It is hard to believe (for people of a certain age), but the year 1994 was 30 years ago! For this week’s poll, we wanted to step back into the time machine and reminisce about what could possibly be considered one of the best years in cinema history. If, like me, you are in your thirties, 1994 holds a nostalgic place due to movies such as Blank Check, D2: The Mighty Ducks, Major League 2, Clifford, The Flintstones, Getting Even With Dad, Little Big League, Angels in the Outfield, The Little Rascals, Camp Nowhere, Richie Rich and Little Giants. The year also represented the huge breakout of comedy legend Jim Carrey as Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, The Mask, and Dumb and Dumber were all released during that single calendar year.
But it wasn’t just movies aimed at a child’s heart that were released in 1994. The year also saw some genuine...

"The Conjuring 2" opens with Ed and Lorraine Warren investigating the infamous Amityville house at 112 Ocean Avenue to determine whether or not a demonic presence caused Ronald DeFeo Jr. to commit familial annihilation and the subsequent supernatural events that plagued the Lutz family after they moved into the home. The couple holds a seance and Lorraine is thrust into a terrifying vision where she encounters a demonic nun.
The Nun appears multiple times throughout the film, until Lorraine rightfully addresses it as Valak, a shape-shifting demon, and condemns it back from which it came. James Wan didn't intend for Valak to be such a major player in The Conjuring Universe — honestly, "The Conjuring" was never supposed to spawn a cinematic universe but the fans demanded it — and didn't originally intend for the demon to take the shape of a nun. When Basic Instinct hit big, Hollywood went hunting for more erotic thrillers. Er, it found some. Includes Kevin Spacey with odd hair.
When a movie hits big out of the blue, it’s unwritten Hollywood law that the imitators aren’t too far behind. That’s why, after American Pie brought Porky’s-esque sex-tinged (late) teen comedies back to prominence in 1999, the box office was flooded with similar fare for years after. The Blair Witch Project, meanwhile, hit out of nowhere, and found footage horror is only now dying away. The late Wes Craven, meanwhile, wryly noted just how quickly Hollywood had cashed in on the success of 1996’s Scream, when spoof Scary Movie popped out the year after.

Going back to 1992, though, and it was the turn of the erotic thriller to enjoy its resurgence.

On Tuesday July 19, Hollywood lost a giant in the world of comedy with the passing of beloved director/writer/producer/actor Gary Marshall at the age of 81. While most of the news outlets focused in on his considerable work in television (he practically owned Tuesday nights in the 1970’s with his “Happy Days” empire), this site would like to salute Mr. Marshall’s work on both sides of the camera.
After impressive writing credits on many of the classic sitcoms of the 1960’s, it was inevitable that the movie studios would tap him to contribute to several screenplays. The first was produced in 1968, a marriage comedy starring James Garner and Debbie Reynolds, How Sweet It Is. A youth-oriented romantic comedy starring Jacqueline Bisset, The Grasshopper, was released in 1970. TV triumphs quickly followed, so Marshall’s movie career was put on hold for more than a dozen years. 1982 was the year...

His impact on Hollywood cannot be overstated and sadly Garry Marshall died of complications from pneumonia on Tuesday (July 19).
The 81-year-old actor/director/writer/producer was best known for creating “Happy Days” and developing “The Odd Couple” for television as well as directing “Young Doctors in Love,” “Pretty Woman,” “Exit to Eden,” “Runaway Bride,” “The Princess Diaries” and most recently “Mother’s Day.”
Back in 2014, Wgaw President Christopher Keyser sang Marshall’s praises as he presented him with the Wgaw Television Laurel Award- “Garry Marshall’s filmography – from ‘The Joey Bishop Show’ to ‘Happy Days’ – is a virtual history of American television comedy. Both of-their-time and timeless, his shows are a gentle, generous, comic mirror held up to late mid-century America. One of Hollywood's key figures passed away yesterday at the age of 81. His work in the past five years has consisted of a string of critically lambasted all star romcoms (Valentines Day, New Year's Eve, Mothers Day) and the day before he died one of the many actor he made famous (Scott Baio of Happy Days & Joanie Loves Chachi fame) embarrassed himself on national television at the Rnc. To put it bluntly, the last few years have not been kind but this is not the legacy that the beloved Garry Marshall deserves. We need to look a little further back. While he was never exactly a critic's darling - let's not rewrite history -- his work often resonated wildly with the public on screens both small and large. And that, my friends, is no small thing with or without a shelf of showbiz trophies.

Chicago – Strike one of far too many: “Fifty Shades of Grey” author Erika Leonard (better known as E.L. James) has never lived the Bdsm lifestyle. And therefore, nor should she be writing about, romanticizing and profiteering on it. On a $40 million budget, the film earned $30.2 million on its opening Friday and is on track for a record-breaking international weekend grab of $158 million.

Ja from Mnpp here - you've probably heard by now that David Fincher is being lured towards making a movie about Apple co-founder Steve Jobs via a script by Aaron Sorkin; the big news yesterday was that Fincher told Sony that the only way he would make their silly little computer movie is if he could have the actor Christian Bale handed to him on a platter to play the leading role.
They say the film "consists of three long scenes regarding Apple's buzzed-about product launches" - sounds like a jazzy spot for a serious thespian to play around in (DiCaprio certainly relished those sequences in The Wolf of Wall Street) and Bale's nothing if not serious.
Indeed hearing their names together just now I wonder why they have never worked together before - Fincher's hundred-take slogs seem like just the sort of punishment Bale's inclined towards. They'll make...

Back in 1989, Blake Lively's half-sister Robyn Lively starred in "Teen Witch," a movie that has one of the best (and most awkward) rap scenes ever. The movie went on to become a bit of a cult classic, thanks in large part to Mandy Ingber's incredibly embarrassing/awesome delivery of the song "Top That."And now, 24 years later, she's re-dong it for Glamour magazine.Check out the hilarious video above. For those of you who haven't seen the movie, Ingner's Polly tries to impress her too-cool-for-school crush by challenging him to a rap battle. Here's the original below:Ingber went on to add "The Relic" and "Exit to Eden" to her acting resume before becoming a celebrity yoga instructor, with clients like Jennifer Aniston. Read more...

It's hard to believe that 25 years have passed since the debut of China Beach, in which Emmy winner Dana Delany made a huge impact on the small screen as Army nurse Colleen McMurphy, a complicated character experiencing the physical and emotional horrors of the Vietnam War firsthand and elbow deep. With the complete series now available in a DVD box set just in time for its silver anniversary, Dana takes a stroll down memory lane with ETonline to talk about the show's impact, how the defining role that initially daunted her eventually changed her life -- and how she almost lost the part to Helen Hunt.
Pics: Star Sightings
"The part was originally written [as a] Midwestern girl and she had blonde hair – I think 'the color of wheat' was the description of it, because she was from Kansas -- and I didn’t look like that," says Dana. "I certainly looked wholesome, and I think...

This week's Huddle is inspired by Flavorwire's list of Film's Most Awkward Couples, including Rosie O'Donnell and Dan Aykroyd in Exit to Eden. While we can agree with that weirdness as well as most of the others on their list, there are plenty of awkward pairings we can come up with, too — including some lesbian twosomes.
Dana Picolli: Papi and Kit from The L Word. What in the hell were they thinking with this one? I remember screaming "Nooooooo!" at my screen during their awkward hook up. Kit was so kick ass, and the whole thing felt so forced. She deserved better than that. Shortly after that, Papi walked off into the West Hollywood sunset, never to be seen or heard from again.
Heather Hogan: Tobias and Lindsay Funke! They're the most ridiculous/hilarious awkward couple in history!

Want to make a Gen Xer feel old? Tell 'em that 20 years ago today, on February 14, 1992, "Wayne's World" was released in theaters. ("'Wayne's World' is 20? No way?!" "Way!") Lots of now middle-aged folks who spent too long living in their parents' basements (like Wayne and Garth) have fond memories of what may be the funniest film ever spawned from a "Saturday Night Live" sketch, a film that made a bankable movie comedy star out of Mike Myers, introduced the world to Tia Carrere, helped rescue Rob Lowe's career, and spawned countless catchphrases that viewers couldn't stop repeating. ("Schwing!" "We're not worthy!" "That's what she said!") Yet behind the movie's blissful silliness lies a secret story of off-camera bitterness and strife that threatened to keep the film from partying on -- as you'll read below. 1. Myers created the Wayne Campbell character long before "SNL," when he was still in high school.

Last week, opinion website Sodahead asked the question, is Rosie O'Donnell the worst talk-show host ever?, allowing readers to vote for either the new Oprah Winfrey Network host or six others. The results are now in, and in a landslide consensus, 61% of voters agree that, yes, the woman who mentally scarred many for life with her leather dominatrix gear in Exit to Eden is indeed the worst talk-show host of all time. Following Rosie in the voting was her former View co-host Star Jones (who O'Donnell had once accused of having gastric bypass surgery), Jerry Springer (who recently said criticism of his show was "class warfare," but what do you expect with one-legged transvestite catfights? But hey, who else can say they have an opera named after them?), Wendy Williams (not the equipment-destroying, Mohawk'd punker), cornpone Oprah discovery Dr. Phil, Pat Sajak (who obviously [...]...

It never occurred to me that you could make feature length film about all the bad jokes and perverted thoughts you had in high school and yet still have it turn into an enjoyable experience for someone other than your dysfunctional self to watch. The Taint is a constant reminder of our stupidity. Its obsession with all things genital-related is as embarrassing as discovering your pecker for the first to time while watching the S&M comedy Exit to Eden. With all its dicks, jizz, and gay jokes, The Taint comes across as a psychotic, moronic teenage dream, induced from an overdose of video game playing, porn watching and murderous fantasies. Some might call it a nightmare; but I call it a funtime bonanza,...

He might have some crappy movies on his resume, like the shockingly bad 'Exit to Eden,' but due to flicks like 'Pretty Woman,' Garry Marshall can always pull in the big names. 'Valentine's Day' ran the gamut of talent earlier this year, from Shirley MacLaine and Kathy Bates to Taylor Swift and Emma Roberts, from Hector Elizondo and George Lopez to Ashton Kutcher and Taylor Lautner.
And now that the cliche parade has made over $100 million domestically and another $100 million internationally, it's time for the next holiday ensemble piece, Marshall's 'New Year's Eve.'
As production gears up to begin any day now, the cast is coming together with some of the 'Valentine's' actors picking up new roles and more big names circling the romantic comedy.

Chicago – One of the recent stellar events in Chicago was the More Magazine “Reinvention Convention,” a gathering of the magazine’s readers to meet and hear speakers. The featured speaker was actor Dana Delany [“Desperate Housewives”]. Signing her book at the event was Olympic Swimmer Dara Torres.
Delany is best known for her role as Nurse Colleen McMurphy on the memorable late 1980s TV show, “China Beach, but recently she’s on Wisteria Lane as Katherine Mayfair in “Desperate Housewives.” It was just announced that Delany will be promoted to Doctor, as in Dr. Megan Hunt, on the new ABC series this Fall, “Body of Proof.”
Dara Torres is the first Olympic swimmer to have competed in an astounding five Olympic Games: 1984, 1988. 1992, 2000 and 2008, winning a total of 12 medals. She was at the Reinvention Convention signing her new book, “Gold Medal Fitness.”

Garry Marshall’s star-studded new romantic comedy Valentine’s Day explores love in all its myriad forms, from the sickeningly sappy to the cornball to the groaningly precious and obnoxiously cute. The veteran filmmaker and television guru previously transformed subject matter like S&M pleasure islands (Exit To Eden) and prostitution (Pretty Woman) into goofy, crowd-pleasing pabulum. So when Marshall is given a big Sweetest Day Hallmark card of a screenplay like Katherine Fugate’s overstuffed aggregation of saccharine rom-com clichés, there’s no chance audiences will leave the film with their heartstrings unplucked. Ashton Kutcher leads a sprawling ...

At the top of Wednesday night's Dallas-themed "American Idol" audition episode, guest judge Neil Patrick Harris told Kara DioGuardi that his goal was simple. "If I can make two, three dozen people cry, I feel like I've done my job."
Mission accomplished!
There were lots of tears in Dallas, all mercifully packaged into one quick "bad singers rejected" montage. In fact, out of the ten extended auditions shown Wednesday night, a whopping seven of them featured contestants who advanced to the next round. (Is that a record?) Perhaps that's why this episode was an especially enjoyable one! (Or maybe the joy came from knowing that the end is in sight for these frustrating audition episodes. Yep, I think that might be it.)
As Katy Perry proved on Tuesday night, a guest judge's performance can easily become the real reason to tune in. Neil Patrick Harris was quick-witted and charming. (He...

Take cover: Here's the trailer for the most achingly inauthentic movie of the first part of 2010. valentine's Day, as I believe I've mentioned here before, seems for all the world to have been developed in a board room. No offense to writers Kathrine Fugate and Abby Cohn, who also penned He's Just Not That Into you...hmm, on second thought, I do mean offense to them: This looks like garbage.
The story is simple. New Line wants to cash in on Valentine's Day, the way it did with Not That Into You this year. So how do you do that? Oh, I know - you make a movie called Valentine's Day and people it with both Jessicas, Julia Roberts, two guys from Grey's Anatomy, Jennifer Garner, Bradley Cooper from your most recent rom-com triumph, and Anne Hathaway, and throw in Garry Marshall, who will only be known as "the director...

When you think "Dan Aykroyd" what springs to mind? Ghostbusters? Obviously. Blues Brothers? Of course. His knockout performance as Britney Spears' father in Crossroads? Probably not. Psi Factor: Chronicles Of The Paranormal? If so, you're probably Canadian. Rosie O'Donnell dressed as a dominatrix? Somebody saw Exit To Eden. But after enduring the following 8-minute infomercial, your perception of Dan Aykroyd will be forever altered. No longer will he be ghostbuster, or blues brother, or Britney's dad, or paranormal-themed anthology show host, or undercover cop at a sex resort with Rosie O'Donnell. After you click play and absorb this infomercial, when you think "Dan Aykroyd" only one image will come to mind: A crystal skull filled with vodka. (via Bwe) Wow. If there was an award for Hardest Vodka Sell (Novelty Bottle Category), Dan Aykroyd would definitely win. I didn't know that...
