in her sleep at her home in Boise, Idaho, said Johnny Nicoletti, her longtime manager.
O’Hara received an Honorary Award at the 2014 Governors Awards.
“She passed peacefully surrounded by her loving family as they celebrated her life listening to music from her favorite movie, ‘The Quiet Man,'” said a statement from her family.
“As an actress, Maureen O’Hara brought unyielding strength and sudden sensitivity to every role she played. Her characters were feisty and fearless, just as she was in real life. She was also proudly Irish and spent her entire lifetime sharing her heritage and the wonderful culture of the Emerald Isle with the world,...

Last week the Internet had a collective heart attack as it became apparent that the anniversary of the day that "The Breakfast Club" is supposed to take place happened 31 years earlier. Of course, "The Breakfast Club" is a movie and not a historical document (one that came out 30 years ago), but that doesn't matter. Because talking about John Hughes's immortal classic is fun and people will do it at every conceivable juncture.
"The Breakfast Club," of course, starred Emilio Estevez, Anthony Michael Hall, Judd Nelson, Molly Ringwald, and Ally Sheedy, as a group of disparate teens united for a Saturday's worth of detention (Paul Gleason very memorably essayed the role of the meddling principle -- "I make over $30,000 a year!"). Recently, to celebrate the movie's anniversary and commemorate the newly released (and truly incredible deluxe edition Blu-ray package), the film held a pair of screenings in Austin, Texas, as...

This year's ceremony is being held this Saturday evening, November 8, in the Ray Dolby Ballroom at Hollywood & Highland Center in Hollywood. For the last couple of years, Maureen O'Hara has been a Boise, Idaho, resident. Before that, the 94-year-old movie veteran -- born Maureen FitzSimons, on August, 17, 1920, in Dublin -- had been living in Ireland. Below is a brief recap of her movies. The next big thing from Bungie has finally arrived, and it's time to see if Destiny is more than Halo with a new paint job...
Regardless of your opinion of Halo or Call Of Duty, one thing can't be disputed – both games play brilliantly. They're fast, fluid, have beautifully tight controls, and gunplay that's amongst the best we've ever seen. Destiny, coming from the makers of Halo, of course, falls into this category.
Right from the off it's easy to see why Bungie's previous Fps titan has gained so many fans. Destiny doesn't only look great, but it feels great too. This is a polished Fps, and you'll instantly feel at home and in control. Yes, it feels very much like Halo, there's no denying that, but that's no bad thing, as Halo was a fine Fps in its own right. Destiny, on the other hand, adds a whole heap of new features,...

For the first two or three years of the now six-year-old Governors Awards, I regularly wrote a column “suggesting” who I considered to be a deserving choice for Honorary Oscars, people who have been overlooked in their fields over the years.
Related: Big Names, Deserving Recipients For 2013 Governors Awards
On every one of those lists, three names would appear: Angela Lansbury, Maureen O’Hara and screenwriter Jean-Claude Carriere. Last year, thankfully, the Academy finally got around to recognizing Lansbury with an Honorary Oscar, and now with today’s earlier announcement the AMPAS Board Of Governors has wisely chosen Carriere and O’Hara along with the great (but already Oscar-winning) Japanese animation director Hayao Miyazaki and Harry Belafonte, the way-overdue Jean Hersholt Humanitarian honoree this year. This is an excellent list for an award that is given for an entire career. Some might quibble about Miyazaki because he actually won an...

Amidst all the happy endings as True Blood concluded its seven-year run, Pam’s was perhaps the happiest. Kristin Bauer van Straten talked to EW about Pam and Eric’s final scenes, the way the crew tortured her throughout the season, and what Pam’s reaction would have been to Eric (Alexander Skarsgard) and Ginger (Tara Buck) finally having sex had we seen it. And yes, she cried.
EW: It feels like in the end, Pam gets Eric back to herself.

Hard to believe it's been 30 years since the Griswold family first took to the road in "National Lampoon's Vacation." Ever since its release on July 29, 1983, the landmark comedy seems a permanent fixture of pop culture, having created the signature roles of Chevy Chase, Beverly D'Angelo, and Randy Quaid's careers, having helped make stars out of Anthony Michael Hall and Jane Krakowski, and having helped launch the filmmaking career of John Hughes. The movie seems to play on an endless loop on TV, like the neighbors' slideshow of a nightmarish trip you were grateful not to have taken yourself. (Except, let's face it, you probably have a family road trip this disastrous in your past.)
Still, as many times as you've seen the film, there are some details you may have missed. Read on to learn about the in-jokes you haven't spotted, the scenes you didn't get to see,...

In this guest post, Eaon Pritchard argues why adland should bring an end to its obsession with newness.
I don’t know if Frank Sinatra ever actually wrote a song in his puff. But it’s hard to argue that, as an artist, his blues-inflected saloon balladeer ouvre (particularly his mid-50s period circa ‘Only The Lonely’) pretty much wrote the book of sharp American masculine cool, and with significant sex, style, subversion and skill to boot.
Sinatra’s ability to interpret a song, and take it somewhere else was his art. It was not necessary for him to have been the originator of the material.
As a young guitar slinger in the early 80s I was the principle tunesmith in several bands. (None of these particularly made it, but that’s not what this story is about.)

The director of Interview with a Hitman on how he learnt to balance his own vision with the realities of getting a project off the ground
I didn't do a lot of planning before I embarked on making my first short film over twenty years ago. What was my plan? Who was the audience? How was I going to get it out there? I asked myself none of these questions – I just felt an overwhelming desire to make a film. So, aged 23, with a head still full of the deconstructed symbolism of David Lynch's films (on which I did my masters dissertation) I embarked on an almost dialogue-free, black and white, metaphorical allegory. A year later, having roped in friends and family, and performing almost every role during the production, Only the Lonely was born – written, directed, edited, sound designed, mixed and mastered by Perry Bhandal.

The 2nd annual PollyGrind assaults Las Vegas during an epic length film festival that runs Oct. 8-17 at Theatre 7 with enough sleaze and violence to make Sin City residents feel right at home.
Actually, the fest does open up on the 7th with a concert at Neon Venus with local acts like Monster Zero, Creepersin and many more.
However, the film portion of the fest opens on the 8th with Stuart Simpson‘s acclaimed Australian gorefest El Monstro Del Mar!, one of the best Russ Meyer/Roger Corman mash-ups with a Down Under twist. Read the Bad Lit: The Journal of Underground Film review of this gem here.
Other Bad Lit favorites in the lineup are Drew Bolduc and Dan Nelson‘s The Taint, which is still completely grossing out audiences on the festival circuit, and The Uh-Oh Show, the splatter-filled horror comedy by the Godfather of Gore himself Herschell Gordon Lewis.

Warning: Kick-Ass spoilers follow. If you haven't seen the film, you may want to avoid reading further.
There were only three things that truly shocked me about Kick-Ass. Only one of those pearl-clutching moments was due to the film's violence. The other was the way it dealt with sex. Shocked may be the wrong word for it -- disappointed would be more accurate.
Kick-Ass introduces us to a very typical 16 year-old boy, Dave Lizewski. There's already been a bit of digital ink spilled about the wadded-up Kleenex the film (and its making of book) proudly dwells on. It was a deliberate toilet humor moment that might have been a little more effective if the same joke hadn't been made in the Adam Sandler trailer that preceded my showing. Lizewski's hormones are rampant. He has no outlet. We're shown and told.
Lizewski also reads comic books. Obviously, this is no surprise.

When we quiet and polite Canadians first began planning our non-violent take-over of Pajiba I breezily volunteered to do a Famous Canadians list. How difficult could it be to pick 10 Canadians who were famous for being more than just incredibly polite motherfuckers? Seventeen hours and eleventy billion Google hits later it became apparent that it was much more difficult than you bitches think. We've managed to smuggle, I mean introduce, a helluva lot of Canadians into the Us over the years and while some of them stick out like wearing a toque on a hot summer day, others have managed to blend in so well even I was surprised to discover they were one of us. So, in order to whittle my list down to 10 I decided to only include people who were universally recognized as Canadians.
And yeah, I realize there are famous Canadians out there other than actors (hello Frank Gehry!
