Since Van Damme and Seagal hit big in the late 80s and early 90s, martial artists started to come out of the woodwork with their own unique brand. As we’ve covered recently on Reel Action, Van Damme collaborator Sheldon Lettich attempted to introduce audiences to both the style of Capoeira and the star power of Mark Dacascos in Only the Strong. Another martial artist that tried his hand at the action title and came away with a cult following was Jeff Speakman as he demonstrated his Kenpo skills in the 1991 film The Perfect Weapon.
Blu-ray.com has the details on a new special edition Blu-ray of The Perfect Weapon. The release will come from Kino Lorber, who will also release Cannon’s Revenge of the Ninja. This upcoming Blu-ray will have an all-new 4K remaster of the film and is set to hit the market on May 21.

Those of you who love martial arts movies and follow our JoBlo Original, Reel Action, on YouTube may have seen the recent spotlight we did on the Mark Dacascos 1993 capoeira movie, Only the Strong. While Only the Strong should have skyrocketed Dacascos to martial arts stardom, he would actually have an earlier credit with a smaller role in a film called American Samurai, which starred David Bradley of the American Ninja sequels. American Samurai would come from the director of many Ninja-related movies, Sam Firstenberg, for the infamous once-upon-a-movie studio, Cannon Films. Sam Firstenberg was a director who the studio often collaborated with, but American Samurai would be the first movie that Cannon took their famous scissors to and alter the film against the director’s vision.
A group on Facebook called The Official Restoration of American Samurai has been established with some news for fans of the film and genre.

If you’re like us here at Reel Action, you probably love martial arts movies. And if you love martial arts movies, chances are, you are a fan of Mark Dacascos. And if you’re a fan of Mark Dacascos, then you probably know the movie, Only the Strong. Only the Strong is the best Jean-Claude Van Damme movie that Van Damme never starred in. In fact, if you look at the director’s filmography, he had a successful collaboration streak with Jcvd that led to Only the Strong. However, the movie actually fares better without him, because it features a star-making turn by the unanimously perceived underrated martial arts actor Mark Dacascos. Add in the teacher-savior plot and an introduction to a unique brand of martial art and you have an incredibly fun way to spend 90 minutes. We talk Only the Strong on this entry of Reel Action.

Curb Your Enthusiasm returns to Max this month in what’s being called the show’s final season (for now). If you’re not ready for the Larry David-centric comedy series to end, you can binge all eleven of the show’s previous seasons on Max right now before hitting the new episodes.
Tokyo Vice will also be back in February for season 2. Stars Ansel Elgort, Ken Watanabe, Rinko Kikuchi, Rachel Keller, Show Kasamatsu, and Ayumi Ito are joined by Kubozuka and Miki Maya this time around, as Jake Adelstein feels the danger closing in on him. Max also welcomes you to the premiere of the highly acclaimed (and highly depraved) Dicks: The Musical this month, as a couple of self-obsessed businessmen discover they’re identical twins and decided to bring their divorced parents back together.

Mark Dacascos has been around on our screens since 1989, playing mostly in films that required fighting skills which he has in spades. With over 80 parts in film, television, and even video games, the man has made his mark. His martial arts background is impressive, being the son of Al Dacascos, one of the founder of Wun Hop Kuen Do (Whkd) Kung Fu, he has been trained from a young age and it shows. Mark Dacascos is one of the most skilled fighters in the industry, something that shows through many of his roles. Here are our picks for the best Mark Dacascos movies.
Only the Strong (1993)
Early on in his career, but not exactly at the start, this film is one that helped put Dacascos on the map. Yes, he had done other work, but for most action film fans, this capoeira film really shows his talent as an actor and a martial artist.

The "John Wick" series has always had an exciting roster of actors. The first film had Willem Dafoe and John Leguizamo. The second one gave us our "The Matrix" reunion with Laurence Fishburne. The third one gave us Anjelica Huston and Halle Berry. And the fourth one expands things even further by adding Bill Skarsgård and Donnie Yen. Plus, you have the always-welcome Ian McShane and the late, great Lance Reddick across all four. When it comes to the series' villains, though, they make some rather unexpected choices.
Okay, the first film featured Alfie Allen and Michael Nyqvist as the antagonists, which are names that make sense, but the big bad of "John Wick: Chapter 2" is Italian actor Riccardo Scamarcio, someone most people in the United States at least couldn't pick out of a lineup. Then "John Wick: Chapter 3 — Parabellum" rolls around, and while a good number of people would...

Posters showing Lawrence’s character Mystique being strangled by Oscar Isaac’s Apocalypse widely criticised
Film company 20th Century Fox has apologised for a billboard that features Jennifer Lawrence’s X-Men: Apocalypse character Mystique being strangled.
The imagery of Oscar Isaac’s character Apocalypse choking Mystique is sometimes accompanied by the tagline: “Only the strong will survive”. Actor and filmmaker Rose McGowan said there was “a major problem when the men and women at 20th Century Fox think casual violence against women is a way to market a film”.

“Only the strong will survive,” is not simply tagline, but also a serious omen. X-Men: Apocalypse promises to be the darkest X-Men film yet and with the team going up against their most formidable opponent, many fans are worried about the fates of their favourite mutants.
Considering how many characters the X-Men films have killed throughout the series, it’s a valid fear that almost anyone is fair game. We’ve seen Jean Grey, Professor X, and Cyclops all die at different points, and with Bryan Singer about to close out this chapter of the franchise, it’s clear that a few key departures are going to be necessary to help wipe the slate clean.
The new trailer certainly supports this fear, and suggests that not everyone will get a happy ending. Apocalypse looks to have immense power and it’s apparent that stopping him won’t come without a cost.

If you’re a comic book fan, May should be quite the month with Captain America: Civil War hitting theaters on May 6, and X-Men: Apocalypse being released only three weeks later on May 27. And while there has been some criticism of the upcoming X-Men film, with more than a few fans disliking the initial look of the movie’s central villain, Apocalypse (played by Star Wars: The Force Awakens star Oscar Isaac), there’s no denying that the first trailer for the film was great. However, X-Men: Apocalypse‘s second trailer, which was just released Thursday morning, may be even better than the first one. So what’s so terrific

There has been an awakening – and we’re not talking about that of the Force. As promised, 20th Century Fox has unveiled the first official trailer for X-Men: Apocalypse, and it’s one that sees Oscar Isaac’s glowering big bad awaken from his slumber.

20th Century Fox have released a teaser poster for next year’s X-Men: Apocalypse, with a trailer due to drop tomorrow. The poster simply shows the easily-recognisable X-logo slowly being burnt to a crisp, with the tagline ‘Only the strong will survive’. Take a look at it down below.
Strong tagline, boring image. I guess we shouldn’t expect too much from a teaser poster, but considering we’ve already seen a few characters grace the cover of Entertainment Weekly, it can’t have been too much to ask for another glimpse, surely?
Ah well. We’ll get plenty of glimpses when the trailer hits tomorrow. Whether or not it’ll bear many similarities to the Comic-Con trailer shown back in July remains to be seen, but chances are there’ll be some recycled footage from that. It’s been a week of trailer debuts so far, and that’s set to continue when 20th Century Fox unveils the very first teaser for the next installment in their X-franchise, X-Men: Apocalypse. To mark the occasion they’ve released the motion poster below, which, while not terribly revealing, does feature a half-scorched X-logo and the tagline, “Only The Strong Will Survive”. This is most likely a reference to Oscar Isaac’s titular villain, En Sabah Nur, who holds a very strict survival of the fittest policy when it comes to the mutants he deems worthy of inheriting the earth.
We don’t know what to expect from the first trailer, but rumor has it it’ll mainly feature the footage that was debuted at Comic Con this past Summer.
Anyway, while we wait for a look at it, check out the poster and the movie’s official synopsis below.

DC: How did Mortal Kombat: Legacy go from short film to series?

Activision’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows has received a new trailer that highlights the skills and abilities of one of the most energetic of the turtle brethren, Michelangelo.
The gameplay video gives fans an early look at what to expect once they tie his infamous orange mask around their imaginary turtle skulls. Michelangelo’s fighting style exemplifies a higher level of grace as he effortlessly executes flare kicks that land with precision on an unfortunate enemy’s head. It’s clear that Mikey is going to be the fastest character as he implements an elaborate display of technical ability through his unique combat style.
Michelangelo’s fighting abilities reminds me of a mix between traditional Capoeira and breakdancing. Luckily, they seem to go hand-in-hand considering the musical rhythms underlying both of them.

The film of Ayrton Senna's life shows he was answering not to a series of commercial opportunities but to a compulsion to race
Senna, the film, strikes with elegiac force and is not alone in modern cinema in augmenting memories that were already safe and deep. Lurching out of the dark, the viewer asks why the hot new genre of sports documentaries is so unsettling and effective.
One answer is that they return us to the pre-corporate age when sport was a means of expression and not a branch of business. When Ayrton Senna defends himself as a pure "racer", who drove against other men and their machines, rather than a scoreboard, or a clock, there is a subconscious pull to another time, before Formula One was a game of computer technology and industrialised product-shifting.
The moment in history we are all attempting to identify is when sport became...

Here at Movieline HQ, the disturbing publicity still is one of our favorite things, if only because each one is like a snowflake -- original, simple-yet-complex, and oddly transfixing. The disturbing celebrity picture however? The exact opposite -- those are just plain scary. A calm stroll through the pages of Getty Images earlier this morning unearthed this frightening gem. Only the strong of will are advised to click ahead. The rest, well, maybe think of saving yourselves.

Kevin James is a lot of things: a comedian, a king of Queens, a mall cop, a zookeeper. Now, it's time to add a new occupation to that list — mixed martial artist.
As we reported earlier today, James is set to star in an as-yet-untitled feature about a physics teacher who becomes a mixed martial arts fighter in light of some serious budget cuts at his school. He eventually winds up as a fighter in the Ufc. It might seem like a stretch to some of you, but James is an actor — it's literally his job to transform himself into characters you wouldn't expect him to play.
Besides, it's not like James doesn't have a long history of martial arts films to study and base his character around. After the jump, we've listed some fighting styles and techniques that he should consider when preparing for his Mma film!

The Expendables may have boasted a stellar line-up of 80s action stars, but that doesn’t mean we can’t hope for even more of them in its sequel. Here are Ron’s suggestions…
The Expendables isn't out just yet as I write this, but I have no doubt that it's going to be a huge hit. Well, okay, maybe it won't be a huge hit, but like Sly Stallone's return to his Rambo roots, it's going to do really well.
I mean, it's basically every major action movie star (and some minor action movie stars) from the 80s all in the same film. However, there were some shameful omissions that can be added to the mix for The Expendables 2.
I'm not talking about high profile omissions, like Jean-Claude Van Damme or Steven Crotchkicker Seagal, though those guys would be awesome to have in The Expendables universe. I'm talking about...

Kerry Katona reportedly sparked fears for her mental health after a series of online messages. The 29-year-old launched into a Facebook rant after dumping her latest boyfriend, reports the Daily Star. One of the 14 messages read: "Kerry Katona is going to that weird, twisted and demented place called my dreams. Be glad you’re not going. Only the strong can survive my mind. (sic)" Katona, who apparently dumped painter and decorator Adam Waldron after growing unhappy with his drinking, also compared her life to a soap. "If you want to see a Real good soap opera, just come watch my family," she wrote. "Think it gonna be one of them days, my rice krispies just said, s**t, f**k & b*****ks," she added, before telling fans that she was going to bed to try and "dream up a hunky guy". Katona also appeared to take a dig at ex-husband Mark Croft,...

I was reading an article in “Empire Magazine” which mentioned that Nathan Fillion makes every film he’s in at least 25% better. This got me thinking, who else makes films more watchable even if the movies are terrible to begin with? So I compiled a list (in no particular order), of those actors and actresses who whether it’s through enthusiasm, comedy value or just sheer presence, make whatever film they’re in just that little bit more exciting. Feel free to disagree with my opinions below. 1. Mark Dacascos Ignoring Amazing films like “Drive” and “Brotherhood of the Wolf”, and pretty good films like “Only the Strong”, Mark Dacascos has been in some shit. No matter though, because the mere fact that any of these turds stars Dacascos causes them to be polished to a degree only some sort of industrial buffer could achieve. Yes, Mark Dacascos is the heavy...

In this series, we will study the 16 couples on Dancing with the Stars season 9 and predict who has the best chances for success, and who is doomed to humiliation.
Who is Mark Dacascos?
It's the Chairman! 45-year-old Mark Dacascos is best known for being the host of Food Network's Iron Chef America. He is also a trained martial artist. The Honolulu-born actor started his martial arts training at an early age under the tutelage of his parents. He was discovered in San Francisco's Chinatown, and since then started playing martial artists in film and television, until bagging the Iron Chef America role in 2005. His more notable screen credits include the French epic Brotherhood of the Wolf, as well as the cult classic Only the Strong, and Cradle to the Grave, opposite Jet Li.
