Jaws, The Shawshank Redemption, Blade Runner, Goodfellas and more are getting 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Steelbooks in the UK.
The Film Vault range of physical media releases has previously seen much-loved films presented in deluxe packaging, with assorted extra materials in the box. They’re on the pricey side, but there’s no denying the love that’s gone into putting them together.
Now, a slightly more economic range of reissues for the seven films in the range so far is incoming, which sees the same movies now arriving in fresh Steelbook packaging. The distinctive artwork from the earlier releases is included, and there’s brand new art on the reverse of each as well. The artwork has been designed by Matt Ferguson and Florey of Vice Press.

Ron Howard's 1995 film "Apollo 13" is an effective thriller even when forearmed with the knowledge that the three astronauts depicted returned to Earth okay. For those unfamiliar with the Apollo 13 mission, in April of 1970, Jim Lovell, Jack Swigert, and Fred Haise took a shuttle into space, hoping to land on the moon. An electrical problem, however, caused an explosion on the craft, and the astronauts lost a great deal of their oxygen supply. With resources nil and communication limited, the astronauts had to find a way to survive in space and return to Earth alive. Sadly, they didn't get to walk on the moon.
In Howard's film, the astronauts were played by Tom Hanks, Kevin Bacon, and Bill Paxton, while Ed Harris played their contact back at NASA. The film was nominated for nine Academy Awards, including Best Picture, and won two for Best Sound and Best Editing. It...

Against all odds, a new adaptation of the acclaimed sci-fi novel "The Three-Body Problem" is finally here and it truly lives up to its billing as the nerdiest series of the year. Readers know full well just how deep in the weeds the original story can get, as author Liu Cixin oftentimes spends entire passages breaking down the finer points of astrophysics, quantum mechanics, and other heady Stem topics that definitely aren't for the faint of heart. It's to the writer's credit that even the driest of subject matter still provides a foundation for one of the most entertaining epics in all of fiction, made up of a full trilogy of books collectively titled "Remembrance of Earth's Past," thanks in no small part to his commitment to getting the science right wherever possible. Earlier this week, we all experienced the first day of spring 2024. We're now fully in the season of rejuvenation, of tossing out the old and bringing in the new, and literally nothing -- not the most intense spring cleaning session, or even the most spectacular miracles of nature itself -- better represents that than the churn of films and TV shows leaving the Netflix streaming service as its rotating library is partially shaken out and replenished with a fresh round of titles.
We know what movies and shows are arriving in April, but what about the projects that are getting the boot and being scattered into the digital ether, potentially disappearing for a while or perhaps popping up on some other streaming service altogether? Thankfully, we have that information at our fingertips as well. And with just a few days left in the month, consider this a ticking clock reminder...

As the social and political turmoil of 1960s America spilled into the 1970s, network television executives and producers knew they could no longer ignore the thorny issues being argued over kitchen tables and at work/school. The Vietnam War, the Civil Rights Movement, the Equal Rights Amendment, etc. were driving a wedge between families and neighbors. So when Norman Lear trotted out the unrepentant bigot Archie Bunker on "All in the Family" in 1971, many people in the country felt seen. And while they might not agree on the hot-button topics explored on this show, they could at least laugh through their many disagreements.
There came a point, however (somewhere between President Richard M. Nixon's resignation and the end of the Vietnam War), where television viewers grew weary of all these socially conscious sitcoms. Yes, they were still watching them in huge numbers, but they needed a break from the nonstop tumult of their lives.

Bryce Dallas Howard is an established actress in Hollywood, but she made her debut when she was well into her 20s. It was quite late by industry standards, especially since she was the daughter of the renowned director, Ron Howard. The Jurassic World actress had a chance to step into the world of acting when she was only a child but did not.
As it turns out, her two-time Academy Award-winning father simply prevented her and her siblings from venturing into the world at such a young age. Her father has always been watching out for her, even if his decision raised more than a few eyebrows at the time.

To accurately simulate the zero-gravity environment in space — at least in the days before today’s advanced CGI — the stars of Apollo 13 spent plenty of time filming aboard an airplane that repeatedly flew zero-g maneuvers. Footloose (1984) was the film that put Bacon into the limelight. Throughout the 96-year history of the Academy Awards, the amount of acting lineups consisting only of first-time nominees has reached 37, or about 10% of the overall total. While that number may not seem high in a general sense, these cases actually outnumber those exclusively involving veteran contenders by a ratio of three to one. However, although this list expanded as recently as 2023, rookie-only acting lineups are gradually becoming less common than veteran-only ones, the amount of which has nearly doubled within the last dozen years.
Whereas 75% of veteran-only acting quintets have involved lead performers rather than supporting ones, almost the exact opposite is true of lineups full of newcomers. For instance, only one existing case of the former kind concerns supporting actresses, whereas the same category has produced 15 rookie-only rosters. The last such group consisted of 2000 winner Angelina Jolie and nominees Toni Collette (“The Sixth Sense”), Catherine Keener (“Being John Malkovich...

Mickey Gilbert, the fearless stunt performer who jumped off a cliff for Robert Redford in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and doubled for Gene Wilder in films including Blazing Saddles, Silver Streak and The Frisco Kid, has died. He was 87.
Gilbert died Monday of natural causes at his home in Camarillo, California, his oldest son, Tim Gilbert, also a stunt performer, told The Hollywood Reporter.

The original 1977 "Star Wars" is a miracle of a film. George Lucas' blockbuster could have gone wrong at any moment for a variety of reasons, yet it not only got made and released but became a monumental success (spawning one of the biggest movie franchises ever). Part of why the film and its first two sequels remain so impressive all these decades later is their simple story, vast worldbuilding, groundbreaking special effects, and impeccable casting of mostly little-known actors who would go on to become huge after the films hit theaters.
That sentiment extends to the greater franchise, which has launched several careers and given small roles to actors who would eventually break out in a big way. That's not to say the original "Star Wars" didn't feature any famous actors at the time, of course, be it Alec Guinness and Peter Cushing in the original trilogy, or Samuel L Jackson,...

Red Hot Chili Peppers frontman Anthony Kiedis’ stories of drug addiction and unusual relationships are making their way to the silver screen. Universal Pictures has optioned the singer’s 2004 memoir, Scar Tissue, to develop it into a biopic, according to Deadline. Anyone who's ever watched "Apollo 13" knows that space travel is arguably the most dangerous thing humanity has ever attempted. That's not a shocker given that the entire expanse of space might as well be specifically designed to ruin our day, from radiation to lack of air to extreme temperatures -- and that's not even counting more cinematic threats like asteroids and extraterrestrials. But when it's all said and done, usually it's the unsexy dangers that will get you in the end. Such as, say, profound loneliness and the helpless feeling of a marriage on the rocks.
That's the central idea behind "Spaceman," the latest Adam Sandler movie, depicting the star as a wayward astronaut in the midst of a lengthy solo journey amid the harsh, unforgiving vacuum of space. But as movies like "Solaris" and "Moon" and "Gravity" have depicted before, sometimes it's the worries and fears closest to...

Back in 1996, the Twister cast, outside of Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton was largely unknown. At the time, not too many of them were famous. However, in the years since the film, much of that has changed and much of the Twister cast has gone on to fame both in front and behind the camera.
Helen Hunt was arguably the film’s biggest star in the cast back in ’96, but she wasn’t the first choice for the movie. Before the role of Dr. Jo Harding went to her, Jurassic Park standout Laura Dern, Bridget Fonda, and Kate Mulgrew almost wore the good doctor’s white tank top and reinforced mud-stompers. Initially, Tom Hanks eyed the role of Bill Harding but ultimately felt Twister wasn’t the right fit for his brand of character creation. Other actors floated for Bill Harding include Kevin Costner, Michael Keaton, Kurt Russell, Richard Gere,...

The Library of Congress announced the 25 features joining the National Film Registry for 2023, with titles including “12 Years a Slave,” “Home Alone,” “The Nightmare Before Christmas” and “Terminator 2: Judgment Day.” Selected films must be more than 10 years old and are selected each year for their cultural, historic or aesthetic significance to preserve the film heritage of the U.S.
The Library of Congress is not responsible for the physical preservation of the titles selected — many have already been preserved by copyright holders, filmmakers or other archives. For those that haven’t yet been preserved, the Library’s National Audio-Visual Conservation Center works to make sure it will be — through ventures with other archives or studios or through its own preservation program.

In Ed Harris‘s over-40-year career he has surprisingly never won an Oscar or an Emmy, despite four nominations from the motion picture academy and two from the TV academy. Let’s take a look back at some of his best big-screen performances. Tour through our photo gallery above of Harris’s 15 greatest films, ranked from worst to best.
Harris received his first Oscar nomination in 1995 after almost two decades in front of the camera: Best Supporting Actor for “Apollo 13.” He subsequently competed for “The Truman Show” (Best Supporting Actor in 1998), “Pollock” (Best Actor in 2000), and “The Hours” (Best Supporting Actor in 2002). Kevin Bacon’s star-making role in 1984’s “Footloose” put him on a path that clashed with his original aspirations as a performer, the actor recently said on the “Podcrushed” podcast (via Insider). Bacon had no idea he was auditioning for a “dance movie” when he tested for the role of Ren McCormack.
“When I did the dance movie, I was not a dancer. I wasn’t trained as a dancer,” Bacon said. “If I’m being honest, I didn’t even really understand that it was a dance movie. I thought it was just a movie, and then, where they would indicate that there was dancing, I would just get up.”
Bacon continued, “They said something about a choreographer and I said, ‘You don’t really need a choreographer. I’ll just get up and dance. It’s not a big deal. Just play the record for me and I’ll jump around.

While I truly appreciate a compelling Korean ‘melo,‘ there are times when the drama becomes overwhelming, hijacking the plot’s integrity. My anticipation for The Moon was sky-high, and with its stellar cast, including popular actors, and my high expectations from the Hallyu industry, I entered with excitement. The realms of space and the future have been thoroughly explored in Korean media, with works like Space Sweepers and The Silent Sea finding success. Personally, I encountered similar concerns with ‘Space Sweeper,’ starring Song Jong-Ki, as I did with The Moon. Both films are excessively lengthy and strain for an emotional impact that ultimately falls short. I understand that this is a cultural denominator, similar to what we have with Indian films, but the criticism still stands when the film becomes tedious and feels overstretched.
The Moon details a space expedition to the moon conducted by Korea’s very own Naro Space Center.
