More than just a dramatist and storyteller, Oscar-winning director Ang Lee (“Brokeback Mountain”) is an innovator in the vein of James Cameron and has always been quick to test new filmmaking technologies. Lee has been eager to experiment with early motion capture technologies, as he did the mo-cap himself for his movie “The Hulk” and the exceptional 3D and CGI used in his acclaimed “Life of Pi.” More recently, the filmmaker embraced things like 3D and high frame rates in his films “Gemini Man” and “Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime Walk.” However, in a recent interview with IndieWire, the director said he’s soured on the technologies and won’t return to them anytime soon, specifically 3D.

Be it the next James Bond, Captain Britain, or Wolverine, Cavill seems to be topping everyone’s must-have cast list. While they’re mostly just rumors, it doesn’t stop his fans from picturing him star in their dream-come-true flick.
Given Cavill’s reputation as a hardcore gamer, it was only a matter of time before people pictured him in a Call of Duty movie. In 1971, just six years after Frank Herbert published his groundbreaking science-fiction novel "Dune," Arthur P. Jacobs' Apjac International obtained the rights to the story for a film adaptation. The producer behind "Planet of the Apes" was ready to craft another world set in a distant future, but with the sequel film "Beneath the Planet of the Apes" on its way, "Dune" was delayed.
Jacobs went through a handful of different directors and screenwriters in early development, but he tragically passed away in 1973. David Lynch would eventually bring "Dune" to the big screen in 1984, but there were multiple failed attempts that paved the way for his film and a remake in his wake that led to Denis Villeneuve's recent adaptations. The messy histories of failed "Dune" adaptations could justify their own feature-length documentaries but allow this to be a crash course on the bizarre "Dune" movies that never came to be.

"Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" is a fantastic return to classic "Star Trek" that uses its science fiction setting to create incredible allegories about our own world. "Billy Madison" is a very silly Adam Sandler movie from the 1990s about a man-child who has to go from kindergarten through high school in six months in order to inherit his father's business and fortune. They are as different from one another as can be, yet at least one "Strange New Worlds" episode is rather deeply connected to the sophomoric yet lovable absurdity of "Billy Madison." While they don't share anything in-universe and Adam Sandler has sadly never made a "Star Trek" appearance, eagle-eyed viewers might have recognized some similar sights in the background of both the movie and the season 1 "Strange New Worlds" episode, "Lift Us Where Suffering Cannot Reach."

Edward Zwick hasn’t released a film since 2018 but he is back in the news for calling out Brad Pitt for “volatile” behavior on the set of 1994’s Legends of the Fall, the movie that helped launch the actor into superstardom. Now, a source close to the production has come forward to try to dispel Zwick’s recollections of the events, even calling the director a publicity hound.
In Zwick’s upcoming book, “Hits, Flops, and Other Illusions: My Fortysomething Years in Hollywood”, the director recalled a scenario in which Pitt showed “discomfort” and later the aforementioned “volatile” nature. “Days before shooting, we held a table read. Given the script’s dependence on narration and visuals, it didn’t play very well in the sterile conference room. I could see Brad’s growing discomfort as it went on. Hours afterward, his agent called the studio to say Brad wanted to quit.

Beacon 23 will finally see the light of day this year.
Almost three years after being picked up by Spectrum Originals, MGM+ has stepped in to provide a home for the Lena Headey drama series.
The series will debut on Sunday, November 12, on MGM+ at 9:00 p.m. Est/Pst with the first two of eight episodes.
Zak Penn created the series and executive produced along with Glen Mazzara.
"Beacon 23 takes place in the farthest reaches of the Milky Way and follows Aster (Lena Headey), a government agent, and Halan (Stephan James), a stoic ex-military man, whose fates become entangled after they find themselves trapped together inside one of many Beacons that serve as a lighthouse for intergalactic travelers," according to the logline.
"Every Beacon is run by one highly trained human and a specialized Artificial Intelligence. Aster mysteriously finds her way to the lonely Beacon-keeper Halan, and a tense battle of wills unfolds.

The fourth season of "Stranger Things" was the definition of overstuffed; with multiple genres and settings and a sprawling cast of characters, the show stretched the boundaries of epic storytelling almost beyond its limitations. With more than a year of retrospect, some season 4 plotlines are forgettable, while others are still lodged firmly in our hearts and minds.
But no plot was as universally embraced as Max's, the heartbreaking depression storyline that put actor Sadie Sink's name in award show contention and catapulted Kate Bush's "Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God)" back up the charts. Max entered season 4 feeling broken, plagued by grief and survivor's guilt over her brother Billy's (Dacre Montgomery) death. In the fourth episode's emotional climax, she faced off against a hallucinated version of Billy possessed by the monster Vecna (Jamie Campbell Bower), and it was the most powerful moment of the season if not the entire series.

‘Dylan’s New Nightmare’ – Fan Film Sequel to ‘New Nightmare’ Starring Miko Hughes Is Worth Your Time
I have mixed feelings on fan films. I’d prefer to see indie filmmakers invest their resources in an original concept rather than someone else’s intellectual property, but I also understand the reality that content with an established fanbase guarantees more engagement. Moreover, when beloved properties like A Nightmare on Elm Street and Friday the 13th become entangled in ongoing legal disputes, fan films can sate viewers’ hunger for more.
Even if a new Elm Street movie is produced with Robert Englund as Freddy Krueger, it’s highly unlikely to acknowledge the events of New Nightmare, given its blurring of the lines between fiction and reality. (Freddy vs Jason ignored it as well.) YouTuber-turned-writer/director Cecil Laird teamed with producer Vincente Disanti — the filmmaker behind the popular Friday the 13th fan film Never Hike Alone — to fill that void with Dylan’s New Nightmare: A Nightmare on Elm Street Fan Film.

I remember clearly the first time I became aware of the name William Friedkin. I was 12 years old.
I used to wander around Manhattan a lot by myself in those days. I loved bookstores and hobby shops, and in particular I loved dingy places that sold strange collectibles. One Saturday, I entered such a spot — in this case, a movie memorabilia joint on Bleecker Street — and saw an enormous poster meant for display in subway stations. The image slapped me across the face: a truck in the pouring rain, leaning impossibly to the right on a rickety rope bridge ready for collapse. It said merely: “a William Friedkin Film, Sorcerer.”
What a mysterious and wonderful piece of art! I bought it (10 dollars, all I had on me) and posted it on my wall.
Soon after, I learned that this very same director had made a film showing at the Hollywood Twin,...

Spoiler Alert! This post contains details from Episode 8 of Prime Video’s Daisy Jones & The Six.
Episode 8 of Daisy Jones & The Six marks a turning point for Billy and Daisy, who up until this point have tried to avoid the obvious collision course they’ve set each other on.
“It’s you,” Riley Keough‘s Daisy says as she looks into the eyes of Billy Dunne (Sam Claflin), who is holding her on the floor of a hotel shower, moments after she’s woken up from a drug overdose. Then, the screen cuts to black and the credits roll.
Daisy had just returned from Greece with her new fiancé Nicky in tow, only to go even further off the rails when she hits the road again with the band. Minutes before he finds her passed out in the bathroom, Billy had been ready to kick her out of...

And then there was one. After David Arquette's Dewey Riley tragically bowed out in last year's fifth "Scream" installment and franchise icon Neve Campbell was unfortunately left out of the action this time around as Sidney Prescott, only one of the original trio is still around and available to be traumatized in the upcoming "Scream VI." (You can read /Film's review by Chris Evangelista here.) Courteney Cox's Gale Weathers has seen it all by this point, surviving multiple Ghostface attacks by multiple Ghostface killers -- oftentimes within the same movie. Though now far away from the deadly confines of Woodsboro and intent on selling her book in New York City, the past proves tricky to shake off completely.
Along with a very welcome familiar face in Hayden Panettiere's Kirby and the young returning cast from "Scream" (2022), Gale is apparently cursed to fend off Ghostface for the rest of her life.

Exclusive: Dark Star Pictures has snapped up North American rights to the Stephen King documentary King on Screen, examining cinematic adaptations of the iconic author’s works, out of EFM. The film from actress-turned-director Daphné Baiwir, which bears King’s stamp of approval, will hit theaters in late summer, with a digital release to follow in the fall.
King on Screen offers audiences an intimate sit-down with directors who have adapted King’s work for the screen, looking at the movies and shows that have brought his body of work an entirely new life — both the ones that reached the top-tier echelons of pop culture history and those that fell by the wayside into obscurity. Among those sitting down for interviews in the film, which world premiered at Fantastic Fest last year, are Frank Darabont, Mick Garris (ABC’s The Stand), Mike Flanagan and director and special makeup effects titan Greg Nicotero, to name a few.
King is, of course, a master of literary horror and of the bestselling authors of all time who has seen more than 80 features made based on his work. Next heading from his pages to the screen is the Rob Savage-directed horror-thriller The Boogeyman from 20th Century Studios and 21 Laps, which hits theaters on June 2nd. Among the most recent titles of his to have been picked up for adaptation is 2021’s Billy Summers, about a hitman set to take one last major job before retiring, which has landed at Warner Bros, as we told you first. Ed Zwick and Marshall Herskovitz are penning the script, with J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot and Leonardo DiCaprio’s Appian Way to produce.
Producers on King on Screen included Sebastien Cruz for Les Films de la Plage, Jean-Yves Roubin for Frakas Productions and Zoe Salmon for Mr Salmon Films, with the participation of Ocs.
“Daphné has done a spectacular job of showcasing the talented filmmakers who brought the work of Stephen King to life in moving images,” said Dark Star Pictures President, Michael Repsch. “As a lifelong King fan, I could not be more excited to bring this film to audiences across North America and have it as a part of the Dark Star family.”
Recent releases from the L.A.-based distributor Dark Star Pictures include the WWII epic Onoda: 10,000 Nights in the Jungle, Shinzô Katayama’s crime drama Missing, and the Tribeca-premiering drama Petit Mal. Other upcoming releases from the company include the Tim Roth vehicle Punch, Fantasia Grand Jury winner Megalomaniac, and the serial killer thriller Saturn Bowling from French auteur Patricia Mazuy.
Repsch negotiated the King on Screen deal for Dark Star Pictures, with Hugues Barbier, Justin Timms and Joe Yanick for Yellow Veil Pictures on behalf of the filmmakers.

In an upcoming series from Prime Video, a world-renowned band has a tumultuous time recording their most-famous record and is slowly torn apart by drama, trauma, jealousy, and drug use. Surprisingly, this isn't the premise for a "Fleetwood Mac" biopic — it's an adaptation of Taylor Jenkins Reid's bestselling novel, "Daisy Jones and the Six." Like the book, the series will tell the tale of a '70s band whose breakup makes them legends.
But it isn't all dashed dreams and broken hearts. Before the fall, there was a meteoric rise to fame. Billy Dunne (Sam Claflin) and Daisy Jones (Riley Keough) are two superstars in the making. Long before they've met, the separate artists are oozing talent. But sometimes it takes a little more than that to claim success and it isn't until they cross paths that stardom truly awaits. The 1990 song "Blaze of Glory" from the "Young Guns II" soundtrack is impossible to resist. I feel pretty confident in saying that, when you read the title of that song, it began playing in your head. In fact, you'll be singing it for the rest of the day, and if anyone else is around, they'll join in with the harmony. Maybe you, like a young version of me, watched the video repeatedly, admiring ... the music. I didn't mean the exceedingly good-looking Jon Bon Jovi himself. Okay, that's a lie, but the song really is pretty great. There is a reason it's performed at every karaoke bar, including the fictional one in the afterlife in "The Good Place."
What you might not have realized about the song you cannot stop singing now that I've mentioned it, is that it was written over dinner with two stars of the 1990 sequel to 1988's "Young Guns.

Cinematographer who brought his imaginative sensibilities to films such as Trainspotting, Billy Elliot and Quadrophenia
The cultural aesthetic of the Britpop and New Labour years was shaped partly by the cinematographer Brian Tufano, who has died aged 83. In films such as Trainspotting (1996), East Is East (1999) and Billy Elliot (2000), he combined social realism and absurdist fantasy, smudging the joins between the two. A typical Tufano production, said the film-maker Saul Metzstein, had “technical polish and a cinematic ambition at odds with its financially modest status”.
He worked for the BBC throughout the 1960s and 70s with directors including Lindsay Anderson, Ken Russell, Stephen Frears, Mike Leigh and Ken Loach. But it was in his work with a younger generation in the 90s that his imaginative cinematic sensibility was most strongly felt. For Danny Boyle, with whom he had already made the BBC period drama series Mr Wroe’s Virgins (1993), he shot the...

“I feel a responsibility for it to do well,” he says of the movie. “I’ve worked so hard on it, I care so much about it, and I want it to do well for the sake of the LGBTQ stories getting greenlit. So there’s a burden I feel, much as I want to sit here and just talk about how funny the movie is.”
That burden and sense of importance was something Eichner felt even while shooting the movie.

Lionsgate came in below Wall Street expectations for the first three months of the year, but its TV production division again had stellar results and its Starz streaming business kept on growing.
The company previously announced that it would look at spinning off or selling Starz, the premium cable network and streamer it acquired in 2016, as part of reducing debt. Among the suitors are Roku and Apollo Global, which have teamed on a bid to acquire a minority stake in Starz.
On the earnings call Thursday, CEO Jon Feltheimer said Lionsgate is aiming to announce its plan for Starz by the end of this summer and that the company expects a transaction could close as early as the first quarter of calendar year 2023.
“We are engaged in a robust and productive process with our bankers and a number of potential strategic and financial partners,” Feltheimer said, without identifying prospective buyers.
