Good Flick
hawgdogsgal3 August 2005
I, too, just happened upon this movie by being too lazy to change the channel. It ended up to be quite a good movie. It was a little different for me to see Robert Urich as a "bad guy". One of the things that actually stuck out for me was the house the family lived in. It looked like something Frank Lloyd Wright would have built, and I actually did try to find out where the house was (no luck). I also thought Gwyneth Paltrow was excellent, as was Robert Urich. I pretty much like Urich in most anything. I was a little disappointed that Shelley Fabares didn't have more screen time; I really like her. If you like suspense (as opposed to thrills), you will definitely like this movie.

This film deserves a closer look, based on a real guy, who was not "right"!!!
standupdj31 March 2008
This was the first and only movie I had ever worked on as an extra, which is why I had to watch it. As a "newbie" I was unaware that extras weren't supposed to talk to the "Talent". I couldn't help it, and because the director asked me to do some stand-in work for setting up shots when Mr. Urich wasn't on set, I got to hang around and gab with Shelly Fabres and catch a little more of what goes into making a movie...It must've been 90*and felt like 100, in Atlanta that summer. It was overwhelming to watch how hard everyone worked on their trade, the seriousness and intensity, something very few outsiders get to experience. The movie review doesn't do the film justice as it is filled with unbelievable surprises and twists and was based on a true story about a very "sick" guy in Louisiana...Worth watching again!!!

Gwenyth in her early days...
triple826 November 2003
I walked in while this was playing on tv but managed to catch most or all of it. The plot involves an overcontrolling father obsessed with running the lives of his daughters as well as his wife who eventually begins murdering people to keep that control. This movie was actually interesting and REALLY well acted. What's interesting to see is this movie stars Gwenyth Paltrow as one of the daughters and she is VERY GOOD in it-this was a made for tv movie made in Paltrow's early days I guess. I had never heard of it until I saw it on tv. EVERYONE is good in it, the actor who plays the dad is wonderful and the movie is very sad. I'd recomend it. Even back then you can see how talented Platrow is.

You left your grandchildren without a father! How could you!

Warning: Spoilers
***SPOILERS*** One of the best Lifetime Movie Network films ever ever made in that it's so off-the-wall and unbelievable yet at the same time a true story which makes you take it's mind boggling plot seriously. The film proves the famous saying that "Truth is stranger the fiction" and there's nothing more stranger and more eye-popping and hard to take then the storyline, based on a true story, of the film "Deadly Relations"

Decorated US Marine Corps. combat veteran Len Fagot, Robert Urich, has the kind of life and family that most of us dream about. A very successful disability claims lawyer Len also has a loving and dedicated wife Shirley, Shelly Fabares, and four beautiful daughters Carol, Gwyneth Paltrow, Joanne, Georgia Emelin, Nancy, Jillian Boyd, and Shirley Jr,Joy Farmer. Len runs his household like a Marine boot camp with his word being the last word in anything that goes on there.

It's when his oldest daughter Joanne breaks ranks and announces her engagement to George Westerfield, Matthew Perry, that the feeling betrayed and feeling hurt Len goes into action. Putting on an act that he's in favor of Joanne's decision he behind everyone backs plans to insure her husband to be and then have him knocked for the insurance money! Things get a bit strange when the straight laced and dedicated family man Len Fagot is caught literately with his pants down making out in a car with his new lady gardener Marty, Roxana Zal, by his youngest daughter Shirley Jr no less!

Even though Shirley Jr. is shocked to see what her dad is doing behind her mom's as well as her and her sisters backs she's told by a very embarrassed Len that it, his fooling around with Marty, all has to do with his heart condition that Marty in offering her professional services, besides gardening, to him has greatly elevated!

We soon begin to see that Len is slowly going both out of his mind and depleting his bank account as he insures everyone in his family, including himself,in order to make a killing on them if they ever happen to meet an unfortunate end. This goes so far that Len ends up shooting off, in a so-called hunting accident, his left hand in order for him to collect the insurance money! This insane act on Len's part backfires with the insurance company, smelling a rat, refusing to pay off!

***SPOILERS*** Len overplays his hand, his good hand, by trying to set up his daughter Carol's husband Mike Holland, Tony Higgins, in his latest insurance fraud scam but that proves to be a bit too difficult for him. By then Len has completely lost it, as well as his savings, and everyone in the family from his wife Shirley on down know what a sick and homicidal nut case he really was. Mike who's been smuggling pot across the Mexican border had the by now desperate Len make him a partner in crime to get a cut in his pot profits .This resulted with Mike's latest pot shipment, that Len was hoping would bail him out of his financial troubles, intercepted by corrupt US drug agents who ended up selling it themselves!

Completely out of his skull and desperate for cash Len goes through with his plan to knock off Mike, like he did George,to get the insurance money. But by then his favorite daughter Carol just had about all she could take from her money hungry as well as boozed up and pill popping father and decided to turn him, with her sworn court testimony, into the police and local D.A's office. This lead to Len making a complete fool of himself in court, where he was on trail for murder and insurance fraud, and later when facing life behind bars took the easy way out by ending it all.

I loved the house.
Vmb31724 October 2011
I was so glad when I logged onto and set up an account on this site. Just to see the first review about the home the Fagots lived in. It looked just like a Frank Lloyd Wright home but would be unusual to be in Louisiana. I wish I could have seen the home before it was demolished. Maybe I could find the new home built on the same site. Wonder who designed it?

Also since I live in Atlanta I did not recognize any of the scenery. Hard to swallow Robert Ulrich playing such a bad guy, although he did it well. How could such a successful father of 4 be so self destructive? He had so much going for him and life could have continued to be so wonderful.

Enjoying another LMN flick for a lazy Monday afternoon.

'Deadly' is an accurate summation...
moonspinner558 September 2007
The late Robert Urich might have become an actor of substance and quality (and, perhaps, a great dramatic resource) if he hadn't spent so much of his time on TV shows and in sub-standard TV movies. This quasi-camp melodrama, an adaptation of Carol Donahue and Shirley Hall's book "Deadly Relations: A True Story of Murder in a Suburban Family", wobbles unsteadily between fruity soap opera and suburban horror, with a laughable music score that flares up like Nino Rota's "Godfather Theme" whenever director Bill Condon needs the tension to escalate. Seems a well-to-do war vet and family man discovers the best way to make money is to take out insurance policies on certain family members and then collect the rewards after unfortunate fates befall them. The cast (which includes Shelley Fabares, Gwyneth Paltrow and Matthew Perry) try their best, but the tone of the movie is perpetually off, the narrative is confusing (with time racing along and secondary characters coming and going), and there's so little sympathy for the victims that when Paltrow finally decides to take her domineering papa to court and is shown a bloody photo of a murdered loved one, she hardly seems affected. The inter-relationships between Urich's four daughters doesn't satisfy either, and their conversations about whether or not their father is a murderer are so blasé that the concluding events are far from suspenseful. Urich passed away in real-life far too soon, yet these types of B-minus movies didn't leave him with much of an acting legacy; his central performance (sweating and stammering one minute and coolly unapologetic the next) is a colorful one but it makes no emotional sense--and neither does the film.

Father REALLY oversteps his bounds as a concerned father.
ganesh82317 February 2001
Robert Urich is a concerned father of 4 lovely daughters who has an appetite for sex, insurance money, and success for his offspring. When any one of this trio does not come forth, then he takes drastic actions, including murder.

Robert Urich is excellent
MarieGabrielle7 June 2006
in this portrayal of Leonard Fagot, a true story about a wartime veteran, who was controlling and manipulative with his family. This is a sad and intriguing story about a man descending further and further into insurance fraud and murder, presumably to "keep up appearances" financially.

Urich is excellent, because he always manages to portray a tortured, yet sympathetic character. Gwyneth Paltrow is one of the favorite daughters, who will do anything, almost anything for her Dad. She is also very good, and projects a realistic character. Shelley Fabares is the long-suffering wife, who has been cheated on, emotionally and possibly physically abused by her husband. After a certain point, she realizes what Leonard Fagot has been doing after acquiring insurance policies, then carrying out murder. When she threatens him, he informs her that he also has a policy on her.

Matthew Perry has a small part as a son-in-law who also comes to unfortunate ends. It may be interesting if they filmed a sequel to this story, many people are intrigued by it, as it was a true story. All in all, you will enjoy this film. 8/10

Urich doing his usual great job
TCall200412 March 2006
I came upon this movie as I was channel-surfing on a Sunday afternoon (a bad day for television, even with digital cable).

Lifetime was showing it and when I saw the cast, I decided to watch.

The late Robert Urich did a marvelous job in the TV movie "Blind Faith" as Robert Marshall, the NJ insurance man who had his wife, Maria, murdered in 1984, and is now serving life in prison.

He did not disappoint in this movie as a control freak of a father who went so far as to kill his two sons-in-law for insurance money (and to blow off his own right hand for the same reason).

A truly scary guy.

A young Gwyneth Paltrow (one of my favorite actresses) did an equally terrific job as Carol Fagot Holland, the daughter who was loyal to her father at first but , in the end, helped to bring him down.

Roxanne Zal also does a good job playing Urich's psychotic second wife, Marty.

Shelley Fabrares does not get enough air time in this move, but makes good use when she is on screen.

Good scenery , fine acting.

Nice way to kill two hours on a Sunday afternoon.

I'd recommend it.

True Story
gorgeous_5295 September 2005
What some people may not realize that, while this was a great TV movie, it was also a true story. My family lived next door to LJ Fagot before he made his insurance money and my father once worked as their gardener and was friends with Carol. My father and his siblings were also babysat by Joanne.

I was impressed to see the acting cast and thought they did a wonderful job. Urich's portrayal of LJ Fagot was great and very close to how dictatorial Fagot was in real life. Gwyneth Paltrow and Matthew Perry were virtually unknown when filming this movie, yet still demonstrated superb acting abilities.

The house where this all took place still stands, at least it did before Katrina, and is still inhabited. It looks nothing like the house in the movie but is still beautiful in the way only New Orleans houses are.

I will continue to show this movie to my children as it is apart of our family history, as well as that of the Fagot family.

Deadly Relations Gives New Meaning to Dysfunction ***1/2
edwagreen10 January 2011
Warning: Spoilers
Fine performances by Robert Urich and Gwyneth Paltrow highlight this fine 1993 film.

Some may declare that the film eventually becomes uneven. It starts out with Urich, an unbelievable disciplinarian, with his 4 daughters. This quickly dissolves as 2 daughters marry rather beneath them. Urich is soon discovered having an affair with a woman, and he also has a propensity for taking out insurance policies on his sons-in-law. I don't have to say with this all leads to.

This is the story of a dysfunctional family in crisis with the patriarch quite a devil. It just proves what desperate circumstances can lead a man to.

definitely a true story
greyjamie17 July 2006
I haven't seen the movie, but decided to research it after spending the day and talking about it with my grandmother, Barbara Fagot Mathews. So whoever did "research" to find out if it is a true story... here's the newspaper article: http://www.geocities.com/murder_stories3/carol_donahue1.html

By the way, he was my grandmother's first cousin. She knew him very well as a child, but after a serious fight between Leonard his once inseparable cousin (her brother, my great uncle), they stopped talking to that side of the family.

Apparently I have to have 10 lines to comment, so now I will babble. Was the movie any good? Maybe I'll try to get a copy of it.

I really miss Robert Urich
marbleann8 October 2005
This one of my favorite Lifetime type TV movies. This is not repeated as often as most of these types of movies so I was pleasantly surprised when I caught it on Lifetime. Movie is about a domineering father of 4 daughters who life spirals out of control. He uses the daughters and their various husbands to pay for his lifestyle by taking insurance policies out out on them. I don't have say what happens. No one can play crazy murderous fathers the way Robert Urich could. He played a similar role in another true story about a husband who kills his wife. I really miss seeing him in TV movies, a void was left when he past away. Forget about Spencer for Hire, these were those roles he was best in. Ms Paltrow plays his favorite daughter, Carol. I have never been a big fan of hers. She seems to be permanently underwhelmed and she seems that way in this movie. If she got hit by a bolt of lightning you would never know it by looking at her because she would look too bothered to show any emotion. She is not a bad actress it is just that she is just there. She is OK in this movie.

Shelley Fabares plays the put upon wife. She knows what is going with her hubby, but this is the mid 60's-70's what was she going to do? Her husband was a powerful lawyer at that. Her choices were very limited. She does try to leave but he won't go for it. A very sad position but a very real position for women years ago. I like the way she transforms herself.

I can't think of the actor who plays Carols second hubby, Mike, but he is very good. A weasel, but we know that as soon as we meet him. But I do think he loves her. You can see that in a scene where he is arguing with her father about a failed job. He seems more concerned for Carol then the doting father. Yes he gets mad at her and they have a heated scene But the husband is mad because Carol always takes daddy side even though she knows he is a jerk. The actor is very good in the part. All in all it is very good movie. Watch it if not just to see Mr Urich at his best.

I want to add that I loved the house they used for the movie. As another reviewer mentioned it does look like a Frank Lloyd Wright type of house. This movie is suppose to take place in the New Orleans area, so I don't think that house looks like a houses in that area. But it is a gorgeous place.

Deadly Relations starring a very young Gwenyth Paltrow,Shelly Fabares,Matthew Perry was INCREDIBLE. 10 stars easy!
taylor85198 July 2023
Warning: Spoilers
To have the VERY TALENTED (RIP) Robert Urich, to be the psycho(within) but yet a doting ostensible "loving father" dis-loyal husband, was brilliant in it. I loved his tall handsome self since first in the late 80s watching re-runs of VEGAS at times,(was very young)but i am still remembering him." Great movie. SAD but, a true story being portrayed in its accurate form is ALWAYS good. (sad)but so good. I did feel really sad for the eldest child, born before Gwenyth character, i think her name is JoAnn, to learn what her "daddy"did to Matthew's character, her spouse, was really evil, along with others. Had to buy it last week on DVD, to continue to watch at times, anytime I want. Perfectly done, from start to finish."" Adios.

SPOILERS ENCOMPASSED. and i rate this a ten plus,it is SO,great to see repeatedly too. just so so good.POOR MIKE/GEORGE.
domincanredangel1 May 2012
Warning: Spoilers
OMG.

Robert Urich was Nefarious in this OMG.wow.just a ruthless odd guy. and hateful, inward, and smile/tall handsome charming on the outer.

Sad how it end.

He is in heaven now,RIP not FAGOT,the guy i would hope not,but actor R.URICH,who die In my consensus too early,he was great! On Vegas and

a few more great TV true stories, but this one is incredible.

Actually; it is coming on tonight, and again throughout month of May & Jone 2012 on Lifetime, and or LMN. My consensus is the movie is beyond-good would give it a 10+ if i can.

Sad carol did not tell mike, Look my father has LIFE INSURANCE money on you,so DO NOT GO, she should've told him, then i believe MIKE right now will be alive.

so sad. The actor who star as Mike Joanne old boyfriend/or 1 guy she did date at 1 time,is cute and sweet, good for carol too,but she undermine this relationship due to her ODD-LOVE for a man who clearly undermine her life and michael's repeatedly, and his children.

Love the Narrative,at the end by CAROL- told by one of my fave actress the tall beautiful, talented Gwenyth Paltrow, she is so great in it,

the way she keep on getting her father help from Mike, her loving and faithful sweet boyfriend, turned husband, for which he clearly love her,and was in love with her but she was just a stupid girl,

believing she can trust this guy. Mike was right about her father,

and i think it is a sad ending, but i did expect it to end something similar, regarding 'Dad' and i know this much after the father kill the first son in law, if i was CAROL i would have done MORE to keep MIKE,

her husband number two all by the age of 23/24, i would have done MORE,

TO KEEP MIKE alive/away from"Dad", so sad about mike. and i am trying to remember the actor name but he was funny, really great in the movie.

Lastly i want to encompass, that the mother who star in COACH Shelly fabares,is a great actress, truly under-rated,and i adore her,she was so great in this, and mike, carol,Joanne, LOVE HER,she was astute enough to realize her father was NOT worth squat.

Matthew Perry, now 41 years old,was very young in this and so good! sad how he end up,but great actor in this,as his other movies.

all around cast was great, and i can re-watch this true tragic story 100x more times,in my lifetime, because it is THAT good, but tragic,so sad. daughter, carol finally do the RIGHT THING,even if she sound so sad at the end.the music is good at the end,and in between scenes, and the way the father control them from day one,is proof of enough the man was not playing with a full deck-i can't see ONE second where he did truly love CAROL,sad how she had to find out the HARD WAY by losing MIKE THAT HE DID NOT really love her,Not at all,and Crucifying her,Under Oath.

that was a shame.and then U see MIKE frustrated,(I CAN'T BLAME HIM) over the daughter CAROL,keep wanting to get money from MIKE! her child father, and spouse to just"GIVE IT ALL'as she say to her father?

WTF is that about?

Mike smack her up was no, NOT RIGHT,but i can see why he was getting so angry to give"ALL THE MONEY"away,to dad?OMG. your able to see toward END so so SO sad, mike was getting a real job,HAIR cut from long and was able to work legally,as Carol, was and the "love"the two clearly had was STILL THERE.

Just became too late thanks to her DAD's love for her by killing mike too, as clearly this was NO REAL LOVE from a parent,to his child and i am sad still for the family, and hopefully wherever, they are way older now, they are all doing well as can be,and ended up being somewhat happy after so much multiple tragedies, that NO loving family on earth deserve.

The original house.
idnamreggit6 March 2006
Although I haven't seen the movie, I know the family who currently own and live in the house.

It was flooded in 1992 during hurricane Andrew and it was flooded again during Katrina.

The first floor was completely submerged and the water level was half way up the second floor.

It has survived but the family has chosen to demolish the structure in the next few months.

If you live in the area, go by and see it quick.

The plans for the new house are unbelievable!!!

This movie is so "real," I felt it must be based on fact. But after a little research, I realized that it's just a very intriguing story, expertly crafted. Good performances all around. Highly recommended.
