Good show, wish they made more of them
wrudd20 December 2006
I watched the show regularly when it was initially syndicated. It wasn't sold very well and the expectations for it apparently weren't high as in this area it was on Saturday afternoons when there wasn't a college game to televise. Maybe they thought the show would be targeted for young children but it really wasn't. The leads were very good and Lynda Carter proved to be beautiful to look at even all covered up 1700s style clothing. If you like this time period and have a chance to catch one of these episodes you should check it out. Each episode was a stand alone but like anything else if you could see it play out over a few episodes you get a better feel for the characters. I was very disappointed when it was canceled, I thought with this entertaining of a show it would find an audience but it probably was buried and not promoted in other markets as well as the local one here. Too bad.

Hoping for DVD release
maggiefalls1 June 2007
We looked forward to this show when it was originally broadcast. Well written, tremendous cast led by Horsley and Carter, and the cinematography was outstanding. The mixture of history, literature, humor, and memorable characters were much better than many series on TV today. We've mentioned the show to quite a few people, who never saw it, which perhaps explains why it was canceled. I remember that it was on at different times, probably syndicated, which made it hard to find. I particularly remember recommending it because it was good family fare. We were very disappointed when it was canceled. We'll keep looking for it as a DVD release.

I really enjoyed it I'm on episode 11 I watched it for three nights in a row to get to that episode 11 and that's how much it interested me I'm certainly sure I'll watch the rest of it and I'm sad that it's come to an end unfortunately.

A decent,quite fun show
akhilles8418 August 2001
I had the pleasure of watching this show about five years ago.I remember it starred one of my favorite Native American actors,Rodney A. Grant. He was very good here, although not always privileged by the writers.Lee Horsley was totally unfamiliar to me before this and i was quite satisfied by his work.Stories were good and exciting and the actors didnt fail in their task,i.e. recreating the old time people and all their good and bad sides.Same can be said about the creators of the show. They managed to create a good 18th century America and nice tales.

Great series for appreciating American history and good TV
bobshankjr-21 January 2014
My wife purchased this series on DVD recently for our bed-time 'belly-telly' viewing. We've enjoyed it immensely - only to discover there was only 1 season's worth. What a great disappointment. It was one of the best-done series ever. Great cast, good stories, well told! Lee Horsley and Lynda Carter had good chemistry - as well as the rest of the acting crew. Rodney Grant as Chingachgook was a delightful surprise, as well as Garwin Sanford (stiff upper-lip Capt. Taylor Shields). Maybe the viewing-time was off-center, or the timing of such a series was competing against, yet another, TV falderal. Still, it was a really wonderful series. Sandie and I would give a load of beaver skins to see that series revived! ~Bob & Sandie Shank, Tucson AZ

Great show, I wish it would have been continued
fht45180019 May 2010
This show had very good historical content and was excellently written and performed by a great cast, Lee Horsley and the lovely Linda Carter with a wonderful supporting cast of characters. It showed good family and American values and I really enjoyed watching it. It reflected the integrity, moral values, and self respect our forefathers held and I was sad when it was not continued. It only ran one season, but, the characters were well developed by the end of that season and it was a show that could be enjoyed by everyone. The show was great as it was and I would love to see the show come out on DVD for I would surely LOVE to watch it again.

Not the book you read in HS, but who cares?
mrwoof-367-88594024 February 2022
I found this series quite intriguing. To be honest, I watched for the first time because, well, I like looking at Lynda Carter (so, sue me). Turned out to be surprisingly appealing. (I've never read the book, nor seen the Daniel Day-Lewis movie.) Some of what I found interesting...

One: How many TV series are set during the Seven Years War (aka the French & Indian War)? I can't think of any. Daniel Boone and Davy Crockett were both set 20-30 years later.

Two: An attempt was clearly made to not portray Natives in that stereotypical manner so common previously. Not always successfully, perhaps, but the Indians were referred to by their own national names, Delaware, Huron, etc. The clearly racist British tended to call them "savages", but that's in keeping, historically. Chingachgook was portrayed by actual Omaha Rodney A. Grant, and most of the Delaware and Huron characters appear to have been played by actual Native Americans. (Hey, baby steps.) Three: It was portrayed a little too prettily, especially Lee Horsley, who was just way too pretty, particularly his hair. But, y'know, TV.

Four: I can't quite nail down where this was set. I could find no reference to a "Ft. Bennington" from that period. There is, of course, Ft. Benning, but that's in Georgia (and much later). There was a "Bennington campaign" as part of the Revolution, but, again, that was 20+ years later. From references to Saratoga and Albany, I'm surmising that it's the upper Hudson Valley, where, to the surprise of many downstaters like myself, the Hudson is very fordable. Maybe somewhat to the West and South of the Lake George area, but East of the Adirondacks.

Five: I find myself somewhat baffled by the characters of Peevey and McKinney. The characters appear to behave like adolescents, but the actors were in their mid-20s at the time. If the characters were that old, why aren't they in the militia, or conscripted by Capt. Shields? If they're actually teenagers, where are their parents? If orphans, where do they live? Where were they six or seven years earlier, when they would have been in single digits? Enquiring minds want to know.

Six: I wish the image quality were better. The focus seems a bit soft. No one would have noticed pre-HD, but... Seven: Hawkeye is presented as sort of a "white savior", protector of Natives and colonists alike. Again, 1994 TV. Some slack may be justified.

Eight: Many of the episodes deal with modern philosophical issues, particularly regarding ethics, war, and racism.

There was only one season (22 episodes). I suspect that it didn't succeed because it was a little too philosophical; this was the era, recall, of Hercules and Xena. There's not nearly as much action (read: blood) in Hawkeye. I also feel Chingachgook was under-utilized.

One odd thing, I've noticed a number of actors whom I recognized from SG-1, which was 5-6 years later. Indeed, Gavin Sanford (Capt. Shields) was a semi-regular (he played a Tok'ra). Not difficult to imagine, but notable nonetheless.

As of this writing, it's available on Tubi and CoziTV. A couple of episodes each weekend might be a comfortable frequency.

Never knew of the show or of Lee Horsley
JasCol-0812410 July 2022
Discovered them both this year, 2022, on my local retro tv channel.

Wonderful show. As others have said, I wish the series ran longer. According to my wife, Lee Horsley was quite well known in the 1980's. Not to me, but now that I know of him I will keep an eye out for his other retro shows.

Linda Carter is beautiful as always and also very well cast. Rodney Grant is exceptional as he was in Dances with Wolves. Watch the series from start to finish, you won't be disappointed. Well written, interesting time period and characters who will win you over.

FABULOUS
magical-kingdom22 September 2021
FABULOUS Hawkeye is a beautiful story that takes place in the year 1755 in Hudson Valley, New York during the time of the British & French war. The scenery is magnificent with an outstanding cast. Lee Horsley an excellent actor who presents a superior rendition of Hawkeye. A breathtakingly handsome hero with upstanding morals and great horseman.

Rodney Grant (Chingachgook) his best friend, chief of Delaware Indians. Beautiful! Lynda Carter (Elizabeth) Lots of action, adventure along with a sweet love story. Elizabeth's husband is kidnapped. Meanwhile, she takes it upon herself to run the fort and Hawkeye develops an interest in her. At times Hawkeye and Elizabeth appear to want to move forward in their relationship which is always on the up and up. Hawkeye honoring his decent moral character, always watching over her and Chingachgook and vice versa. You can't help but like his character. What a wonderful find. This was a beautifully told series and I thoroughly enjoyed every episode and wished there were more. In fact I'm re-watching and seriously thinking of purchasing the DVD's.

18th Century Women did show Cleavage
tcookmaynard2 January 2022
Just a good old fashioned style show that I just discovered. I'm very much enjoying something so 50s like, not the modern microwave TV of the 70s and beyond. The show is not a $100,000,000 movie production so don't go into expecting it as some have complained. And yes, Lynda wears 18th century dresses that show some breast; that's the way it was for those who don't know their history. Just enjoy a break from the hundreds of meaningless reality shows.

Really enjoyable
rwpoweris3 June 2022
I started watching the series because I enjoy period drama. I have found it interesting, but with at least one flaw...the military are saluting with the LEFT hand. As a retired soldier, I find this a poor job done by the researchers of this programme.

Not Last of the Mohicans
galahad58-128 February 2016
A decent show that has beautiful landscapes and historical value. The stories are average and watchable, but they are not great. You will not confuse this with Daniel Day Lewis' spectacular Last of the Mohicans, because Lee Horsley is so wooden and below average as Hawkeye and Lynda Carter (no matter how beautiful she is) is such a terrible actress that she brings the show down a few notches. A show with potential is the producers had cast better leads and focused more on Hawkeye and less on Carter's terrible character of Elizabeth.

Rodney Grant is a bright spot on the show and he is rarely in each episode.

What a Great TV Series!
JohnnyM53129 October 2022
I never watched this in it's original run. I'm watching it on getTV. How did so many of us miss this? I saw someone else say it was on Saturday afternoons when there wasn't a college football game. That's probably why.

Love the characters, the time period, the scenery and the acting. It only lasted one season, which was a disappointment. Lee Horsley, Lynda Carter, Rodney Grant, Garwin Sanford and even Lochlyn Munro, who's been in so many tings since, made the show.

I sè it's out on DVD according to some reviews. I will have to purchase in order to view it again. It's well worth a second viewing.

Great, with a hint of cheese
randlk14 February 2023
Just finished watching this fantastic series. I've loved it. The cast are superb, Lee Horsley is perfect as is Linda Carter and Rodney Grant. Each episode is enjoyable. My only slight gripe would be some of the dialogue, especially for the native Indians, is on the cheesy side. I was half expecting them to raise one hand up and say "How!..we um Indians...you um White man!" at some point. That aside, this is a pleasant and thoroughly enjoyable series and I'm so glad I bought it. I would love to see another series, obviously set 20 years on, to see how these wonderful characters got on. I for one would love to see Lee Horsley and Rodney Grant in action again.

Action/Adventure Epic
michael_sluka12 February 2024
I stumbled on this on FreeVee almost 30 years after its original airing. I guess I was too busy raising teenagers to notice it back then. The pre-Revolutionary War setting and history drew me in, but the action/adventure and intrigue kept me viewing all 22 episodes the last week or so. Each episode presents its own plots, with the principal characters growing/evolving within. As you can easily guess by the advertising jacket, Lee Horsely and Lynda Carter develop a romantic relationship, but put on a painfully slow-burn due to reasons within the story. Aside from the bloodshed necessitated by the French and Indian War surrounding the storyline, this is 'family values' viewing. A few episodes go into PG-13 level circumstances, but these are handled with carefully crafted morality lessons. It was a great watch...I am hoping I can unearth more gems like this.

An Anachronism
sugarmountainf3 June 2021
I liked that the producers tried to be authentic for the period, but Lynda's modern make up and cleavage display playing an 18th-century woman forced me to suppress giggling when she was in any scene.
