Cougar Town: Watch the Season 3 Highlight Reel
After nearly a year off the air, it's time for the Cul-de-sac Crew to make their return. Cougar Town last aired in May 2011 and since that time, was left off both the fall and midseason schedules. After a series of live screenings/meet and greets, loud fan complaints about the delay, and the cancellation of much-reviled Work It, the show will be back, only this time not following Modern Family.
It may have been a long journey to getting on the air for Cougar Town's third season, but in a little more than a week, the next 15 episodes in the lives of Jules, Ellie, Travis, Laurie, Grayson, Andy, and Dog Travis will be making their debut. Ahead of the season premiere, a (spoiler-y) highlight reel has been released of some of the season's upcoming gags and plot developments.

16. The Killing: I'm dropping this week's "The Killing" to the last spot to highlight a statement: AMC duped us. They gave us a dreary, rain-soaked landscape; good actors; and deliberate, meticulous pacing. They provided the illusion of intelligence. And then "The Killing" revealed itself for what it actually is: A standard criminal procedure, only the beats and turns have been drawn out 13-fold. Take any typical episode of "Castle," and expand it out, slow it down, and pad it with filler, and you've got "The Killing." (Spoilers) This week, the show completely erased the last four, maybe five, episodes of the investigation. That was the 9th episode, and in the 10th episode, we start again from square one. Cheap move, AMC.
15. Chuck: The season finale was slightly better than the trite, predicable episodes they've been parading out in front of us this season, but not by much. I am,...

I’ll come right out and say it, "Free Fallin'"left me on the floor.
I’ve said this before, but I'll say it again, Cougar Town is at its best when character growth comes along with the comedy. Last night’s episode is another great example.
I’ve always been a fan of the relationship Travis and Jules have, but I’m glad Jules put her foot down with him. Travis shouldn’t have manipulated her like he did (hard to believe considering Jules loves when he “needs” her).
I understand where Travis is coming from after Kirsten broke his heart. He needed some time to put it back together. Is putting your entire life on hold the way to do it? Probably not, but we’ve all made stupid decisions at some (or multiple) points in life.
I applaud Jules’ decision to kick Travis out of the house.

Much like the beginning of last week’s episode of We Should Have Live Cougars On Cougar Town, Travis was still hanging out in the dark mourning the loss of Kirsten. He hadn’t even been going to college. It was a Travisty. (See what I did there?) But breakups are hard. It took Jules a year to bounce back after she and Bobby split up, and it was the worst weekend of Bobby’s life.
Travis finally admitted that college might not be right for him after he was caught lying about being on spring break. So Jules gave...

Unfortunately, I don’t have a council at my disposal for this review so you’ll have to do with me.
"Lonesome Sundown" was the type of Cougar Town episode that elevates itself from the rest for me. One where the comedy is great but the emotional arcs and relationships between the characters also prosper.
It’s one of the reasons why I believe Friends was so successful and why I’ve come to love Cougar Town so much.
The Council is one of the funniest gags the show has done since Penny Can. It was a great way to mess with each other and offered us the greatness that is Jules being forced to spend the weekend on Bobby’s boat.
Seriously, watching Jules eventually embrace her inner Bobby was comedy gold and the cherry on top was her pulling forward in the golf cart. I couldn’t stop laughing.

There's a reason why, instead of doing full-fledged reviews of 'Cougar Town,' I just concentrate on moments: it's because, in a lot of ways, each episode is organized as a series of moments, rather than one with an A-story and a B-story.
Sure, there has been the recent through-line of Travis and his quest to get his girlfriend Kirsten to stay by asking her to marry him. But the rest of each episode is generally distinguished by its easygoing hilarity.
I'm talking about scenes like Bobby and Andy sumo wrestling in Jules' house, or Grayson's schoolgirl-like crush over Lou Diamond Phillips, or Laurie getting a tiny wine glass named "Little Richard" as punishment for creating "The Council," which served as a kangaroo court for the Cul de Sac Crew. So the review becomes more about which scenes were funny than about how the series is progressing.

The headline says it all. The Cobbs can get through anything! I know you’re (probably) not a Cobb, but I have faith you can make it through this recap. So let’s chat “sorry, we still cringe at the title” Cougar Town.
Kirsten was officially planning her move to Chicago. Since locking her to a pipe with a chain was not a valid option, Travis furthered his plan to propose with his great-grandmother’s ring. I must note the rejected plans: 1) Skipping the ring altogether and putting a baby in her. 2) Pimp-whacking her over the head. Yeah, a proposal was really his only option.

Our long national wait for the next new Cougar Town is almost over. The show returns with two episodes this week — one tonight after Dancing With the Stars, and one in its regular Wednesday time slot. Tonight’s episode has Bobby (Brian Van Holt) and Laurie (Busy Philipps) partnering for a business venture to bring “Penny Can” to the masses. Viewers will be able to dial a working phone number for details on how to purchase their own “Bobby Cobb Official Competition Penny Can” — and for a chance to speak to a member of the cast or one of the creators.

You may have heard that Lou Diamond Phillips is guest-starring on "Cougar Town" later this season. We now have photographic proof.
Phillips plays himself in the episode scheduled for Wednesday, May 4. He's a customer of Grayson's (Josh Hopkins).
To say more would be venturing into spoiler territory, which we don't want to do. But we can tell you that the Phillips-Grayson story is a subplot in the episode, which centers on Jules (Courteney Cox) trying to take a step back while Travis (Dan Byrd) makes a big decision. We're sure that goes well. The crew also sets up a "council" to mete out punishment in an effort to stop taking each other for granted.
We can also offer up a couple more of Phillips' appearance. Whatever it is that Grayson's peddling, it appears Phillips is satisfied with it.
As for this one, we just like the goofy look on Hopkins' face.
