- After the murder of his father in the Yukon, Fraser, a RCMP constable, follows the killer's tracks all the way to Chicago where he meets Ray, a Chicago PD detective. Together they continue their search for the truth and justice.
- When a legendary Canadian Mountie is murdered, his son (and fellow RCMP) Constable Benton Fraser follows the trail of his killers to Chicago, where he teams up with a local cop to bring them to justice. However, he soon finds that the trail leads closer to home than he ever imagined.—Mark Cabot
- A lone figure (Gordon Pinsent) walks the icy, empty and mountainous landscape. Scraping away at the ice, he uncovers the eye of a caribou. He hears something. "You're going to shoot a Mountie? They'll hunt you to the end of the Earth!" A gunshot rings out and he collapses. Robert Fraser is dead.
The son, Benton Fraser (Paul Gross), decides to find out who killed him, despite his superiors' contention that it was a simple accident.
The trail leads him to Chicago, where Fraser gets the job of Acting Deputy Liaison Officer and goes to the police station to find the Detective Raymond Vecchio (David Marciano) who is reluctant to help. Fraser tells him that the Dead Mountie was his father and gets news that the caribou drowned.
Intrigued and guilty, Detective Vecchio helps him, despite declaring that 'this is going to do buttcuss for my career', and the trail leds them to Francis Drake (Page Fletcher) who leds them into a trap, seriously injurying Vecchio who pushed Fraser out the window to save him.
Fraser's superior and his father's friend, Gerard (Ken Pogue), comes to Chicago to fetch him home only to find Drake ambushing them. After a struggle with Fraser, who was about to arrest him, Gerard shoots Drake before the police arrive.
When Fraser returns home, Eric, a native, tells him how the caribou drowned on dry land. A recent project that has brought a lot of employment and money to the area, a dam, doesn't work properly, so the water's periodically allowed into the confined area, drowning the life that live there. His father knew what was happening.
Having found the motive, Fraser confronts Gerard with a gun, who also had to have known. Gerard confirms this and tells Fraser that he was paid to keep quiet.
But his father was too. As proof, Gerard shows him Robert's bank book. Robert had dedicated his life to the RCMP, even to the detrement of his relationship of his son, but he had ended up with only a meagre retirement. So he took the money.
But he had second thoughts and that was why Gerard hired Drake to him. "He was your friend!" Fraser shouted but Gerard told him that Robert was left with nothing, except his reputation. He left.
Eventually, Fraser decides that he couldn't leave it alone. He leaves one of the caribou on Gerard's desk.
Preparing for the big showdown, Fraser hears a knock on the door. On the other side is someone he didn't expect - Ray Vecchio, bandaged and dressed in a garish ski suit. He has news. He knows who did it!
Fraser tells him he knows too and Ray's very put out. But he has come bearing gifts - a small arsenal. Fraser goes out to feed the dogs and discovers that the bad guys have come.
Ray uses his arsenal to lay the same trap that Drake had laid out for them. Fraser hitches the dog sled and they take off, leading into a chase that takes down seven guys (one more and Fraser qualifies for American citizenship, says Ray).
Fraser hears a sound. A shot rings out and a form crumbles to the ground. Fraser looks over at where the shot originated. Eric appears and complains about the amount of hunting accidents in the area.
Gerard testifies against his fellow conspirators but Fraser is consigned to the only place that will take him - Chicago.
