His career is a testament to the pervasive appeal of ghazal, for Pankaj Udhas, among the foremost who brought the perceived elitist genre of music into the popular sphere, hailed well beyond its prime catchment area, but mastered the form with dedication and performed it with panache.
Pankaj Udhas, who passed away on Monday aged 72, is usually – and erroneously – seen as a purveyor of the ghazal’s “maikhana” tradition.
This is chiefly due to his famous renditions of “Mujhko yaaron muaaf karna, main nashe mein hoon”, “Thodi thodi piya karo”,”Sharab cheez hi aisi”, “Ek taraf us ka ghai ek taraf maikada”, “Sabko maloom hai main sharabi nahi” and several other vintage melodies, but there was more range to his velvet-rounded voice.
Recall the ebullient “Chandi jaisa rang hain tera”, the pensive “Kabhi saaya hai kabhi dhoop” or “Aap jinke kareeb hote hai”, the lightly mournful “Deewaron se milkar rona...

Bollywood's dancing diva Madhuri Dixit Nene, a judge on reality TV show "Dance Deewane" -- which will have talent from three different age groups competing for a title -- says age should not come in the way of one's talent.
The show, in its second season, has 'Yahan deewangi nahi kisi ki kam... Dekhenge kis generation mein hai Dum' as its core philosophy.
It's a family show by all means, said Madhuri.
"I believe that age cannot and should not restrict someone to dance. Earlier in other dance shows, usually children would participate and the parents would watch the performance as a part of the audience."
"With this show, we are breaking that norm and the whole family gets to participate... from three generations -- the kids, their parents as well as grandparents. This year, we have got so much active participation from the elder generation because they have...

Bareilly Ki Barfi
Starring Ayushmann Khurana, Rajkummar Rao, Kriti Sanon
Directed by Ashiwini Iyer Tiwari
Early in the plot, we are told that the film’s heroine Bitti is no Sati Savitri. Thank God for small town mercies! In fact she adheres to another kind of stereotyping that Hindi cinema has lately embraced. You know, the small town girl who is hip and happy, sassy and sexy, rides two-wheelers and smokes whenever she can get her hands on a cancer stick, and when a prospective groom asks her if she is a virgin Bitti retorts, “No I am not… are you?”
Ah, long live the virgin bride.
Bitti is from the same feisty school of small-town rebellion as Kareena Kapoor in Jab We Met, Kangana Ranaut in Tanu Weds Manu and Alia Bhatt in Badrinath Ki Dulhaniya. In fact, what Bitti thinks to be streaks of rebellion (breakdancing, watching angrezi films,...

There is just something magical about seeing your favourite celebrity perform live for you on stage. There is this connection as they dance sing or even just speak on stage that brightens up the night and mesmerises us. Now add in 5 big names on 1 stage and you get the Da-Bangg Tour.

Bollywood had an interesting year of music, whether it was A.R.Rahman delivering a cohesive soundtrack in Tamasha or Amit Trivedi conjuring up the jazz and swing sounds of Bombay’s jazz age in Bombay Velvet. There was also less pressure on one music director to deliver when multiple artists contributed to the film’s hits like Roy’s ‘Chittiyaan Kalaiyaan’ by Meet Bros, and ‘Sooraj Dooba Hai’ by Amaal Mallik. 2015 was definitely a year for experimentation for music directors, which we completely appreciated including the retro albums like Prem Ratan Dhan Payo with the title track capturing the nation on Dubsmash. Read on for our picks of the year, and let us know what your faves were.

After his debut he impressed with his roles in films like Maine Pyaar Kiya, Hum Aapke Hain Koun, Saajan, Karan Arjun, Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam, Phir Milenge, Tere Naam and Khamoshi. It is where hearts meet, auntyjis gossip and kids have a blast. Navratri shin-digs are the ‘it’ get togethers in the Desi calendar every year. It’s a nine day long festive period where everyone joins in daily for a night of song and dance. Apart from being the social get together of the year the festival has a strong religious meaning. It celebrates nine forms of Goddess Durga, one on each night, hence the name nav-nine ratri-nights. The 10th day is the festival of Dashera, marking the ultimate triumph of good over evil in Indian history.
Unlike any other usual festival, navratri songs and dance are specific. They have a distinct beat and the dance form adopted is garba or dandiya. The song and dance routine of the night, garba or dandiya, also have a strong historical backing as depicts the rasa-lila between Lord Krishna and the gopis of Vrindavan.

Sanjeev Srivastava was brought in to create the musical world of Revolver Rani and with the songs to make the story come alive. So how did he fare? Read on to find out!
The beginning sounds of the title track Revolver Rani was not promising because I kept checking to see if my computer was somehow skipping…sadly no, it is just the song. It gets better when the track transforms to an Usha Uthup jazz showcase and she is brilliant – of course. There are a couple...

Over the past few weeks, the Toronto International Film Festival (Tiff) began unveiling the films that will feature as part of this year’s festival line-up. Although this year features fewer films from India and the Indian diaspora (not surprising since last year’s focus on Mumbai in the City to City programme gave viewers an incredibly rich line-up of films), there are, still, some wonderful viewing opportunities in store for South Asian film fans at Tiff 2013.
Two Indian films will receive Gala Premieres this year. The festival will present the North American Premiere of The Lunchbox, written and directed by Ritesh Batra. The film, which was well received at this year’s Cannes film festival, traces the unexpected friendship that develops between two strangers, middle-class housewife Ila and lonely office worker Saajan, after a mix up in the delivery of a lunchbox intended for Ila’s husband.
