A new trailer has been released for the upcoming drama Greetings From Tim Buckley, which is based on the rise of musical artist Jeff Buckley. Buckley was a very talented musician whose life was cut short when he died unexpectedly at the age of 30 in 1997. The movie was directed by Dan Algrant (People I Know, Naked in New York), and it stars Penn Badgely (Gossip Girl) as Jeff; Imogen Poots as Buckley's love interest, Allie; and Ben Rosenfield as Jeff's dad, Tim. The movie looks fantastic and everyone looks like they do a terrific job. I'm a fan of Buckley's music, and I'm looking forward to seeing this. Here's the synopsis for the film...
In 1991, a young Jeff Buckley rehearses for his public singing debut at a Brooklyn tribute show for his father, the late folk singer Tim Buckley. Struggling with the legacy of a man he barely knew, Jeff...

There seems to be countless movie Snow Whites in the works (Kristen Stewart's, Lily Collins', China's, etc.). But there are only two movie projects about singer Jeff Buckley, who drowned at the age of 30 while swimming in Tennessee's Wolf River in 1997. One, Greetings from Tim Buckley, is set to star Gossip Girl's Penn Badgley as Jeff Buckley. The other, it has been announced, will star Broadway actor-singer Reeve Carney as Buckley. Carney, who played Prince Ferdinand in Helen Mirren's The Tempest and the young Ethan Hawke in Snow Falling on Cedars, is best known for his Broadway incarnation of Spider-Man in Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark. To be directed by Jake Scott, son of Ridley Scott and best known for the Kristen Stewart-James Gandolfini drama Welcome to the Rileys, this as-yet untitled Jeff Buckley project is being executive produced by Buckley's mother, Mary Guibert.

The film was written by Dan Algrant, Emma Sheanshang and David Brendel, and Dan Algrant (Naked in New York) is directing. The film follows the true story of the days leading up to Jeff Buckley’s 1991 performance at a tribute concert for his father, who’d abandoned him. Poots plays a young woman who meets Jeff Buckley while working at the concert. They embark on a four-day journey that changes both their lives. Shooting begins next month. The rumors are true. Penn Badgley has won the role of Jeff Buckley in a biopic about the singer's life.
The "Gossip Girl" star will play the beloved singer/songwriter in "Greetings From Tim Buckley," which is set to begin filming in New York City later this summer. The film will tell the story of the young singer as he prepares to play at Brooklyn's St. Ann's Church in 1991 during a tribute concert to his father, fellow musician Tim Buckley.
"To play a man who was singularly gifted as an artist, greatly misunderstood and mythologized as a human being ... It's something very special and sacred," Badgley said in a statement about nabbing the part.

[1] Gossip Girl actor Penn Badgley has been tapped to star as Jeff Buckley in a new biopic about the singer-songwriter. No, not that one [2] -- the other one. In true Hollywood fashion, there are currently two Buckley-based projects in the works: the one Jake Scott's making with Buckley's mother Mary Guibert as executive producer, and this one, directed by Daniel Algrant (Naked in New York). Scott's film will be look at Buckley's (tragically brief) life and career arc, whereas Algrant's will focus on Buckley's breakthrough performance at a 1991 tribute concert for his father, the late Tim Buckley. According to The Playlist [3], Algrant's will also include a romance between Buckley and a working at the concert. I really only know Badgley from Easy A and the handful of Gossip Girl episodes I've seen, and I can't say he's ever left a strong impression on me. (Well -- I hated his Gossip Girl character,...

We reported in early April that none other than Ridley Scott's son Jake had signed on to direct a biopic about the tragically deceased singer-songwriter who moved a generation of teens with his emotive voice and left only one album of much-loved songs in his wake. And while there was much talk about who should be selected to play the handsome, brooding musician - Joseph Gordon-Levitt, James Franco, Pattinson? - another Jeff Buckley film was being pulled together right under our noses and has chosen a slightly different angle with their lead actor ready to go.
Greetings from Tim Buckley will star "Gossip Girl" alum Penn Badgley and follows the young man as he confronts his musician father's tragic passing, leading up to his 1991 performance of his dad's songs during a tribute concert. The film, titled Greetings From Tim Buckley, is one of two films being made about the singer, this one though follows the days leading up to Buckley's performance at his father's tribute gig in St. Ann's Church. Over the weekend talk emerged that "Gossip Girl" and "The Stepfather" actor Penn Badgley had beaten out the likes of Robert Pattinson to play Jeff Buckley in the upcoming biopic about the late singer.
Badgley's reps quickly shot down the story, telling The Los Angeles Times that "Penn is not involved in the film at all".
Now the confusion has been cleared up - there are two Jeff Buckley movies in the works, only one of which involves Badgley. The first is being produced by Orian Williams and has the blessing of the Jeff Buckley estate.
Smuggler Films however is developing their own film, which has rights to music from the estate of Jeff's father Tim Buckley. That project has now issued a press release today confirming Badgley will star as Jeff Buckley in the project which is entitled "Greetings from Tim Buckley".

Finally, a film about the late Jeff Buckley is set and ready for production. But will fans say "Hallelujah" at the top casting choice?
Smuggler Films announced late Monday that "Gossip Girl" star Penn Badgley has won the right to play the late rocker in the upcoming film, "Greetings From Tim Buckley." The movie will follow the journey Jeff Buckley took in grappling with the legacy of his late musician father, Tim, leading up to and culminating with his legendary 1991 performance of his father's songs.
Buckley, whose one proper album, "Grace," stunned audiences and made him a cult sensation, drowned in 1997 while swimming in the Wolf River of Tennessee.
Speculation had been rife over who would win the part; based on looks, some thought it might go to James Franco, while Robert Pattinson offered the brooding musician prototype that fit Buckley's public profile.
Instead, it goes to Badgley, a 24-year old who,...

Don't call it a biopic.
Penn Badgley is set to star as singer-songwriter Jeff Buckley in the father-son drama "Greetings From Tim Buckley." Indiewire reports. The film centers on the days leading up to Jeff Buckley's 1991 performance at his father's tribute concert in St. Ann's Church.
Badgley, best known for his role as Dan Humphrey on The CW's "Gossip Girl," says, "To play a man who was singularly gifted as an artist, greatly misunderstood and mythologized as a human being... It's something very special and sacred. I'm going to give all I can to this project."
"We had been searching well over a year for an actor that can come close to Jeff's spirit while also having the serious musical chops required to authentically tell this story," the film's producer Patrick Milling Smith says. "Penn's audition blew us away and we knew we found our star."

Penn Badgely has been cast as Jeff Buckley in a upcoming biopic based on the musical artist called Geetings From Tim Buckley. Buckley was a very talented musician and was a rising star, but he died at the age of 30 in 1997.
