Over the years, veteran documentarian Frederick Wiseman has covered what sometimes feels like almost kind of institution and every aspect of life in America (and occasionally, life abroad too). "Titicut Follies," "Juvenile Court," "Zoo," "Racetrack," "Central Park," "Public Housing," "Boxing Gym," a pair of movies focusing on teen education, and many, many more, he's covered the gamut. Now, aged 83, Wiseman, like Rodney Dangerfield before him, is going Back To School... Having already tackled "High School" some time back, the director has graduated with "At Berkeley," an expansive, lengthy (a touch over four hours) and totally brilliant film taking a look behind the scenes of California's legendary institutions, from the school's professors and administrative staff to the students of almost every stripe. Presented, as ever with the director's work, without narration, much in the way of score, or even on-screen captions, the film picks up at something of a crisis point in the.

Both gorilla vs bear and Pitchfork have selected their videos of the year and, just for the fun of it, I've scattered a few up and down this Saturday Briefing.
Via Mike Everleth comes news that the National Film Preservation Foundation has begun production on Treasures 6: Next Wave Avant-Garde, "a 2-dvd set to be released in fall 2013. Envisioned as a sequel to the Nfpf's award-winning Treasures IV: American Avant-Garde Film, 1947-1986, the new anthology explores how avant-garde film took root and spread after the 1950s as the next generation embraced diversity and forged connections with conceptual and performance art." No titles have been announced yet, but we can look forward to 5½ hours of restorations from several archives.
212 featuring Lazy Jay from Azealia Banks on Vimeo.

Short batch this week, but these are all terrific links. First, we have two more moving remembrances of the amazing George Kuchar:
First, Kuchar protege Bob Moricz wrote a long tribute for Bright Lights Film Journal on how George inspired him directly, how a nicely written fan letter turned into a terrific friendship. And you absolutely don’t want to miss the tube sock story, a tale I never tire of hearing.Second, Lenny Lipton has a very different kind of George Kuchar story, of a relationship that unfortunately soured following a rough incident. This is the only story of this kind that I’ve ever heard about George and one I wish had worked out differently. In other links: Jessica Oreck has some really nice screengrabs from Frederick Wiseman’s Zoo. Plus, even prettier Lapland landscapes.Speaking of screen captures: Chris Hansen has a few of his lovely...
