Tom Hanks is known for his good-guy characters in his films. Be it romantic comedies such as You’ve Got Mail and Sleepless in Seattle, or dramas such as Forrest Gump and Philadelphia, the actor always plays roles that represent the morally right side of humanity. With his penchant for such sweet roles, he has been nicknamed the Dad of Hollywood.
However, Hanks reportedly does not have the need to stick to such roles. He recently played Elvis Presley’s antagonistic manager Col. Tom Parker in Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis, which was different from his usual good-guy roles. He has also mentioned that he fought against decisions made by directors to portray him as a good guy, especially in a pivotal scene in his Oscar-winning film Forrest Gump.

In Jonathan Frakes' 1996 film "Star Trek: First Contact," the U.S.S. Enterprise travels back in time to the year 2063, the year humanity first invented faster-than-light travel and, almost immediately thereafter, made first contact with an alien species. By "Star Trek" lore, the maiden voyage of the Phoenix, the very first warp-capable ship, caught the attention of a passing Vulcan vessel, causing them to change course, land on Earth, and shake hands with humans. It was the franchise's "Welcome to the neighborhood" moment. It also started a massive utopian rebuilding of Earth, as it had just survived several devastating wars. By "Star Trek" creator Gene Roddenberry's estimation, Earth had to almost destroy itself to have a "moment of clarity." After that, the technological, post-war, post-scarcity, post-capitalist utopia could begin.
The inventor of warp drive was Zefram Cochrane, who fashioned his ship out of a disused bomb casing. In "First Contact,...

Conjoined twins Lori and George Schappell, subjects of several notable documentaries who pursued separate careers, interests and relationships during lives that defied medical expectations, died this month in Pennsylvania, according to funeral home officials. They were 62.
The twins, listed by Guinness World Records as the oldest living conjoined twins, died April 7 at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, according to obituaries posted by Leibensperger Funeral Homes of Hamburg. The cause of death was not detailed.
“When we were born, the doctors didn’t think we’d make 30, but we proved them wrong,” Lori said in an interview when they turned 50, The Philadelphia Inquirer reported. George came out as transgender in 2007.
The twins, born Sept. 18, 1961, in West Reading, Pennsylvania, had distinct brains but were joined at the skull. George, who had spina bifida and was 4 inches shorter, was wheeled around by Lori on an adaptive wheeled stool. Despite each having...

Robert Downey Jr. in “Oppenheimer” had it easy this year.
He took the early lead in Gold Derby’s official Oscar odds for Best Supporting Actor. He widened that lead in the following months. He then swept the precursor awards. And despite landing in a powerhouse lineup that included Sterling K. Brown in “American Fiction,” Robert De Niro in “Killers of the Flower Moon,” Ryan Gosling in “Barbie” and Mark Ruffalo in “Poor Things,” there was a “near zero” chance of Downey not being called to the stage to accept the Academy Award.
But not every past recipient of the Best Supporting Actor Oscar has cruised to victory like Downey. There have been numerous nail-biters over the years.
I recall one contest in particular from three decades ago. The 1993 fabulous five included first-time nominee Leonardo DiCaprio as the autistic younger brother of Johnny Depp in “What’s Eating Gilbert Grape,” Ralph Fiennes...

When it comes to complex and challenging roles that require submitting oneself fully to the process, few actors can claim to have achieved what Tom Hanks has. The two-time Oscar winner is synonymous with some of the most iconic characters in films like Forrest Gump, Philadelphia, Cast Away, and many more that have showcased his prowess as a performer.

Spencer Tracy was the two-time Oscar winner starred in a variety of classics before his death in 1967, including nine films opposite fellow legend Katharine Hepburn. Let’s take a look back at 20 of his greatest films, ranked worst to best.
Tracy pulled off the rare hat-trick of winning back-to-back Best Actor Oscars, first for his performance as a Portuguese sailor in “Captains Courageous” (1937), then for playing a dedicated priest helping wayward youths in “Boys Town” (1938). It’s a feat that would only be repeated once more in this category by Tom Hanks (“Philadelphia” in 1993 and “Forrest Gump” in 1994).
Tracy would compete seven more times in the category: “San Francisco” (1936), “Father of the Bride” (1950), “Bad Day at Black Rock” (1955), “The Old Man and the Sea” (1958), “Inherit the Wind” (1960), “Judgment at Nuremberg” (1961), and “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner?” (1967), which was recognized posthumously.

Bruce Springsteen will be the subject of Deliver Me From Nowhere, a biopic from director Scott Cooper. The Bear’s Jeremy Allen White is the top choice to star.
Writer and director Scott Cooper is no stranger to musical films, having written and directed the terrific 2009 drama Crazy Heart, which saw Jeff Bridges play an alcoholic country singer, for which he won an Oscar for Best Actor.
Deliver Me From Nowhere, much like Bob Marley: One Love, which is still in cinemas, will focus on the creation of one iconic album, in this case Nebraska, which Springsteen made in 1982. It is often cited as his masterpiece. It was released between 1980’s The River and 1984’s Born In The USA, and Springsteen recorded it without his regular collaborators The E Street Band. Born In The USA is one of the best selling albums of all time.

“The Boss,” Bruce Springsteen, is easily one of the most iconic living artists in music with hits like “Streets of Philadelphia,” “Dancing in the Dark” and “Born to Run,” among many others. In 1982, Jonathan Demme directed a lovely TV movie called “Who Am I This Time?” about a shy actor (Christopher Walken) who can only reveal himself on stage in a variety of disparate roles. It’s an emblematic title and idea for Demme himself, a director whose fascination for the viewer lies in the fact that he’s paradoxically both an auteur with a clear signature and a director who tried on different artistic personalities throughout his career. There’s the exploitation guerrilla of the early ’70s; the humanist drama specialist who made “Melvin and Howard,” “Philadelphia,” and “Rachel Getting Married”; the off-beat hipster comedian; the sensitive documentarian; the live performance specialist; and the steward of well resourced, star-driven literary adaptations and remakes that became Demme’s specialty after his blockbuster success with “The Silence of the Lambs” in 1991.

Actor Denzel Washington famously collaborated with Tom Hanks for the critically and commercially successful Philadelphia. Washington pulled from many sources to inspire his character, including from a few famous lawyers.

Washington put a lot of thought in his Philadelphia performance with Hanks. He played attorney Joe Miller, who’d end up defending Hanks’ character after the latter was fired for being gay and having AIDs.
The Oscar-winner did what he’s used to doing for movie roles and dove head first into research.
“The acting coach Stanislavsky talks about cutting 90 percent. So you do research, research, research, then you drop it and listen when you’re in the scene and know who you are,” Washington once told Cigar Aficionado. “You never know how it’s gonna come around. That’s why you go out there and find out.

Ron Nyswaner will soon be traveling to New York to reunite with his Writers Guild of America East fellows for a grand occasion. The Oscar-nominated screenwriter, producer and showrunner has been selected to receive the Walter Bernstein Award at the 76th Writers Guild Awards at New York’s Edison Ballroom on April 14.
The honor — named after the late screenwriter who was blacklisted for his political views only to persevere and get his career back on track with such credits as Fail-Safe, Semi-Tough and Yanks — is presented to writers “who have demonstrated with creativity, grace and bravery a willingness to confront social injustice in the face of adversity,” per the organization.
Nyswaner has been doing that for pretty much his entire career. A prime example is Jonathan Demme’s 1993 film Philadelphia. Penned by Nyswaner, the Tom Hanks and Denzel Washington-starrer was the first major Hollywood film to dramatize the real-world...

Denzel Washington is one of the most prolific actors who changed the way African American characters were portrayed in mainstream cinema. The actor has starred in landmark films such as Training Day, Glory, Philadelphia, Malcolm X, and Cry Freedom. He has also been nominated for the Oscars multiple times and has won the award twice.
Washington was reportedly always interested in playing Black Panther in a film adaptation. While the actor became too old to play the iconic superhero by the time the character made his cinematic debut with Chadwick Boseman’s portrayal, Washington reportedly had his eyes on another superhero. Denzel Washington once mentioned how he wanted to play Green Lantern.

A lot of really fun movies from the eighties and nineties are tough to get decent copies of. While some of the stories have happy endings, other films seem all but doomed to languish until a niche label like Arrow Video, Kino Lorber, or Unearthed Films gives them the TLC they deserve. So, what’s the title we’re worried is Gone Forever here at JoBlo? A cool little thriller (which I previously wrote up for Best Movie You Never Saw) from 1991 called Ricochet has a pretty impressive pedigree. The movie stars Denzel Washington, John Lithgow, Ice-t, Kevin Pollack and The Bionic Woman herself, Lindsay Wagner, while Highlander’s Russell Mulcahy directs it, is produced by Joel Silver, and is written by Die Hard’s Steven E De Souza. In fact, Ricochet takes place in the same universe as Die Hard, with Mary Ellen Trainor reprising her role as snoopy TV reporter Gale Wallens.

Joanne Woodward and her husband Paul Newman were one of Hollywood’s golden couples. Both together and separately the actors contributed to some of the most iconic films ever made. Although she has retreated from public life in recent years due to health concerns, her relevance remains strong. Allison Janney made a special point of thanking her when she won her Best Supporting Actress Oscar for “I, Tonya.”
Woodward started her career on the New York stage and studied at two of New York’s leading acting schools of the day — the Neighborhood Playhouse and the Actors Studio. Success then came to her quite quickly when she won an Oscar for “The Three Faces of Eve,” which was only her third film. She would go on to earn three more Oscar nominations as Best Actress in the subsequent years of her 40-year film career.

In the 95-year history of the Academy Awards, 88 films have each received nominations for both Best Actor and Best Actress. Although there have been 19 cases of two or more movies doing so in a single year, there hasn’t been such an occurrence since 1996, when both lead lineups included performers from “Dead Man Walking” and “Leaving Las Vegas.” However, according to Gold Derby’s late-stage 2024 Oscar nominations predictions, that nearly three-decade gap is set to soon be closed by costar pairs from “Killers of the Flower Moon” and “Maestro.”

January 1999. One quarter of a century ago. I attended the Golden Globe Awards for the first time (as an accredited member of the press) — and it was a night that I’ll never forget.
Interestingly enough, the most memorable moment of the night for me wasn’t having Best TV Supporting Actress co-winner Camryn Manheim (“The Practice”) quiz me on lines from 1997’s hit comedy “Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion.”
Rather, it was when I was practically escorted out of the backstage press room for expressing my shock when Lauren Bacall announced Jim Carrey as the year’s Best Drama Actor for “The Truman Show,” beating out the likes of Tom Hanks in “Saving Private Ryan,” Ian McKellen in “Gods and Monsters” and Nick Nolte in “Affliction.” (My money had been on McKellen.)

Good jokes — and good union support — helped a public radio reporter get his job back after he was fired over clips from his stand-up set posted on social media.
As Vice reports, Jad Sleiman emerged largely victorious from an arbitration dispute with the Philadelphia NPR member, Whyy. The third-party arbitrator found that the station didn’t have “just cause” to fire Sleiman over the jokes he posted to social media, and should be reinstated. The arbitrator also ruled that some of the material was inflammatory, and should be removed from...

Earlier this week, the Mouse House announced the addition of more than 20 free streaming channels to the ABC app.
Despite the fact that the streaming arm of the company isn’t currently profitable, Disney has the resources to do essentially whatever it wants when it comes to making its shows and movies available to viewers. The company doesn’t have a traditional free ad-supported streaming service as of now, but that could be changing. Earlier this week, the company announced it was adding 20+ free ad-supported TV (Fast) channels to the ABC app. With multiple changes happening around Disney’s streaming front, the House of Mouse just might be gearing up to officially enter the world of free streaming.
New Fast channels on the ABC app include ESPN8: The Ocho, which launched as a free channel a few days before Christmas. Disney does not currently have a free streaming service to compete with Pluto TV,...

This year, Golden Globes voters bestowed nominations upon more than 100 individual film and TV creatives, including actors, directors, writers, musicians, and even comedians. Most of those who appear on the ballot were widely expected to show up there, but some either slid through without much notice or have not received as much personal publicity as their projects. In order to make sure you didn’t miss any notable inclusions, take a read through our comprehensive breakdown of the year’s undersung contenders.
Often, Best Original Song is a category in which the work is highlighted more than the artist, and that certainly applies to at least part of this year’s six-slot lineup. Every nominated song is, however, attached to one or more household names, with siblings Billie Eilish and Finneas O’Connell (“What Was I Made For?” from “Barbie”) perhaps standing out the most due to their 2022 victory in this...

Very few performers who became Golden Globe nominees in their teens can claim to have stayed in the organization’s good graces as adults, but, with 13 notices and three wins spread over nearly 30 years, Leonardo DiCaprio is more justified in doing so than anyone else. As it happens, the film star has picked up multiple Golden Globe bids during each decade of his adult life, and he is now working on squeezing in another just before he enters his 50s. If he winds up clinching his third Best Film Drama Actor trophy for “Killers of the Flower Moon” this winter, he will tie the illustrious record for most victories in that category.
DiCaprio’s previous Golden Globe wins came for his lead performances in the dramas “The Aviator” (2005) and “The Revenant” (2016) and the comedy “The Wolf of Wall Street” (2014). This potential new drama bid would be his ninth, following unsuccessful...

A confidential legal battle is brewing between rock duo Hall & Oates, with Daryl Hall securing a temporary restraining order against John Oates.
Hall, through his trust, filed a lawsuit against Oates on Nov. 16, along with a motion to keep the case under seal. The next day, Nashville Chancery Court Judge Russell Perkins issued a restraining order to start Nov. 30. It’s unknown why the order was issued or how long it will stay in effect. Philadelphia magazine first reported the suit on Monday.
The nature of the matter is unclear, though the court labeled it a “contract/debt” dispute. Summons were issued on Monday to Aimee Oates and Richard Flynn, as co-trustees of Oates’ trust.
A restraining bond for Hall, which is intended to compensate Oates if he was found to be wrongfully restrained, was set at $50,000.
A lawyer for Hall and a rep for Oates didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

Daryl Hall, one half of the most successful pop duo in U.S. chart history, Hall & Oates, is suing John Oates and has been granted a restraining order against his longtime bandmate.
Hall filed the lawsuit November 16 in Nashville Chauncery Court, a court spokesperson confirmed to Deadline, but the documents — which are classified as a contract/debt matter — are under seal, so details are not known. Hall and Oates formed the duo Philadelphia in 1970. During their peak years of 1974-91 as Hall & Oates, the pair reached the U.S. Top 40 with 29 of their 33 singles charting on Billboard’s Hot 100. President Joe Biden sent out a proclamation earlier this year declaring April 27, 2023, as the 70th anniversary of the Lavender Scare. It was the height of the Cold War and the blacklist seventy years ago as Senator Joseph McCarthy was hellbent on ridding the country of Communists with his witch-hunt thus destroying countless lives in his wake.
It was in this atmosphere that President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed an executive order banning Lgbtqi+ Americans from serving in the federal government. Some 5,000-10,000 people were investigated, interrogated and lost their jobs because they were considered a threat to national security and according to Biden’s proclamation “unworthy of public trust. Employees who were fired under these policies often lost future employment…even relationships with their families. Many endured poverty and public disgrace. Some took their own lives as a result of the trauma they had to bear. “

In 2007, Matt Bomer would have been a little too young to play Don Draper on Mad Men. (Jon Hamm has six years on him.) In most other ways, though, he would have been perfect. He has the kind of chiseled, leading man features, and the charisma to match, that make him seem like a man from an earlier time. His breakout TV role, 2009’s White Collar, even contrived a reason to dress him in Rat Pack-era suits, and he’s appeared in a number of period pieces, most notably Amazon...

No one on the planet could ever accuse "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" of being too politically correct, but when the series first debuted, the cast was worried that they hadn't at least offended someone.
The hit FX series, which has run for a record-breaking 16 seasons, has somehow managed to walk the fine line between being utterly offensive and totally hilarious, at least most of the time. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter back in 2013, the cast and creators revealed that they were initially concerned at the lack of backlash to their series because they worried it meant no one could possibly be watching. After all, the first season featured episodes where characters faked cancer, tried to pick up women at an abortion rally, sold alcohol to minors as a business tactic, and more! The series has always been envelope-pushing in its comedy and really hasn't let up in all of the years since,...

"It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia" has come a long way from its low-budget roots. Before the show got picked up by FX, the creators' first few episodes were home-made and only possible because they'd managed to find an affordable camera. Nowadays, the show is funded so well that there don't seem to be any limits. They could film in a completely different location for an episode or two (or a whole mini-season), experiment with claymation, and bring in all sorts of surprising guest stars. For Glenn Howerton, a co-creator of the show and the actor who plays Dennis, it was the season 11 finale that served as the most gratuitous example of the show's rising budget.

"It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" has pushed the boundaries of comedy many times over the years. Some controversial episodes featured blackface, others included homophobic slurs, and one included an homage to the beloved 1990 rom-com, "Pretty Woman." The film is fondly remembered as one of Julia Roberts' breakout roles following "Mystic Pizza" and "Steel Magnolias." It is lauded as a romantic rags-to-riches fairytale, a modern Cinderella if you will — but the "Sunny" creators had a slightly different take on the premise.

Chardee MacDennis might be the game of games, but making this unforgettable episode did not feel like a game to "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" creator and star Rob McElhenney. He and his fellow castmates have a lot of fun shooting the series, but not every day at the office is fun for everyone. His wife and co-star Kaitlin Olson really enjoyed shooting their aggressive gameplay, but that might have something to do with why McElhenney wasn't having such a good time. Olson has kissed their co-star Charlie Day on the show, but this season 7 episode was still the most painful for McElhenney to shoot. Chardee MacDennis is one of the most memorable parts of the entire show, but the shoot itself is something McElhenney wishes he could forget.

If you looked to the 1980s for representation of the HIV/AIDS epidemic on mainstream screens anywhere, you’d be staring into a void.
Hollywood, much like the reigning political administration of the time, ignored the crisis as it grew that decade — and certainly did not know what to do with it once ignorance was no longer an option. It wasn’t until Rock Hudson, once a glimmering fawned-upon pillar of quote-unquote masculinity, collapsed in the summer of 1985 and died that fall from AIDS complications that the film industry was finally forced to respond at all.
That same year, just a few months before Hudson’s death, porn-director-turned-activist filmmaker Arthur J. Bressan Jr. released the first narrative theatrical feature devoted to the gay plague that the likes of Reagan and Thatcher otherwise preferred to keep far away from legislation and policy.
Bressan died two years later from his own complications from AIDS,...

"It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" is a sitcom unlike any other, but it still has its fair share of influences. A huge inspiration for the series' creators was Larry David, the co-creator of the global hit "Seinfeld" and creator and star of the hilarious HBO series "Curb Your Enthusiasm," which may or may not be entering its final season. But it wasn't just David's work that inspired "Sunny" showrunner Rob McElhenney, it was David's words — and his laughter — that also served as motivation. In fact, the 76-year-old comedian is connected to "Sunny" in more ways than you might think.
Before Kaitlin Olson was Sweet Dee, she also had a recurring role in "Curb" as Becky, the sister of David's long-time on-screen girlfriend Cheryl. Olson first appeared in the show's very first season and later reprised her role in season 10. Olson described her experience on David's production as "amazing," in a 2013 Vanity Fair interview.
